HUNTER, John.
FIRST EDITION. John Hunter, one of the greatest surgeons of all time, collected the material for this "epoch-making book" (G&M) while serving with the army at Belle Isle during the Seven Years' War. Published posthumously, it is easily the largest work by a British surgeon to date. His studies on inflammation in particular are fundamental for pathology, as there was little understanding of the subject before his time. He classified inflammation into three types, and was the first to assess and describe three essential factors of wound pathology: first, that an external agent in the air, and not the air itself, is a factor in wound inflammation; second, that a good blood supply is essential in maintaining the natural defences of the body; and third, that the presence of mortified tissue in a deep wound prevents healing and promotes the onset of sepsis. He was outstanding in importance to orthopaedic surgery among eighteenth century surgeons, and made epoch-making studies of the surgical diseases of the vascular system. He was acknowledged by Virchow as the founder of experimental and surgical pathology, and his collection of pathological specimens was at one time the finest in the world. G&M 2283. Grolier One Hundred (Medicine), 52. Lilly, Classical Works, 112. Willius & Keys, Cardiac Classics, pp. 263-275, reproducing Hunter's description of his own fatal illness, angina pectoris. Bick, Classics of Orthopaedics, 4. Long, History of Pathology, pp. 148-153. LeFanu, John Hunter, A List, p. 15.

The variety of the dishes ranges from the rather mundane and every-day such as 'Green Peas Soup' (p.27) and 'Eggs poached' (p.289), to the more exotic and outlandish such as 'To dress a Turtle the West-India way' (p.52) and a technique 'To lift a Swan' (p.479). An important Act passed by the Third Congress, authorizing the construction of the lighthouse at Cape Hatteras, one of the most prominent navigation landmarks on the East Coast. Though this act was passed in 1794, construction did not actually begin until 1799, and the lighthouse was not put into use until 1803. "The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects on fo the most hazardous sections of the Atlantic Coast. Offshore of Cape Hatteras, the Gulf Stream collides with the Virginia Drift, a branch of the Labrador Current from Canada. This current forces southbound ships into a dangerous twelve-mile long sandbar called Diamond Shoals. Hundreds and possibly thousands of shipwrecks in this area have it the reputation as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic" -- National Park Service. "Approved - May the thirteenth 1794." and signed in print by Speaker of the House Frederick Augustus Muhlenburg, Vice President John Adams, and President George Washington. Variant states of other acts of the Third Congress are known, and this issue is that which also has the printed lines, "Deposited among the Rolls in the Office of the Secretary of State," and signed in manuscript by the second Secretary of State, Edmund Randolph. Not Ex-Lib. The second American edition of Jefferson's famous work. This is the only book-length work by Jefferson to be published in his lifetime, and has been called "one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks." It was largely written in 1781 and first published in Paris, in French, in 1785, then published in English in London in 1787. Written in the form of answers to questions about Virginia, the book supplies a description of the geography, with an abundance of supporting material and unusual information. As J.M. Edelstein notes: "Jefferson wrote about things which interested him deeply and about which he knew a great deal; the NOTES, therefore, throws a fascinating light on his tastes, curiosities, and political and social opinions." The map which accompanies this edition was executed by Samuel Lewis and depicts Virginia in considerable detail. The story of the creation of this book and its publishing history is an interesting one. "Montesquieu was one of the great political philosophers of the Enlightenment. Insatiably curious and mordantly funny, he constructed a naturalistic account of the various forms of government, and of the causes that made them what they were and that advanced or constrained their development. He used this account to explain how governments might be preserved from corruption. He saw despotism, in particular, as a standing danger for any government not already despotic, and argued that it could best be prevented by a system in which different bodies exercised legisl … [Click Below for Full Description]

The New-York Magazine 1794 Benjamin Franklin George Washington "..To every description indeed of citizens, let praise be given; but let them persevere in their affectionate vigilance over that precious depository of American happiness, the Constitution of the United States. Let them cherish it too, for the sake of those, who, from every clime, are daily seeking a dwelling in our land. And when in the calm moments of reflection, they shall have retraced the origin and progress of the insurrection, let them determine, whether it has not been fomented by combinations of men, who, careless of consequences, and disregarding the unerring truth, that those who rouse cannot always appease a civil convulsion, have disseminated from an ignorance or perversion of the facts, suspicious, jealousies, and accusations of the whole government.... ....and to verify the anticipations of this government being a safeguard to human rights" -George Washington, 1794 ****** Original and exceedingly rare 1794 volume, January - December. Samuel DUNN
Pubblicata da Laurie e Whittle nell'edizione del "Thomas Kitchin's General Atlas, describing the Whole Universe: being a complete collection of the most approved maps extant; corrected with the greatest care, and augmented from the last edition of D'Anville and Robert with many improvements by other eminent geographers, engraved on Sixty-Two plates, comprising Thirty Seven maps", stampato a Londra nel 1797. L'Australia appare completamente come "New Holland o Terra Australis". [Click Below for Full Description]

(SPENCE, Thomas)
(Stockport?) n.p. 1794 The first part is in 8pp, title 'Printed in the year 1794'; signed at the end 'A Friend to the Poor. Stockport, Jan. 5, 1794'; tears to top edge of pp. 3-6 repaired affecting 8 words, made good in ms.; 3 small repairs to title, not affecting text. The second part is also in 8pp, drop head title, signed 'A Friend to the Poor. Stockport, March, 1794'. Disbound. The first part is ESTC N39223, National Archives & Columbia only; Copac adds Cardiff. The other versions of this pamphlet are all in 4pp. Part II is not recorded - the text begins: 'I have frequently grieved for the poor, on seeing the attempts which have been made to humbug and deceive them ...'. ESTC does not identify the author, but the full text on line indicates that part I is reprinted in Spence's Whole End of Oppression, 1801, a title which is not recorded by Copac or Worldcat but presumably includes the text of The End of Oppression originally published in 1795. There is no indication of a publisher although the possible place of publication, Stockport, was the location of one of Daniel Isaac Eaton's presses, and there was a branch of the London Corresponding Society in a town known more for reaction than revolution - in 1792, the Stockport magistrates had sworn in 70 special constables to enforce the ban on 'seditious writings'. The full text of part I of The Rights of Swine was included in the transcript of the trial of Thomas Hardy as he attended a Crown & Anchor dinner on 15th February, 1794, where the pamphlet was read out. Nice example of this fine 4-sheet map of America, based upon the most recent information and with extensive annotations. The present state of the map is revised according to "Preliminaries of Peace" signed in Versailles on January 20, 1783, England's first formal recognition of the independence of the United States. The map provides a stark contrast between the known and unknown regions, with the eastern parts of North America quite well understood, whereas the mythical River of the West is still shown, seeking a continuous water course from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The map also includes an excellent treatment of South America at the end of the Spanish Colonial empire, based in part on the recenlty published Cruz Cano y Olmedilla map of South America. S.l., s.ind.ed., 1794, Prima edizione. Ottimo esemplare, molto fresco e pulito. Iccu cod. RMSE003868).
[Click Below for Full Description]

(Printed by Childs and Swaine.) [Philadelphia.] 1794. Broadside, 13-1/4" x 8", Minor foxing and soiling. Old fold lines. Housed in a custom clamshell case with leather spine labels and gilt titles. NAIP locates copies at the Library of Congress, Rhode Island Historical Society, and the American Antiquarian Society; OCLC adds just three more.
