[United States Laws - First Congress]:
Philadelphia & New York: Francis Childs and John Swaine, [1791].. Three volumes bound in one. 93,[1]; 228; [3],228-277,[1 blank],[278]- 279pp. Folio. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked in period style, original gilt morocco label preserved. Rubbed. Scattered dampstaining and foxing. Despite defects, overall still very good. The Acts of Congress, from the first three sessions of the first Congress, bound together. Included herein: The second folio edition of the ACTS PASSED AT A CONGRESS..., after the first of 1789, reprinted to go with the session laws with which it is here bound. The first session of Congress met in New York on March 4, 1789, and continued until the end of September. It officially ratified the Constitution and Washington's election as first U.S. president, and passed much of the most basic legislation for the machinery of government, regulating the Customs, Judiciary, Post Office, Mint, and the like. Much time was spent on the Bill of Rights, which appears here, still including twelve amendments (the first two, relating to the numbers in a congressional district and congressional salaries, were later omitted). Needless to say, all of these things make the acts of this session a foundation work in the history of American government. The ACTS PASSED AT THE SECOND SESSION... "contains the Treaties and Conventions ratified with the several countries of Europe, and with the Indian tribes" (Evans). Much more important foundation legislation was passed in this session, including the Census, naturalization law, the copyright bill, the settling of the Distric … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Boydell & Company, [1791-1803]. First Edition. Hardcover. Sporadic and usually very mild foxing to the blank margins of some plates. One engraving has been laid down. The leather is rubbed with some wear, mostly to the spine tips and edges, the front cover being detached but present. Contents very clean and attractive in handsome binding. Large folio (12-1/2" x 16-1/2") bound in publisher's full gilt-decorated red morocco, front cover now detached but present. Illustrated with an engraved title page, two portraits, and 98 full- page copper engravings nearly all of which represent various scenes from plays, including one engraved by William Blake, and are engraved after the major British artists of the day: Reynolds, Romney, Opie, Smirke, Northcote, Westall, etc. The finest illustrations ever created to accompany Shakespeare, here presented in their original large format (the plates were also published as part of a nine-volume folio set of Shakespeare's dramatic works). A difficult title to find intact as most volumes over the years have been broken for their beautiful individual plates which in this volume are quite clean with all tissue guards present.

[United States Laws - First Congress]:
[Philadelphia. 1791].. Small folio broadside. Dbd. Near fine. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. "Approved, March the third, 1791." This rare official printing of a law passed by the third session of the First Congress amends the law passed in the second session creating the District of Columbia. It allows the President to adjust the position of the District along the Potomac, and so set its final position. The law allowed Washington to move the district slightly downstream, so as to include Alexandria and "a convenient part of the Eastern Branch." This had the net effect of including more Virginia land, but the act specifies that all public buildings had to stay on the Maryland side. Signed in print by Speaker of the House Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, John Adams, and George Washington. NAIP and OCLC together record four copies, at the American Antiquarian Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the New York Public Library, and the Library of Congress. EVANS 23869. Paris: Chez Buisson, Imprimeur et Libraire, 1791. First edition. The first English edition appeared in 1792, followed by many editions in numerous languages. 3 vols, 8vo, contemporary tree-calf, red morocco labels, gilt rules and lettering. Folding table. ¶ Inscribed atop title-page of Volume I: "D. Wiglesworth, professor [ . . . . ] / the author & for his excellent Notes on populati[on] / Brissot." Signed in all three volumes "Thomas Wigglesworth / 1792." Signed by Edward Wigglesworth 1818 on the front pastedowns of all three volumes. Jacques Pierre Brissot de Warville (1754-1793) accomplished a lot before perishing beneath the guillotine. A crusading revolutionary and journalist, he published numerous reformist books and articles and spent four months in the Bastille. In 1788 he toured the United States for the anti-slavery cause and as agent for an investment scheme. Back in Paris, he achieved great power--practically controlling French foreign policy--as the leader of the Girondists; but, when the tide turned, he was swept away. In America he toured widely (taking a special interest in the Quakers), dined with James Madison in Philadelphia, and spent three days at Mount Vernon with the Washingtons. Much of his time was spent in and around Boston, and at Harvard he met Edward Wigglesworth (1732-1794), the second Hollis Professor of Divinity, grandson of the poet Michael Wigglesworth (1631-1705) and son of Edward Wigglesworth, the distinguished first Hollis Professor. London: Robinson, 1791. 8vo, pp. (iv), 351. Bound in modern calf, spine gilt over original marble boards. A very nice clean tight copy. Contemporary ownership signature of Dr. Webb on the title-page, a few inked marginal comments as well. Mackintosh was a philosopher born in 1765. In answer to Burke's Reflections on the French Revolution he wrote Vindici' Gallic'....Burke had been answered by Thomas Paine, but Macintosh's reply, taking a less radical ground, and showing much literary and philosophical culture, was the most effective defence of the position of the Whig sympathisers of the revolution." It was partly translated by the Duke of Orleans (later Louis-Philippe). Macintosh's revolutonary ardor was cooled by the events in France and he later became an ardent admirer of Burke. Mackintoch later attacked Godwin and was rewarded by conservative forces with the facilities for his teaching a course in law. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paine, Thomas:
Paris. May 1791.. viii,148pp. Original salmon colored boards, remnants of later spine label. Slightly rubbed, else a fine copy. A lovely copy in contemporary condition of one of the most important editions of Paine's great polemic, RIGHTS OF MAN. This is the first French edition of the book, following the first English publication by about six weeks and reprinting the original text as it appeared in the suppressed first English edition. This edition thus preserves Paine's original language before it was toned down by later British publishers, as well as publishing for the first time a preface written solely for this edition. Paine was moved to write this work in response to Edmund Burke's REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, which describes the destruction of the old order in France and voices fear of the danger of wholesale revolution. Paine replied with RIGHTS OF MAN, in which he "laid down those principles of fundamental human rights which must stand, no matter what excesses are committed to obtain them...[it is] the textbook of radical thought and the clearest of all expositions of the basic principles of democracy" - PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN. Arguably it is Paine's most important work, even more influential, in the end, than COMMON SENSE. The first edition of RIGHTS OF MAN was published by Johnson in London on Feb. 22, 1791, a date chosen to honor the (unwilling) dedicatee, George Washington; however, the publisher, intimidated by government agents, suppressed it on the day of publication, and only a few copies escaped destruction. The next British editions, al … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Didot Jeune, Chez Garnery, 1791. 12mo. Orig. wrappers, all edges uncut. Front wrapper partly mounted. Some tears and lack to back, thus a bit loose. Internally only minor brownspotting. 160 pp. ¶ First pocket-edition of the highly influential French Constitution. The Constitution was first printed in folio the same year as this one, and the 12-mo-edition is the first edition to follow after that in folio. The pocket-edition was probably the first meant for the public. The Constitution of 1791 is the fruit of the labours of the French National Constituent Assembly which sat from the summer of 1789 to September 1791 and included amongst its members some of France's foremost men, including Mirabeau, Sieyès and Condorcet. It is a document of enormous historical and symbolic importance, which owes the sway that it holds over our political unconscious less to the (ill-fated) political order it established than to the will to erect a new political order, of which it was the expression. The constitution itself was only short-lived. Voted on September 3rd, 1791, it was effectively brought to an end on August 10th, 1792, when insurgents from the Paris Commune invaded the Tuileries and suspended the king. The Constitution was - in the words of French historian Francois Furet - an ephemeral work, but one which has not ceased to haunt all the French constitutions that have followed in its wake. Unknown to most, the Constitution of 1791 did not entail a complete break with l'Ancien Régime. In fact, the political order envisaged by the Assembly was a form of constitutional monarchy … [Click Below for Full Description]

La Bastide, Martin de:
Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Didot fils aine, 1791.. [4],70pp. plus colored folding map, 20 x 22 inches. With [4]pp. pamphlet bound in at rear (as is sometimes the case, though not noted by Sabin), being a prospectus for the published edition of Fleurieu's account of Marchand's circumnavigation and voyage to the Northwest Coast. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine richly gilt. Small hole in titlepage, repaired with tissue, a couple instances of very minor light foxing. Manuscript correction to two lines on one page. Near fine, untrimmed. A rare and exceptionally early plan for building a canal across the Isthmus of Darien, thereby connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and containing a fabulous map of the region. From the earliest attempts to find a northwest passage, the desire to find a sea route across the Americas, thereby linking Europe with Asia, had been a long- standing goal. This text is one of the earliest proposals for a water route across Nicaragua, a route that was considered a viable option until the construction of the Panama Canal in the early 20th century. Bastide explains in great detail the feasibility and course of the route, and the great advantages that it would give to France. It would aid trade with French colonies in the Pacific, and on the west coast of the Americas, and with Asia. It would also help the French keep an eye on British and Spanish activities in the Pacific Northwest, as those two nations had just settled many of the controversial issues regarding Nootka Sound. The beautiful large folding map (usually lacking) … [Click Below for Full Description]
