SANTA ANNA [or SANTANA], Joaquim José de.
Lisbon, Na Officina de Simão Thaddeo Ferreira, 1793. 4°, late twentieth-century crimson full Oasis morocco, spine with raised bands in five compartments, gilt letter in second compartment from head, marbled endleaves, text-block edges with contemporary sprinkling. Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Typographical headpieces. Crisp and clean. In fine condition. Early signature effaced from lower margin of title page. viii, 279 pp., 3 folding engraved plates. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this textbook on the anatomy and diseases of the eye. Santa Anna was the first Portuguese to specialize in ophthalmology, and he raised that branch of medicine to a level previously unknown in his country. He acknowledges (pp. vii-viii) that the section of the Elementos on anatomy and physiology is a translation of Deshais-Gendron's Traité des maladies des yeux, 1770, but states that he made numerous corrections based on his own experience: "Aqui forão necessarias hum maior número de emendas, tanto em Anatomia, como em Fysica." Likewise the section on pathology and therapy is a translation from Plenck's Doctrina de morbis oculorum, 1777, but has numerous corrections based on Santa Anna's experience. The first folding plate shows a surgeon and an assistant performing a cataract operation, while a dog sleeps peacefully behind the surgeon's chair. It is signed by Silva as artist and Queiroz as engraver. Gregorio Francisco de Queiroz (1768-1845) was one of the most skillful and most creative Portuguese engravers of any century, and produced an enormous oeuvre (Soares, História da gravur … [Click Below for Full Description]

STEELE, Richard.
York: G. Peacock, 1793. Quarto, 3 folding plates, contemporary (?original) marbled boards, calf spine renewed. A singular work written and published at the cusp of the fashion for exotics, which provides a most interesting overview of the state of play in England in the early 1790s. Richard Steele, a Yorkshire gardener who lived and worked around Thirsk, wrote the work as "an attempt to aid in the management of that most elegantly-refined and fascinating department of the Garden, where the prodigious variety of rare plants that have been introduced into this kingdom, from the hot regions of the terraqueous globe, are deposited...".What is immediately noticeable is that while there are established collections from the East and West Indies, and while British gardens were beginning to have really substantial collections of Cape plants, there is still only a handful of Australian plants available for cultivation. Published in the same year as Smith's Botany, this work describes six Australian plants, all apparently collected before the First Fleet era. The Eucalyptus obliqua noticed by Steele, for example, was the first major plant to be routinely noticed as growing in England, and is known to have been collected in Tasmania by Furneaux in 1774 and Cook in 1777, being first figured in France in 1788. Thus, while Steele's work includes notes on how best to grow each species, most of the notes on Australian plants display some uncertainty, as with the entry on the eucalpyt: "I cannot speak with certainty as to the propagation of this plant; but most of the South Sea woody plants … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Paris), Chez Desenne, (1793-1794). 7 numbers bound in 1 volume. 1-64, (57)-72, 65-172 pp. (actualy therefore 188 pages). 8vo. 19th-century polished calf, spine with raised bands, discoloured Hatin 147; Martin & Walter, Journaux, 1402; Tourneux, ii, 10916. All published, original edition. The most eloquent journal of the Revolution. Under attack by the very radical Hébertists for poor attendance at the Convention and for socializing with the wealthy, Desmoulins published the journal as his defense. Perhaps the Terror also offended him because after blasting his assailants, he printed subtle but telling indictments of the Terror and called for clemency. It has also been suggested by many historians that Desmoulins acted to support Danton and his associates who were at the same time attacking the Hébertists and trying to limit the Terror. Thompson, in his two volume study on Robespierre even states that the aim of the journal was not to moderate the gouvernment, but to overthrow it. Whatever the truth may be, the Committee of Public Safety decided to eliminate its political opponents, which included Desmoulins, He was executed on 13 April 1794. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
