Anacreon
Parma: in aedibvs Palatinis [Giambattista Bodoni]: 1791 One of 150 paper copies, according to Brooks. Brooks states that there were also twelve copies on a vellum-like wove paper. The poems, in Greek, are followed by various readings, then commentary in Latin Greek, Roman, and Italic types, printed in upper case throughout. Contemporary Etruscan-style calf with covers and spine decoratively paneled in gilt, sunburst design in center of both covers, gilt black morocco spine label. Red paste-paper endpapers, all edges gilt. . Octavo. 3 " x 5 5/8." . Two small stipple portraits on title-page and dedication. Printed on heavy paper with an "FP" watermark, horizontal chainlines. Text block is 20 mm. thick. Spine a bit rubbed, with some of the gold flaked off. Tip of one endpaper repaired, and a few other minor repairs. Occasional very light foxing, but a beautiful, wide-margined copy, in very good condition. The British Library site shows pictures of several bindings that are very similar to this one, including one of a 1791 Bodoni imprint of The Castle of Otranto with a similar sunburst design in the middle. That book is part of the Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings, and is attributed to Edwards of Halifax. The present binding may be an Edwards of Halifax binding, as well. At the very least, it is in the style of Halifax. (See the British Museum bookbindings site, keyword "Etruscan."). Giani states that there were 200 copies on "vergata ducale" and twelve on another paper. A knowledgeable customer believes that there were fifty copies printed on this thick laid paper … [Click Below for Full Description]

Polak, 4909. MOREAU DE SAINT-MÉRY, Médéric-Louis-Élie (1750-1819)
Paris: Chez M. Moreau de Saint-Méry, M. Ponce, M. Phelipeau, 1791. Folio. (18 3/16 x 12 3/4 inches). 30 engraved maps, plans and plates (8 double- page, 1 hand-coloured in outline). Expertly bound to style in 18th century French blue paper-covered boards, the flat spine with red/brown morocco lettering-piece. A beautiful and rare work on Santo Domingo. According to the title this separately-issued work was published as a companion to Moreau de Saint-Méry's six-volume work Loix et constitutions des colonies françoises de l'Amérique sous le Vent...(Paris: 1784-1790). The plates were engraved under the supervision of Nicolas Ponce (1746-1831) and according to the dates on the maps and plans and the title, the majority of the work was issued between 1785 and 1791, but the turbulent times meant that the publication of the general "Carte de l'Isle de St.Domingue" was delayed until 1796. Furthermore, the "Plan general de la Partie Francoise de Saint-Domingue", listed as plate 17 on the list of plates, was apparently never issued. The work includes 15 sheets of views. The first two large double-page panoramic views of "Cap François" are after originals by Fernand de la Brunière. The majority of the remaining views and scenes of everyday-life on the island are attributed to either Perignon or Ozanne, and include images of "Port au Prince"; "Cap et Môle St Nicolas"; "Cayes"; "port de Nippes"; "port de l'Acul du Petit-Goave"; "rade de Léogane"; "Bombardopolis", "baies de Fort-Saint-Louis" and "de Jacmel". The rare general map was designed by I. Sionis, whilst Phelipeau … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAINE (Thomas)

[Almanach Royal]
Splendid example of Parisian binding, possibly by Dubuisson. 1791. Paris. Veuve d´Houry. In 8vo (194 mm x 122 mm). 1 [blank] + 720 + 2 [blank] + folding map & plate ?A la Teste Noire?; calendar interleaved with blanks. Contemporary red morocco, lavishly gilt, attributed to Pierre-Paul Dubuisson, boards stamped with an elaborate plaque by Dubuisson[?], spine with raised bands, compartments heavily gilt with fleur-de-lis tools and lettered in gilt, inner dentelle, blue silk endpapers, gently rubbed, but generally fine. Foxing spots to a few pages, else perfect. One of the largest Almanachs ever printed, in a fantastic binding. Although not signed, the plaque on boards seems to be that of Dubuisson, it is composed of a mostly floral arrangement, within a gilt fillet, in romantic style; the original silk endpapers are not always preserved. Ticket of Larcher ?A la Teste Noire? pasted in to face title; possibly distributed by Larcher. Gumuchian, 273 (similar to).

Mrs. Mary Cole
London 1791 - Printed for G. Kearsley, 46 Fleet Street. Mrs. Mary Cole - Cook to the Right Hon. Earl of Drogheda. This book has seen the passage of time , but is just about holding together. The recipe section is complete, but unfortunately the complete sections on Brewing and The Family Physician are missing. There is a leather binding which is very worn and although it looks correct for the book it appears to have differing lettering to what is left of the spine. Some loss to top corner of first few pages although most of the text is unaffected. Unfortunately not in the best of order, but a reasonable copy of this very rare volume. 1791.

Burke, Edmund:
London: printed: New York: Re-printed by Hugh Gaine, 1791.. [4],196pp. Octavo. Extracted from bound volume. Some inevitable scattered foxing and tanning, some occasional neat early ink marginalia and commentary, two early ink ownership signatures on title (one crossed through), but a good copy, the fore-edges largely untrimmed. First American edition of Burke's spirited fusillade against the revolutionary fervor across the channel, described by PMM as "one of the most brilliant of all polemics." The second owner was at distinct disagreement with some of the opinions of the first: on page 106, the first owner has written, in part: "This sentence, though too long, is a very fine one...." The second owner has neatly crossed through those comments, and responded simply "fudge." PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 239. TODD 53ff. EVANS 23238. ESTC W36398.

JOHNSTON, William
London, Digested and Published by W. Faden, Geographer to the King, Jan[uar]y 1st, 1791. - Madeira Two engraved charts, on two sheets joined, fine original hand-colour, inset plan of Funchal, first chart with view of Funchal and plan of the road of Funchal. Large and detailed plan of Madeira. The British had particularly strong links with Madeira. The island had been under Portuguese rule since its discovery in 1418 - Portugal being the country with which England had (and still has) its oldest diplomatic alliance - based on the Treaty of Windsor of 1386. This alliance was further strengthened when, in 1662, Charles II married Catherine of Braganza. As a result Englishmen were allowed to settle on the island. Many of the new arrivals would later become involved in the lucrative Madeira port trade. It is likely that William Johnston, the author of the present chart, was involved in the industry, as one William Johnston is recorded as a partner in Newton, Gordon, and Johnston from 1777-1791. The company - now trading as Cossart, Gordon & Co. - was established by Francis Newton in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira wine trade. These strong links were coupled with the island's strategic significance as a principal port of call for the burgeoning transatlantic trade. Attached to the left of the chart is a 'Plan of the Road of Funchal', with detailed soundings, anchorages, and observations made by Thomas Howe in 1762; whose observations were communicated by Alexander Dalrymple to the admiralty. We are aware of only one other recorded example of the charts together joine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vicesimus Knox
London - Rivingtons, Longman, Law et al. 1791. Hardcover. Book, An extensive educational selection of eminent literary authors. With an engraved title page. Vicesimus Knox, 1752-1821, was an English headmaster and writer. Knox's motivation was the education and improvement of a youthful and middling readershipthe man of a liberal profession [and] the mercantile classesotherwise too busy to study classical literature in full (Extracts in Poetry, 1805, vi). As in his own writing, the non-fiction essay and its modern exponents, among them Addison, Johnson, Richard Steele, and Hugh Blair, featured prominently in his selection of prose writers. While not ignoring classical writers, one of Knox's principal aims was to identify and introduce to the canon those elements of modern literature he believed of particular benefit for the commerce of ordinary life. His focus also resulted in a noticeably generous coverage of eighteenth-century women writers -ODNB. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. With a gilt reference number to the spine. The front joint is cracked and the rear joint starting. Internally, firmly bound, with light browning and the occasional spot or mark, prominent to the first and last few pages. The first eight leaves are only partially attached. With a blank label to the front pastedown. Overall: GOOD ONLY. GOOD ONLY.
