[Click Below for Full Description]

LAVOISIER, Antoine-Laurent de.
Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1791. Octavo (190 × 123 mm). Rebound in brown boards, red morocco spine, spine lettered in gilt, printed on blue paper. A fine copy. First edition, Perrot's edition I, not to be confused with the re-edition of c.1810 using a similar type (Perrot III). "De la richesse territoriale de France, which was printed in 1791 by order of the National Assembly, constitutes an extract from a larger work on which Lavoisier had been engaged since 1784 in an effort to complete and verify an analysis of national income undertaken by Dupont de Nemours. Lavoisier's main argument is that the monetary valuation of national income from different sources leads to double counting; that the only method exempt from such difficulties is that based on an estimate of annual consumption, since exports and imports in France balance one another; and that in estimating consumption allowance must be made for the variation in the budgets of different social classes. Thus he estimated that the annual per capita income of the poorest families is from 60 livres to 70 livres, but he set the value of average per capita income at 110 livres, a figure admittedly similar to that of Quesnay in his Philosophie rurale (1763). It was derived by Lavoisier from a hypothetical budget for a family of five, in which the father's consumption is valued at 250 livres (an amount equal to the soldier's pay in the French army) and the mother's consumption and the aggregate con sumption of the children each at two thirds of the father's. For a population of 25,000,000 he deduced a total consumption inc … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSWELL, James
London: by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791 - 2 volumes, quarto (271 × 212 mm). Contemporary tree calf professionally refurbished at joints and head of spines, richly gilt spines, red and green morocco twin labels. Housed in custom-made brown cloth slipcases. Closed-tear across 2G2 in vol. I, a number of simple marginal marks in pencil. A very good copy. Portrait frontispiece engraved by James Heath after Sir Joshua Reynolds, 2 engraved facsimile plates by H. Shepherd. First edition of the most famous biography in any language. The immense task of compiling the thousands of notes Boswell had recorded on "the great man's talk, habits and opinions" was begun after Johnson's death in 1784. Made up of trifling incidents as well as the significant events in Johnson's life, the work remains a masterpiece of portraiture. "Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic poets, Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of dramatists, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers" (Macaulay). Boswell's reputation was further enhanced by the discovery in the early part of the 20th century of the Boswell Papers, which were stored in the Malahide Castle of Ireland for generations. What resulted from this discovery was the revelation of Boswell as an extraordinary personality in his own right; a far more complex, eccentric genius than the mere recorder of Johnson's conversations. This copy has p. 135, vol. 1, in the corrected state, reading "give". This is not an issue point for the whole book; some copies read "gve", but the corr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Van "Indian Van" Swearingen raised a company of riflemen which at the beginning of the Revolutionary War was attached to the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment Infantry and later transferred to Colonel Daniel Morgan's famous Rifle Corps. He served with distinction, fighting in a succession of battles that culminated with the British surrender at Saratoga where he was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Stillwater. Later exchanged, he returned to command. Following the war, Van Swearington married and settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he served as sheriff for several years before emigrating to Wellsburg, [West] Virginia where he established a fort, traded with Native Americans, acquired substantial property, and became quite wealthy. There, his daughter, Drusilla (Lucy), married the legendary "Indian fighter" Samuel Brady, who had captained a Ranger unit during the Revolution. BLACKSTONE, William.
London T. Cadell 1791 - 4 volumes in 8, 8vo., engraved portrait frontispiece to volume I, folding plate, a few small marginal worm tracks of little note, else very clean, contemporary mottled calf, red lettering pieces and fine 18th century gilt tooling, a little rubbed, one or two small worm tracks to covers, otherwise most handsome. An early edition of The most influential eighteenth century treatise on the common law of England. Blackstone's work is divided into four volumes: on the rights of persons, things, of private wrongs and public wrongs. The exceptional, contemporary bindings of this set make it particularly desirable as well as the distinguished provenance. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
