William Robertson
London: A. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1791. First edition, 4to, pp. xii, 364, [12]; 2 large engraved folding maps; recent quarter brown calf over marbled boards, red morocco label on spine; fore margin of one map miscreased. This copy with the ownership signature on the half-title of "C. Wm. Admiral Duff." Encouraged by his friend, Edward Gibbon, Robertson, the leading Scottish historian of his day, undertook this history of ancient India. He concludes with the hope that this account of "the early and high civilization of India, and the wonderful progress of its inhabitants in elegant arts and useful science, may have some influence upon the behavior of Europeans towards that people" (DNB). Erasmus Darwin
1791. Very Good - half calf leather binding, marbled endpapers, no markings, toning on some pages, cover corners are bumped, binding is strong. See pics. The Botanic Garden by Erasmus Darwin 1791, Printed for J. Johnson, London First Edition of Part I; third edition of Part II, containing two more plates than the first edition of 1789. Darwin's first major literary work, and the chief source of his fame during his lifetime. "The Botanic Garden, an annotated scientific poem in Augustan couplets, appeared in two parts, of which the second, The Loves of the Plants (1789), was published before the first, The Economy of Vegetation (1791). Darwin decided to publish the second part of the work first because it was better suited 'to entertain and charm.' The first part of the work is more ambitious than the second, covering all natural philosophy, and embodying many of the researches and inventions of Wedgwood, Watt, Boulton, and others. The design of the totality was, Darwin wrote, 'To enlist Imagination under the banner of Science . . . to induce the ingenious to cultivate the knowledge of botany . . . and recommending to their attention the immortal works of the celebrated Swedish naturalist--Linnaeus'" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The Botanic Garden is also important for the five plates in Vol. I engraved by William Blake: four engravings of the Portland vase, and the "Fertilization of Egypt," after a design by Fuseli. Robert Jackson
London: Printed for J. Murray, 1791. Condition: Very Good binding. An attractive First Edition copy. Robert Jackson was a British army physician in the late 18th century. This work advocated the use of cold affusion, or the application of cold water, for British soldiers stricken by the tropical fevers of Jamaica. The book also has the historical importance of directly aiding him in securing an appointment as surgeon to the 3rd regiment, or Buffs, when war broke out in 1793. As he was not connected with the College of Physicians of London, he was not formally eligible for the office of army physician, only securing it due to the intervention of the Duke of York. "This personal incident was the beginning of Jackson's resolute opposition to the monopoly of the College of Physicians and to the corrupt administration of the old army medical board, which ended in a new regime in 1810, and in an open career from the lowest to the highest ranks of the army medical service" (DNB X, 542). Jackson is now known as an important military reformer and historical authority on fevers, this work being an important foundation stone for both aspects of his life's work. Contemporary calf binding, with a brown morocco label and gilt rules. Rules rolled in gilt on the edges. Minor loss to the top of the spine, with the beginnings of separation to the top of the front joint. Spots and soiling to the front board. Lacking front and rear endpapers. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Not in Osler. (Dictionary of National Biography X, 542. Garrison-Morton 10111.). [Attributes: First Edition]

James Boswell
London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791. First edition, the so-called second state with "give" reading on p. 135 in vol. I, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. xii, [16], 516; [2], 588; engraved portrait frontispiece by Heath after Joshua Reynolds, and with the Round Robin plate, and the plate showing facsimile signatures of Johnson; nice copy in contemporary full calf neatly and pleasingly rebacked sometime in the 20th century, preserving the old red and black morocco labels on spine; all the standard cancels are present, per Pottle. Regarding the "give" (versus "gve") reading, Pottle notes that the "booksellers have given this rather uninteresting 'point' more attention than it deserves." Celebrated for its intimacy and vividness, Boswell's Life of Johnson "is one of the best books in the world. It is assuredly a great, very great work. Homer is not more decidedly the first of the heroic poets, Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of the dramatists, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of the orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers" (Macaulay). Luxemburg -
Kupferstich-Karte von Franz Ludwig Güssefeld bei A.G. Schneider, Nürnberg, datiert 1791, alt grenz- und flächenkoloriert. Ca. 69 x 74 cm. Van der Vekene, Les Cartes Géographiques Du Duché de Luxembourg, 3.33.a. Seltene, von zwei Kupferstichplatten gedruckte Karte. Zeigt das Gebiet zwischen Namur, Schleiden, Remich und Sedan mit Luxemburg im Zentrum. Links unten Titelkartusche, oben links mehrere Meilenzeiger, oben rechts Legenden. Oberhalb des Kartenbildes französischer Titel: "Carte géographique du DUCHÉ de LUXEMBOURG dressée selon la grande Carte des Pays-Bas. de Mr. le Comte de Ferraris & des observations astronomiques, par F.L. Güssefeld, l'an 1791."

James Iredell
1791. Laws of the State of North Carolina By James Iredell Published: Printed by Hodge & Wills, Printers to the State of North Carolina, Edenton, 1791. FIRST EDITION. Folio. 712, (xxiv), [2 leaves], 713-732, 20, 19, (2), 8, 20, 45, 15, 27, 20, 8 pages. Bound in early full calf with blind tooling along the edges of the binding. The front and rear hinges appear to have been reinforced with a flexible type of glue. Burgundy spine label is a little chipped and shows some wormholes. The binding is sound. Lacks the front flyleaves; the first leaf is the title page. 20th century pencil notations and an antique shop's label is on the front paste down. Early owner's signature of Isaac Nelson is at the top of the title page, and there is a red stain on the title. The text is browned and foxed with the foxing sometimes heavy. There are also several 19th century inscriptions on the rear flyleaves and in the text, dating from the 1850s as well as during the Civil War. One 1851 inscription on the rear flyleaf notes that this volume was bought (by Steven Hester) at Allen Whicker's auction in Forsyth County in 1850. The initial title page for this work is 1791, but the date on the spine is 1799. This volume also has about 9 separately printed compilations of yearly laws bound in at the rear covering each year from 1792 to 1799. Each section is paginated separately and has renewed printers signatures (A, B, C, etc.). There is a final 8 page index at the very end. Thus, while the initial and main body of the work was 1791, this seems to have been bound together in 1799. A scarce 18th century … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Boswell, James
James Lackington
London: printed and sold by the author, 1791. First edition, 8vo, pp. xxxii, 344; engraved portrait (slightly offset onto title-p.), woodcut of the branch on p. 285; uncut; contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, spine a little perished and with an early leather repair to the joints; a good, sound copy, with the bookplate of Lee Edmonds Grove. Laid in is a letter addressed to Lackington dated Salisbury, Nov. 16, 1804 from John Malham (1747-1821, miscellaneous writer of arithmetics, navigational texts, and religious stories, among others) who was apparently in arrears with Lackington: "The misfortunes into which I have sometimes fallen in the past have been productive of the most serious evils...at present every resource is totally drained, that I have much difficulty from my own bad health and a young sickly family, to subsist from week to week." He tries to persuade Lackington into accepting "at a fair price...any of my publications, as the Arithmetic or the Sermons. I should wish to balance the account in that way to your satisfaction, - being the only means in my power." Malham goes on optimistically: "I should wish to see your catalogue, to look forward to better days, which yet I hope for.". [Attributes: First Edition]

Jean-Paul Marat
» Jean-Paul Marat, initiation : à Londres en 1774, loge d'Amsterdam La Bien-Aimée *** - - - - - - - - - - [Marat against intellectual fraud] In a compilation of 11 letters on different subjects, Marat attacks what he denounces as imposture on the part of many men of letters and sciences who are contemporary with him. He attacked Lavoisier in these terms: « But Lavoisier, the putative father of all the discoveries that make noise, had to be placed at his head. As he has no ideas of his own, he manages to deal with those of others: but almost never knowing how to appreciate them, he abandons them as lightly as he took them, and change … [Click Below for Full Description]
