COLOR PRINTING). LA FONTAINE, [JEAN DE]
Paris: [Printed by] P. Fr. Didot jeune [for] Chez Defer de Maisonneuve, 1791. First Edition with these Illustrations. This is a handsomely color-illustrated version of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, in fine contemporary morocco. La Fontaine (1621-95) is best known for his "Fables," considered one of the masterpieces of French literature, but his retelling of Apuleius' classic story of the obstacles faced by the god of love and his mortal wife is lauded by Britannica for "the lucid elegance of its prose, its skillful blend of delicate feeling and witty banter, and some sly studies of feminine psychology." These same descriptors could apply to the illustrations here by painter Jean Frédéric Schall (1752-1825), which are very much in the tradition of Watteau and Fragonard. Pretty and sentimental but with erotic undercurrents, these depictions of key moments in the tale are much enhanced by the fine color printing, duplicating with exactness the soft, romantic shades of the Rococo masters. As noted in Maggs' "French XVIIIth Century Illustrated Books," copies of this work are infrequently found in contemporary fine bindings because of the turbulent times of its publication, making this copy in Parisian red morocco all the more desirable.. 342 x 252 mm. (13 3/8 x 10"). 163 pp., [1] leaf (ad). First Edition with these Illustrations. FINE CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO, GILT, in the style of Bozerian, covers framed with decorative rolls, smooth spine divided into panels by gilt rules and floral rolls, compartments with central gilt urn surrounded by small tools, lily corne … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. Bewick showed, at a very early age, a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 he received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. United States Laws - First Congress]
Francis Childs and John Swaine, Philadelphia & New York, 1791. Three volumes bound in one. 93,[1]; 228; [3],228-277,[1 blank],[278]-279pp. Folio. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked in period style, original gilt morocco label preserved. Rubbed. Scattered dampstaining and foxing. Overall very good. In a half morocco box. The acts of Congress from the first three sessions of the first Congress, including: The first edition of the ACTS PASSED AT A CONGRESS., recording the work of the First Federal Congress. The first session of Congress met in New York on March 4, 1789 and continued until the end of September. It officially ratified the Constitution and Washington's election as first U.S. president, and passed much of the most basic legislation for the machinery of government, regulating the Customs, Judiciary, Post Office, Mint, and the like. Much time was spent on the Bill of Rights, which appears here, still including twelve amendments (the first two, relating to the numbers in a congressional district and congressional salaries, were later omitted). Needless to say, all of these things make the acts of this session a foundation work in the history of American government. Evans erroneously records two distinct issues of the first ACTS., calling this state a second edition. The North American Imprints Project has now established there is only one folio edition of the Acts, using the same paper stock, and that the only difference between the two states Evans records is in the inclusion of an index (not present with this state). The first edition of the ACTS PASSED AT THE SE … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thus this work, "a code of Laws for the government of the Grand Lodge, and all the Lodges on its dependancy," as well as "an Epitome of ancient history" recounting the story of Freemasonry. How the book came to be written is recounted in IV Gould's Library of Freemasonry, pages 363- 364 [1906].Evans 23727 [main entry]. - THE VERY RARE SECOND EDITION OF 1794 - Taken from 'Raccolta di tutti i viaggi fatti intorno al mondo da diverse nazioni dell'Europa' by Jean Pierre Berenger. The date is changed into 1794 Antonio Zatta's map of New Zealand is not only one of the first to show the results of Cook's voyages, but is also one of the most attractive of the islands. Considerable coastal detail, with reference to the Endeavour's path, and a little and surmised internal detail. The map delineates two islands, tentatively identifying the Southern Island separate. The map shows Cook's tracks around the island, along with the astronomical observations. Nice topographical detail is shown, along with a blend of native and European place names on the islands. The map includes several annotations. The decorative cartouche, in full original colour, shows a native village scene. New Zealand, though discovered by Tasman in 1642, received no further European exploration until the first Pacific voyage of James Cook. Cook sailed the coast of New Zealand for 6 months, proving that it was not part of the Great Southern Continent, as many had believed. Cook visited New … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engaged in the Toulon company of the Garde-marine from the age of 13 and a half on 31 October 1755, he subsequently took part in the campaigns of the Seven Years' War— which ended in 1763— participating in the battles of Mahon, Lagos, and Les Sablettes and rising to brigadier in the gardes de la marine company, and then enseigne de vaisseau. He took part in a one-year sea campaign to test Berthoud's first marine chronometer, in an attempt to beat Britain in the race to find a reliable way to calculate longitude. The chronometers he thus refined with Ferdinand Berthoud for their later experiments were the object of major struggles with the king's horologer, Pierre Le Roy. Finally Claret de Fleurieu and Berthoud were entrusted with the task, setting out on the testing expedition from autu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edward Gibbon
London: A Strahan; T Cadell, 1791. With a frontispiece and two large folding maps to volume I. The first folding map being the Eastern Part of the Roman Empire, the second folding map being the Western. Volumes II - VI are dated 1892 and volumes VII-XII have half-titles as called for in this edition as stated in the ESTC listing for this work. This edition is ESTC no T79691. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire traces the trajectory of Western civilisation from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium and therefore spans a nearly 1500 year period from 98 to 1590 of the Roman Empire. Therefore, Gibbon discusses the history of early Christianity, the Roman State Church as well as the history of Europe. The popularity of this work rests on Gibbon's objectivity and heavy use of primary sources. In the eighteenth century the use of primary sources for historical was very rare which was why his work was extremely popular. His methodology also became a model for later historians. The original first three volumes of this work was published in 1781 with the final three volumes being completed and issued in 1789. These twelve volumes were published two years after his final three volumes and present the contents of all six volumes across twelve octavos. With a further preface to volume VII which is the preface for the initial final three volumes Gibbon had published in 1789. Edward Gibbon wrote many historical works, but is best known for this title. This is due to its quality, the use of primary sources as well as the open criticism of organised rel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Bewick; Ralph Beilby
Newcastle Upon Tyne: S. Hodgson, R. Beilby and T. Bewick, 1791. The second edition is much improved and enlarged from the first. In 1776 he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A General History of Quadrupeds first appeared in 1790. The Quadrupeds deals with mammals of the whole world, and is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals. It includes bats and seals but does not include whales or dolphins. Bewick was helped by his intimate knowledge of the habits of animals acquired during his constant excursions into the country. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box wood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoured by metal engravers. This proved to be far superior, and has been the dominant method used since. Ralph Beilby, 1744-1817, was an English engraver, working chiefly on silver and copper. Beilby became a silversmith, jeweller, and seal-engraver under his father and elder brothers. In addition, he became a copper engraver to meet the demand of the then North England market. In 1767 Thomas Bewick was apprenticed to him. The texts in Bewick's A General History of Quadrupeds (1790) an … [Click Below for Full Description]
