BLACKSTONE, William
London: A. Strahan and W. Woodfall, Law-Printers, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "All presumptive evidence of felony should be admitted cautiously; for the law holds it better that ten guilty persons escape, than that one innocent party suffer." ― William Blackstone [Blackstone's formulation] An incredible, valuable edition of William Blackstone's 'Commentaries on the Laws of England.' According to Lowndes, "Of these Commentaries Sir William Jones observed, 'they are the most correct and beautiful outline that ever was exhibited in any human science.'" The Commentaries are considered the most important pre-Revolution source of common and civil law in the United States. This book is famous for being used as the key to Benedict Arnold's book cipher during the American Revolution. According to the Printing and the Mind of Man: "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history...Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine; nothing but trouble, even danger, was to be expected from contact with it. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He has been accused of playing to the gallery, of flattering the national vice of complacency with existing institutions. The charge is in many respects just; but it is no small achievement to change the whole climate of public opinion...Blackstone … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, Adam
A. Strahan and T. Cadell, London, 1791. Sixth edition of Adam Smith's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Octavo, 3 volumes. Bound in full calf, gilt titles to the spine, morocco spine labels. In near fine condition. An exceptional set of this classic work. Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory.his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange.Labour represents the three essential elements-wages, profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy, Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

There is a bookplate with name (George de Ligne Gregory) on in the inside front board. The ffep is detached and has picked-up the outline of the bookplate and other items that must have been laid in. The first title page reads "OBSERVATIONS ON MODERN GARDENING, ILLUSTRATED BY DESCRIPTIONS" Printed for T. Payne MDCCLXX" There is no other print info stated. I found the author's name (Thomas Whately) on other sites where just that title was listed. This has 257 pages. After that comes the next part of the book. SMITH, ADAM
London: Strahan and Cadell, 1791. SIXTH EDITION of the most important book in the history of economics. One of 2000 sets. The sixth edition is the first to have been published after Smith s death in 1790. The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few worked in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry (ONDB). Smith s Wealth of Nations has been the bible for generations of laissez-faire economists and political philosophers and is the cornerstone book of free-market theory. His individualistic view of political economy is neatly summarized in a famous quotation from the Wealth of Nations: It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interests. We address ourselves, not to their humanity, but to their self-interest. This is a particularly handsome copy in a very well preserved period binding. Provenance: bookplate and signature of James Forbes, 17th Lord Forbes. Three volumes. 8vo. Contemporary calf, morocco labels. A splendid set in a handsome period binding. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Carlile, Robert
1791. Fourth Copy. Full Tree Calf. Very Good. A spectacular manuscript, with watercolors done directly onto pages. As indicated this is the "Fourth Copy", and six copies are known to have been made. Folio, 42.5 by 32.5 cm. 46 watercolored or drawn plates, most full color, and three manuscript title pages -- the primary title page and two internal titles. Frontis exterior view of cathedral, and later, an interior view, referred to below. Following title page for "The Legend of Saint Anthony . . . North Aile", fourteen watercolors. Following "South Aile", 22 watercolors. 10 additional plates subsequent, of which one is full color watercolor, of the interior of the cathedral, eight have partial coloring, and one is of calligraphic lettering. Five of these are of funereal subject matter -- tombs or tombstones. We can not say how many of the six copies have survived. OCLC First Search does report the existence of three incomplete versions (one of the North Aile, one of the South Aile, one without reference to an interior title) but without an institution, and we would infer that these three references are the outgrowth of a single copy which was subsequently broken up and whose existence was reported to OCLC without giving ownership placement. There is a single auction record we could find of another copy from a 1938 auction. No other copies show up on various internet sale sites as of the date of this listing. Condition: joints/hinges cracked. Separation and rubbing by front joint, and rubbing of calf mostly along edges otherwise. The few unmounted tissue gua … [Click Below for Full Description]

NAIRNE, Edward.
Canterbury: Printed by Simmons and Kirby, 1791. 8vo (210 × 120 mm), pp. [iii]-viii, [9]-144; without half-title and errata leaf; slightly dusty, small portion of margin of one leaf torn away with slight loss, a few pens tests/flourishes to head of title and verso of final leaf; contemporary sheep, rather crudely rebacked. First edition. Edward Nairne (c.1742-1799), lawyer and customs official, was supervisor of customs at Sandwich, where he was born. From his light verse he was known as the 'Sandwich Bard'. He died at Sandwich on 5 July 1799, and is not to be confused with his namesake (1726-1806) also with Sandwich origins, who was an instrument maker and natural philosopher. Poems includes 'The Jews Partners and the stolen Pork', 'The Gipsies and the stolen Hog', 'The bartering Jew and the Lace Merchant' and 'Travelling; and an Account of a newly instituted Society of Antiquaries'. Jackson, p. 168; Johnson, p. 647. ESTC locates 8 copies only (BL, King's Inns Dublin, Bodley, Leeds, NYPL, Lilly, Illinois, Otago). Order directly from our website for free shipping worldwide.
