French Army
1791. Rare and significant 18th century manuscript book providing a highly technical and detailed study of the use of iron and iron essays in the French army. Executed most likely by an army engineer during the last quarter of the 18th century (the dates 1777 to 1791 appear in the text), it englobes the American and the French Revolution periods. France, one of the world's most powerful nations and America's most important ally, was deeply involved in the American Revolutionary War providing military equipment and technology. The document was surely restricted to a limited number of high-ranking officers since it includes valuable technical military information and also the type, quantity of weaponry, assault artillery, and equipment being employed by the French army. The manuscript contains several tables showing the use of iron for every single component used in the French army and navy of the time such as cannons, cannon carriages, cannon balls, machinery, guns, ammunition, warships, chariots, among others. The tables also integrate inventories, specify the required metal components for the manufacturing of various equipments (including naval), their weight, size, metallurgical assay, and so on. Furthermore, the manuscript presents a detailed study of the use of iron in the army, examples of the historical military application of the various iron alloys, the price of iron, and others. It also refers the name and activities of the iron master working for the army, describes several arsenal manufacturing issues, lists the officers in charge of the arsenal, the quantities o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Glasgow: Printed by David Niven; for J. Duncan, J. & M. Robertson, Dunlop, & Wilson (5 others in Glasgow, 5 in Edinburgh, and one in Leith), 1791. 8 volumes, octavo (187 x 113 mm). Contemporary tree calf, smooth spines divided by paired gilt fillets, red morocco labels, green numbering ovals surrounded by dots, red speckled edges. Spines a little rubbed and furbished, old patch and surface wear to back cover vol. II, a couple of volums chipped at head, nick to label of vol. III, scattered foxing, yet still attractive. Engraved frontispiece to each volume. A rather pretty set of this appealing Glasgow edition, put out by the well-established printing house of David Niven for a conger of Scottish booksellers, with "reprinted illustrations as frontispieces to each volume that had originally been issued in two London publications, the 1747 edition of The Spectator (published by J. and R. Tonson and Somerset Draper) and the 1786 edition of the periodical that James Harrison & Co. had issued in eight volumes. No such multivolume, illustrated reprint of a periodical would be undertaken by a Glasgow printer again" (Jung, p. 105). Uncommon on the open market, ESTC lists eight sets in British and Irish institutional libraries, six in North America, Provenance: contemporary simple engraved book label in each volume of "Robert Bogle, Gilmore Hill"; the powerful Bogle dynasty was established by George Bogle (1700-1784), a Glasgow merchant. "Gilmorehill House [Glasgow] was constructed c. 1802. The mansion was built by the West Indies merchant Robert Bogle Junior. Bogle's estate extended … [Click Below for Full Description]

Presso Riccardo Bancker, 1791. 9 volumi in-8° (185x115mm), pp. XX, 417; 431; 450; 452; 442; 482; 384; 396; 459; bella legatura coeva in piena pergamena con titolo in oro su tassello ai dorsi e unghie. Tagli a spruzzo rossi. A classic account of fur-trading and Indian life, important also for its Chippeway, Algonquin, Mohican, and Shawnee vocabularies. Long came to Canada in 1768, lived for a time on the Caughnawaga mission and fought among the pro-British Indians in the American Revolutionary War. He traveled and traded throughout the Upper Country, above Hudson's Bay and returned penniless to England in 1788. His is a graphic record of Indian life and customs and of conditions in the fur trade during the furious competition of the Montreal traders among themselves and with the Hudson's Bay Company. "Not the pages of a professed Tourist", but the observations of a commercial man: this important book begins with Long's memories of his boyhood arrival in Montreal and early stay at Caughnawaga studying the Indians' language. France
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare pocket-size, first edition of the French Constitution from 1791. This brief Constitution was created after the fall of the Ancien Regime and was one of the most important documents to emerge from the French Revolution. Even though it only served as constitution for 11 months, it is now less-remembered for the order it established and more for what it came out of - the turmoil in Paris. This small September 1791 printing was published just a few weeks after the original folio edition. [Attributes: First Edition]

A naturalist, Vaillant was collecting specimens at Saldanha Bay when his ship was sunk by British warships, under the command of Capt. Johnstone. Having nothing more than his gun, ten ducats and the clothes on his back, Le Vaillant was forced to rely on the kindness of the Dutch fiscal Mr. Boers to whom this book was dedicated. With his help the author returned to the Cape and prepared for his inland expedition, which soon him via Swellenham to Mossel Bay, and then East to Algoa Bay and the Fish River. On his return journey Le Vaillant travelled via the ?Sneuw Bergen? and through the Eastern Cape crossing the Gamka, Buffalo and Touws Rivers before finally reaching Saldanha Bay after some sixteen months. The narrative provides much information on the natural history and the Dutch settlers of the interior of southern Africa and is ?characterised by the intelligent and interesting manner in which it is written, although the rapsodies on the Hottentots must have sounded strange to colonial ears? John Sinclair
William Ceech. The Statistical Account of Scotland Drawn up from the communications of the Ministers of the Different Parishes By Sir John Sinclair 1791 The first (Old) 21 Volumes, Original leather bound. The First (Old) Statistical Account of Scotland[edit] Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster had studied German state surveys and wished to use what he called for the first time these "statistical" methods to measure the quantum of happiness that existed in the nation and find ways of improving this. In this he was a remarkable example of Enlightenmentidealism at work. He stressed the empirical ideal of that age by lauding its anxious attention to the facts and he set about completing the work left unachieved by the previous attempt mentioned above. The results are crucial to an understanding of Scotland on the eve of both the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution. In 1790, Sir John sent structured questionnaires to over 900 parish ministers, covering the whole country. This contained 160 questions in 4 sections, namely Geography and topography Population Agricultural and Industrial production Miscellaneous questions There were follow up questions in Appendices - six new questions in 1790 and four more in 1791. The general response was excellent, though the length and quality of submissions varied greatly, as can be seen by comparing those for two East Lothian parishes: Whittingehame (19 pages with detailed tables) and Stenton (2 pages of minimal information). Since the survey was not complete, Sir John sent out Statistical Missionaries in 1796 . The project was finished b … [Click Below for Full Description]
