François-Xavier Lanthenas
Paris, Imprimerie Nationale, 1793. [Click Below for Full Description]

Wightman, Julia P.
Paris: Chez Desnos, 1793. First edition. Full Morocco. Very Good. Scarce, with only known copy at the Morgan Library, and this copy appears not to include the latter portion, or "Le Secretaire". 96, 42, [12] pp. 10 hand-colored plates, including the title page. Sixteen of the paginated pages are of musical notation, the latter pages (of the "L'Amant") being song lyrics mostly. The color plates are mostly of l'Ancien Regime court life, with a touch of seraphs or Rococo effects embellishing the frivolity. The contemporary full leather binding has light wear but is very well-preserved overall, with but the original pencil, used to clasp the binding shut, missing.

Lagarde, 1793. In 8° (mm 200x110); pagg. LX, (2), 482. Testo in carattere gotico. Seconda edizione. Ottimo esemplare marginoso, su carta vergellata, in bella impressione. Antica nota manoscritta alla guardia ant. Timbrino di appartenenza all'interno dei piatti. Lievi tracce d'uso a spigoli e cuffie.

Gay, John. William Blake.
1793. London: John Stockdale, 1793. Royal 8vo, 2 vols bound in 1, xi, 225; vii, 160 pp. Engraved frontispiece to vol 1, engraved title to each vol., and 70 plates, with 12 engraved by Blake. This copy does not contain the last 27 pp of vol 2 which is the Life of Gay section, sometimes omitted. Old half calf over brown cloth, moderate wear to spine ends and corners, with black leather label to spine with gilt title. § First edition, first issue with Blake's plates. William Blake completely redesigned, and redrew, the 12 images for which he is responsible, and is listed among the subscribers to the edition, as are the other engravers who worked on this project. Blake engraved the plates opposite pp.1, 29, 59, 73, 99, 109, 125, 133 and 181 in volume one; and those opposite pp.1, 105 and 145 in volume two." (Sotheran's). The first issue is easily identified because it uses the long "s" throughout and the second does not. The illustrations in the set of Aesop were all based on those of Francis Barlow in his great edition of 1666 (which survives primarily in the reprint of 1687), with the clothing of the depicted humans updated to the late 18th century. A good copy with generous margins; a few plates and pages showing foxing but generally clean throughout. The 12 Blake plates are good with only two where the surrounds are showing any significant foxing : these are at p 29 of vol. 1 and p.105 of vol. 2. The title to vol. 2 has been torn (without any text incursion) prior to its (apparent) 19th C binding and then remounted. Bentley, BB, 460 A. Full contemporary calf a bit scuffed and untidy but quite sound, internally very good despite the usual browning and offsetting, and with huge margins. Well mapped topography and tribes of Eastern Russia. Includes a Russian to French translation key for geographical terms. Copperplate engraving and etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This map originates from an unrecorded composite Atlas compiled around 1795 (based on youngest dated map) which contained many maps originally published in the famous 'Atlas Universel.', by de Vaugondy, first published in 1757. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In the late 18th c. the plates of these maps were acquired by Delamarche. Fabbroni, Adamo
