Duhamel du Monceau... was inspector general of the marine, and applied his scientific knowledge to the improvement of naval construction. - Scott 266, citing various editions. Along with French, Dutch and German editions, Mungo Murray translated parts of the text into his 1754 and 1765 English works on naval architecture. MONDHARE (Louis Joseph) & JEAN (Pierre).
[Click Below for Full Description]

WILBERFORCE, William
London: J. Phillips, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare 1791 printing of British Parliament's abstract describing the regulations made against slave trade in West Africa. Groups of anti-slavery American colonists were seeking to end slavery both in North American and in England and did so by trying to expose the inhumane treatment and transportation of slaves. Anti-slave advocates were fighting a difficult battle, but none more so than that of economic stimulus. Slavery and slave planters promised to increase economic growth in both American and in Great Britain. Abolitionists were seeking other means, through African trade, other than trading humans claiming that Africa provided a wealth of goods other than slaves. (Austin/Smith). This pamphlet, collected by William Wilberforce, includes these discussions and more - an incredibly rare and early piece of anti-slavery propaganda! [Attributes: First Edition]

Franz. A. SCHRAEMBL (Attivo a Vienna tra 1751-1803)
1791. Carta nautica dell’Europa tratta dall’atlante dello Schraembl. Molto decorativa. This uncommon and interesting Austrian large sea chart of the waters surrounding Europe, is after Carrington Bowles. The European coasts are shown in greaqt detail and the interior of the continent is completely blank. Below the round title cartouche an inset map is placed, titled “Anadoli oder Klein Asien, showing Turkey, Cyprus, the Middel East and Egypt. The sea chart is arrayed with rhumb lines radiating from six compass roses. Some light brown spotting concentrated in the center of Europe. Very good gondition.

Laire, F.X.
Apud viduam et filium P. Harduini Tarbé, Senonis, first edition, 1791. 2 vols, modern buckram, gilt spine-titles, [4], viii, 475, [1) + [4], 464 pp. 1332 incunables and 56 manuscripts. A pioneering catalogue of some 1332 incunabula and 56 manuscripts in the library of the Cardinal Loménie de Brienne, which according to Haebler (Handbuch der Inkunabelkunde, 1925) has a place of ‘permanent importance in the history of the study of incunabula'. Dibdin wrote that "these are scarce and dear volumes.the bibliographer should omit no opportunity of possessing them" (Bibliomania, 1811). The Loménie catalogue details for the first time the characteristics of the early printed book: its composition, signatures, etc., all enumerated and indexed. Loménie de Brienne - sometime Archbishop of Toulouse and Sens and a Minister of Finance of the Ancien Régime - built up a remarkable collection which included four block books, two copies (both on paper) of the Gutenberg Bible, and the Fust and Schöffer 1459 Psalter and Durandus, both on vellum. Imprisoned following the Revolution he was forced to sell the collection, which as the catalogue states was first to be offered en bloc for six months but, finding no single buyer, was then to be offered at auction, which took place from 12 March to 21 April 1792 in Paris. The auction sale was a success with only 58 lots unsold and some 557 being bought by the Bibliotheque du Roi. At the end of Volume II, the catalog has an important apparatus of four indexes: authors, subjects, places, typographers. Formerly in the library of the Athenaeum, with its bo … [Click Below for Full Description]

NORRIS, Robert.
A very rare translation into Swedish of Norris' travels in the West Guinean country Dahomey. Robert Norris (d. 1791) was a slave trader. In February 1772, he visited the court in Dahomey, and provides his readers with curious and horrifying details of a mass execution taking place as part of various "customs" or royal ceremonies. "In 1788, when, owing to the vigorous action of the advocates of abolition, a committee of the privy council was appointed to inquire into the slave question, Norris was delegated to lay before it the views of the Liverpool trade, a circumstance which probably led to the publication of his ... His account of the slave trade is a defence of slavery" (DNB). Additionally, the Swedish translation contains many interesting notes by Samuel Ödman (1750-1829).With embossed library stamp on first endleaf. Some traces on title-page and last leaf of earlier binding. Spine of the boards slightly soiled and the top a bit damaged. A very good copy.Cf. Compact DNB I, p. 1504; Gay 2881; Maggs, Bibliotheca Asiatica et Africana 841..

First state of volume two, with two engraved illustrations, "The Round Robin" at p. 92, and the "facsimiles" of Dr. Johnson's handwriting on p. 588. In near fine condition with light toning, an excellent example of this landmark work. Boswell excelled in insight into human nature and in ability to dramatize a situation... It was a crucial part of Boswell's magic to give significance and vitality to the apparently trivial; it is this trait, together with his notable accuracy and unparalleled completeness of portraiture, that made him... 'the Shakespeare of biographers" (Baugh et al., 1065-66). "One of Western literature's most germinal achievements: unprecedented in its time in its depth of research and its extensive use of private correspondence and recorded conversation..." Cartellieri, Antonio Casimir , deutsch-böhmischer Komponist der Klassik italienischer Herkunft (1772-1807).
o. O. u. J. [10. [Click Below for Full Description]

Williams, John
London: Printed by J. Brown, at the Printing Office... Entered at Stationers Hall, 1791. viii, 82, [6] pp, as issued, with the half title. Untrimmed. The half title has a long, repaired closed tear at the blank lower portion, with no loss. Very Good. Some manuscript notations, and learned printed footnotes.Prince Madog discovered America in the year 1170 and founded a Welsh tribe of Indians west of the Mississippi River. An account of the tribe is given by Cherokee Chief Bowles. At least, so says Williams, whose thesis was evidently so popular that a second edition issued in 1792."The propositions of the learned author in favor of the existence of a tribe of Welsh Indians, are so well sustained by veritable evidence, and yet so positively known to be untrue, that it makes us doubt the value of all ratiocination. He adduces the positive testimony of more than twenty persons who had visited, or spoken with them in that language. Of all the conjectures regarding the origin of the Indians, not one has been fortified by a tithe of the absolute evidence of respectable authorities and witnesses Mr. Williams obtained, and yet not a single scholar has been convinced. If such a cordon of impregnable proofs can be thrown around a totally improbable hypothesis, there will be little we cannot doubt and nothing we may believe" [Field]. FIRST EDITION. Howes W462aa. WILBERFORCE, William
J. Phillips. 1791 1ed William Wilberforce Slavery Abstract Britain AFRICA Colonial SLAVES An incredibly rare 1791 printing of British Parliament’s abstract describing the regulations made against slave trade in West Africa. This pamphlet, collected by William Wilberforce, includes these discussions and more – an incredibly rare and early piece of anti-slavery propaganda! Item number: #8791 Price: $2500 WILBERFORCE, William An abstract of the evidence delivered before a select committee of the House of Commons in the years 1790 and 1791 on the petitioners for the abolition of the slave-trade. Edmund Burke / Joseph Priestley / Thomas Paine
Printed for J. Dodsley / Printed by Thomas Pearson and Sold by, 1791. Full Leather. A collection of three reactions to the French Revolution by English-speaking writers, together in one volume: the Second Issue of Burke's defining Reflections on the Revolution in France; the Second Edition of a response by Joseph Priestley, the chemist, theologian, co-founder of Unitarianism, and political theorist; and the Fifth London Edition of Thomas Paine's monumental Rights of Man, "the textbook of radical thought" (PMM 241). "In the eternal debate between the ideal and the practical, the latter had never had a more powerful or moving advocate, nor one whose own ideals were higher" than Burke. He "expressed in a single work all the reactions of horror and dismay with which the liberal-minded who had hailed its beginning now felt for the French revolutionaries. Paine's 'answer to Mr. Burke's attack' took the argument to a higher level. With a force and clarity unequaled even by Burke, Paine laid down those principles of fundamental human rights which must stand, no matter what excesses are committed to obtain them." (PMM 239; 241). This being the second issue of Burke's Reflections, called by Todd the 'second edition, first impression' (53b). The second edition, first impression was "an unlabeled reprint of approximately 2000 copies [...] Though in part identical with a, this may properly be called a new edition, since it is substantially of a new setting." WILBERFORCE, William
J. Phillips. 1791 1ed William Wilberforce Slavery Abstract Britain AFRICA Colonial SLAVES An incredibly rare 1791 printing of British Parliament’s abstract describing the regulations made against slave trade in West Africa. Holy Bible
Newcastle upon Tyne: M. Brown, at the Bible, in the Flesh-Market, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An important Osterwald English Bible from 1791! This huge, folio Bible comes from the French of Protestant Swiss pastor, Jean Frederic Osterwald who was notable for being highly influential among central European Protestants, so much so that he is often called the leader of a 'second reformation'. He is remembered for his innovative dogmatics, exegeses, liturgies, and hymns, but his most important contribution was his translation of the Bible. His translation was extremely thorough and included aspects many different Bibles, seeking to make the most accurate form of scripture. According to Darlow and Moule, "Osterwald made use of the original Hebrew and Greek, the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and the French hand German version- both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His alterations tend chiefly to modernize the language, but they sometimes also affect the sense." (D&M 3814) This 1791 annotated Holy Bible includes both the Old and New Testaments along with the Apocrypha. And while the exegetical commentary is important, the stunning full-page engravings by Bewick and Beilby make this Bible a truly desirable work.
