VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet)
A Buckingham. (Probably Paris, 1791). Full morocco, 8.75 inches tall. A stunning binding by David with gilt raised bands, very finely gilt tooled panels, dentelles and all edges gilt. Gilt triple fillets and floral corner tools frame the boards. Embellished with 43 engraved plates, 21 probably being from the published work and a further 22 explicitly erotic engraved plates. Three sections of verse have been completed in a contemporary hand where left originally blank. Many clandestine editions were printed of this scandalous poem, considered contrary to the moral values of France. In its original French, this is a particularly beautiful example of this heroic poem in 14 songs by Voltaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

VERGILIUS Maro, Publius (70-19 B.C.):
Paris, P. Didot, 1791. Folio [393 x 272 mm]. Half red morocco with gilt spine. IV, 513 pp. With 23 engravings. In good condition. This collection comprises three of Virgil's best known works: the Pastorals – "Bucolics" -, the Georgics and the epic poem Aeneid, with their original Latin text. This is the first edition published in Paris, in 1791, printed in Paris by Pierre Didot in only 100 copies - the present book is copy number 84, as noted on the last page, signed by P. Didot. This is one of the books where Pierre's brother, Fermin, was in the process of developing a new typeface. This book is thus known as one of the first examples of modern typography and book printing. We have found 4 other copies in British Library (2 copies), BnF and Yale University. This particular edition includes all the 22 engraved illustrations, drawn by François Gérard and Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy, and one additional frontispiece-engraving that normally belongs to the 2nd edition (1798) – which was also printed in only 250 copies - and was later bound here. Virgil is known as one of ancient Rome's best poets. Bucolica contains poems with an idyllic view on pastoral life and love, Georgics is a didactic poem on the subject of agriculture, while the Aeneid is an epic poem, modelled after Homer's Illiad and Odyssey, to tell the story of Aeneas, a Roman hero. BOSWELL, James
Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly in the Poultry, 1791. First edition. Two volumes, quarto (295mm x 225mm). Original publisher's blue-grey paper boards, manuscript titles to spine. Uncut. First issue, with "gve" on page 135 of the first volume. All seven cancels present as usual, though lacking the preliminary blank in the second volume. A fine copy of a work rarely encountered in an original state. The boards are worn at the corners, with some soiling to the covers and minor repairs to the joints. Internally the pages are unpressed and uncut. There is a repaired closed tear to the margin of the frontispiece, very minor marginal worming from Mm-Ccc. Housed in custom made fleece-lined chemise and cloth slipcase. Engraved frontispiece of the subject to volume I, engraved 'Round Robin' plate and facsimile of Johnson's handwriting to rear of volume II. The Life Of Johnson was published on 16th May 1791 priced at two guineas and issued in the blue-grey boards of the present copy. Though the first edition comprised 1,750 sets of sheets, copies in the original boards are uncommon and usually feature far more repair than in the present example. The work was an immediate commercial success, and paved the way for modern biography. Even Thomas Macauley, who published a now infamous review of a new edition of Boswell's Life Of Johnson in 1831 that did little for either Boswell's or Johnson's nineteenth century reputation, was forced to admit that "The Life of Johnson is assuredly a great, a very great work.
