London: Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1791 - 3 volumes, octavo (207 x 128 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco labels, spines ruled in gilt with monograms tooled in gilt to third compartments. Extremities rubbed and spines somewhat crackled, joints rubbed and corners a little bruised, boards lightly marked, endpapers browned from turn-ins, contents occasionally foxed and lightly browned with a few creases to corners, overall a very good set. Armorial bookplates of Henry Birkbeck to front pastedowns. Sixth edition, one of 2,000 copies printed, first published in 1776. [PRAYER BOOK] -
Amsterdam, Yohanan Levi Rofe and his son-in-law Baruch, 1791. Octavo (18 x 12 cm); [1], 243, 105, 144 leaves; 19th century red velvet binding with gilt metal ornaments, clasps and gilt edges, housed in an inscribed custom made box. Text in Hebrew and Yiddish. One free endpaper is inscribed and one has been removed. A few pages in the book cut close. A copy of the wedding certificate is included in the box. A fine example of elaborately decorated Siddur, containing all year prayers bound together with the book of Pslams and Techinot - special prayers for women. The Siddur was presented as a wedding gift to Blanche Rebecca Adler, the granddaughter of Chief Rabbi of Britain, on the occasion of her marriage to Raphael Hayem Ernst May, July 22nd 1891. Nathan Marcus Adler was the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire between 1845 and 1890. The wedding ceremony was held at the Bayswater Synagogue in the Parish of Paddington, London, and was performed by the bride's uncle, Rabbi Hermann Adler, who became the Chief Rabbi after his brother's retirement and held this post between the years 1891 and 1911. Presenting a bride with a Siddur on the occasion of her marriage was an established custom. The binding and the box of the Siddur were made in 1891 for the occasion. The inscription on the box reads "16 Thamus 5651" - the Hebrew calendar date of Miss Adler's and Mr May's wedding. The prayer-book itself was printed in Amsterdam in 1791 and contains three books with separate title pages (these often appear bound together): Seder HaTephilloth - order of prayers for the whole year according t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[EROTICA] - [BOYER d'ARGENS, Jean-Baptiste, Marquis, attrib.]
Londres [but Paris], 1791. Two volumes bound in one, small 12mo (14 x 8.7 cm). 203 pp., including title and a notice to the bookbinder, with 20 mezzotint plates engraved after Borel; a few pages very lightly printed. Contemporary full calf, spine richly gilt with red and black morocco labels titled in gilt; small repairs to spine. Extremely rare edition of this eighteenth century best seller, with twenty explicit mezzotint plates. A lovely example in a contemporary binding. For a small format book of such provocative nature it is highly unusual to have illustrations in mezzotint, a technique reserved mostly for large illustrated works. Mezzotint plates wear off quickly, meaning that only a couple of hundred copies of this edition was published. With some minor changes in details, the illustrations follow the Cazin edition published in 1785, plates for which were line-engraved. No copy of this rare edition is referenced in international collections; no copies in WorldCat. First published in 1748 and immediately forbidden and destroyed, 'Therese philosophe' became one of the most famous and recognised erotic novels. An anticlerical work, it is based on a case brought by the 18-year old Marie Catherine Cadiere against her Jesuit confessor Jean-Baptiste Girard in 1730-31 and which passionated the France of the Enlightenment. It is so well written that it has been also attributed to Diderot, the editor of the Encyclopédie. The Marquis de Sade confirmed the attribution to Boyer d'Argens and praised the work: 'ouvrage charmant du marquis d'Argens, le seul qui ait montre le but, sa … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Au moment où la France va jouir d'une institution qu'elle a désirée, & qui, ans tous les Pays libres, n'a cessé d'être regardée comme un élément nécessaire de la liberté, il faut chercher à prévenir jusqu'aux inquiétudes que pourroit faire naître dans les esprits le changement prompt & entier qui va s'opérer dans l'administration de la justice criminelle. On a suffisamment discuté les principes ; les exemples font un genre d'autorité plus important encore pour presque tous les hommes. PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista.
1791. Set of 6 etchings. Overall sheet size: 71cm by 49.5cm. Framed and glazed (dim. 83 x 59 cm). Best known for his representations of on the archaeological reconstructions of ruins and the documentation of contemporary Rome, Piranesi also made a fundamental contribution to the development of the decorative arts. The "Vasi" is one of the most important of his works related to his own interests as a restorer and dealer in antiquities, and which had a great influence on interior decoration, and industrial production of ceramics, etc. This was an aspect of Piranesi's work on which he relied more extensively after the death of his major patron, Clement XIII Rezzonico. Many of the plates illustrate objects made of ancient Roman marbles that could be inspected at his Museo in the Palazzo Tomati where his engraving business and his home were both located. The integration of ancient sculptural fragments into his restored objects allowed for flights of fancy that were very influential on younger architects such as Percier and Fontaine, who made there mark as architects for Napoleon. The plates were issued as individual plates from 1768, first appearing in bound form in 1778 as 'Vasi Candelabri Cippi Sarcofagi', probably compiled by Francesco Piranesi following his father's death. This set comprises Vasi antichi di marmo, Vaso inerario, Vasi Signor Corbet and Vasi Carmathen.

Blair, Gilpin, Pope, et al.
London: printed for Rivingtons, Longman, Law, et al., 1791. Hardcover. Good-/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. The condition of these two books would be about very good, but the front board on volume i is separated at the front joint and hanging by a binding thread. Otherwise, they are tight, square and unmarked. They each has a bookplate on the front paste down and show damp stain on the end papers and corners of the boards only. They have 511, 524, relatively bright, clear pages with minimal foxing bound in tan leather with gilt bands and decorations and gilt titles in a red box on the spine. There is some odd numbering in that vol. 1 has 5 books numbered 1 through 5 while vol. 2 has a subtitle of books 3, 4 and 5 and they are numbered as such.

Amiot, Joseph Marie and others.
Paris, Nyon, 1776[-1791]. 4to. 15 vols. Half-titles in vols. I-II and IX-XIV; two engraved portrait frontispieces: Qianlong Emperor (vol. 1) and M. Amiot (vol. 15), 151 (of 158) engraved plates (some folding), maps and tables (lacking 7 plates in vol. 2). Contemp. French mottled calf. Spines gilt. First edition of this monumental survey of Chinese life in the 18th century as witnessed by the Jesuit missionaries. This work by missionaries including Cibot, Bourgeois, Poirot, Ko and Yang comprises translations of classic Chinese works of law, maxims and proverbs, as well as essays on Chinese linguistics, current affairs and scientific observation. Volume VII is a reprint of Amiot's "Art militaire des Chinois" (Paris 1772), the first translation into a European language of the ancient Chinese military strategy, while volume XII, the "Vie de Confucius", was more complete and accurate than any previous text on the subject. - Amiot, the main contributor, went to China in 1740 and soon won the confidence of the Qianlong Emperor, remaining for the rest of his life in Beijing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. Fluent in both Chinese and Tartar, his works were amongst the first to bring the philosophy and life of the East to the western world, and his "Dictionnaire tatare-mantchou-français" (Paris 1789) was the first to introduce these languages to Europe. Many of the engravings are based on Chinese designs sent by Amiot to Henri Bertin, minister in charge of Chinese affairs under Louis XVI. - Volumes 16 and 17 were published much later in 1814 and under a different imprint … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. New Testament. English.) WAKEFIELD (Gilbert)
Printed at the Philanthropic Press and sold by J. Deighton 1791 - pp. [ii], 524; [ii], 372; [iv], xxxii, 232, [2, ads], 8vo, contemorary dark blue morocco, single gilt fillets on sides enclosing an inner frame of a dotted line interspersed with larger dots, spines gilt in compartments and lettered direct, gilt edges, very slight wear, armorial bookplate inside front covers of J.B. Winterbotham, signature clipped from free endpaper in each vol., good. An attractive copy of the first edition of Wakefield's translation. Wakefield had, amidst some controvery, moved from the Warrington Academy to the newly established Hackney one, in 1790, but his appointment there lasted but a year. 'After resigning from Hackney College, Wakefield could no longer support himself as a private tutor, and began publishing at an astonishing rate. His translation of the New Testament was published in 1792 [sic] and went through several editions, including one in Cambridge, Massachusetts' (ODNB). As evidence of an already 'astonishing rate' the advertisements at the end list 17 publications by Wakefield available from Deighton's, including An Enquiry into the Expediency and Propriety of Public or Social Worship, 'This day published.' A pencil note on the recto of the rear free endpaper records a cost, noting 'all fine paper', and, perhaps, a note of the cost of binding (these costs in code), the total being £1/5/-.
