KANT, Immanuel
unknown: Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end." ― Immanuel Kant, Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals Immanuel Kant's first mature work on moral philosophy was, and has been, one of the most influential works in the field of metaphysics. 'Critique of Practical Reason' was the second work in Kant's 'Critique' series and deals with moral philosophy. Kant makes many references to his more notable 'Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals' in this book and argues over theories of free will and 'self-love'. Ultimately, Kant seeks to prove that moral law is the equivalent of freedom.

WEBSTER, Pelatiah (1726-1795)
Printed and Sold by Joseph Crukshank, Philadelphia, 1791. viii, 504pp. Contemporary sheep, red morocco lettering piece Provenance: Benjamin Hazard (presentation inscription on title by Julius Aboyneau) First edition of a scarce early work on American finance: the only collection of essays by influential political economist Pelatiah Webster. The present collection brings together twenty-five works on a range of issues, including the necessity of the Constitution, trade and commerce, taxation, credit, pay for soldiers, and the location of the seat of government. The essays, which appeared in a variety of newspapers and separate publications over the previous fifteen years, are here collected for the first time. Webster (1725-95) produced several important treatises on economic issues during the Revolution and the Confederation periods, and was an ardent advocate of the Constitution. He argued that the Revolution should be funded by taxation instead of loans, and espoused a free trade policy and the reduction of issues of paper money. In the post-war period he was a major proponent of a stronger union, and thus became an early advocate of the Constitution; it was based on this work that Hannis Taylor later claimed that Webster was the true author of the Constitution. The appendix includes monthly scales of appreciation of Continental money during the Revolution. "Collected works of an influential political economist of the period who was often consulted by members of Congress on finance and taxation" (Howes). Though in a number of institutional collections, this group of Webst … [Click Below for Full Description]

Big wall map, made of four sheets, from the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives - he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Z. Davoli - R. Sanfelici - S. Zanasi ,"Terre di Langobardia", sch. 79.

CAMOES, Luis de
Dublin: Graisberry and Campbell, for John Archer, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Luis de Camões was a 16th-century Portuguese poet best known for his work 'Os Lusiadas'. This poem focuses on Portuguese voyages and discoveries of the 15th- and 16th-centuries. Later editions, particularly English editions, were known to feature critical attacks on Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and many of the economical patterns of Renaissance trade. This 1791 English edition was published in Ireland and translated by William Julius Mickle. And while 18th-century editions of this poem are rare, this example is notably scarce because of the inclusion of an impressive folding map!

Rastrelli, Modesto
Firenze: Grazioli, 1791. Small 4to. 175 x 125 mm (7 x 4 ¾ inches). 99 pp. Illustrated with a hand colored engraving designed by Giuseppe Piattoli and engraved by Vascellini.Later decorated paste paper boards. Very good copy.Rare first edition. Very attractive copy of Rastrelli's poem that satirizes a century's old festival originally organized in Florence by Cosimo I after the restitution of his power in 1537. The poem, followed by historical notes on Cosimo's victory, focuses on the losers in that battle, who were made to ride through the city on the backs of donkeys, and receive the wrath of the population and the humiliation that comes with defeat. The engraving is designed by the noted Florentine painter, Giuseppe Piattoli and is characteristic of his playful manner. This copy from the library of Giannalisa Feltrinelli and like so many Florentine illustrated books is very rare. OCLC lists only one copy in London, NUC adds copies at NYPL, Harvard, and Newberry. In addition to the first edition, Rastrelli's Il Palio proved very successful, with later editions printed in 1824, 1825, and 1831, all of which are rare.

FORSTER, Georg.
Very rare Dutch translation of the greater part of Forster's Ansichten vom Niederrhein, von Brabant, Flandern, Holland, England und Frankreich (1791-1794), an account of his travels through Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, accompanied by the famous Alexander von Humboldt. The account is praised for its literary qualities. The translation was made before the final part of the original German edition appeared, so that it omits the parts dealing with France and England. The versatile German Georg Forster (1754-1794) is best known for his impressive account of James Cook's second voyage around the world in 1778-1780. A water stain at the head of the first four leaves and the wrapper, one leaf with a small corner torn off, some occasional spots and the spines slightly tattered, but otherwise internally in very good condition and wholly untrimmed, with all deckles intact.STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (2 copies); not in Cat. Bewick : Newcastle Upon Tyne 9" by 5.5" x, 483pp SUMMARY The second edition of Thomas Bewick's beautifully illustrated work on the mammals of the world. Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. Bewick showed, at a very early age, a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 he received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1776 he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A General History of Quadrupeds first appeared in 1790. The Quadrupeds deals with mammals of the whole world, and is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals. It includes bats and seals but does not include whales or dolphins. Bewick was helped by his intimate knowledge of the habits of animals acquired during his constant excursions into the country. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box wood, agains … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSWELL, James
Balwin, Henry, 1791. FIRST EDITION. Large 4to. 2 vols. pp. xii, (16), 516; 588, (2) Engraved frontispiece by J. Heath after Reynolds’ portrait of Johnson. A very fresh, clean and crisp copy with only some spotting and light browning to flyleaves and first and final leaves. Marginal damp staining mostly visible on the back of the frontispiece. Light ink offsetting from frontispiece to title. A long list of ms. owners from the French Huguenot family of the Duvals. A number of handwritten notes, giving the impression that the compiler was present at some of the moments described in the text. Modern red morocco gilt, spine faded, marbled pastedowns. A fine copy. The recognised masterpiece of English biography, the Life of Samuel Johnson is a monument to both its protagonist and its author. Following the death of Johnson and in order to satisfy the enormous demand for Johnson’s anecdotes, this biography made extensive use of dialogues and it was noteworthy for the Boswell’s ability in describing the human characters surrounding Johnson and Johnson’s itself. Although many of the facts reported here are not accurate; and the continuity of its narrative is often interrupted, this book remains a precious source of information about the cultural world of the late eighteenth century. This copy comes from the Duval family, a notable family of French expats who came to London after the persecution against the Protestants of the late seventeenth century. The handwritten notes that could be found in these two volumes would suggest that the compiler of these notes was actually present at s … [Click Below for Full Description]
