Carlile, Robert
1791. Fourth Copy. Full Tree Calf. Very Good. A spectacular manuscript, with watercolors done directly onto pages. As indicated this is the "Fourth Copy", and six copies are known to have been made. Folio, 42.5 by 32.5 cm. 46 watercolored or drawn plates, most full color, and three manuscript title pages -- the primary title page and two internal titles. Frontis exterior view of cathedral, and later, an interior view, referred to below. Following title page for "The Legend of Saint Anthony . . . North Aile", fourteen watercolors. Following "South Aile", 22 watercolors. 10 additional plates subsequent, of which one is full color watercolor, of the interior of the cathedral, eight have partial coloring, and one is of calligraphic lettering. Five of these are of funereal subject matter -- tombs or tombstones. We can not say how many of the six copies have survived. OCLC First Search does report the existence of three incomplete versions (one of the North Aile, one of the South Aile, one without reference to an interior title) but without an institution, and we would infer that these three references are the outgrowth of a single copy which was subsequently broken up and whose existence was reported to OCLC without giving ownership placement. There is a single auction record we could find of another copy from a 1938 auction. No other copies show up on various internet sale sites as of the date of this listing. Condition: joints/hinges cracked. Separation and rubbing by front joint, and rubbing of calf mostly along edges otherwise. The few unmounted tissue gua … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOHN SMEATON, CIVIL ENGINEER
LONDON. 1791. JOHN SMEATON -" A Narrative of the Building and a Description of the Construction of the Edystone Lighthouse with stone: to which is Subjoined, an Appendix, giving some Account of the Lighthouse on the Spurn Point, built upon a Sand". London - Printed for the author by H. Hughs, 1791 First edition. VERY LARGE HEAVY Folio (18" by 12" weighing 8 kilos). With xiv + 198pp, engraved vignette on title and 23 fine engraved plates. Contemporary marbled boards, well rebacked in calf. Skempton No.1338. The first edition of Smeaton's own account of his great lighthouse, completed in 1759, his first major project as a civil engineer. His masonry tower was the third to be built on the treacherous Eddystone reef, 14 miles off the Plymouth coast, and had several remarkable pioneering features, notably the dovetailing and interlocking of the blocks of stone to ensure maximum strength and durability, a brilliant innovation which continued to be used for later masonry towers. In order to find the best and strongest hydraulic cement, ie. one which would set under water, Smeaton conducted a series of experiments which form a landmark in the understanding of the make-up and properties of this vital building component. The book describes all of this, as well as giving a detailed, season-by-season account of the construction, revealing the appalling difficulties encountered in building on such a site. It is illustrated by a series of exceptionally fine plates, many drawn by Smeaton or his daughters, which show the lighthouse in section and elevation, the method of joining the stone … [Click Below for Full Description]

VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet)
A Buckingham. (Probably Paris, 1791). Full morocco, 8.75 inches tall. A stunning binding by David with gilt raised bands, very finely gilt tooled panels, dentelles and all edges gilt. Gilt triple fillets and floral corner tools frame the boards. Embellished with 43 engraved plates, 21 probably being from the published work and a further 22 explicitly erotic engraved plates. Three sections of verse have been completed in a contemporary hand where left originally blank. Many clandestine editions were printed of this scandalous poem, considered contrary to the moral values of France. In its original French, this is a particularly beautiful example of this heroic poem in 14 songs by Voltaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Walthard-Weigelt 41; Hayn-Got. IV, 400 F.; Fromm 16217; Lewine 339; Rümann 691. - Selten! [Click Below for Full Description]
