The History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies [Two Volumes]

Printed for John Stockdale, London 1794 - xxxvi, 24, 494 pp.; 520 pp.; + plates. Illus. with b/w 16 plates and maps, 3 of which are folding (1 map in 2 sheets, both folding). "A classic in British Caribbean literature and probably the most famous work in the field. Standard for over a century, and still in many respects the best book on the subject up to the close of the 18th century," (Ragatz: British Caribbean History, p. 165). Edwards was a wealthy and successful Caribbean planter, merchant, and banker, and this work reflects that point of view as he argues for free trade with the United States, local autonomy, and the continuation but regulation of slavery. A valuable work for portraying conditions in the period between the conclusion of the American Revolution and the halt to trafficking in slaves. Sabin 21901. Ragatz: p. 165. Griffin 2796. ESTC T136756. Very good copies with chips to ends and edges of backstrips; new spine labels; 3" chip to margin of 1 leaf (p.57, Vol. II), endpapers offset at edges; plates clean but for light marginal foxing; except first part of large folding map with repaired tear in blank area; 1 map and 1 plate foxed.         Voyage philosophique, politique et litteraire, fait en Russie pendant les annees 1788 et 1789.

Briand Paris 1794 - Two volumes 8vo (20 x 13.5 cm). xvi, incl. half-title and title, 387; x incl. half-title and title, 381 pp., with a folding engraved map and 3 plates engraved by Boutrois; closed tear repaired to pp. 323-324. Contemporary marbled paper imitating tree calf, flat calf spines gilt, each with two orange morocco labels lettered in gilt, pink silk bookmarks; a bit rubbed A fine copy of the first edition. Far more than a simple travel account, Chantreau's important work is a full survey of Russia at the end of the reign of Catherine the Great, including physical descriptions, economic considerations, statistical figures and sociological observations - these are smartly compiled from various sources available at the time, since Chantreau actually never travelled to Russia (he lived more than 20 years in Spain). The engraved map, in excellent condition, shows Western Russia and the plates include two scenes linked with the Tsar's wedding and an interpretation of the celebrated monument to Peter the Great in St. Petersburg.         Three Years Travels Through The Interior Parts of North America

1794. Boston: David West, 1794. Third American Edition. Recently rebound in full black leather with five raised bands on the spine and with a gilt stamped, red leather spine label. A 16mo measuring 6 11/16 by 3 3/4 inches with repaired title page and general tanning of the pages.282 of text. Printed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire by Charles Peirce for David West the publisher. This title was first issued in London in 1778. It was not published in the United States until 1784 in Philadelphia with a second edition published in that city in 1789 which edition was reprinted in 1792. We therefore infer this to be a third American edition. (Lee's A Bibliography of Carver's Travels) According to Howes: "Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution." Although an American (by birth) Carver was not able to get his manuscript of his trip (1766-1768) published in this country. He went to London where it was published. (DAB) The popularity of his book lead to many translations, editions and printings in several countries. (Howes, C-215; Evans, 26745, Sabin, 11185; Lee, p165 to 169, DAB, v II, p552)

Acts Passed at the Third Congress

1794 - (UNITED STATES CONGRESS). Acts Passed at the Third Congress of the United States of America. Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia". the Second of December, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-Three. Philadelphia: Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1794. Octavo, modern green cloth, later endpapers. $1800.First edition of the collected Acts Passed at the First Session of the Third Congress under the administration of President Washington, one of only 600 copies printed, containing Hamilton's controversial Carriage Act, laws on the U.S. Mint and international commerce, and the important act prohibiting "the carrying on the Slave-trade from the United States," with the owner signature of "J. Yeates" on the title page very possibly that of Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Jasper Yeates, who played a key role in ending the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion. This first edition of the collected Acts of the First Session of the Third Congress contains those passed from January-June 1794 under the governance of President Washington. This volume covers an especially dangerous time in which the fragile new government struggled to find its place in the world and saw growing internal strife between Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans. Especially notable herein is a printing of the Carriage Act (78-83), which was proposed by Treasury Secretary and ardent Federalist Alexander Hamilton. Enacted in June despite fierce opposition, this would offer the "first clear-cut challenge of the constitutionality of an Act of Congress to come before the Court" and prompted the first case to involve "judicial review""" preceding, by a full seven years, "Chief Justice John Marshall's celebrated opinion in Marbury v. Madison (1803)" (Hall, 419). This volume also contains major laws on the U.S. Mint and Post Office, on the courts and international commerce, and an "Act to prohibit the carrying on the Slave-trade from the United States to any foreign place" (19-21)""representing "the beginning of a long struggle to control effectively a trade which France [and] Great Britain". totally prohibited" (Dumond, 58). All initial printings of bound Acts of Congress are quite scarce and were published at the end of each session by Childs & Swaine, in an edition of only 600 copies for internal distribution. These "bound Acts came to be very hard to get. They were always in short supply. Six hundred copies barely covered the official distribution, left few for the general public, few for the Congressmen themselves". Senators could never find copies of the printings for their own use, neither could cabinet officers nor lesser departmental officials" (Powell, Books of a New Nation, 92). Evans 27827. See Harvard Law Catalogue, 802. The owner signature of "J. Yeates" on the title page is quite possibly that of Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Jasper Yeates, an avowed Federalist who was chosen by Washington to head a commission formed in August 1794 to negotiate a peaceful end to the Whiskey Rebellion (Slaughter, 196-7).Text generally fresh and clean with light scattered foxing, occasional faint soiling. An extremely good copy of one of the founding documents in American history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Reviczky's books, of which he had himself printed a catalogue, were all in very fine condition and contained some of the most desirable items from the La Vallière sale (Paris: 1784). This was the real nucleus of the Spencer library."-De Ricci, p. 73. This edition contains an index for the first time. Bookplates of Wilfred Merton and A.R.A. Hobson. ? Peignot, pp. 193-94-"On en a donné à Berlin, en 1794, une nouvelle édition…avec les augmentations faites successivement à la première; elle est bien exécutée, et peut très bien tenir lieu de l'édition originale."         THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE AND HISTORICAL CHRONICLE. VOLUME LXIV FOR THE YEAR M.DCCXCIV, Part II.

London, Printed by John Nichols, and sold by Eliz. Newbery, 1794.. PART 2 ONLY, 1794. 8vo, approximately 210 x 125 mm, 8¼ x 5 inches, half year of 6 issues, July 1794- December 1794, plus the Supplement, bound together, each month having its own title page with a woodcut of St. John's Gate at the top, 21 plates as called for, 7 with more than 1 image, mostly views of buildings and architectural detail relating to England, plus 1 plate of a reconstructed nose to accompany a letter to the editor describing a surgical procedure developed in India apparently in use for some time (page 891), another of the French Telegraphe, one A striking portrait of St. William King of Scots, pages: (2), 585-1212, (16) - indexes, bound in modern half calf over worn marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering to spine, original endpapers. Armorial bookplate of John Duke of Bedford on front pastedown, large pale damp stain on both blank endpapers, title page slightly trimmed at fore-edge, no loss of printed area, damp stain repeated much smaller and fainter on some plates, hardly noticeable, very occasional light browning to text, an occasional pale fox spot. A very good copy of a very early printed mention in Europe of plastic surgery: "The first report published in Europe on the so-called Indian or Hindu method of rhinoplasty using a forehead flap, accompanied by an engraving of the patient, Cowasjee, with a restored nose and showing the stages of the operation." Garrison & Morton 5735.1. The claim that this was the first mention in Europe is challenged in this volume by another correspondent on page 1093. Edward Cave (1691 ? 1754) launched The Gentleman's Magazine in 1731 creating the first general-interest "magazine" in the modern sense. It soon became the most influential and most imitated periodical of its time. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Engravings, Explaining The Anatomy Of The Bones, Muscles, And Joints

Edinburgh: Printed By John Paterson; For Bell and Bradfute, and T. Duncan; and J. Johnson, and G. G. G. & J. Robinson, London 1794.. First Edition of the text, though all but one of the plates are dated 1804- possibly a remainder; Demy 4to; pp. [6], xxii, 191; Illustrated with Twenty-eight plates, one in two states. (possibly lacking an engraved title), Contemporary calf, re-backed with new burgundy morocco spine label. New endpapers, Ink signature, dated 1808, on title-page. Occasional light foxing and offsetting. On the whole, a very good copy of this scarce and important book. Encouraged by his artistic mother, John Bell had received early training in drawing. He was one of the first to apply anatomical teaching to surgery and is widely regarded as the founder of surgical anatomy. He was the first to ligate the gluteal artery and tied the common carotid and internal iliac. Bell's illustrations are some of the most striking in the entire literature, although not to everyone's taste.

Voyage en Afrique et en Asie, principalement au Japon, pendant les années 1770-1779. Servant de suite au voyage de D. Sparmann; [ ] Traduit de Suédois, avec des notes du traducteur.

Fuchs, Libraire, Paris 1794 - First French Edition. 8vo. pp. xii, 532. (The preface - pp. v-viii - is bound in the rear between pp. 530 and 531). Bound in full period calf with gilt spine. Binding shows rubbing and wear but is still sturdy and attractive. Interior pages contain some minor wear, spotting and age-toning. Periodic corner stress marks and corner creases are present. Pages 281-88 reveal a small spot of worming in the lower margin. Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) was a Swedish botanist and a student of Carl Linnaeus. His travel log (first published in Swedish as "Resa uti Europa, Asia, Africa " in four volumes, 8vo., Uppsala, 1788-93) recounts his botanical collecting voyages with the Dutch East India Company to South Africa, Java and Japan. Among other observations Thunberg describes the Hottentot (Khoikhoi) peoples of South Africa and mentions his visit to Nagasaki in Japan. The translator of the French edition claims that Thunberg’s verbose and detailed style makes an exact translation undesirable. Use was therefore made of Forster’s German abbreviation or abstract but several passages which Forster omitted are here preserved. The final section (pp. 405-450) contains excerpts related to Japan taken from J.G. Georgi’s "Voyage en Sibérie", including a description of Japanese paper-making. A Japanese-French vocabulary is included (pp. 451-486). [Cordier, Japonica, p. 447, Arnold Arboretum, p. 690; Gay 3151]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Zwei Widmungen für Gleim auf einem Albumblatt. [Halberstadt], 23. V. 1794 und 15. V. 1800.
