WILLIAM IV
1791. saying that he is "interested in the welfare of Lieutenant Delafosse of the York, I beg leave to introduce this young officer to your Lordship's kind notice and protection. I believe him to be one of merit and worthy of promotion. I always embrace every opportunity with pleasure of calling myself to your Lordship ...", 1 side 4to., Bushey House, 14th June From 1791 William lived with an Irish actress, Dorothea Bland, better known by her stage name, Mrs. Jordan, the title "Mrs." being assumed at the start of her stage career to explain an inconvenient pregnancy. William had grown up under the Royal Marriages Act 1772, which forbade descendants of George II from marrying unless they either obtained the monarch's consent or, if over the age of 25, gave twelve months' notice to the Privy Council. Several of George III's sons, including William, chose to cohabit with the women they loved, rather than seek a wife. George III accepted his son's relationship with the actress (though recommending that he halve her allowance) and in 1797, he created William Ranger of Bushy Park, which included a large residence, Bushy House, for William's growing family. William used Bushy as his principal residence until he became king.

She is best known for her role in duping the Cardinal de Rohan into purchasing a necklace that held the value of 2,000,000 livres for Queen Marie Antoinette, who had no involvement in the plan. Jeanne pretended that she had a good relationship with the Queen and convinced Rohan that he was in private communications with the Queen. Joseph Butler
Butler Family of Burlington NJ, 1791. A FANTASTIC EARLY AMERICAN ESTATE HANDWRITTEN LEATHER LEDGER FROM THE BUTLER FAMILY OF BURLINGTON CO, NJ! THIS INCLUDES DIRECT TIES TO DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE SIGNER ROBERT MORRIS, JOHN ADAMS' SON THOMAS BOYLSTON, GEORGE WASHINGTON'S PHYSICIAN, DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE PRINTER JOHN DUNLAP AND MORE! This ledger was kept by Joseph Butler and Rachel Butler on the death of Rachel's Husband and Joseph's Father, John Butler. It was used to record payouts by the estate. From what I have been able to find out through research John Butler married Rachel Quest Oct 6, 1758 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. John Butler was the son of Richard Butler and was born in New Jersey, possibly in Mansfield Township, Burlington Co, on Aug. 29, 1725 and according to records died in Chesterfield Township in Burlington, May 30th 1789. There are numerous references to Burlington NJ throughout. His family is also mentioned throughout, including his wife Rachel, his children James Butler, Joseph Butler, Samuel Butler, Israel Butler, Shadelock Butler, Rebecca (William) Brooks, and Elizabeth Prickett. The earliest receipt in the ledger is dated Sept 29, 1791, although there are earlier references on a few pinned in receipts. A majority of the receipts date from 1791 - 1792, then 1793 - 1805 it becomes more sparse. Additionally, it appears a family member used the book to record a couple of transactions in 1859-1860 as well. Some of the signers of the receipts include: Thomas Adams (I believe this to be Thomas Boylston Adams, son of Founding Father and 2nd P … [Click Below for Full Description]

EDY, J[ohn] W[illiam]
London,: John Harris Sweetings, N. 24 Cornhill & N. 8 Broad Street, February 17, 1791. DescriptionEtching with aquatint. NotesJohn William Edy (1760-1820) was a painter and engraver. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools from 1779, and made a successful career in landscapes, often working with the publisher John Boydell, who sent him to make drawings for his best known work, Picturesque Scenery of Norway. Edys view of the river shows the river bank at Lambeth in the foreground, with Westminster Bridge and Westminster Abbey in the distance. The river bank is teeming with life: there are porters unloading cargo, a ferry arriving with passengers, and a flower seller with a boat full of plants. On a flight of steps off the shore a fashionably dressed couple converse. There is a lavishly decorated barge moored in the centre, surrounded by more humble craft. An interesting inclusion is the Artificial Stone Manufactory visible at the far left: this is most probably the business of Eleanor Coade, a remarkable businesswoman and sculptor who produced durable stone-like products out of ceramic. She took over the factory from Daniel Pincot, a former employee of Josiah Wedgewood. Coade stone was used on buildings from the Royal Pavilion in Brighton to the Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Jean-Xavier Bureaux de Pusy - France. Assemblée nationale constituante (1789-1791) - Imprimerie nationale (France.
Paris : De l'imprimerie nationale, 1791. L'ambassadeu … [Click Below for Full Description]

the author of Principles of Politeness, &c
London: Printed for the author at the Literary-Press, No. 62 Wardour Street, Soho, and all Book-sellers in Town and Country, 1791. Duodecimo (16 x 10.5 cm.), 120, [4-12] pages. Illustrated with twenty-one wood engravings. Publisher's advertisements at rear. ~ Second edition. First issued in 1788, this juvenile etiquette manual for mealtime is best known for its extensive section on carving, well-illustrated with nineteen handsome woodcuts of carving instruction for different cuts of meat, in addition to an image of the author's coat of arms on the verso of the title page, and an illustration within the publisher's advertisements. Oxford points out that the book contains "curious information as to the habits of the day. For example the custom of 'a gentleman and a lady sitting alternately around the table' had only been lately introduced." Trusler (1735-1820) was the editor of Lord Chesterfield's Principles of Politeness (1785), and has been described as an "eccentric divine, literary compiler, and medical empiric" (DNB). Some soiling throughout, and a number of closed tears; lower corner of one leaf (pages 119/120) torn off, effecting one line of text on each page. In early marbled boards over half-calf with the spine now mostly perished, with the structure now visible. Some signatures loose, but all is present, and still well-contained despite the spine. Now housed in an attractive custom clamshell box from Town's End Bindery. With the ownership signature of American historian Wilfrid Harold Munro.

SLAVE TRADE.)
Edinburgh: Printed at the Joint Expence of the Glasgow and Edinburgh Societies, instituted for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, 1791. Duodecimo (192 x 110 mm). Uncut in original paper wrappers. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine backing lost, covers spotted, wear to tips, rear cover slightly chipped at foot of joint, sewing loosening, some worming to front cover leading on to initial 9 leaves and map, minor offset from slave ship plate. Overall still a very good, unrestored copy. First Edinburgh edition of the bestselling précis of the Select Committee hearings on the slave trade, perhaps one of the earliest and greatest works of investigative journalism in English; this copy with a pleasing double association of two Scottish Enlightenment intellectuals. First published in London the same year, this work was the first book against slavery that, instead of arguing from the Bible or relying on the rhetorical skills of a Clarkson or Wilberforce, rested its case entirely on a carefully documented series of eyewitness accounts. These shocking accounts were augmented, on a large folding plate, by the famous stark woodcuts of slaves packed below decks. Despite the evidence given, the motion for abolition was defeated that year, and the slave trade was not abolished in the British Empire until 1807. The provenance is highly apposite, with the ownership signatures of Scottish Enlightenment writer James Dunbar (1742-1798) to the verso of the front cover and that of the female laird Elizabeth Rose of Kilravock (1747-1815) to the title page. GONZÁLEZ DE AGÜEROS, Padre Fray Pedro.
Madrid: Don Benito Cano, 1791. Small quarto, with a plate and a large folding map of the I. de Chiloe; a fine copy in contemporary Spanish marbled calf, spine gilt with crimson label. An important work, among the earliest post-Cook printings relating to Tahiti, and one of very few early accounts of Spanish activity there in the 1770s. González de Agüeros was head of the Franciscan missionary college of Santa Rosa at Ocapa, in Peru. After his return to Spain, he wrote this history of the Chilean province of Chiloé. It includes a lengthy résumé of the Aguila expedition under Captain Boenechea that came to Tahiti to leave two Franciscan missionaries in 1774, prompted by reports of the recent English voyages in the Pacific. Just two missionary friars were sent and it was ultimately unsuccessful. A later section describes their stay at Santa Cruz de Chatutira in Tautira Bay from January to November 1775. There is also an account of the neighbouring islands and their natural productions. --- The relevant section is entitled Noticias práticas, é individuales de las islas nombradas vulgarmente de Otahiti ó Carolinas situadas en el mar del Sur, ó Pacífico. Although O'Reilly and Reitman - citing Fernandez de Navarrete's Biblioteca maritima española and D. Barros Arana's Historia jeneral de Chile - find fault with González de Agüeros's sources, nonetheless it remains a significant and early work. Most of the material to do with the voyages of the Aguila only appears in nineteenth or twentieth-century books, chiefly Corney's "Quest and Occupation of Tahiti". The book is surprisingly ra … [Click Below for Full Description]

The front and rear hinges appear to have been reinforced with a flexible type of glue. Burgundy spine label is a little chipped and shows some wormholes. The binding is sound. Lacks the front flyleaves; the first leaf is the title page. 20th century pencil notations and an antique shop's label is on the front paste down. Early owner's signature of Isaac Nelson is at the top of the title page, and there is a red stain on the title. The text is browned and foxed with the foxing sometimes heavy. There are also several 19th century inscriptions on the rear flyleaves and in the text, dating from the 1850s as well as during the Civil War. One 1851 inscription on the rear flyleaf notes that this volume was bought (by Steven Hester) at Allen Whicker's auction in Forsyth County in 1850. The initial title page for this work is 1791, but the date on the spine is 1799. This volume also has about 9 separately printed compilations of yearly laws bound in at the rear covering each year from 1792 to 1799. Each section is paginated separately and has renewed printers signatures (A, B, C, etc.). There is a final 8 page index at the very end. Joseph Butler
Butler Family of Burlington NJ. Some of the signers of the receipts include: Thomas Adams (I believe this to be Thomas Boylston Adams, son of Founding Father and 2nd Preside … [Click Below for Full Description]
