"The Disquisition falls into two main parts: the first two-thirds is a narrative of the commercial contacts India had with the outside world from ancient times to the sixteenth century; the remainder is a long appendix describing Indian culture. The narrative portion documents, gathers, and summarizes familiar but scattered material; the appendix is broadly descriptive and more innovative, following the pattern developed in the descriptive chapters of the History of America… Robertson has been chiefly remembered as a historian. His four published historical works brought him considerable fame and wealth, and they helped establish historical writing as one of the foremost literary genres of Enlightenment Scotland …Although in recent years both Hume and Gibbon have often been conside … [Click Below for Full Description]

Each volume bears the bookplate of Jonathan Boucher (1737-1804), Anglican clergyman, and for a period beginning in 1759, a prominent figure in the colonies and intimate of George Washington. However, his staunch loyalist sympathies caused him to return to England in 1775, where he occupied himself with various matters, including, for fourteen years, an unfinished "Glossary of Archaic and Provincial Words," intended to supplement Johnson's Dictionary. He departed from the usal practice of including physiology with anatomy. The book was very popular in German medical schools, and Meckel considered it Soemmerring's best work. It includes a very full list of what Soemmerring considered his anatomical discoveries." - A work which opened new paths in anatomy and physiology! - "Soemmering's handbook of human anatomy, 'Vom Baue des menschlichen Körpers' was based as far as possible on his own observations and was conceived as a supplement to Haller's 'Primae linae physiologiae', the work was still in use in expanded form a half century later. The foreword to the first edition reveals Soemmering's preoccupation with the use of clear, unmistakable terminology. It also contains an impressive list of his anatomical discoveries, although not all of them have proved to be valid. Among those that are still accepted, two of the most remarkable are the observation that arterial trunks always lie on the bent side of the joints and the discovery that the small part of the trigeminal ner … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tears along folds repaired, bottom margin chipped affecting the last line of the first page, moderate toning. Typed transcript accompanies. He died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. Vienna Artaria e Compagni [PNs 360 and 361] [ca. 1791]. 4 volumes. Folio. Early marbled wrappers. Preserved in a custom-made green cloth folder with slipcase with dark red leather label gilt to spine. [1] (title within decorative border), 2-20; [1] (blank), 2-19; [1] (blank), 2- 17; [1] (blank), 2-17 pp. Engraved. Plate number "360" to pp. 4-7 of first violin part only. Slightly worn and thumbed; inner margin of title guarded just affecting edge of printed border; occasional markings in pencil and crayon.. First Edition, 4th issue of the Prussian Quartets. Haberkamp Text p. 326. BUC p. 709. RISM M6169 (not distinguishing among issues). "The Prussian Quartets, K. 575, 589 and 590, form a group, since they are dedicated to King Friedrich Wilhelm in Berlin, who played the violoncello - or at least they were written with an eye towards such a dedication, for the first edition bears no dedication at all. The royal virtuosity had to be taken into account, and so in almost every movement of the three works the violoncello has a predominant part, while the second violin and viola retreat into the background. The quartets are slightly concertante, and yet they are purest chamber music. Mozart sometimes completely forgets his royal patron - as for instance in the minuet of the last quartet. These are three works that originated under the most dreadful spiritual oppression, and yet they rise to heights of pure felicity." Einstein: Mozart, p. 184.
