3seitiger Brief in schwarzer Tinte, Bonn 3.

Rare

        Arte de Nadar

      - (1) f. engraved title, 190 pp., XI full-page single-sided engravings interleaved in text. Quarter bound in contemporary brown calf, brown and green mottled boards, brown marbled endpapers, green silk ribbon bookmark, sprinkled edges. Minor spotting in places, marginal paper loss at p. 187, otherwise quite clean. Rare first Spanish edition (first Italian in 1794) of this attractive illustrated work propounding the ¿Bernardi Method¿ of swimming, which, both in terms of the history of swimming and illustrated books on the subject, had an influence in the late 18th and early 19th century equal to that of Melchisédech Thévenot (1620-92) in the 17th century. The work goes far beyond being an instructional manual touching on areas as diverse as comparative anatomy, iatro-mechanics, respiration, hydrostatics, and even the design and architecture of swimming pools. The engravings of this Spanish edition are reductions of eleven of the ambitiously artistic designs (rather more fanciful than one would expect in a didactic work of this nature) originally produced for the earlier Italian edition, after drawings by Francesco Antonio Lapegna (1769-1817). Although purportedly drawn from life, the subjects are embellished with considerable fantasia, not infrequently resembling ancient statuary, and here and there bordering on risqué. This combination of science, erudition and a slightly indulgent taste for decadent illustration ¿ all devoted to an activity generally viewed at the time as eccentric ¿ makes the work an interesting and representative document of the colorful milieu of late 18th-century Naples as received by readers in early 19th-century Madrid. Apart from this work, nothing is known of Oronzio de¿ Bernardi, a lawyer and holder of honorific ecclesiastical titles, although the first edition¿s warm dedication to the minister of the Neopolitan Navy, Sir John Acton, suggests that Bernardi held an ¿insider¿ position at Court. OCLC locates U.S. copies at the NYPL, UC San Diego, and Harvard; a further copy is held at the Hispanic Society of America. * Palau 28241; Hispanic Society of America, vol.

Briand Paris 1794 - Two volumes 8vo (20 x 13.5 cm). xvi, incl. half-title and title, 387; x incl. half-title and title, 381 pp., with a folding engraved map and 3 plates engraved by Boutrois; closed tear repaired to pp. 323-324. Contemporary marbled paper imitating tree calf, flat calf spines gilt, each with two orange morocco labels lettered in gilt, pink silk bookmarks; a bit rubbed A fine copy of the first edition. Far more than a simple travel account, Chantreau's important work is a full survey of Russia at the end of the reign of Catherine the Great, including physical descriptions, economic considerations, statistical figures and sociological observations - these are smartly compiled from various sources available at the time, since Chantreau actually never travelled to Russia (he lived more than 20 years in Spain). The engraved map, in excellent condition, shows Western Russia and the plates include two scenes linked with the Tsar's wedding and an interpretation of the celebrated monument to Peter the Great in St. Petersburg.         Three Years Travels Through The Interior Parts of North America

1794. Boston: David West, 1794. Third American Edition. Recently rebound in full black leather with five raised bands on the spine and with a gilt stamped, red leather spine label. A 16mo measuring 6 11/16 by 3 3/4 inches with repaired title page and general tanning of the pages.282 of text. Printed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire by Charles Peirce for David West the publisher. This title was first issued in London in 1778. It was not published in the United States until 1784 in Philadelphia with a second edition published in that city in 1789 which edition was reprinted in 1792. We therefore infer this to be a third American edition. (Lee's A Bibliography of Carver's Travels) According to Howes: "Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution." Although an American (by birth) Carver was not able to get his manuscript of his trip (1766-1768) published in this country. He went to London where it was published. (DAB) The popularity of his book lead to many translations, editions and printings in several countries. (Howes, C-215; Evans, 26745, Sabin, 11185; Lee, p165 to 169, DAB, v II, p552)

Acts Passed at the Third Congress

1794 - (UNITED STATES CONGRESS). Acts Passed at the Third Congress of the United States of America. Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia". the Second of December, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-Three. Philadelphia: Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1794. Octavo, modern green cloth, later endpapers. $1800.First edition of the collected Acts Passed at the First Session of the Third Congress under the administration of President Washington, one of only 600 copies printed, containing Hamilton's controversial Carriage Act, laws on the U.S. Mint and international commerce, and the important act prohibiting "the carrying on the Slave-trade from the United States," with the owner signature of "J. Yeates" on the title page very possibly that of Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Jasper Yeates, who played a key role in ending the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion. This first edition of the collected Acts of the First Session of the Third Congress contains those passed from January-June 1794 under the governance of President Washington. This volume covers an especially dangerous time in which the fragile new government struggled to find its place in the world and saw growing internal strife between Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans. Especially notable herein is a printing of the Carriage Act (78-83), which was proposed by Treasury Secretary and ardent Federalist Alexander Hamilton. Enacted in June despite fierce opposition, this would offer the "first clear-cut challenge of the constitutionality of an Act of Congress to come before the Court" and prompted the first case to involve "judicial review""" preceding, by a full seven years, "Chief Justice John Marshall's celebrated opinion in Marbury v. Madison (1803)" (Hall, 419). This volume also contains major laws on the U.S. Mint and Post Office, on the courts and international commerce, and an "Act to prohibit the carrying on the Slave-trade from the United States to any foreign place" (19-21)""representing "the beginning of a long struggle to control effectively a trade which France [and] Great Britain". totally prohibited" (Dumond, 58). All initial printings of bound Acts of Congress are quite scarce and were published at the end of each session by Childs & Swaine, in an edition of only 600 copies for internal distribution. These "bound Acts came to be very hard to get. They were always in short supply. Six hundred copies barely covered the official distribution, left few for the general public, few for the Congressmen themselves". Senators could never find copies of the printings for their own use, neither could cabinet officers nor lesser departmental officials" (Powell, Books of a New Nation, 92). Evans 27827. See Harvard Law Catalogue, 802. The owner signature of "J. Yeates" on the title page is quite possibly that of Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Jasper Yeates, an avowed Federalist who was chosen by Washington to head a commission formed in August 1794 to negotiate a peaceful end to the Whiskey Rebellion (Slaughter, 196-7).Text generally fresh and clean with light scattered foxing, occasional faint soiling. An extremely good copy of one of the founding documents in American history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Garrison & Morton 5735.1. The claim that this was the first mention in Europe is challenged in this volume by another correspondent on page 1093.         An Accurate Map of the United States of America according to the treaty of Peace of 1783.

Interesting early map of the United States, from the London edition of Winterbotham, which was later re-issued in Atlas format by John Reid in Now York in his American Atlas. Excellent detail, many Indian Tribes noted.
