PRIESTLEY, Joseph.
[n. p., n. d., but with contemporary manuscript imprint to the half-title: 'À Paris, chez Gargnery, rue Serpente No 17, 1791.']. Two works in one vol., 8vo, pp. 18, [2] contents, 197, [2] publisher's advertisement, [1]; xxii, 227, [1]; light soiling to the half-title of the first work, contemporary ownership stamps to the title pages, candle-wax to pp. 196-7 of the first work, otherwise good copies in contemporary mottled calf, corners slightly bumped; spine gilt decorated with black morocco label, spine ends worn, joints a little rubbed.I. First edition in French of Priestley's response to Edmund Burke's influential manifesto of conservatism, Reflections on the Revolution in France; one of the first of thirty-eight replies made by contemporary authors. The work was well received in revolutionary France, so much so that the National Assembly declared Priestley a citizen in 1792 (an honour he declined). His pro-civil and religious liberty ideas were not as well appreciated in England where a 'patriotic' mob ransacked his home, library and laboratory in the so-called Priestley Riots of 1791. In 1794 he moved to America where he was well regarded by men like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, not least for his scientific work. Crook PS 324.II. First edition in French of Paine's famous polemic, to which the author added a special preface and additional notes. Translated from the original Joseph Johnson edition, the present work conveys Paine's ideas more faithfully than subsequent English editions that were toned down by publishers fearful of prosecution by a government co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Impressions of the cuts are far more satisfactory, there are drastic revisions and many additions in the text, many blocks have been reworked, twelve new figures are added, and the fourteen descriptions of bats make their first appearance" (Roscoe). "Few first books have been published to such unanimous acclaim as the History of Quadrupeds . The three most influential periodicals of the day, the Critical Review, the Analytical Review and the English Review, united in awarding the Quadrupeds full length articles . Europe - Faden, William. (1749 – 1836)
1791. London, W. Faden, 1791. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 65.2 cm x 51.8 cm. Sheet Size: 71.3 cm x 56.6 cm. Original map. Very good+, actually even better condition of this stunning map. Some minor darkening to centre fold. Very slight tear to top edge near center fold. Border with longitudinal and latitudinal information. A richly detailed and very interesting political map of Europe at the end of the 18th Century. Towns, cities, rivers and mountains are all depicted. Beautiful contemporary colouring, with a decorative title cartouche with Classical allusions to science, navigation and war. Triple scale beneath cartouche. The Europe depicted is a continent undergoing much upheaval with a greater wave of turmoil about to break across the region. A much-reduced Kingdom of Poland is about to be partitioned out of existence for a second and third time in 1793 and 1795 by the territorially avaricious Austrians, Prussians and Russians. Sweden still controls Finland, which it will have to cede to the ascendant Russian Empire at the beginning of the 19th Century. The aged Holy Roman Empire is still in place, but its days too are numbered. France, just two years after the violent political turmoil of its Revolution produces its first written constitution in 1791 and National Assembly arrested Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Its borders are erroneously depicted as extending across the north of Italy (under Napoleon, this error would prove to be prophetic). James Boswell [Samuel Johnson]
London: Henry G. Bohn, Covent Garden, 1791. This is an exceptional leather bound near-fine copy of the very famous two volume set of the true first state of the first edition of James Boswell's LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, published by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly in London in 1791, with the Joshua Reynolds 1756 portrait of Samuel Johnson serving as the fronticespiece. As far as whether this copy is the very desirable first state of the first edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, well, first, Volume 2 displays the first-state markings -- p. 585 is numbered 587 and 586 numbered 588. And about the controversial loss of the letter "i" in the word "give" on p. 135, line 10, of Volume One, the "I" is there, which some scholars now give the earlier priority. So I am listing it as the first state of the first edition. And to cap this all off -- the two volumes are absolutely pristine -- with the binding as tight as a drum, the page-edges on both volumes gilt, and the tooling on the spine wonderfully sharp and clear. I have not seen a better copy of this book. The first edition of this book has sold for as much as $20,000. I have inserted a buy-it-now price that is a fraction of this, with any good offer accepted, based on what I paid for this book when I found it. I need to downsize my collection and while I have enjoyed having such greats, it is time to pass them on.

NAPOLEON I.
Valence: July, 1791. The young Napoleon responds with delight to the foundational work of political economy Folio, manuscript in French written in ink, margin traced in red crayon. Approximately 1,500 words in the autograph of Napoleon, clearly legible, 12½ pages on a quire composed of 4 bifolia (traces of glue in the margin of the first page); housed in a black calf folder, black calf box. Some light show-through, portion of inner margin of the first page slightly scuffed, otherwise in excellent condition. Napoleon was in garrison at Valence with the 4th Artillery Regiment from 16 June to 31 August 1791. He used his spare time to read the first volume of the French translation of Smith's Wealth of Nations by the poet Jean-Antoine Roucher (1745-1794), made from the fourth English edition (London, 1786), which had been published in 1790. Napoleon has written at the top of the first page "Cayer -", leaving a space blank for a projected numbering. He has captioned the manuscript in the margin: "Notes diverses. Richesse des nations - Smith traduit par Roucher. Tome 1er. Valence juillet 1791". Smith's biographer remarks: "It is clear from the notes that Napoleon is delighted with Smith's picture of economic life, particularly in relation to wages, price, transport, the concept of a European market, and the division of labour resulting in the mass production of pins ('cela paraît incroyable')" (Ian Ross, "Adam Smith: A Biographical Sketch", in Hiroshi Mizuta & Chuhei Sugiyama (eds.), Adam Smith: International Perspectives (Macmillan, 1993), p. 18. BOELEN, Jacobus.
1791. Rare complete set, with all illustrations, of the first and only edition in the original Dutch, of an account of the circumnavigation of the globe by Jacobus Boelen (1791-1876). He travelled through the Pacific, mainly along the East and West coasts of South America, the Sandwich Islands and China. Although the voyage was undertaken for commercial reasons, the detailed and close observations are of great importance, perhaps more so as special attention is given to economical-political points of view, for instance where and to what extent political and naval support is wanted for commerce. The author also describes all the red tape and paperwork to be done before business can start. The third volume deals mainly with the Sandwich Islands, Canton, Macao and the Philippines. Of special interest is the information on Hawaii (pp. 1-178), including some data on whaling, the way of living, the language etc. With maps of Colombia, Peru, South America (coloured in outline), Hawaii, the river Choo-Keang, Macau, Ou-Moon peninsula, the strait of Ty-Pa. With views of Kealakekua Bay and the quay of Whampoa. The coloured plates show costumes and the packing and weighing of tea. Title-pages foxed, some spots throughout and several restored tears in the plates and maps, a fair copy. Sabin 6116; Tiele, Bibl. 151; Hill, p. 357; Landwehr, coloured plates 244 (2 plates lacking); Judd 23.

Atlante fra i più belli e completi mai pubblicati in Italia nel XVIII secolo, l'opera più famosa dello Zatta. KANT, Immanuel
unknown: Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end." ― Immanuel Kant, Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals Immanuel Kant's first mature work on moral philosophy was, and has been, one of the most influential works in the field of metaphysics. 'Critique of Practical Reason' was the second work in Kant's 'Critique' series and deals with moral philosophy. Kant makes many references to his more notable 'Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals' in this book and argues over theories of free will and 'self-love'. Ultimately, Kant seeks to prove that moral law is the equivalent of freedom.

WEBSTER, Pelatiah (1726-1795)
Printed and Sold by Joseph Crukshank, Philadelphia, 1791. viii, 504pp. Contemporary sheep, red morocco lettering piece Provenance: Benjamin Hazard (presentation inscription on title by Julius Aboyneau) First edition of a scarce early work on American finance: the only collection of essays by influential political economist Pelatiah Webster. The present collection brings together twenty-five works on a range of issues, including the necessity of the Constitution, trade and commerce, taxation, credit, pay for soldiers, and the location of the seat of government. The essays, which appeared in a variety of newspapers and separate publications over the previous fifteen years, are here collected for the first time. Webster (1725-95) produced several important treatises on economic issues during the Revolution and the Confederation periods, and was an ardent advocate of the Constitution. He argued that the Revolution should be funded by taxation instead of loans, and espoused a free trade policy and the reduction of issues of paper money. In the post-war period he was a major proponent of a stronger union, and thus became an early advocate of the Constitution; it was based on this work that Hannis Taylor later claimed that Webster was the true author of the Constitution. The appendix includes monthly scales of appreciation of Continental money during the Revolution. "Collected works of an influential political economist of the period who was often consulted by members of Congress on finance and taxation" (Howes). Though in a number of institutional collections, this group of Webst … [Click Below for Full Description]
