Extracts from Colonel Tempelhoffe's History of the Seven Years War:

London, T. Cadell, , 1793. His Remarks on General Lloyd: On the Subsistence of Armies; and on the March of Convoys. Also a Treatise on Winter Posts. To which is added a Narrative of Events at St. Lucie and Gibraltar, and of John Duke of Marlborough's March to the Danube, with the Causes and Consequences of that Measure. 2 volumes, octavo. (218 × 133mm). Contemporary speckled calf, slightly rubbed overall, joints repaired, new labels. 5 folding maps and plans, dispositions in colour to the large folding map of St. Lucia at the rear, tables and Orders of Battle to the text. Light browning, but overall a very good set if a little externally worn. First edition. Tempelhoff was amongst the military thinkers of the Aufklärung who sought a theory of war based on the close study of modern experience rather than "gleaning military science from the histories of ancient Greece and Rome". Tempelhoff's "Prussian counter-history" to Lloyd's Austrian-biased account, "whilst taking issue with Lloyd's interpretation of the war … shared his fundamental outlook on military theory and also accepted his reasoning concerning the line of operations" (Gat, The Origins of Military Thought, p.76). Extracts from Tempelhoff's text are augmented with a translation of Lindenau's Ãœber Winterpostirungen and Lindsay's own observations on St. Lucia and Gibraltar. Lindsay, who served with the 46th regiment in America and the West Indies, died lieutenant-colonel of his regiment in Grenada.

The Botanical Magazine; or, Flower-Garden displayed: in which the most ornamental foreign plants, cultivated in the open ground, the green-house, and the stove, are accurately represented in their natural colours...

London, S. Couchman, 1793-1814. 40 volumes, bound in 20. 8vo (235 x 140mm). With 1684 fine hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary uniform red half morocco, richly gilt spines, marbled sides. An attractive uniformly bound set of the early years of this famous and beautifully illustrated magazine. The magazine has continued publication almost without interruption to the present day and has become a national institute of which Englishmen may justly be proud. It should be noted that the colouring of the earlier volumes, as offered above, is far superior to the later ones. "It is, indeed, the oldest current scientific periodical of its kind with coloured illustrations in the world, and in the beauty of production and high standard of its contributions it can claim a unique place" (Henry II, p. 302). Title pages to volumes 6 to 10 have been discarded by the binder, who got confused as there are 2 volumes, each with a title-page, bound in one. Added to the set the Index to vols. 1-53. The first 5 volumes are in a slightly later (identical) issue as the edition of the first 5 volumes was too low and quickly sold out. William Curtis (1746-1799) was a famous English botanist and is best known for his splendid 'Flora Londinensis' and 'The Botanical magazine'. The noted natural history illustrators, James Sowerby and Sydenham Edwards both found a start with the eminent magazine. The genus Curtisia is named in his honour.//Stafleu & Cowan 1290; Nissen BBI, 2350.

An Enquiry concerning Political Justice and its Influence on General Virtue and Happiness

G.G.J. and J. Robinson, London 1793 - FIRST EDITION of one of the most important political tracts of the 18th century. "The Enquiry was, and remained, the work by which [Godwin] was best known. It was one of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine. Godwin believed that the motives of all human action were subject to reason, that reason taught benevolence, and that therefore all rational creatures could live in harmony without laws and institutions. Believing in the perfectibility of man, he thought that our virtues and vices may be traced to the incidents which make the history of our lives, and if these incidents could be divested of every improper tendency, vice would be extirpated from the world" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 234). The Royal Academy of Arts was founded in December, 1768, with Sir Joshua Reynolds as its first president. Presumably its first exhibition catalogue was issued that year or in 1769; the second was certainly issued in 1770, though extant copies of that exhibition are on paper watermarked "1825." Copies of all early issues are uncommon. For example, ESTC T12724 for 1793 locates copies in the BL, and the National Gallery; Huntington, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Penn State (Pattee).         The Man of the World

London - Printed by J. Bell 1793 - A nice clean copy. Bound in marbled calf leather. Rebacked with the original leather. First edition thus. Presentation copy from John Johnston of the Theatre Royal Covent Garden to Samuel Rogers. Charles Macklin (1690 1797) was an actor and dramatist. He was one of the most distinguished actors of his day, equally in tragedy and comedy. He gained his greatest fame in the role of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. He wrote many plays, including Love a la Mode (1759), The School for Husbands, or The Married Libertine (1761), and The Man of the World (1781). In 1735 Macklin quarrelled with a fellow actor named Hallam and accidentally killed the man by thrusting his cane through Hallam's eye. He was tried for murder, conducted his own defence, and won an acquittal. Samuel Rogers, 1763 1855, was an English banker and poet, during his lifetime one of the most celebrated, although his fame has long since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of these and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources for information about London artistic and literary life, with which he was intimate, and which he used his wealth to support. Rogers held various honorary positions: he was one of the trustees of the National Gallery; and he served on a commission to inquire into the management of the British Museum, and on another for the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament. John Henry Johnstone, 1749 1828, was an actor and singer. As information from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us, Johnstone was originally articled to a Dublin attorney but later moved to London to join the cavalry regiment. After his discharge, he turned to singing and the stage. His first appearance was in Dublin, and remained on the Irish stage for ten years. In 1783 Johnstone went to London, engaged at Covent Garden for three years. Johnstone was enthusiastically received and continued at Covent Garden as a singer and actor until 1803. Then, he moved to Drury Lane, and remained with the company for the remaining seventeen years of his career, accompanying them to the Lyceum between 1809 and 1812. He was welcomed in Dublin in 1803 in genuine Irish roles such as Sir Callaghan O'Brallaghan in Macklin's Love la Mode, and became known as Irish Johnstone for his superiority in Irish parts. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is mild wear to the extremities, including bumping. Internally the pages are clean and bright, with a couple of spots and handling marks only. There is some offsetting fromthe frontis. There is an ink inscription on the title page and front free endpaper. There is a description stuck to the front paste down. Overall the condition is very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Beknopte natuurlijke historie der zoogende dieren. I-III. (Complete).

. Leyden [Leiden], Honkoop and Du Mortier, 1793-1800. Three volumes in three. 8vo. Hand-coloured frontispiece, three title pages, each with hand-coloured engraved vignette, 1,180 [I (1793) vi, 363; II (1796) iv, 363; III (1800) iv, 440] pp., 27 [10; 8; 9 (including one large, double-folded] engraved and hand-coloured plates. Uniform contemporary polished half calf over speckled boards. Spines with burgundy morocco label with gilt title, gilt lines and oval green morocco labels with gilt-patterned borders and volume number. * Extremely rare hand-coloured copy of this very well-illustrated work on mammals (the title translates as "Concise natural history of mammals"), written by the Dutch politician, writer, playwright, translator and zoologist Jan David Pasteur (1753-1804), whose portrait is shown in the frontispiece of volume one. The title page shows two nude children teasing a lion. The author entered Leyden University at the age of 13. He translated several natural history and travel books into Dutch, including James Cook's "A voyage to the Pacific Ocean", Levaillant's "Voyage dans l'Interieur de l'Afrique, par le Cap de Bonne-Esperance", and Faujus de Saint Fond's "Histoire naturelle de la montagne de Saint-Pierre de Maestricht". In the present original work, Pasteur used the Linnaean system and is quite accurate in his descriptions and illustrations. The plates show over 140 mammals, including the orangutan, the quagga, and the Bolognese dog. A large plate of a stranded sperm whale is spectacular. There is only one auction record in the last 35 years. There are only three copies in Dutch libraries (fide Landwehr), not all of them hand-coloured. Landwehr, 156. Neither in the Cat. BM(NH), nor in Nissen ZBI, nor in Casey Wood..

Norwich, Ct. Aug. 16, 1793.. [1]p. Folio. Old fold lines. Later paper strip attached to top of verso. Slight separation at some folds. Minor toning. Docketed on verso. Very good. In a half cloth clamshell case, gilt leather label. The retained copy of a letter written by Samuel Huntington, but entirely in his hand and signed by him. Huntington was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Connecticut, and here writes to Secretary of War Major General Henry Knox, indicating receipt of the terms of neutrality which the United States adopted towards Britain and France, and Connecticut's willingness to abide by those terms. Samuel Huntington was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, served as President of the Continental Congress, and was the third governor of Connecticut, serving for ten years, until his death in 1793. Henry Knox served with distinction during the American Revolution; he was charged with Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware River, and the successful completion of that mission earned him the promotion to brigadier general. He was one of the founding members of the Society of the Cincinnati and was the nation's first Secretary of War. On April 22, 1793, George Washington issued a statement announcing that the United States would maintain a policy of strict neutrality in the conflict between France and Britain, resulting from the French Revolution. This was the first major international conflict facing the newly formed United States, and it involved her ally, France. One of the concerns of the American government was that America not be seen to be interfering in trade - privateering to the hindrance of one side or the other. The assurances on Governor Huntington's part most likely refer to the willingness of Connecticut ship captains to abide by the law of the land and maintain U.S. neutrality. He writes: "Sir, I am on this day favoured with your two letters of the 7th instant containing the rules & regulations which the President of the United States has thought proper to adopt for a uniform line of conduct throughout the several states with respect to the belligerent powers; and also the regulations agreed upon between the general government & the Minister of France. You may be assured, sir, that a strict observance will be paid to the directions and regulations contained in those letters. I have also the satisfaction to inform you, that the inhabitants of this state appear sincerely disposed to observe a just neutrallity [sic] conformably to the tenor of the proclamation which was issued by the President on that subject and have reason to believe that the general sense & sentiment of the citizens of this state will prevent all infractions of the laws of nations as relative to the powers at war." A nice document, referring to early Federal policy, penned by one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.

"200 copies printed, some with the plates in red, others in black. An elegant edition edited by Dr. Nash, the historian of Worcestershire, who has added a variety of entertaining notes" (Lowndes, The The Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature, S. 313).
