PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista.
1791. Etching. Overall dimensions: 73.6cm by 55cm, mounted. Best known for his representations of on the archaeological reconstructions of ruins and the documentation of contemporary Rome, Piranesi also made a fundamental contribution to the development of the decorative arts. The "Vasi" is one of the most important of his works related to his own interests as a restorer and dealer in antiquities, and which had a great influence on interior decoration, and industrial production of ceramics, etc. This was an aspect of Piranesi's work on which he relied more extensively after the death of his major patron, Clement XIII Rezzonico. Many of the plates illustrate objects made of ancient Roman marbles that could be inspected at his Museo in the Palazzo Tomati where his engraving business and his home were both located. The integration of ancient sculptural fragments into his restored objects allowed for flights of fancy that were very influential on younger architects such as Percier and Fontaine, who made there mark as architects for Napoleon. The plates were issued as individual plates from 1768, first appearing in bound form in 1778 as 'Vasi Candelabri Cippi Sarcofagi', probably compiled by Francesco Piranesi following his father's death. This set comprises Vasi antichi di marmo, Vaso inerario, Vasi Signor Corbet and Vasi Carmathen.

Chauchard M dis. & S. Dezauche edit.
Bibliografia: Davoli, Sanfelici, Zanasi, p. 174, n° 80; Aliprandi, vol. I, p. 232.

London: T. Cadell 1791 - 8vo., iv + 46 + (2)pp., with the final advertisement leaf, well bound in old-style quarter calf gilt. A fine copy. Goldsmiths 14668. Kress B.2204. Perkins 1586. Rothamsted (p.135) has the rare Edinburgh 1st., also 1791. A valuable paper by Sinclair, at the time Chairman of the Society, reminding the members of the important goals they were aiming at. He acknowledged that much research remained to be done, including studies on the relationship of food and fine wool, the effect of shelter and fleece quality, the contribution of salt to the fineness of the pile, undertaking two shearings a year, and cross breeding. 'It is only by trying every experiment that is likely to be useful, and collecting facts from every quarter, that any system . can be brought to perfection'. Sinclair, as President of a special committee of the Highland Society, had himself been investigating the comparative merits of the wool of different breeds of sheep, and especially of the Shetland flocks. He went further, and inaugurated the British Wool Society at a grand sheep-shearing festival held on 1 July 1791 at Newhalls Inn, Queensferry. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista.
1791. Etching. Overall sheet size: 70cm by 49.5cm.

POLI GIUSEPPE SAVERIO.
Parma, Ex regio typographeio (Bodoni), 1791-1795 - Ex Ducali typographeio (Bodoni) 1826-1827. Tre volumi in-folio; 3 cc., X, 90, 50 pp., 1 c., 74 pp., 1 c., LXXIII pp. - 1 c., pagine da 75 a 264, LXXVI pp. - ritratto, 3 carte, XXIV, 44, XLVIII, 56 pagine. … [Click Below for Full Description]

SINCLAIR, Sir John
Edinburgh Creech -1799, 1791. First edition. 21 volumes, 8vo, 7 engraved plates, 4 folding, engraved map, 4 folding tables, half-titles. (2 folding plates very browned, a little foxing.) Contemporary sprinkled calf, red labels on spine, neat repairs to joints and extremities as required, a very good set. Pioneering work on statistics. "In 1790, as an elder in the general assembly of the Church of Scotland,Sir John Sinclair (1754-1835) launched the idea of a survey of the state of the country, which was to become the twenty-one volumes of the Statistical Account of Scotland. It is a detailed account of the geography, history, economy, and society of every parish. He had gathered the word 'statistical' from Germany on his northern tour. He used it to mean information which was desirable for legislative purposes, though not necessarily numerical in form. 'Statistics', he said, 'should reveal the quantum of happiness in a population', as well as 'the means of further improvement'. He saw the proper function of government as intervention or legislative action to promote welfare and economic growth, and recognized that detailed information was necessary for such intervention to be effective. He was not the first to move towards the collecting of detailed local information. In particular, for Scotland Sir Robert Sibbald had made various county reports; Sir James Steuart had recommended such action. Alexander Webster's Scottish census of 1755 was an interpretation of the same idea, as were Macfarlane's Geographical Collections of the early eighteenth century. There were the various … [Click Below for Full Description]
