Louis XVI - La fuite à Varennes]
Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1791. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

SPEDALIERI NICOLA.
November 13, 1791. Manuscript document signed by Major George M. Bedinger (<I>"GMB"</I>), two pages (one leaf), 7.5" x 8.25", Fort Washington, Northwest Territory, November 13, 1791; a few fold splits, edges frayed, some light staining. An important list of officers and soldiers killed by Miami Indians during St. Clair's disastrous expedition of 1791. The return is for the companies in Major George M. Bedinger's Winchester battalion of sharpshooters. According to Colonel Winthrop Sargent, the Second U. S. Regiment, Butler's and Bedinger's battalions, the artillery and cavalry took the heaviest losses on 4 November (Guthman, March to Massacre, p. 238). The return lists 114 casualties, 50 wounded, and 113 arms lost. Lost from the ranks of officers were two captains, two ensigns, a lieutenant, and an adjutant. The Indians targeted the officers since their distinctive uniforms made them easy targets. Strategically this worked well to Little Turtle's advantage, as the inexperienced troops were left without leadership. Born in 1756, Bedinger moved to Kentucky in 1779 and settled at Boonesborough. He was adjutant in the expedition against Chillicothe (May 1779); a major in the Battle of Blue Licks (1782); and a major in Drake's Regiment (1791). His love of adventure led him to join St. Clair's expedition in 1791. After St. Clair's defeat, Bedinger remained with the army until 1793, commanding the Third Sublegion of the United States Infantry. He served in the State house of representatives of the first legislature of Kentucky in 1792, in the State senate 1800-1801, and was electe … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEMPELEN, WOLFGANG von. - [THE FORERUNNER OF COMPUTERIZED SPEECH]
Wien, Degen, 1791. 8vo. Contemporary paper boards. A bit of wear to extremities and gilt title-label to spine renewed. A stamp to blank verso of title-page ("Herzoglicher Meiningischer Biblothek") and notes to front free end-paper. Very nice, clean, fresh, bright, and crisp. Printed on good paper. (20), 456 pp. + engraved frontispiece-portrait and 26 engraved plates. ¶ Scarce first edition of the work that introduced speech synthesis and presented the world's first speech synthesizer. The book is furthermore a landmark work in linguistics and philology, being also foundational in the science of speech and speech development. <br><br>"Kempelen first discusses in general terms the origins of languages and then considered the mechanisms and physiology of speech generation. Finally, he describes a mechanical device that took him twenty years to build and that can produce speech generation. On the nature of language Kempelen argues that human speech and reason are connected and that they develop together over time and he rejects the theory that all languages come from a single (divine) source. He studies the function of the organs of speech and discovers that the cavities over the larynx play the most important role in acoustic articulation. His machine comprises a pressure chamber for the lungs, a vibrating reed for vocal cords, a leather tube, the shape of which helps to produce different vowel sounds, and constrictions controlled by fingers for generating consonants. For plosive sounds he includes movable lips and a hinged tongue." (Gedeon, Science and Technology in Medicine, … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOWARD, John
J. Johnson, C. Dilly and T. Cadell, London 1791 - Quarto, with 22 engraved plans and views (18 of them folding) and a large folding table; bound without the half-title in contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine banded in gilt, red morocco label; an excellent copy. The second edition, with substantial additions, of Howard's second great book, published posthumously. The additions were made by John Aikin, as instructed by Howard, from his notes, in order to complete his life-work on the study of institutions of detention. This study took place at precisely the period of the transportation system and was of great consequence in beginning a more humane approach to all aspects of imprisonment and detention, from hulks and gaols to convict ships, quarantine stations, mental hospitals and the entire apparatus of transportation in general, including a re-examination of the philosophy behind institutions of secondary punishment.Following the publication of The State of Prisons, in 1785 John Howard began the final phase of his work, journeying for fifteen months throughout western and southern Europe inspecting Lazarettos (which term encompassed mental hospitals as well as quarantine stations and hospitals for the treatment of plague victims or "lazars"). After the first edition of this work appeared in 1789 he set out again for the continent, travelling through the Netherlands, Germany and Poland, but dying of fever in southern Russia, where he was buried.Howard's work as a whole represents a huge leap forward in the development of the public health movement, and had ramifications t … [Click Below for Full Description]
