Edinburgh: Printed at the Joint Expence of the Glasgow and Edinburgh Societies, instituted for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, 1791. Duodecimo (192 x 110 mm). Uncut in original paper wrappers. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine backing lost, covers spotted, wear to tips, rear cover slightly chipped at foot of joint, sewing loosening, some worming to front cover leading on to initial 9 leaves and map, minor offset from slave ship plate. Overall still a very good, unrestored copy. First Edinburgh edition of the bestselling précis of the Select Committee hearings on the slave trade, perhaps one of the earliest and greatest works of investigative journalism in English; this copy with a pleasing double association of two Scottish Enlightenment intellectuals. First published in London the same year, this work was the first book against slavery that, instead of arguing from the Bible or relying on the rhetorical skills of a Clarkson or Wilberforce, rested its case entirely on a carefully documented series of eyewitness accounts. These shocking accounts were augmented, on a large folding plate, by the famous stark woodcuts of slaves packed below decks. Despite the evidence given, the motion for abolition was defeated that year, and the slave trade was not abolished in the British Empire until 1807. The provenance is highly apposite, with the ownership signatures of Scottish Enlightenment writer James Dunbar (1742-1798) to the verso of the front cover and that of the female laird Elizabeth Rose of Kilravock (1747-1815) to the title page. Madrid: Don Benito Cano, 1791. Small quarto, with a plate and a large folding map of the I. de Chiloe; a fine copy in contemporary Spanish marbled calf, spine gilt with crimson label. An important work, among the earliest post-Cook printings relating to Tahiti, and one of very few early accounts of Spanish activity there in the 1770s. González de Agüeros was head of the Franciscan missionary college of Santa Rosa at Ocapa, in Peru. After his return to Spain, he wrote this history of the Chilean province of Chiloé. It includes a lengthy résumé of the Aguila expedition under Captain Boenechea that came to Tahiti to leave two Franciscan missionaries in 1774, prompted by reports of the recent English voyages in the Pacific. Just two missionary friars were sent and it was ultimately unsuccessful. A later section describes their stay at Santa Cruz de Chatutira in Tautira Bay from January to November 1775. There is also an account of the neighbouring islands and their natural productions. The relevant seciton is entitled Noticias práticas, é individuales de las islas nombradas vulgarmente de Otahiti ó Carolinas situadas en el mar del Sur, ó Pacífico. Although O'Reilly and Reitman - citing Fernandez de Navarrete's Biblioteca maritima española and D. Barros Arana's Historia jeneral de Chile - find fault with González de Agüeros's sources, nonetheless it remains a significant and early work. Most of the material to do with the voyages of the Aguila only appears in nineteenth or twentieth-century books, chiefly Corney's "Quest and Occupation of Tahiti".The book is surprisingly rare on … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Iredell
Laws of the State of North Carolina By James Iredell Published: Printed by Hodge & Wills, Printers to the State of North Carolina, Edenton, 1791. FIRST EDITION. Folio. 712, (xxiv), [2 leaves], 713-732, 20, 19, (2), 8, 20, 45, 15, 27, 20, 8 pages. Bound in early full calf with blind tooling along the edges of the binding. The front and rear hinges appear to have been reinforced with a flexible type of glue. Burgundy spine label is a little chipped and shows some wormholes. The binding is sound. Lacks the front flyleaves; the first leaf is the title page. 20th century pencil notations and an antique shop's label is on the front paste down. Early owner's signature of Isaac Nelson is at the top of the title page, and there is a red stain on the title. The text is browned and foxed with the foxing sometimes heavy. There are also several 19th century inscriptions on the rear flyleaves and in the text, dating from the 1850s as well as during the Civil War. One 1851 inscription on the rear flyleaf notes that this volume was bought (by Steven Hester) at Allen Whicker's auction in Forsyth County in 1850. The initial title page for this work is 1791, but the date on the spine is 1799. This volume also has about 9 separately printed compilations of yearly laws bound in at the rear covering each year from 1792 to 1799. Each section is paginated separately and has renewed printers signatures (A, B, C, etc.). There is a final 8 page index at the very end. Thus, while the initial and main body of the work was 1791, this seems to have been bound together in 1799. A scarce 18th century North … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joseph Butler
Butler Family of Burlington NJ. A FANTASTIC EARLY AMERICAN ESTATE HANDWRITTEN LEATHER LEDGER FROM THE BUTLER FAMILY OF BURLINGTON CO, NJ! THIS INCLUDES DIRECT TIES TO DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE SIGNER ROBERT MORRIS, JOHN ADAMS' SON THOMAS BOYLSTON, GEORGE WASHINGTON'S PHYSICIAN, DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE PRINTER JOHN DUNLAP AND MORE! This ledger was kept by Joseph Butler and Rachel Butler on the death of Rachel's Husband and Joseph's Father, John Butler. It was used to record payouts by the estate. From what I have been able to find out through research John Butler married Rachel Quest Oct 6, 1758 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. John Butler was the son of Richard Butler and was born in New Jersey, possibly in Mansfield Township, Burlington Co, on Aug. 29, 1725 and according to records died in Chesterfield Township in Burlington, May 30th 1789. There are numerous references to Burlington NJ throughout. His family is also mentioned throughout, including his wife Rachel, his children James Butler, Joseph Butler, Samuel Butler, Israel Butler, Shadelock Butler, Rebecca (William) Brooks, and Elizabeth Prickett. The earliest receipt in the ledger is dated Sept 29, 1791, although there are earlier references on a few pinned in receipts. A majority of the receipts date from 1791 - 1792, then 1793 - 1805 it becomes more sparse. Additionally, it appears a family member used the book to record a couple of transactions in 1859-1860 as well. Some of the signers of the receipts include: Thomas Adams (I believe this to be Thomas Boylston Adams, son of Founding Father and 2nd Preside … [Click Below for Full Description]

Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, wide margins, center fold, generally in very good condition. The plate depicts the apparatus that was built in Piazza S. Francesco in Pistoia, in 1791, on the occasion of the feast of St. James, reusing the structures created for the performance of two years earlier. The representation was "The liberation and the triumph of Despina", taken from Niccolò Forteguerri's Ricciardetto. Rare. 545 393mm

[United States Laws - First Congress]
[Philadelphia, 1791. Small folio broadside. Dbd. Contemporary numerical inscription in upper outer corner. Closed tear, measuring approximately 1 1/4 inches, in inner margin, not affecting text; light staining at edges; else very good. Rare official printing of a law passed by the third session of the First Congress, providing "that Andrew Brown, or any other printer, be permitted, under the direction of the Secretary of State, to collate with, and correct by the original rolls, the laws, resolutions, and treaties of the United States, to be by him printed." Andrew Brown (1744-1797) was an Irish-born American printer based in Philadelphia in the 1780s and 1790s. He originally arrived in America in 1773 as a soldier in British Army. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he left the British and joined the American cause, fighting at Lexington and Bunker Hill. After the war, Brown opened a girls' school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and later in Philadelphia. In 1788 he took over the publication of the FEDERAL GAZETTE, which he renamed the PHILADELPHIA GAZETTE in 1793. In January 1797 a massive fire broke out in the GAZETTE offices, above which Brown lived with his family. Despite Brown's efforts to save them, his wife and three children perished, and although Brown himself was rescued by a black servant, he died from his injuries within a month. The contract authorized by the present law resulted in Brown's important 1791 printing of THE LAWS OF CONGRESS..., which included laws of all three sessions of the First Congress, together with the U.S. Constitution, America … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Jackson
Printed for J. Murray, 1791. Condition: Very Good binding. An attractive First Edition copy. Robert Jackson was a British army physician in the late 18th century. This work advocated the use of cold affusion, or the application of cold water, for British soldiers stricken by the tropical fevers of Jamaica. The book also has the historical importance of directly aiding him in securing an appointment as surgeon to the 3rd regiment, or Buffs, when war broke out in 1793. As he was not connected with the College of Physicians of London, he was not formally eligible for the office of army physician, only securing it due to the intervention of the Duke of York. "This personal incident was the beginning of Jackson's resolute opposition to the monopoly of the College of Physicians and to the corrupt administration of the old army medical board, which ended in a new regime in 1810, and in an open career from the lowest to the highest ranks of the army medical service" (DNB X, 542). Jackson is now known as an important military reformer and historical authority on fevers, this work being an important foundation stone for both aspects of his life's work. Contemporary calf binding, with a brown morocco label and gilt rules. Rules rolled in gilt on the edges. Minor loss to the top of the spine, with the beginnings of separation to the top of the front joint. Spots and soiling to the front board. Lacking front and rear endpapers. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Not in Osler. (Dictionary of National Biography X, 542. Garrison-Morton 10111.). [Attributes: First Edition]

Paine, Thomas
Paris, 1791. viii,148pp. Original salmon colored boards, remnants of later spine label. Slightly rubbed, else a fine copy. A lovely copy in contemporary condition of one of the most important editions of Paine's great polemic, RIGHTS OF MAN. This is the first French edition of the book, following the first English publication by about six weeks and reprinting the original text as it appeared in the suppressed first English edition. This edition thus preserves Paine's original language before it was toned down by later British publishers, as well as publishing for the first time a preface written solely for this edition. Paine was moved to write this work in response to Edmund Burke's REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, which describes the destruction of the old order in France and voices fear of the danger of wholesale revolution. Paine replied with RIGHTS OF MAN, in which he "laid down those principles of fundamental human rights which must stand, no matter what excesses are committed to obtain them.[it is] the textbook of radical thought and the clearest of all expositions of the basic principles of democracy" (PMM). Arguably it is Paine's most important work, even more influential, in the end, than COMMON SENSE. The first edition of RIGHTS OF MAN was published by Johnson in London on Feb. 22, 1791, a date chosen to honor the (unwilling) dedicatee, George Washington; however, the publisher, intimidated by government agents, suppressed it on the day of publication, and only a few copies escaped destruction. The next British editions, although heated enough to raise a … [Click Below for Full Description]

1791. iv,113pp. Contemporary blue wrappers. Some light chipping and staining to wrappers. Scattered foxing. Very good. The first Paris edition of COMMON SENSE., translated into French by Antoine G. Griffet de Labaume. The earliest publication of COMMON SENSE. on the Continent, at least in separate form, was an anonymous French translation published at Rotterdam in 1777; this is the next edition in French, and the first published in France. The work was written by Paine in response to the Battle of Lexington in 1775, calling not merely for a revolt against taxation, but demanding independence. Its message was no doubt as inspiring to the revolutionaries of France as it had been in America. GIMBEL CS-64. SABIN 58217. HOWES P17.
