Plan of the Siege of York Town in Virginia

London, 1793. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 10.75" x 12.75". This battle plan of the Siege at Yorktown is an important contemporary representation of an important historical moment in the American Revolution. This second issue of the map, originally published in Banastre Tarleton's "A History of the Campaigns of 1780 & 1781" is from a re-engraving made for Stedman's 1793 "History of the American War." The battle involved a surprise attack by the French and the Americans on Cornwallis's troops statined in the Lower Chesapeake. The map has troop and forts labeled as French, British, and American according to a key in the lower left corner. The map also has a number of features of the siege itself, such as sunken vessels, notes on the lines of attach, and the positions of general including Lincoln, Lafayette, Washington and Rochambeau. Forts, positions, roads and topographical details are given. The map is in very good condition with a narrow left margin. Some stains and foxing. Philadelphia-born military historian Charles Stedman was a Loyalist who served under General Cornwallis. After escaping American capture, he published his authoritative two-volume history of the war, which is seen today as the best contemporary account of the Revolution from the British side. This map is a fine example of his work.

        [Rural Scene]

London: Published by D. Orme & Co. at the Morland Gallery, 14 Old Bond Street, May 1, 1793. Hand-coloured soft-ground etching. In good condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark. Paper discolouration on bottom corners. A few small tears in right edge of sheet. 21 1/8 x 16 1/8 inches. A delicate image of country life by one of England's most renowned genre painters, George Morland George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. Morland is considered a master of genre, his beautiful paintings depict with insightful subtly the tender side of English country life. This is a wonderful example of Morland's delicate style. A young mother busies herself hanging out washing while her young child plays on the banks of a small stream. A happy dog drinks out of the pool completing the feeling of contentment in this pretty picture.

Presumably its first exhibition catalogue was issued that year or in 1769; the second was certainly issued in 1770, though extant copies of that exhibition are on paper watermarked "1825." Copies of all early issues are uncommon. For example, ESTC T12724 for 1793 locates copies in the BL, and the National Gallery; Huntington, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Penn State (Pattee).

Folio, 397 x 230 mms., pp. vi, [7], 8 - 1080, weighing 5.7 kg. (12 pounds, 9 ounces), engraved frontispiece and 89 full-age engraved plates and maps, contemporary calf, rebacked, with old spine ornately gilt in compartments and red morocco label laid down, top and base of spine finely restored; covers scratched, but an interesting copy, with a small rectangular red morocco label, 110 x 42 mms., on the front paste-down end-paper, "John Hodges and Sarah Stroud/ Rotherhithe/ 1792," with their succeeding family history on five leaves at the end. A web site on the genealogy of the Hodges-Stroud alliance suggests that they never married, and that Louisa Lancaster Hodges, their daughter was baptised on 30 May 1794 at St. Mary's Rotherhithe, but went by the mother's surname. In fact, one of the records on the end-papers records, "Louisa Lancaster Stroud, the Daughter of the of the Aforementioned, Born May 8th 1794, Twenty Eight Minutes Past vie in the Morning at No. 296 Rotherhithe Street, Rother[hithe] & Baptised 30th May at St Marys Rotherhithe by the Rev. Shearman, Godfather, Mr. Willm Lancaster Snr Godmothers Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Baldwin." Timothy Priestley (1734 - 1814), one of six children of Jonas Priestley and Mary Swift and younger brother to Joseph Priestley (1733 - 1804), trained himself to work with brass and wood to make models for his older brother, but at an early age became interested in the dissenting ministry, and in 1760 was ordained priest to take up a role as past to a congregation at Kipping, Thornton, near Bradford. He eventually wound up in London, as minister of the Jewin Street Independent Church, London. At the same time he also edited the Christian's Magazine, or, Gospel Repository, which was designed to counteract unitarianism, with Selina, Countess of Huntingdon as the magazine's patron. ODNB gives the date of publication of this edition of the Bible as 1792, which is probably accurate, given the evidence of the bookplate. This seems to correspond to ESTC T95041, with copies located at the BL, Wisconsin-Madison, Chicago; and Dunedin in New Zealand What appears to be another issue, ESTC T200457 is located in the John Rylands Library. However, T95041 mentions two lists of subscribers, which are not present in this volume; nor is the portrait of Priestley, which is called for in the "Instructions to the Binder," but the somewhat eccentric placing of the plates and the admonitions about impressing the engravings, etc. suggest that each copy of the Bible was bound separately from the original issue numbers and that no two copies are likely to be exactly the same.

The Reports of Sir Edward Coke, in English in Thirteen Parts Complete

1793. Coke, Sir Edward [1552-1643]. George Wilson, Editor and Translator. The Reports of Sir Edward Coke, Knt. in English, In Thirteen Parts Complete; With References to All the Ancient and Modern Books of the Law; Exactly Translated and Compared with the First and Last Edition in French, and Printed Page for Page With the Same. To Which Are Now Added the Respective Pleadings, In English. The Whole Newly Revised and Carefully Corrected and Translated with Many Additional Notes and References. Dublin: Printed for J. Moore, 1793. Seven volumes. Octavo (8" x 5"). Contemporary calf, blind fillets to boards, raised bands and red and black lettering pieces to spines, a few volumes rebacked retaining original spines. Moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, some chipping to spine ends, a few boards beginning to separate from text blocks, some hinges cracked or starting, light toning to text, darker in places. Later owner signatures to front endleaves, interiors otherwise clean. * Reprint of the London edition, 1776-77. Each volume has general title-page, and each part has special title-page. Prefaces in Latin and English in parallel columns. First published at the beginning of the seventeenth century, Coke's Reports are not reports in the conventional sense but highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized according to the cases they consider. In each instance Coke assembled a large body of cases, outlined their arguments, and explained the reasons for the judgment, using it as a basis for a statement of general principles. Taken together, the Reports form the most extensive and detailed treatment of common law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority, it was often cited as The Reports, there being no need to mention the author's name. The first edition in English, which did not include pleadings, was published in 1658.       Cap-Français. Oct. 10, 1793.. Broadside, 18 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches, completed in manuscript. Old fold lines. Light wear and soiling. Very good. During the early years of the French Revolution, Sonthonax was the civil commissioner of Saint-Domingue, which would soon become Haiti. A radical Jacobin, he presided over a chaotic period of conflicts between royalists and revolutionaries, and between whites, free people of color, and slaves in full revolt. He is most remembered for freeing the colony's slaves on Aug. 29, 1793, in an effort to gain the support of Toussaint L'Ouverture's forces against the Spanish. This document appoints the mulatto general Villate, a rival of Toussaint's, as military commander of the Cape. It is signed by Sonthonax and countersigned by French military leader Etienne LaVeaux, who later assumed the governorship for himself, but he held power only briefly before being deposed by Toussaint. A large woodcut vignette proclaiming "La Republique Française, Une et Indivisible" heads the document. All early printed material from Saint Domingue is, in and of itself, rare by nature. A handsome and important piece, signed by two important figures in the early Haitian revolution, formalizing the rise to power of a third.

The literary life of the late Thomas Pennant, Esq. By himself [hand-colored]

London: Sold by Benjamin and John White, Fleet-Street, and Robert Faulder, New Bond Street, M.DCC.XCIII. [1793]. First Edition. Three-Quarter Calf. Near Fine. 4to: [6],144pp, copper-engraved portrait frontispiece of Pennant ("Tho.s Gainsborough, pinx.t 1776, engraved by W. Ridley"), two copper-engraved full-page plates (view of the Church of Fountains Abby and portrait of the reverend John Lloyd ("constant friend companion & assistant to Thomas Pennant"—often lacking) and folding engraved plate of The Church Militant (almost always lacking), with contemporary hand-coloring, bound in at page 21. Modern three-quarter mid-tan calf gilt, olive-green leather lettering piece gilt, five raised bands ruled in gilt, cinnamon cloth sides, top edge gilt, end papers renewed. An excellent copy, with minor discoloration to spine; text bright and fresh (fore-edge of final page soiled); upper inner margins of plates uniformly water-stained, touching image of one plate only; colored plate lightly foxed. Sabin 59758. ESTC Citation No. T845. OCLC Number: 2804597. First Edition. The Literary Life hints at both Pennant's sense of humor ("The title-page announces the termination of my authorial existence, which took place on March 1st, 1791.") and immense industry beyond just the natural history and traveling writing that made him famous. It is signed only by dotted lines to indicate the author's death (in fact, Pennant lived for five years after its publication) and the History of the Parishes ends with ‘RESURGAM,' implying literary resurrection. The book's several collected shorter works (the appendices) highlight Pennant's responsibilities as high sheriff of Flintshire, as pamphleteer on road management and the militia laws, and as improver of his own estates. Includes an appendix on the Patagonians and notices of Falkner's travels in Bolivia, La Plata and the Straits of Magellan. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        William Evelyn, Esq

London: Published by George Townly Stubbs, 3 August, 1793. Roulette work with stipple. State ii/ii, with the engraved inscription: 'Geo. Stubbs Pinxt. - Geoe. Townly Stubbs Sculpt. Engraver to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales / London pubd. August 3rd 1793 by G T Stubbs No. 86 Hugh Stt. Marylebone'. In good condition with the exception of being expertly re-margined. Skillfully mended tears on top margin extending into image. 17 5/8 x 21 1/2 inches. 18 5/8 x 22 3/8 inches. A striking portrait of William Evelyn by one of the most famous English painters, George Stubbs. A wonderful portrait of William Evelyn which demonstrates Stubbs' remarkable talents as a portrait painter. George Stubbs is considered one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley, a relationship that quickly ended, leaving the young artist to his own tuition. In contrast to contemporary academic theory, Stubbs attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous 'Anatomy of the Horse', which details, with beautiful engraving, the various elements of a horse's anatomy, from skeletal form to muscular definition. Continuing in search of innovation, Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums, becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground, and etching techniques. Stubbs' masterful paintings inspired some of the greatest engravers of the day to reproduce his work for publication, including his own son George Townly Stubbs who reproduced with faithful accuracy the sublime emotion inherent in his father's exquisite works. Stubbs was elected director of the Society of Artists and a Royal Academician, and today his prized paintings are housed in some of the finest museums in the world. The gap between the date of the painting (1771) and the engraving (1793), is unusual and falls outside the typical publishing practices of the father and son team. This long delay is difficult to explain since Evelyn was at neither time a topical figure. It is possible, therefore, either Stubbs or his son percieved a commercial demand for portraits and figure subjects in the 1790's, or that they were keen to publicise Stubbs' proficiency as a portrait painter. Interestingly, Evelyn's portrait was an unusually expensive print, retailing at 1 guinea for standard impressions and 2 guineas for colour printed copies and proofs. This price was double what Stubbs was asking for some of his most popular prints. Lennox-Boyd, George Stubbs 96, ii/ii; Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints p.271

The first 8vo edition of what is perhaps the greatest biography ever written in the English language, in a fine contemporary binding. The "chronological catalogue of the prose works of Samuel Johnson" appears in this edition for the first time. This set with the alphabetical table of contents before the text rather than at the end of volume 3, as is often the case and with the scarce leaf of corrections and additions following the contents. Celebrated for its intimacy and vividness, Boswell's Life of Johnson "is one of the best books in the world. It is assuredly a great, very great work. Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic Poets,--Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of Dramatists,--Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of Orators, than Boswell is the first of Biographers..." (Macauley, in the Edinburgh Review, 1831). Boswell learned a great deal about the art of biography from his subject, and brought to his task boundless curiosity, persistence, and zest. Boswell had been collecting material for this work since his first interview with Johnson in 1763, and was confident that his kind of biography, "which gives not only a History of Johnson's visible progress through the world, and of his publications, but a view of his mind in his letters and conversations, is the most perfect that can be conceived, and will be more of a Life than any work that has ever yet appeared.

        The Adventurer

London: printed for Silvester Doig, 1793 4 vols. iii, 250; 238; 249; 244 p. 18 cm. Frontispiece in each volume. New edition. Full tree calf leather, outer hinges cracked, spines chipped. Bookplates. Owner's signature on title page. Foxing. Volume three has a stain on p 43-57. Contains all 140 issues of The Adventurer, which ran from 1752-1754. Of the 140 issues, about 25 are by Samuel Johnson. The last number of Johnson's 'Rambler' appeared on March 14, 1752. Encouraged by its success, Hawkesworth, in company with Johnson, Bathurst, and Warton, started the "Adventurer". The first number was published on Nov. 7, 1752, and the last on March 9, 1754. This series of essays was a great success, and has been frequently reprinted. Hawkesworth signed the last essay with his full name. He wrote some 70 or 72 of the papers. Hawkesworth had considerable literary talent. So successful was he in the imitation of Johnson's style that Catherine Talbot declared that she discerned Dr. Johnson 'though all the papers". At the beginning of his career he was an intimate friend of Johnson, and was a member of the Rambler Club. The success of the 'Adventurer', according to Hawkins, 'elated him too much' and soon after attaining his Lambeth degree his intimacy with Johnson ceased.

Modern half leather. ---- Dibner 30; Sparrow 184; Nissen, BBI 1883; Stafleu-C. 12.672; DSB XII, p.588; Norman 1990. - FIRST EDITION. AN IMPORTANT WORK THAT FIRST DEFINED THE FUNCTION OF INSECTS IN PLANT POLLINATION, AND 'PROVIDED DARWIN WITH EVIDENCE FOR HIS THEORY OF EVOLUTION' (DSB XII, p.588). A student of Ernst Ludwig Heim (who also taught Alexander von Humboldt), Sprengel commenced his study of pollination in geraniums in 1787, and the function of insects and the flower's structures in the process, leading him to interpret the 'mystery' of the flower's botanical attributes through pollination and hence reproduction. 'His rediscovery of dichogamy ... led him to one of his major conclusions: "Nature appears not to have intended that any flower should be fertilized by its own pollen". This doctrine, together with the even more important view of the close integration of floral structures with insect visitation, was the first attempt to explain the origin of organic forms from definite relations to the environment' (DSB). However, Sprengel's ideas were not understood or appreciated at the time of publication, and his work remained little-known in his lifetime. It was only when a later generation of botanists investigated the field that the significance of Sprengel's work was understood, as Darwin acknowledged in The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom: 'Long before I had attended to the fertilisation of flowers, a remarkable book appeared in 1793 in Germany ... by C.K. Sprengel, in which he clearly proved by innumerable observations, how essential a part insects play in the fertilisation of many plants. But he was in advance of his age, and his discoveries were for a long time neglected..
