Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. Bewick showed, at a very early age, a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 he received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1776 he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A General History of Quadrupeds first appeared in 1790. The Quadrupeds deals with mammals of the whole world, and is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals. It includes bats and seals but does not include whales or dolphins. Bewick was helped by his intimate knowledge of the habits of animals acquired during his constant excursions into the country. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, nota … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOWDICH, Thomas Edward, Sarah BOWDICH LEE (editor), George CUVIER and Alexander VON HUMBOLDT (annotators).
1791. Bradley I, p. 497; Nissen, ZBI, 520. Rare first and only edition in French of an account of a journey to Madeira and Porto Santo, by the British traveller and naturalist Thomas Edward Bowdich (1791-1824), edited and with appendices by his wife Sarah (1791-1856), an outstanding naturalist and traveller in her own right. In 1816-1818, Bowdich had travelled to the West-African Ashanti Kingdom as part of an expedition of the Royal African Company. The resulting publication met with little success in the United Kingdom but more so in France, where Bowdich and his wife befriended Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) and worked on several publications about West Africa and natural history, illustrated by Sarah. The success of these publications enabled the couple to embark upon a second African expedition in 1822. After a stay of several months in Madeira, where they gathered all sorts of botanical, geographical and geological material, they travelled to Gambia. After taking astronomical observations at night, Bowdich caught a cold, developed a fever and died.Penniless and with the botanical specimens collected during the voyage lost in a storm, Sarah Bowdich took it upon herself to edit and publish the gathered material. With the help of several friends, including Cuvier and Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), she prepared Bowdich's notes on Madeira, added illustrations drawn by herself (the 7 plates of fishes foreshadowing her famous book Fresh-water fishes of Great Britain) and prepared additional sections describing the African part of the journey and presenting translations of Ar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wagnitz, H(einrich) B(althasar):
Boswell, James
London: by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791. First edition. Half calf over marbled boards with morocco labels and gilt to spines. Gentle shelfwear to edges of boards and extremities of spines, but overall externally pleasing. Internally a clean, tight set of volumes with small bookseller's ticket to rear pastedowns. Collating: vii, [1], [16], 516; ix-xii, 588; complete with frontis portrait of Johnson in vol. 1, round robin plate and plate of his handwriting in vol. 2. Second state of p. 135 with the corrected spelling of "give" in vol. 1, although both states were available for purchase at book shops on May 16, 1791, the official publication date. Cancels Mm4-Nn1 in vol. 1 and E3, Oo4, Qq3, Zz1 and Eee2 in vol. 2 as called for in Pottle. "Boswell is the first of biographers. He has no second. He has distanced all his competitors so decidedly that it is not worth while to place them" (Macauley). Indeed, drawing on his close and longstanding collaboration with Johnson as well as Johnson's own diary, James Boswell released a book that was a popular success and helped to establish the modern genre of biography. Still considered an important resource on the life and times of the famed memoirist and dictionary compiler, Boswell's Life of Johnson breathes vivid life into one of the most important British figures of the century. "We know of him not as he was known to men of his generation, but as he was known to men whose fathers he might have been...and long after his works may be forgotten, he will be remembered through Boswell's Life" (Macauley).

[Click Below for Full Description]

HERSCHEL, WILLIAM.
1791. London, Peter Elmsly, 1792. 4to. In recent marbled paper wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions". Including title-page of volume. Leaves reinforced in margin. (2), iii-vi, (2), 28 pp. + 1 folded plate. ¶ First edition of Herschel's important paper on his observations of the rings of Saturn. "Saturn exercised a special fascination for Herschel, and between 1789 and 1808 he devoted seven papers and part of an eighth to the planet, its ring, and its satellites.On 19 August 1787 Herschel suspected he had found a sixth and previously unknown satellite, but he was not able to confirm this until 28 August 1789, when his forty-foot telescope came into commission. A few days later he found a seventh satellite. For some months he carefully tracked the satellites, establishing for Mimas and Enceladus periods within seconds of the modern values, and giving evidence to show that Iapetus rotates in its period of revolution.He also made careful observations of the rings, which he believed to be solid. As the earth happened to be in the plane of the ring structure at the time, he compared the thickness of the ring when seen edge-on with the diameter of Jupiter's satellites; and although his estimate exceeds modern values, his method showed that the thickness did not exceed a few hundred miles."
