The Cratylus, Phaedo, Parmenides, Timaeus, and Critias of Plato translated from the Greek by Thomas Taylor, with notes on the Cratylus, and an explanatory introduction to each dialogue.

Benjamin and John White, London 1793 - First Taylor edition, 8vo, pp. xxiii, [1], 554, [1] errata; slightly later polished brown calf, double gilt rules on covers enclosing an ornate blindstamped border, rebacked, black morocco label on gilt paneled spine; good and sound. Bookplates of Francis M. Cunningham and Prof. Henry Jackson. Brueggemann, p. 154: "The translator's reverence for his author has determined him to aim at literal exactness, rather than at flowing and elegant periods. Accordingly, this translation, with all its singularities and defects, will be found an useful work. The learned reader will find, that though this translation is in certain parts somewhat more difficult, than perfectly accords with the translator's plan of literal exactness, it on the whole gives the sense of the original with tolerable accuracy. Mr. Taylor will, we hope, persevere in his purpose of translating the rest of the Dialogues of Plato not attempted by Mr. Syndenham" (Analectical Review for October, 1793).       Cap-Français. Oct. 10, 1793. - Broadside, 18 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches, completed in manuscript. Old fold lines. Light wear and soiling. Very good. During the early years of the French Revolution, Sonthonax was the civil commissioner of Saint-Domingue, which would soon become Haiti. A radical Jacobin, he presided over a chaotic period of conflicts between royalists and revolutionaries, and between whites, free people of color, and slaves in full revolt. He is most remembered for freeing the colony's slaves on Aug. 29, 1793, in an effort to gain the support of Toussaint L'Ouverture's forces against the Spanish. This document appoints the mulatto general Villate, a rival of Toussaint's, as military commander of the Cape. It is signed by Sonthonax and countersigned by French military leader Etienne LaVeaux, who later assumed the governorship for himself, but he held power only briefly before being deposed by Toussaint. A large woodcut vignette proclaiming "La Republique Française, Une et Indivisible" heads the document. All early printed material from Saint Domingue is, in and of itself, rare by nature. A handsome and important piece, signed by two important figures in the early Haitian revolution, formalizing the rise to power of a third.

Bowyer's Edition of The History of England,

ONT> 1793 - The complete Bowyer's edition of David Hume's seminal work, The History of England, offered here in the publisher's original bindings. A rare example of this work as it was originally offered to its subscribers, inpaper and cardfolios at One Guinea each Number, to be paid for on delivery. These volumes often also contain loosely inserted notes to the subscribers from Bowyer, apologising for delays to publication or for a decreased number of plates in a previous instalment- the latter being blamed on thetardiness of the various engravers commissioned for the project. Indeed, their raw state offers a unique insight into the financial woes that plagued Bowyer during the publication of this work and his need to keep wealthy subscribers happy. As, in 1806 (the date given to the title pages provided in the final 'index' instalment),after Bowyer had published five large folios reaching the year 1688, 'the work was ceased and never fully completed, owing to the high costs involved, a loss of 30,000 said already to have been incurred. ' (ODNB)These interesting publisher's notes also explain the rather sporadic allocation of engraved plates per volume -which vary between 1 and 5 in each folio - with Bowyer frequently promising four or more plates in following instalments, as recompense for previous 'two plate' folios. However, all plates are present, totalling the required 196 plates, including the frontispiece portrait of Hume, engraved dedications and engraved full-page chapter headings:1-10: [3] 1-36, [3] 37-72, [3] 73-108, [2] 109-144, [3] 145-180, [2] 181-216, [3] 217-252, [2] 253-288, [3] 289-324, [2] 325-360. 11-20: [3] 361-396, [3] 397-432, [3] 433-468, [3] 469-504, [3] 505-540, [3] 541-576, [2] 577-612, [3] 613-648, [3] 649-684, [2] 685-720. 21-30: [4] 721-759, [3] 1-40, [3] 41-80, [3] 81-119,[3] 121-160, [3] 161-200, [3] 201-240, [3] 241-280, [3] 281-320, [3] 321-360. 31-40: [3] 361-400, [3] 401-440, [3] 441-476, [3] 477-512, [2] 513-548, [3] 549-584, [3] 585-620, [3] 621-656, [3] 657-692, [3] 693-728. 41-50: [3] 729-776, [3] 777-824, [3] 825-872, [3] 873-883/1-36, [3] 37-84, [3] 85-132, [3] 133-180, [3] 181-227, [2] 229-276, [3] 277-324. 51-60: [3] 325-372, [3] 373-420, [3] 421-468,[3] 469-528, [3] 529-588, [3] 589-672, [3] 673-756, [2] 757-821, [2] 1-64, [3] 65-128. 61-65: (bound in one) [12]129-648. 66-70: [2] 649-752, [1] 753-836/1-20, [5] 21-124, [3] 125-288, [4] 289-487. Index: Five title pages and 'A Life of Hume'. Included alongside the complete work are additional duplicate volumes of numbers 62, 63 and 64: [3] 233-336, [2] 337-440, [3] 441-544. An extraordinary compendium of British history and art, this work isfascinating in its original state. However its included title pages and the careful designation of individual volumes by the publisher (with splits between the five planned volumesindicated in folios 22, 44 and59) also offer a rare opportunity to bind this deservedly revered history in a fine and personal binding. First edition thus. Scarce. Condition: In publisher's original bindings with paper labels. Externally, worn. Many have entirely lost their backstrips, those with remaining paper show splits, tears and lifting to backstrips. Boards are rubbed and marked, although labels are generally intact and legible. Majority of joints are starting but most boards are held firmly. Exceptions are 50, 52, 66 and 67 which have either very tender or detached (but present)boards. Internally, generally firmly bound but tender in places - namely: volumes 61-65 and 68 in which the plates are loose but present. Volume 33 is bound in upside down. Some variedfoxing throughout, generally confined to first plate of each folio and the tissueguards, most of which are present. Some offsetting onto endpapers involumes 40-50. Text is generally very bright and clean, as are many of the otherplates. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Text block internally separated from spine, text block split between first five titles and sixth title. Other parts of text block separating and splitting. Some foredges worn, some leaves loose. Age-toning, occasional foxing and staining. See below for additional descriptions of individual titles. About good. A wonderful collection of works by and about the controversial American author, Thomas Paine, all printed in the United States between 1793 and 1796 and collected in a single contemporary volume. The two works by Paine are THE AGE OF REASON and THE AGE OF REASON. PART THE SECOND; the three contemporary responses to Paine's writing include works by James Tytler, Gilbert Wakefield, and Ebenezer Bradford; and the sixth title is an early American edition of THE TRIAL OF THOMAS PAINE, concerning the Paine's trial as the author of seditious literature which began in London in December 1792. The titles contained in this volume are as follows: 1) Paine, Thomas: THE AGE OF REASON: BEING AN INVESTIGATION OF TRUE AND OF FABULOUS THEOLOGY. Boston: Thomas Hall, 1794. 58pp. 12mo. Lacks titlepage, pp.3-4 torn, with contemporary thread repair; pp.25-26 torn in upper corner (loss of page numbers and a few words), final blank has clean tear. One of Paine's most famous works, here in one of eight American editions printed in 1794, following French and English language editions published in France the same year. Paine's treatise on his religious beliefs created much controversy, and many authors wished to contribute to its refutation. "Paine completed THE AGE OF REASON (1794), an attack on organized Christianity and the idea of the divine inspiration of the Bible. A second part appeared in 1795. Although Paine, a deist, insisted, 'I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life,' THE AGE OF REASON made his name anathema among the clergy and devout Christians on both sides of the Atlantic" - ANB. NAIP w031697. EVANS 27458. GIMBEL 89 (New York 1794 ed). OCLC 4917206, 26637983. ANB 16, pp.925-28 (Paine). 2) Paine, Thomas: THE AGE OF REASON. PART THE SECOND. BEING AN INVESTIGATION OF TRUE AND OF FABULOUS THEOLOGY. [Philadelphia]: Printed [by Benjamin Franklin Bache] for the booksellers, 1796. vii,100pp. including half title. 12mo. The second part of THE AGE OF REASON, first printed in France through the efforts of Joel Barlow while Paine was in prison in Luxembourg. "Paine had 15,000 copies of Part Two printed in English in Paris and forwarded them in September, 1795, to Benjamin Franklin Bache of Philadelphia. But these copies did not arrive in America until April, 1796, long after the work had been reprinted here, taken from the [earlier] London edition pirated by Symonds [also in 1795]" - Gimbel. NAIP w031706. EVANS 30942. GIMBEL 99 (Paris 1795 ed). OCLC 39441776, 20191906. 3) Tytler, James: PAINE'S SECOND PART OF THE AGE OF REASON ANSWERED. Salem: Thomas C. Cushing, 1796. 107pp. 12mo. One of numerous contemporary responses to Paine's THE AGE OF REASON. Tytler was a writer of numerous miscellaneous pieces, including remarks on the first part of THE AGE OF REASON. He had also served as the second editor of the ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA between 1776 and 1784. He emigrated to America in 1793 and published a newspaper in Salem until his death in 1805. NAIP w027560. EVANS 31328. OCLC 5276106. DNB XIX, pp.1379-80 (Tytler). 4) Wakefield, Gilbert: AN EXAMINATION OF THE AGE OF REASON, OR AN INVESTIGATION OF TRUE AND FABULOUS THEOLOGY, BY THOMAS PAINE. Boston: David West, 1794. 36pp. 12mo. Tear in inner margin of pp.23-24 with loss of a dozen words. Wakefield's classic response to Paine's THE AGE OF REASON, printed in the same year as the first London edition. "The clear logic evidenced by Paine's AGE OF REASON, PART I, immediately brought forth a number of answers, the most important of which was Gilbert Wakefield's EXAMINATION OF THE AGE OF REASON, which appeared in 1794 and went through many editions" - Gimbel. NAIP w009431. EVANS 28016. GIMBEL 90 (London 1794 ed). OCLC 12186621. 5) [Bradford, Ebenezer]: MR. THOMAS PAINE'S TRIAL; BEING AN EXAMINATION OF HIS AGE OF REASON. TO WHICH IS ADDED TWO ADDRESSES, THE FIRST TO THE DEISTS, AND THE SECOND TO THE YOUTHS OF AMERICA. WITH SOME BRIEF REMARKS ON GILBERT WAKEFIELD'S EXAMINATION OF SAID AGE OF REASON. Boston: Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews, 1795. v,[2],8- 79pp. 12mo. Attributed by Evans to Bradford, this response to THE AGE OF REASON also includes remarks on Wakefield's response to Paine's text. Printed in Boston by Thomas and Andrews, who had earlier published THE TRIAL OF THOMAS PAINE, the sixth title bound in this volume (below). NAIP w026307. EVANS 28338. OCLC 21937580. 6) [Paine, Thomas]: THE TRIAL OF THOMAS PAINE; FOR A LIBEL, CONTAINED IN THE SECOND PART OF RIGHTS OF MAN. BEFORE LORD KENYON, AND A SPECIAL JURY, AT GUILDHALL, DECEMBER 18, 1792. WITH THE SPEECHES OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND MR. ERSKINE AT LARGE. Boston: I. Thomas and E.T. Andrews, 1793. 43pp. Small quarto. Foredge of titlepage and first two leaves of text worn, affecting a dozen words, worming on last printed page, affecting a few letters. An early American edition recording Paine's trial for libel, wherein it is described how Paine, "wishing and intending this mischief did, on the 16th of February, 1791, wickedly, falsely, maliciously, scandalously, and seditiously publish a certain book, called the SECOND PART OF RIGHTS OF MAN." Gimbel notes that at the time of the trial "Paine was in France, sitting as a member of the French National Convention, which was acting as a jury in the trial of Louis XVI...Despite the brilliance of Paine's attorney, Thomas Erskine, Paine was found guilty, declared an outlaw and the RIGHTS OF MAN contraband." NAIP w038492. EVANS 26280. GIMBEL 78 (London 1793 ed). OCLC 9138093. An intriguing collection of American imprints by and about Paine, bound in a single contemporary volume.

Droits de l'homme en réponse a l'attaque de M. Burke sur la Révolution françoise.

Buisson, 1793-1792, Paris, - Due voll. in 8°, pagg. (4), 239, (1); (4), IV, 224; legatura mezza pelle, titoli oro su tassello. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Elementos de cirurgia ocular ?.

Lisbon, Na Officina de Simão Thaddeo Ferreira, 1793. - Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Typographical headpieces. viii, 279 pp., 3 folding engraved plates. 4°, late twentieth-century crimson full Oasis morocco, spine with raised bands in five compartments, gilt letter in second compartment from head, marbled endleaves, text-block edges with contemporary sprinkling. Crisp and clean. Overall fine. Early signature effaced from lower margin of title-page. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this textbook on the anatomy and diseases of the eye. Santa Anna was the first Portuguese to specialize in ophthalmology, and he raised that branch of medicine to a level previously unknown in his country. He acknowledges (pp. vii-viii) that the section of the @Elementos on anatomy and physiology is a translation of Deshais-Gendron's @Traité des maladies des yeux, 1770, but states that he made numerous corrections based on his own experience: "Aqui forão necessarias hum maior número de emendas, tanto em Anatomia, como em Fysica." Likewise the section on pathology and therapy is a translation from Plenck's @Doctrina de morbis oculorum, 1777, but has numerous corrections based on Santa Anna's experience. The first folding plate shows a surgeon and an assistant performing a cataract operation, while a dog sleeps peacefully behind the surgeon's chair. It is signed by Silva as artist and Queiroz as engraver. Gregorio Francisco de Queiroz (1768-1845) was one of the most skillful and most creative Portuguese engravers of any century, and produced an enormous oeuvre (Soares, @História da gravura artística em Portugal II, 439-90). The other two plates, showing instruments used in ophthalmology, are unsigned.---- Innocêncio IV, 91; XII, 95: referring to an edition of 1783 that is almost certainly a ghost; no other bibliography refers to it. Becker 323. Lisbon, Faculdade de Medicina, @Catálogo da colecção portuguesa I, 269. Pires de Lima, @Catálogo da Bibliotheca da Escola Medico-Cirurgica do Porto 3627: same collation, but giving the date in error as 1783. Soares, @História da gravura artística em Portugal 1626: noting that the first engraving is often found detached from the book. National Library of Medicine, @Eighteenth-Century STC p. 400. Ferreira de Mira, @História da medicina portuguesa 281, with a reproduction of the first plate (his XXIII). On Santa Anna's translation of Plenck, see Hirschberg, "Uber ein abgeschriebenes Lehrbuch der Augenheilkunde," @Centralblatt für praktische Augenheilkunde 34:2-14 (1910). NUC: MBCo, DNLM.         A Rajah at Prayer] Radjah priant No. 2

[India 1793 - Provenance: Marie Anne Solvyns (1781-1844); sold by Francis Edwards in 1929 to; a Bombay collector; purchased in the mid-1980s by Niall Hobhouse An original watercolour study by Solvyns for his monumental work Les Hindous. "Sometime in 1793, though possibly earlier, Solvyns began work on what was to become his life consuming project, a collection of etchings portraying the Hindus in their costumes, occupations, and cultural life . It was the most ambitious publishing venture yet undertaken in India . For some time, Solvyns had wandered with his sketchbook through Calcutta and its environs, drawing Indians in their occupational pursuits, their festivals, and the rich diversity of their cultural lives. He drew their musical instruments, their boats, their carts, and their modes of smoking. With genuine curiosity and a keenly observant and sympathetic eye, Solvyns recorded an India few Europeans really saw" (Hardgrave). Solvyns, a Flemish artist, had arrived in India in 1790. He first proposed the project in February 1794, but did not complete the work until mid-November 1796. It was a massive project: purchasing and importing the copper plates, producing the thin hand-made paper for the etchings (the paper on which they are mounted being imported from Europe), etching and hand colouring, were all undertaken largely by Solvyns himself. "Indeed it was the most ambitious printing project undertaken in all India to that time" (Hardgrave). By 1803, Solvyns left India in dire financial straits, his publication nearly bankrupting him. After returning to Brussels, and subsequently moving to Paris, Solvyns began a new set of etchings after his original drawings. This reworking and rewriting took years, and it was not until 1808 that the first part of his new edition Les Hindous was published. Over the next four years it was issued in 48 parts with a total of 288 colour-printed plates, all beautifully finished by hand. The final result, of a quality to a more European standard than the Calcutta original, proved to be an influential model for the Company School of Indian artists during the 19th century who produced suites of drawings of occupations for the British serving in India. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a set of 248 original drawings by Solvyns (two images short of the complete Calcutta edition) believed to have been prepared by Solvyns for presentation. "For at least some of the subjects, Solvyns did more than one copy of the watercolor in preparation for the etchings, for in addition to the drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum, an album that Solvyn's widow, Marie Anne, presented in 1829 to a friend or patron of her husband contained a number of drawings, at various stages of completion, that were later fully realized in the etchings. The album . contained 41 drawings, some fully complete and watercoloured; others were pencil sketch studies." The present watercolour is from that album. Titled in Solvyn's hand at the top "Radjah priant No. 2" the image was not included in the Calcutta edition, but would appear, reversed as usual (see Hardgrave), in the Paris edition, captioned Rajah Hindoo Prince at his Prayers. Hardgrave writes of this image: "The raja depicted is Ishwar Chandra of Nadia (1747-1802), who, like his grandfather, the famous Maharaja Krishna Chandra Roy, and many of the rajas of Nadia before him, was a Sanskrit scholar and patron of poets and religion. He became raja in 1788 and resided in Krishnagar, then a center of Sanskrit learning, the capital of Nadia and located about 60 miles north of Calcutta on the Hugli river" (Hardgrave, pp. 164-165). Solvyns here depicts the rajah kneeling in prayer on a tiger skin with a pothi (traditional unbound prayer book made of palm leaves) in front of him, with beads (rudraksas) adorning his arms, neck and head and a cloth (gomukha) covering his right arm.         The Trial of Rev. Thomas Fyshe Palmer, Before the Circuit Court of Justiciary, Held at Perth, on the 12th and 13th September, 1792, on an Indictment for Seditious Practices, Taken in Court Short-hand, by Mr. Ramsey, an eminent Short-Hand Writer from

London Edinburgh: Printed for William Skirving by James Robertson; W Berry; R Galloway Glasgow; E Leslie Dundee; G McFarlane Perth; J Ridgeway H D Symonds and Marson & Ramsey London First edition 1793 - 8vo., (octavo), 195 pages, lacking portrait frontispiece? (although I have not yet seen a copy with a frontispiece). Bound in good quality twentieth century half calf, gilt ruled spine in compartments with contrasting morocco title label. A VG+ copy of this rare work in an attractive binding. (Reference: Ferguson, 166). Thomas Fyshe Palmer, the son of a Bedfordshire landowner, was born in August 1747. After being educated at Eton and Queen's College, Cambridge, he became a curate at Leatherhead in Surrey. Palmer came under the influence of the radical preacher, Joseph Priestley. Palmer became dissatisfied with the doctrines of the Church of England and moved to Montrose in Scotland where he joined a group of Unitarians who had opened a chapel in the town. In 1792, Charles Grey, Richard Sheridan, Major John Cartwright, Lord John Russell, and a few other politicians in favour of parliamentary reform established the Friends of the People. Palmer decided to form a similar organisation called Friends of Liberty in Dundee. Government spies attended these meetings and on 12th September 1793 Palmer was arrested and charged with writing a seditious pamphlet, Dundee Address to the Friends of Liberty. The authorities claimed that Palmer was guilty of "writing or printing seditious or inflammatory writing, calculated to produce a spirit of discontent in the minds of the people against the present happy constitution and government of this country, and to rouse them up to acts of outrage and violence". At his trial Palmer was accused of supplying William Skirving of Strathruddle with 100 copies of Dundee Address to the Friends of Liberty for distribution in Scotland. It was also claimed that Palmer had been attending meetings of the Friends of the People. The prosecutor called Palmer "the most determined rebel in Scotland" and suggested that if it were not for "societies calling themselves Friends of the People, there would be no war with France, since the French would never have been so mad as to attack the British nation." Palmer was found guilty and sentenced to seven years transportation. Attempts to stop the men being transported failed and on 2nd May 1794, The Surprise left Portsmouth and began its 13,000 mile journey to Botany Bay. While the ship was at sea, a group of convicts, including Joseph Fyshe Palmer and William Skirving, were accused of being involved in a plot to kill the captain and crew. Later, Palmer wrote a pamphlet accusing Margarot of exposing the plot to the captain. However, an investigation carried out by Francis Place, found that there was no evidence to support Palmer's accusations. As a political prisoner Palmer enjoyed more freedom than other convicts and was allowed to establish a successful business transporting goods to Norfolk Island. Unlike some of the Scottish Martyrs, Palmer appeared to get on well with the military in New South Wales. Palmer's sentence expired in September 1800 and at the beginning of 1801 he sailed for Britain in a captured Spanish ship. After a bad storm the ship was forced to seek refuge at Guam. The island was under the control of the Spanish and the passengers and crew of the ship were taken into captivity.
