PETITOT, Ennemond Alex.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Church of England
Cambridge: John Archdeacon, Printer to the University, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare printing of the Church of England's 'Book of Common Prayer' printed at Cambridge University in 1791. This popular devotional and supplement to the Bible was a critical part of the early English Church liturgy and doctrine. However, this edition, and others of similar size, are considered quite rare. This edition includes a daily calendar for each month of the year with feast days, martyr days, and prayers. This 1791 edition also includes the book of Psalms collected into English meter by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others.

MALTON, Thomas.
London Malton -1801, 1791. First edition. 2 volumes in 1, folio (42 x 32.5 cm. approx.), iv, 112 pp., 2 engraved calligraphic title-pages, engraved dedication leaf to Prince of Wales with vignette of feathered badge and royal supporters, 100 plates engraved and aquatinted by Malton, later red crushed morocco gilt, spine lightly faded, light spotting to title and early leaves, a few plates lightly spotted, some offsetting from plates to facing leaf, overall an excellent copy of a scarce title. The first great aquatint book on London, with fine delineations of the architectural treasures therein. Copies rarely appear on the market. Proposals were issued in March 1791 to publish the work by subscription in 24 numbers. The first four plates are dated 30 June 1792, as is the engraved dedication to the Prince of Wales. The final plates to appear are dated 1 March 1801. The two engraved calligraphic title-plates (both dated 21 August 1792) are intended to divide the work into two 'volumes' even though the text is printed in continuous register and the pages and plates are numbered in unbroken sequences; here it is bound in one volume as usual. The buildings which most interested Malton are given a greater number of plates - nine to St Paul's cathedral, seven each to Somerset House and Westminster Abbey, four each to the Adelphi and the Royal Exchange, and three to the Bank of England. Many are shown in a steep perspective (which set an example to Turner and Girtin); and his concern to combine topographic accuracy with atmosphere is evident in, for example, his engraving, 'View fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEBSTER, Pelatiah (1726-1795)
Printed and Sold by Joseph Crukshank, Philadelphia, 1791. viii, 504pp. Contemporary sheep, red morocco lettering piece Provenance: Benjamin Hazard (presentation inscription on title by Julius Aboyneau) First edition of a scarce early work on American finance: the only collection of essays by influential political economist Pelatiah Webster. The present collection brings together twenty-five works on a range of issues, including the necessity of the Constitution, trade and commerce, taxation, credit, pay for soldiers, and the location of the seat of government. The essays, which appeared in a variety of newspapers and separate publications over the previous fifteen years, are here collected for the first time. Webster (1725-95) produced several important treatises on economic issues during the Revolution and the Confederation periods, and was an ardent advocate of the Constitution. He argued that the Revolution should be funded by taxation instead of loans, and espoused a free trade policy and the reduction of issues of paper money. In the post-war period he was a major proponent of a stronger union, and thus became an early advocate of the Constitution; it was based on this work that Hannis Taylor later claimed that Webster was the true author of the Constitution. The appendix includes monthly scales of appreciation of Continental money during the Revolution. "Collected works of an influential political economist of the period who was often consulted by members of Congress on finance and taxation" (Howes). Though in a number of institutional collections, this group of Webst … [Click Below for Full Description]

The half title has a long, repaired closed tear at the blank lower portion, with no loss. Very Good. Some manuscript notations, and learned printed footnotes. Prince Madog discovered America in the year 1170 and founded a Welsh tribe of Indians west of the Mississippi River. An account of the tribe is given by Cherokee Chief Bowles. At least, so says Williams, whose thesis was evidently so popular that a second edition issued in 1792. "The propositions of the learned author in favor of the existence of a tribe of Welsh Indians, are so well sustained by veritable evidence, and yet so positively known to be untrue, that it makes us doubt the value of all ratiocination. He adduces the positive testimony of more than twenty persons who had visited, or spoken with them in that language. Of all the conjectures regarding the origin of the Indians, not one has been fortified by a tithe of the absolute evidence of respectable authorities and witnesses Mr. Williams obtained, and yet not a single scholar has been convinced. If such a cordon of impregnable proofs can be thrown around a totally improbable hypothesis, there will be little we cannot doubt and nothing we may believe" [Field]. FIRST EDITION. Howes W462aa. Field 1664. Sabin 104276. ESTC T32773. Brinley Sale 5472. [Attributes: First Edition]

James Boswell [Samuel Johnson]
London: Henry G. Bohn, Covent Garden, 1791. This is an exceptional leather bound near-fine copy of the very famous two volume set of the true first state of the first edition of James Boswell's LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, published by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly in London in 1791, with the Joshua Reynolds 1756 portrait of Samuel Johnson serving as the fronticespiece. As far as whether this copy is the very desirable first state of the first edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, well, first, Volume 2 displays the first-state markings -- p. 585 is numbered 587 and 586 numbered 588. And about the controversial loss of the letter "i" in the word "give" on p. 135, line 10, of Volume One, the "I" is there, which some scholars now give the earlier priority. So I am listing it as the first state of the first edition. And to cap this all off -- the two volumes are absolutely pristine -- with the binding as tight as a drum, the page-edges on both volumes gilt, and the tooling on the spine wonderfully sharp and clear. I have not seen a better copy of this book. The first edition of this book has sold for as much as $20,000. I have inserted a buy-it-now price that is a fraction of this, with any good offer accepted, based on what I paid for this book when I found it. I need to downsize my collection and while I have enjoyed having such greats, it is time to pass them on.
