Jane de St Remy/Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Remy
ont> J Bew : London, 1791 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of this memoir regarding the notorious illegitimate descendant of Henry II of France and thief, who played a key role in the 'Affair of the Diamond Necklace', a significant scandal that contributed to the French Revolution. With a portrait frontispiece to volume I. A very scarce edition of this work, particularly in such a well-restored condition. ESTC No. T142583. Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Remy, the Contesse de la Motte was a descendant of the Valois royal family through an illegitimate son of Henry II. She is best known for her role in duping the Cardinal de Rohan into purchasing a necklace that held the value of 2,000,000 livres for Queen Marie Antoinette, who had no involvement in the plan. Jeanne pretended that she had a good relationship with the Queen and convinced Rohan that he was in private communications with the Queen. Rohan asked Jeanne to arrange a meeting and therefore met a prostitute by the name of Nicole Leguay d'Olivia who posed as the Queen during the meeting. Jeanne told Rohan that Marie Antoinette wished to purchase the necklace but did not want to purchase an expensive item whilst the country was in need and so wished Rohan to be an intermediary. de La Motte's husband, the forger of the letters, posed as a valet of the Queen and collected the necklace, which was then taken to London to be separated and the large diamonds to be sold separately. This work is a biography of the central figure of this scandal, Jane de St Remy and discusses her early life, her role in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ludwig XVI., König von Frankreich (1754-1793)
Paris, 3. XI, 1791. 1 S. Folio.

DARWIN, Erasmus
J. Johnson; J. Jackson, 1791. FIRST EDITION OF BOTH PARTS Complete with frontispiece in both volumes, errata and 18 engraved plates, including engravings by William Blake. Half calf and contemporary marbled boards; some offsetting from the plates, minor browning, otherwise an excellent copy with some leaves unopened. From the library of William H. Murphy Grimshaw with his bookplate on the paste-down and another ownership signature on the second title. First edition of both parts; the second volume was printed prior to the first. The first volume is a far-reaching survey of science and technology with references to evolutionary theory; the second part treats specifically vegetable life. Of major significance to this work, however, is the 300 footnotes and 115 pages of appendices. The book is also treasured for the five William Blakes engravings. Darwin (1731-1802), grandfather to Charles Darwin, was a famed eccentric in an age of unusual men, an inventor, writer, natural historian, and friend (or sometimes enemy) of many great men of his time including Blake, Rousseau and Dr. Johnson.

COLOR PRINTING). LA FONTAINE, [JEAN DE]
Paris: [Printed by] P. Fr. Didot jeune [for] Chez Defer de Maisonneuve, 1791. First Edition with these Illustrations. This is a handsomely color-illustrated version of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, in fine contemporary morocco. La Fontaine (1621-95) is best known for his "Fables," considered one of the masterpieces of French literature, but his retelling of Apuleius' classic story of the obstacles faced by the god of love and his mortal wife is lauded by Britannica for "the lucid elegance of its prose, its skillful blend of delicate feeling and witty banter, and some sly studies of feminine psychology." These same descriptors could apply to the illustrations here by painter Jean Frédéric Schall (1752-1825), which are very much in the tradition of Watteau and Fragonard. Pretty and sentimental but with erotic undercurrents, these depictions of key moments in the tale are much enhanced by the fine color printing, duplicating with exactness the soft, romantic shades of the Rococo masters. As noted in Maggs' "French XVIIIth Century Illustrated Books," copies of this work are infrequently found in contemporary fine bindings because of the turbulent times of its publication, making this copy in Parisian red morocco all the more desirable.. 342 x 252 mm. (13 3/8 x 10"). 163 pp., [1] leaf (ad). First Edition with these Illustrations. [Click Below for Full Description]

Bewick : Newcastle Upon Tyne 9" by 5.5" x, 483pp SUMMARY The second edition of Thomas Bewick's beautifully illustrated work on the mammals of the world. Early Edition,Illustrated,Leather Binding,Scarce Overall Condition: Very Good This book weighs 1.5 KG when packed UK Postage: £ 3.99 US Postage: £ 23.99 EU Postage: £ 18.99 European Postage: £ 19.99 Asia Postage: £ 31.99 Worldwide Postage: £ 32.99 DESCRIPTION The second edition is much improved and enlarged from the first. Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. Bewick showed, at a very early age, a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 he received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1776 he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A General History of Quadrupeds first appeared in 1790. The Quadrupeds deals with mammals of the whole world, and is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals. It includes bats and seals but does not include whales or dolphins. Bewick was helped by his intimate knowledge of the habits of animals acquired during his constant excursions into the country. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box wood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoured by m … [Click Below for Full Description]

United States Laws - First Congress]
Francis Childs and John Swaine, Philadelphia & New York, 1791. Three volumes bound in one. 93,[1]; 228; [3],228-277,[1 blank],[278]-279pp. Folio. Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked in period style, original gilt morocco label preserved. Rubbed. Scattered dampstaining and foxing. Overall very good. In a half morocco box. The acts of Congress from the first three sessions of the first Congress, including: The first edition of the ACTS PASSED AT A CONGRESS., recording the work of the First Federal Congress. The first session of Congress met in New York on March 4, 1789 and continued until the end of September. It officially ratified the Constitution and Washington's election as first U.S. president, and passed much of the most basic legislation for the machinery of government, regulating the Customs, Judiciary, Post Office, Mint, and the like. Much time was spent on the Bill of Rights, which appears here, still including twelve amendments (the first two, relating to the numbers in a congressional district and congressional salaries, were later omitted). Needless to say, all of these things make the acts of this session a foundation work in the history of American government. Evans erroneously records two distinct issues of the first ACTS., calling this state a second edition. The North American Imprints Project has now established there is only one folio edition of the Acts, using the same paper stock, and that the only difference between the two states Evans records is in the inclusion of an index (not present with this state). The first edition of the ACTS PASSED AT THE SE … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Bewick; Ralph Beilby
Newcastle Upon Tyne: S. Hodgson, R. Beilby and T. Bewick, 1791. The second edition is much improved and enlarged from the first. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box wood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoured by metal engravers. This proved to be far superior, and has been the dominant method used since. Ralph Beilby, 1744-1817, was an English engraver, working chiefly on silver and copper. Beilby became a silversmith, jeweller, and seal-engraver under his father and elder brothers. In addition, he became a copper engraver to meet the demand of the then North England market. In 1767 Thomas Bewick was apprenticed to him. The texts in Bewick's A General History of Quadrupeds (1790) an … [Click Below for Full Description]
