HOWARD, John
J. Johnson, C. Dilly and T. Cadell, London 1791 - Quarto, with 22 engraved plans and views (18 of them folding) and a large folding table; bound without the half-title in contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine banded in gilt, red morocco label; an excellent copy. The second edition, with substantial additions, of Howard's second great book, published posthumously. The additions were made by John Aikin, as instructed by Howard, from his notes, in order to complete his life-work on the study of institutions of detention. This study took place at precisely the period of the transportation system and was of great consequence in beginning a more humane approach to all aspects of imprisonment and detention, from hulks and gaols to convict ships, quarantine stations, mental hospitals and the entire apparatus of transportation in general, including a re-examination of the philosophy behind institutions of secondary punishment.Following the publication of The State of Prisons, in 1785 John Howard began the final phase of his work, journeying for fifteen months throughout western and southern Europe inspecting Lazarettos (which term encompassed mental hospitals as well as quarantine stations and hospitals for the treatment of plague victims or "lazars"). After the first edition of this work appeared in 1789 he set out again for the continent, travelling through the Netherlands, Germany and Poland, but dying of fever in southern Russia, where he was buried.Howard's work as a whole represents a huge leap forward in the development of the public health movement, and had ramifications t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chauchard M dis. & S. Dezauche edit.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Giuseppe Giulio Lorenzo Henry (Perpignan 1799 - Torino 1856)
Documento datato Torino, 28 dicembre 1846. 9 pp. in 4› rilegate, in francese. Anon [Philips, John]
Printed for Jacob Tonson 1708, London 1791 - (iv), 89, (1) pp. Contemporary blind-stamped full leather. Raised bands to spine with maroon leather title label. Slight area of damage to front board and along spine joint. Corners rubbed. Ink stamp to front endpaper. Frontis engraving. Two engraved head-pieces. John Philips (1676 - 1709) was a Herefordshire man, a scholar and a poet, who died prematurely as the result of delicate heatlth (ironically from consumption). This, according to Samuel Johnson in 'Lives of the Poets', "his greatest work, the poem upon Cider, in two books; which was received with loud praises, and continued long to be read, as an imitation of Virgil's Georgick, which needed not shun the presence of the original." This is the first edition published in 1708. Johnson goes on to say that "To the poem on Cider, written in imitation of the Georgicks, may be given this peculiar praise, that it is grounded in truth; that the precepts which it contains are exact and just, and that it is therefore at once a book of entertainment and of science. This I was told by Miller, the great gardener and botanist, whose expression was, that 'there were many books written on the same subject in prose, which do not contain so much truth as that poem.' " Bitting tells us that John Philips was a nephew of John Milton, but that can not be true and surely refers to John Phillips (1631-1706). Johnson does tell us that while at Winchester he 'fixed his attention particularly on Milton'. He went on to Christ-Church, Oxford, and is noted mainly for his burlesques. Bitting p. 369. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. This print was published by T. Simpson, in 1791. George Morland (1763-1804) was an English painter of animals and rustic scenes. He was born in London, third son of Henry Robert Morland. His father, artist, engraver and picture restorer. Morland's work in painting is characterised by the simple subjects he painted. He depicted the life he knew from his own experience. Morland worked closely with William and James Ward, and later married their sister Anne. William Ward (1762-1826) was an English engraver. During his lifetime he was appointed engraver to the Duke of York, and associate engraver to the Royal Academy. Lemuel Gulliver [Jonathan Swift]
London: A. Wenman. London, A. Wenman, 1791. Later Edition. A lovely edition of one of the most important taproot texts for modern speculative fiction. The novel is the first book featured in Cawthorn and Moorcock's (but really just Cawthorn's) Fantasy: 100 Best Books. Though not explicitly noted as being the first important text (it's not), it's clear that Cawthorn placed it high in the proceedings [p11]. A stunning work of imagination, bolstered by the deeper satire. Dimensions: 90x135x20mm. Bound in full calf, with delicate gilt work. Marbled edges. A pleasing little volume, rubbed and bumped at the spine tip. Four parts in three volumes, bound as one. Frontispiece to volume one (labelled for volume three, so perhaps there were three frontispieces originally). vi, 7-102,112,110. COPAC records no copies for this book, but two copies located for 1780 edition by the same publisher. [5959, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. Later Edition. 1791.

Aguilera Castro y Sotomayor, José Miguel de.
Felipe de Zúñiga y Ontiveros, 1791. Beristain tells us that Aguilera was a "Natural de Tlayacapa en el arzobispado de México, lector jubilado del Orden de S. Francisco, secretario de la Provincia del Santo Evangelio, notario apostólico, examinador sinodal del obispado de la Puebla, vicario de los monasterios de Santa Isabel y Santa Clara de México, doctor y catedrático del Sutil Escoto en la Real Universidad." This is the first printing of the sermon he gave during the celebrations held in Puebla upon receiving notification of the beatification of Sebastian Aparicio, the notable => early Mexican entrepreneur turned beggar and ascetic. The remarkable engraving of Aparicio was drawn and engraved by Francisco Casanova in 1769 for Jose Manuel Rodríguez's Vida prodigiosa del V. Siervo de Dios Fray Sebastian de Aparicio and seems to have been reengraved for this publication by Ignacio Garcia de las Prietas.

LABILLARDIÈRE, Jacques Julien Houton de.
- Ferguson 307; Kroepelien 697; Nissen, ZBI 2331; Sabin 38420. First edition of Labillardière's famous and finely illustrated narrative, a classic work of travel literature. The mysterious disappearance of the great French explorer Jean François Galaup de La Pérouse, led to much speculation in France. On 9 February 1791 the Constituent Assembly passed a decree ordering, among other things, that the King be petitioned to order the fitting out of one or more ships equipped with naturalists, other scientists and draughtsman, with the two-fold mission of searching for De la Pérouse and of making inquiries relative to the sciences and to commerce. Two ships, under the command of Captain Kermadec, proceeded via the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania, they made extensive investigations of its coastline. They also visited New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, the Admiralty Islands, Tonga, New Britain and other groups, making extensive inquiries, but found no trace of the missing navigator (Ferguson). The voyage, however, yielded a vast amount of new and valuable information on Australia's natural history and the aboriginal people of Tasmania. Each text volume with library stampse. Plates mounted on new stubs, a few plates slightly frayed along the edges, some mostly marginal foxing and occasionally other spots or smudges, more serious in the title-pages and half-titles. Otherwise in very good condition. 4to edition of Labillardière's celebrated voyage in search of La Pérouse, with plates after Redouté.

FIRST FLEET] PHILLIP, Governor Arthur
J. Debrett, London 1791 - Quarto, [ii], 26 pp.; an excellent copy in half morocco over marbled boards by Bayntun of Bath, spine banded and lettered in gilt. One of the rarest of First Fleet books: 'there is keen competition among collectors when a copy turns up' (Wantrup). This was the first public printing of Governor Phillip's letters to the government: reporting on the state and prospects of the new colony in New South Wales, these letters and despatches continued the story of settlement after the events described in Phillip's Voyage? to Botany Bay of 1789.As with many eighteenth-century books, Phillip's Voyage had actually been prepared by an anonymous editor who had access to Phillip's despatches, along with the journals of other commanding officers, Lieutenant Shortland, Lieutenant Watts and Captain Marshall. The published account was so successful that London publishers realised that there was healthy demand for material on the new colony, and when some additional letters were published in a House of Commons paper, the London publisher John Debrett reprinted them in this form. Debrett had published White's Journal in 1790, and was the competitor of John Stockdale, who had published Phillip's Voyage; perhaps Debrett was able to take advantage of his position as the official publisher of the Parliamentary Register to get the jump on his competitor. Although the parliamentary paper appeared a little earlier, most collectors in fact prefer the Debrett edition because the text is printed in much the same grand style as the books of Phillip and White. The following year De … [Click Below for Full Description]
