Virgil; William Henry Melmoth
Alex. Hogg, London, 1791. Please note that this is a heavy item and will require extra postage.; Brown leather boards; a little scuffed and worn, but generally smooth; gilt decoration and titling still quite bright; light wear to lower part of spine, but binding firmly intact. Marbled boards and pastedowns. Owner's name on f.e.p., in lovely copperplate, dd June 16th, 1792. The book is undated, but the same hand has inked 1791 just below the publisher's name on the title page. The title on the spine says "Dryden's Virgil", but he is in fact merely one of the sources "carefully consulted and attended to" in Melmoth's preparation of the volume - among the others were Warton, Pitt, Spence, Warburton, etc., etc. Engraved frontis. + plates; fold-out map of the Roman world at front. Incidentally, the Directions to the Book-Binder were not followed too closely, as few of the plates were inserted as directed: some earlier hand (possibly the original owner) has carefully noted where each plate actually is, and inked in corrections. Lastly, and fascinatingly, bound in at the rear are two separate sets of closely handwritten quarto pages (about 40 in toto), once again in the most beautiful copperplate, presumably of commentary / notes on the text. ; 4to (9" x 11"); 497 + ads + list of sbscibers. pages [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SMITH, Charlotte.
Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand. 1791. FIRST EDITION. 12mo. Half titles, final ad. leaf vol. IV. Contemp. full sprinkled calf, spines ruled in gilt, red & dark blue morocco labels. Early labels of Althorp, library of the Earls Spencer. A v.g. exceptionally well-preserved copy. ESTC T73501. Summers p.271. Smith's third novel, Celestina, was noticeably less 'gothic' than the two that preceded it, sitting more readily in the genre of 'courtship novel'. It follows the fortune of the titular character, an orphaned girl of minor aristocratic background, and her entrance into society. Much of the action takes place in continental Europe, the Pyrennean scenes providing ample opportunity for the author to showcase her exceptional talent for descriptive writing. The novel proved popular when first published, but Smith's star waned as the century closed, and it was not reprinted until late in the 20th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Mainz: B. Schott [PN 138], [after 1791]. Oblong folio. Quarter black cloth with black paper boards. 1f. (recto title within decorative oval border, verso blank), [1] (blank), 2 (cast list, contents with textual incipits), 3-207, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Text in Italian and German. Binding slightly worn. Slight foxing and offsetting; some creasing; lower edge of final leaf repaired; other minor imperfections. In very good condition overall. First Edition, 7th issue, distinguished by the combined cast/contents page (introduced with the 6th issue). Haberkamp I p. 294. Hirsch IV, 134 (first issue). Fuld p. 371. Hoboken II, 343 (first issue). RISM M4504. An opera buffa in two acts to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, Don Giovanni was first performed in Prague at the National Theatre on October 29, 1787. "Don Giovanni is governed by a single idea, Giovanni's flouting of society in pursuit of sexual pleasure, which binds together a disparate set of ambivalent or comic incidents. The libretto has been unfairly criticized; its episodic nature is a condition of the subject, in which respect it differs from Figaro and Così. Divine retribution appears like an act of God, or a different kind of life-force personified in the statue; what in previous treatments had been comic, perfunctory or merely gruesome, is raised to sublimity by Mozart's music." Brissot also harboured literary ambitions, "which led him to go to London (February–November 1783), where he published literary articles and founded two periodicals, which failed. Returning to France, he was imprisoned in the Bastille for pamphlets against the queen and the government but was released in September 1784. "Inspired by the English antislavery movement, Brissot founded the Society of the Friends of Blacks in February 1788. He left for the United States in May, but, when the Estates-General were convened in France, he returned and launched a newspaper, Le Patriote français (May 1789). Bewick : Newcastle Upon Tyne 9" by 5.5" x, 483pp SUMMARY The second edition of Thomas Bewick's beautifully illustrated work on the mammals of the world. Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. Bewick showed, at a very early age, a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 he received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1776 he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A General History of Quadrupeds first appeared in 1790. The Quadrupeds deals with mammals of the whole world, and is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals. It includes bats and seals but does not include whales or dolphins. Bewick was helped by his intimate knowledge of the habits of animals acquired during his constant excursions into the country. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box wood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoured by m … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAVOISIER (Hahnemann)
[Click Below for Full Description]

This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box wood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoure … [Click Below for Full Description]

Best known for his representations of on the archaeological reconstructions of ruins and the documentation of contemporary Rome, Piranesi also made a fundamental contribution to the development of the decorative arts. The "Vasi" is one of the most important of his works related to his own interests as a restorer and dealer in antiquities, and which had a great influence on interior decoration, and industrial production of ceramics, etc. This was an aspect of Piranesi's work on which he relied more extensively after the death of his major patron, Clement XIII Rezzonico. Many of the plates illustrate objects made of ancient Roman marbles that could be inspected at his Museo in the Palazzo Tomati where his engraving business and his home were both located. The integration of ancient sculptural fragments into his restored objects allowed for flights of fancy that were very influential on younger architects such as Percier and Fontaine, who made there mark as architects for Napoleon. The plates were issued as individual plates from 1768, first appearing in bound form in 1778 as 'Vasi Candelabri Cippi Sarcofagi', probably compiled by Francesco Piranesi following his father's death. This set comprises Vasi antichi di marmo, Vaso inerario, Vasi Signor Corbet and Vasi Carmathen.
