[New Hampshire]. Cabot, Sebastian.
"Treat your inferiors with condescension, your equals with benevolence, and your superiors with gratitude and submission" [New Hampshire]. Cabot, Sebastian. [Archive of] Letters from Rev. Sebastian Columbus Cabot, to His Brother, Abel Cabot. 1791-1849. 27 pp. Various sizes. Nineteen autograph letters on seventeen sheets, and one promissory note. Fifteen letters from Sebastian to his brother, Abel, (most before 1798 while Sebastian was at Dartmouth), two to his niece, Fanny, two from his daughter Mary to Abel and to Fanny, and one from his son, Elbridge, to Abel, all originally folded into packets and addressed; early ones with remnants of seals, later ones with postmarks. Sebastian Columbus Cabot (Thompson Ct, 1769-, Enfield, Mass., 1853), the great grandson of George Cabot (1678-1717), studied divinity with Rev. John Smith, 1773 at Hanover, was a 1797 graduate of Dartmouth, preceptor at Moor's 1798-1800, appointed pastor at Pelham (now Prescott, Mass, 1807) but dismissed for ill health shortly thereafter, became a teacher, and settled in Enfield. He was the older brother of Abel (1783-1848), who appeared to remain a farmer, a prosperous one at that, all his life, in Chelsea, Vt. As the older brother, he gives Abel advice: "I could make it convenient to write everyday, it would give me much pleasure, but as our different pursuits require a separation, I shall feel myself happy to contribute to your entertainment and instruction in these silent accents, though it be but once a month or year. It affords me exquisite satisfaction to hear of your steadiness and attention to bus … [Click Below for Full Description]

WERNER, Abraham Gottlob
1791. xxxx, 256 pp. 8vo, cont. half-sheep & paste-paper boards, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Freiberg: Gerlach, 1791. First edition. This work by Werner, who is known as the father of historical geology, describes his "theory of the origin of ore deposits which would be consistent with his general theory of the origin of the earth's crust. Many of its elements were of lasting value. Werner formulated basic questions about the origin and history of veins and their contents, established criteria for determining the relative age of veins and vein materials, and presented a comparative study of the structure of veins and rock masses.Perhaps the most important contribution of Von den Entstehung der Gänge, however, was that it made the study of vein formation an integral part of historical geology."-D.S.B., XIV, pp. 262-63. First Edition, J. Thane, Rupert Street, Haymarket, 1791. A very good copy. ESTC T146357. 44 etched plates of landscape paintings, and a further 6 plates, each of six portraits of artists, title and text in English and French; 104pp; one of the portrait plates with a crease, a few plates with slight spotting in margins, 4 plates slightly affected by waterstaining in margins. oblong folio, (10 x 13.5in) red morocco gilt extra by Bolton of Knightsbridge, some wear on extremities, a.e.g., An excellent set of landscape prints after Old Masters, which would have provided connoisseurs with images of pictures in Continental collections. Little is know of the fine German engraver J.L.L.C. Zentner [fl. 1780-1804] who was working in Paris in the 1780s, and was in London in the 1790s. This work was issued in parts which explains why some of the plates are dated after the date on title. The ESTC lists only 4 copies in the UK and suggests the text may be by the publisher. CLASSICS]
Impensis J. Burdon, Oxonii [i.e. Oxford], 1791. 98pp, [2]. With a terminal advertisement leaf. First two words of title transliterated from the Greek. Contemporary speckled calf. Rubbed, cracking to spine and partial cracking of joints, with a little chipping to head and foot. Recent armorial bookplate of R. J. Dickinson to FEP, without FFEP, else a remarkably clean and crisp, unpressed copy. A rare, late eighteenth-century edition of a school-book selection of Greek stories and histories made from the works of Aelianus, Polyaenus, Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Maximus Tyrius and Herodotus, by James Upton (1670-1749), English clergyman, educator and classicist. Upton's work was first published in 1701, with a Latin translation. An edition in this format, without the Latin translations and printed, but for the title and advertisements, entirely in Greek, appeared with an Oxford imprint (but printed by Burdon in Winchester) in 1776. Both, perhaps produced for use at Winchester school, given the involvement of Burdon, are very rare; ESTC locates a single copy of the first edition (Oxford) and just two further of this second appearance, (BL and Harvard). 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare first edition of Marsillac's 'Life of William Penn.' This work describes the life and work of the Quaker who is remembered for coming to the United States and helping establish the State of Pennsylvania as well as advocating for religious freedoms. Jean Marsillac, a French Quaker himself, wrote his book on William Penn after he came to America and spent several years with Penn. This book never saw an English printing, and Howes notes only a German printing outside of French. Marsillac based this book on Penn's own writings and includes several important Pennsylvania documents including the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776. He also wrote a detailed description of the city of Philadelphia. [Attributes: First Edition]

French Army
1791. Rare and significant 18th century manuscript book providing a highly technical and detailed study of the use of iron and iron essays in the French army. Executed most likely by an army engineer during the last quarter of the 18th century (the dates 1777 to 1791 appear in the text), it englobes the American and the French Revolution periods. France, one of the world's most powerful nations and America's most important ally, was deeply involved in the American Revolutionary War providing military equipment and technology. The document was surely restricted to a limited number of high-ranking officers since it includes valuable technical military information and also the type, quantity of weaponry, assault artillery, and equipment being employed by the French army. The manuscript contains several tables showing the use of iron for every single component used in the French army and navy of the time such as cannons, cannon carriages, cannon balls, machinery, guns, ammunition, warships, chariots, among others. The tables also integrate inventories, specify the required metal components for the manufacturing of various equipments (including naval), their weight, size, metallurgical assay, and so on. Furthermore, the manuscript presents a detailed study of the use of iron in the army, examples of the historical military application of the various iron alloys, the price of iron, and others. It also refers the name and activities of the iron master working for the army, describes several arsenal manufacturing issues, lists the officers in charge of the arsenal, the quantities o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spines a little rubbed and furbished, old patch and surface wear to back cover vol. II, a couple of volums chipped at head, nick to label of vol. III, scattered foxing, yet still attractive. Engraved frontispiece to each volume. A rather pretty set of this appealing Glasgow edition, put out by the well-established printing house of David Niven for a conger of Scottish booksellers, with "reprinted illustrations as frontispieces to each volume that had originally been issued in two London publications, the 1747 edition of The Spectator (published by J. and R. Tonson and Somerset Draper) and the 1786 edition of the periodical that James Harrison & Co. had issued in eight volumes. No such multivolume, illustrated reprint of a periodical would be undertaken by a Glasgow printer again" (Jung, p. 105). Uncommon on the open market, ESTC lists eight sets in British and Irish institutional libraries, six in North America, Provenance: contemporary simple engraved book label in each volume of "Robert Bogle, Gilmore Hill"; the powerful Bogle dynasty was established by George Bogle (1700-1784), a Glasgow merchant. Tagli a spruzzo rossi.
