NECKER JACQUES
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

ARBOGAST (Louis François Antoine), LORGNA (Antonio Mario)
En prenant le parti de ce dernier et en le radicalisant, Arbogast remporte le prix dans l'Assemblée du 29 novembre 1790 : « He showed that arbitrary functions may tolerate not only discontinuities in the Eulerian sense of the term, but also "combinations of several portions of different curves or those drawn by the free movement of the hand", that is, discontinuities in the sense afterwards used by Augustin Cauchy » (DSB). PAULINUS a S. Bartholomeo (1748-1806). -
Roma, Fulgonius, 1791. 4to. Original wrappers; spine worn. 32 plates with numerous reproductions of Indian art objects. XII, 326 pp.; an uncut and unopened copy. First edition. Paulinus, i.e. Johann Philip Wesdin, an Austrian missionary and orientalist who spent 15 years in India, was one of the first to remark upon the close relationship between Indian and European languages. He wrote many learned books on the East, including the first European grammar of the Sanskrit language, which were highly valued in their day and have contributed much to the study and knowledge of Indian literature and Indian life. In this work he considers the mythological and religious importance of Indian art objects in the collection of Cardinal Stefano Borgia at Velletri, a town south of Rome. "The Cardinal had an immense collection of antiquities, especially Egyptian and Indian, largely acquired through his office as Secretary of the Congregation of Foreign Missions and financed by the sale of his jewels and yacht. Most of his collection is now in the Museo Borgiano at Rome or the National Museum, Naples." (Grinke, From Wunderkammer to Museum, 37). Brunet IV, 446. Streit VI, 673. 32 tavv. f.t. Brossura originale; esemplare intonso e a fogli chiusi.

Labillardière, Jacques Julien Houton de.
1791. 3 vols. 4to (2 text volumes) and folio (atlas). XVI, 442 pp. 332, 113, (1) pp. Atlas with engr. title page, large folding map (590 x 865 mm) and 43 full-page engr. plates (numbered 2-44), including 14 botanical plates drawn or completed by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Modern mottled half calf, each spine with gold decorated rules and 2 green sheepskin labels, decorated paper sides ("schrottel"/sprinkled pattern over a paste wash), text volumes with sprinkled edges. First edition of Labillardière's famous and finely illustrated narrative, a classic work of travel literature. The mysterious disappearance of the great French explorer Jean François Galaup de La Pérouse led to much speculation in France. On 9 Feb. 1791 the Constituent Assembly passed a decree ordering, among other things, that the King be petitioned to order the fitting out of one or more ships equipped with naturalists, scientists and draughtsmen, with the twofold mission of searching for M. de la Pérouse and of making inquiries relative to the sciences and to commerce. Two ships, La Recherche under the command of Rear-Admiral D'Entrecasteaux and L'Espérence under the command of Captain Kermadec, were fitted out. Proceeding via the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania, they made extensive investigations of its coastline. They also visited New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, the Admiralty Islands, Tonga, New Britain and other groups, making extensive inquiries, but found no trace of the missing navigator (cf. Ferguson). The voyage, however, yielded a vast amount of new and valuable information on Australia's natural hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris 1790. - 'Le Vaillant was born at Paramaribo in Dutch Guiana in 1753, and after being educated in Holland, France, and Germany, proceeded to Paris where he studied the natural history collections, and, full of enthusiasm and ambition, decided to travel into the interior of Africa in order to further his opportunities of gaining information by observing the specimens in their native countries. Making the acquaintance of Mr. Temminck, the Treasurer of the Dutch East India Company, he was enabled to proceed to the Cape in one of the Company's ships called the Held-Woltemaade ... The narrative is characterised by the intelligent and interesting manner in which it is written.' (Mendelssohn pp.889-890). He was one of the first to study the birds in South Africa. 'This work was attacked when published, and some of the incidents related were declared to be either exaggerated or altogether invented.
[Click Below for Full Description]

From 1788 to 1790 he was preoccupi … [Click Below for Full Description]
