An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe; with various Papers Relative to the Plague: Together with Further Observations on some Foreign Prisons and Hospitals; and additional remarks on the present state of those in Great Britain and Ireland.

London: J. Johnson, C. Dilly and T. Cadell, 1791. Quarto, with 22 engraved plans and views (18 of them folding) and a large folding table; bound without the half-title in contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine banded in gilt, red morocco label; an excellent copy. The second edition, with substantial additions, of Howard's second great book, published posthumously. The additions were made by John Aikin, as instructed by Howard, from his notes, in order to complete his life-work on the study of institutions of detention. This study took place at precisely the period of the transportation system and was of great consequence in beginning a more humane approach to all aspects of imprisonment and detention, from hulks and gaols to convict ships, quarantine stations, mental hospitals and the entire apparatus of transportation in general, including a re-examination of the philosophy behind institutions of secondary punishment.Following the publication of The State of Prisons, in 1785 John Howard began the final phase of his work, journeying for fifteen months throughout western and southern Europe inspecting Lazarettos (which term encompassed mental hospitals as well as quarantine stations and hospitals for the treatment of plague victims or "lazars"). After the first edition of this work appeared in 1789 he set out again for the continent, travelling through the Netherlands, Germany and Poland, but dying of fever in southern Russia, where he was buried.Howard's work as a whole represents a huge leap forward in the development of the public health movement, and had ramifications throughout the institutional world. His newly humane approach included a significant new approach to hygiene and cleanliness, which would impact on the general management of ships as well of course as the day-to-day running of convict vessels.During his extraordinarily active life Howard had 'travelled approximately 50,000 miles, notebook in hand, visiting prisons, hospitals, lazarettos, schools and workhouses, speaking with authorities, measuring rooms and even tasting the provisions. His life can be described as one extended tour of prisons and hospitals. His investigations culminated in the publication of the State of the Prisons in England and Wales (1777) and An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe (1789). These volumes presented the layout and organisation of prisons and lazarettos, as well as conditions inmates faced, whether good or bad' (Science Museum, London; online resource). The Howard League for Penal Reform, still an active and influential body, carries on his work today. From an entirely different point of view, an oddly interesting note appears here in the "Directions to the Book-binder": "N.B. I would just hint to the book-binder, that as this work is printed with a full page, in order to be uniform with my last publication, it may be proper to cut off as little as possible at the top and bottom of the leaves" Front joint splitting but quite firm.

Discoveries of the French in 1768 & 1769, to the South-East of New Guinea, with the subsequent visits to the same lands by English Navigators, who gave them new names. To which is prefixed, an historical abridgment of the voyages and discoveries of the Spaniards in the same seas.

London: John Stockdale, 1791. Quarto, with 12 folding charts; in contemporary polished half calf, marbled boards., An attractive copy of the first English edition of the great work on the French discovery of the Solomon Islands. As might be expected given its connection to Governor Phillip's Voyage to Botany Bay, this was published by John Stockdale, publisher of both Phillip and of many other works on New South Wales and the First Fleet. Some browning and offsetting to the plates; hinges a bit chipped and worn, but still very firm, a little bumped and rubbed, inoffensive mark to base of spine. A very good copy.

Autograph note to the London publisher Thomas Cadell.

London: 10 February 1791. Manuscript in ink on a single piece of paper, originally folded, 140 x 233 mm. A fascinating early expression of interest in Botany Bay, by an eighteenth-century figure of renown, and a close relation to Watkin Tench: Tench's second cousin writes to London to acquire books on New South Wales, at a time when Tench himself was still in Port Jackson.Tarleton's pursuit of the earliest books on the new colony at Botany Bay evidently reflects a wide family interest: by the time of Tench's second book published in 1793 no fewer than nine copies were subscribed by different branches of the Tarleton family. There would have been a personal relationship between Tarleton and Tench, who were both of an age, and who both left England as young men to join the American War of Independence. The Tarletons were a prominent merchant family in the Liverpool region of England. Their own ships traded in the West Indies, Africa and America and were no doubt involved in the huge slave trade of the period which contributed to the wealth of the city of Liverpool. They were also major sugar importers from the West Indies. As a soldier, General Banastre Tarleton was one of the best-remembered and most-hated British officers to fight in the American war. He rose spectacularly through the ranks to be given independent command of the British Legion before the age of twenty-four. It was during the capture of Charleston in 1780, in which he employed unusually ruthless and cruel tactics, that he gained the epithet "Bloody Ban", which stuck with him for life. Tarleton returned to England in 1782 as a hero and became a member of the Prince of Wales' inner circle, a member of Parliment and was knighted in 1790. At the time he wrote this note to his publisher Thomas Cadell, the great travel and exploration publisher of the late eighteenth century, Tarleton would have been aware that Watkin Tench had been active in setting up the convict settlement at Port Jackson from 1788. Tench had arrived in Port Jackson on the convict ship Charlotte on 20 January serving a three-year tour of service at England's newest colony after his work in the American war. Perhaps it was also in relation to Tarleton's parliamentary duties that he required information on the fledgling colony of Botany Bay. Dated only three years after settlement, Tarleton's note reads: 'Colonel Tarleton's compliments to Mr Cadell & wishes him to find as soon as possible, all the pamphlets that have been published relative to South Wales [sic] or Botany Bay... '.At this early date only a handful of publications dedicated to Botany Bay had appeared, including the first of Tench's works, A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay... published in London in 1789. Whilst Cadell had only been involved in a couple of related publications, Tarleton would naturally have turned to his own publisher in the Strand to gather the information he required. Top corner restored.

The Botanic Garden; A Poem, in Two Parts. Part I. Containing The Economy of Vegetation. Part II. The Loves of the Plants'

London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1791. Two parts in one volume, quarto, with separate title-pages to each part, two frontispieces, one engraved vignette in Part II, and 18 engraved plates, of which nine in Part I (four folding) and nine in Part II;; an excellent copy in a handsome contemporary binding of polished crimson calf with a gilt border, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. A beautiful copy of Erasmus Darwin's verse epic, his first major literary work, admired by Walpole and praised in a joint poem by Cowper and Hayley. Grandfather of Charles, Erasmus Darwin was a physician, philosopher and poet; Coleridge called him the 'first literary character in Europe'. This book is best known as a precursor to the work of his famous grandson in propounding a sort-of evolutionary theory. It was issued in two parts "The Economy of Vegetation" and "The Loves of the Plants".It has an interesting connection with the first settlement at Botany Bay. Darwin's poem "Visit of Hope to Sydney Cove, near Botany Bay" was written to accompany the medallion made by Josiah Wedgwood from clay sent by Joseph Banks from Botany Bay. An engraving of the medallion was used to adorn the title-page of Phillip's Voyage. Wedgwood sent one of the medallions to Erasmus who replied that 'I have received great pleasure from your excellent medallion of Hope. The figures are all finely beautiful, and speak for themselves... ' (Smith, The Sydney Medallion). Both the medallion and Darwin's poem portray, in allegorical form, Hope encouraging Art and Labour, under the influence of Peace, to give security and happiness to an infant settlement. The Wedgwood medallion makes another appearance in this book, appearing as an engraving opposite a new reference in verse to Botany Bay, while a note describes how the Wedgwood medallion was 'made of clay from Botany Bay; to which place he sent many of them to shew the inhabitants what their material would do, and to encourage their industry... ' (p. 87).While it was Erasmus' grandson Charles who shook the world with evolutionary theory, his grandfather Erasmus had actually been an earlier explorer in the subject - 'to elaborate upon the implications of the 'promiscuous' animals of New South Wales [and to use] the idea of this promiscuity as the basis for his theory that all life derived from primeval filaments, such promiscuous intercourse between different filaments giving rise to the extant species of animals... ' (Finney, To Sail Beyond the Sunset). Darwin's scientific speculations, including his ideas on the generation of life, influenced Mary Shelley, and through her, science fiction writing.William Blake seems to have engraved at least five of the plates (see Bentley, p. 547), although only one of them - the striking "Fertilisation of Egypt" after Fuseli - is signed. Blake was probably also responsible for the four engravings of the Portland Vase. Not recorded by Ferguson, despite its obvious Australian relevance. This copy comprises the first edition of part I: 'The Economy of Vegetation' and the third edition of part II: 'The Loves of the Plants'. Some slight offsetting from the plates and very light foxing to a few leaves.

The Genuine Life and Trial of George Barrington, from his birth, in June, 1755, to the Time of his Conviction at the Old-Bailey, in September, 1790, For robbing Henry Hare Townsend, Esq. of his gold Watch, Seals, &c.

London: W. Clements & J. Sadler, 1791. Octavo in fours, with wood-engraved frontispiece. Very rare: the second issue of this scarce pamphlet celebrating the misdeeds and famous speeches from the dock of Australia's most famous convict. This is one of the earliest and most cheaply produced of the Barrington pieces, rarely seen complete with its frontispiece which depicts Barrington picking the pocket of Townsend. This copy is in characteristic condition for such an ephemeral work: in addition to the usual general soiling, there is a contemporary inscription - now partly cropped - in ink on the blank recto of the frontispiece: 'John Bell His Bo[ok] March 28 1797'. Frontispiece cropped by an early binder, title repaired, contemporary owner's inscription in ink, partially obliterated, withal a good copy in recent quarter calf.

Berlin: Voss, 1791. Three volumes, quarto, with four folding maps and 27 engraved plates.; contemporary marbled calf gilt. The first edition of this highly important work, an extensive account of discoveries and exploration of the Northwest coast of America from the time of Captain Cook. Forster had of course sailed with and extensively written about Cook and continues to do so in commentary here. An earlier much slighter work (Geschichte der Entdeckungen und Schiffahrten im Norden, Frankfurt, 1784) had also dealt with discoveries on the Northwest coast, and that earlier work appeared in both English and French versions. This very much more substantial study did not appear in translation and seems to be rare in institutional collections. It is the only copy of the work that that we have handled for sale. Forbes gives a detailed account of the contents of the three volumes and notes that it is 'an early and imprtant compilation of voyages to the Northwest Coast containing the voyages of Meares, Mortimer, Portlock and Dixon. In volume I, the "Enleitung" contains under the title "Chronologische Nachricht von den Entdeckungen an der Nordwestkuste von Amerika" a series of essays and other commentary by Forster reviewing the history of Northwest Coast explorations, including early explorers such as Juan de Fuca, the Russians and the Spanish, Captain Cook, George Dixon, John Meares and James Colnett, with notes on the difficulties between England and Spain over control of this area'. In good crisp condition. Spines of bindings somewhat worn and joints wearing but strong; of three small oval numbering-pieces one is original, one a replacement, and one missing.

Bon exemplaire.***** First edition. "Mechanism of Human Speech with the Description of a Speaking Machine". This book has been published in French and in German at the same time. The French version seems the rarest of two. Illustrated by a portrait and 26 engraved plates. " While the Turk the Chess-player was constructed in six months since Kempelen promised it to Her Majesty Maria Theresa, the construction of the speaking machine demanded more than twenty years and still he could not consider it to be finished. This machine had to produce the letters and syllables, even the words and short sentences almost in every European language. Related to the work a treatise was published by J. V. Degen in Vienna in 1791 in German and French titled Le Méchanisme de la parole, suivi de la description d'une machine parlante (Mechanism of Human Speech with the Description of a Speaking Machine), which proves, that Kempelen's speaking machine was neither a mystification nor a mechanical toy, while the principle, which underlied a construction of a chess automaton still remained unknown. In any case the book Mechanism of Human Speech confirmed outstanding Kempelen's capacities to reason profoundly in abstract philosophical concepts and to affiliate them with exact technological and constructional thinking. (...) Nonetheless, the extensive treatise Mechanism of Human Speech by W. von Kempelen represents a unique work in the history of phonetics, which profoundly influenced later development of the science of sonic aspect of language and which thus deserves as great publicity as possible. (...) Kempelen's machine was not in fact a " speaking machine " in a real sense of the word, but a mechanism for production of speech sounds, words even sentences. An accurate hearing was needed to operate the machine, because vocals and many consonants had to be continually controlled. A degree of openess of a mouth cavity and the period of oscillations of a sound with consonants were not mechanically determined. (...) Kempelen's speaking machine may be interpreted as a cognitive model. Disregarding purely psychical components following parts (stages) may be identified in a communicative process: neurophysiological, organogenetical (articulative), auditorial (external, middle and internal ear) and again neurophysiological (competent sections of central nervous system) in perception. Kempelen's machine serves as a model for articulatory and partly acoustic stage, and his significance resides especially in this double modelling. A pure articulatory modelling would not possess a genuine scientific value, it would be simply only an imitation of observed articulatory processes. Acoustic modelling uncovered a relevance of properties of cavities and provided a scientific information on speech processes." (Slavomir Ondrejovic). In-8. Collation : Portrait, XII, 464, (4) pp., 26 planches hors-texte. Demi-basane brune, dos à nerfs orné. (Reliure du début du XIXe.).

Testacea utriusque Siciliae eorumque Historia et Anatome tabulis aenaeis illustrata, Tomus primus, Atlas

1791 - One of the rarest and most beautiful works on shells. The main work was published in two volumes between 1791 and 1795. A third supplementary volume was published many years later by S. della Chiaje in 1826-27 containing two parts of which the last part was never finished. This third volume is one of the greatest rarity and lacking in most collections. Dance in his section bibliography 251 considers the work complete in two volumes. Only very few copies of this work have been coloured (our plates are in b/w). "In Italy and Sicily there were few collectors of any size and according to the Swiss traveller Carl Ulysses von Salis Marschlins, who wandered about the Kingdom of Naples in 1789 and published an account of the marine shells he found, there were only two persons in the kingdom who possessed a cabinet of shells worth visiting. One of these was Chevalier Giuseppe Gioeni and the other Giuseppe Saverio Poli, the tutor of the royal heir apparent of the two sicilies. Poli. is celebrated as the author of a lavishly illustrated, scientifically illuminating and extremly costly work on the molluscs of Sicily, which because it is so rare, is not widely known as it should" (Dance p. 67). Several artists such as Franc. Morelli, Casanova, Lo Manto and engravers such as Io. Brun and Scarpati contributed to the work. Poli studied with the help of the anatomist Michele Troja the molluscs of the Mediterranean. In his 'Testacea.' he outlined a new classification of molluscs based on his detailed anatomical descriptions. 1+31 pp., 18+18 b/w pls, hardcover, Folio [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Maometto legislatore degli arabi e fondatore dell'Impero musulmano. Poema del canonico kav. Baccanti di Casalmaggiore vice-custode della Colonia Eridania gia' uno de' XXII colleghi d'Arcadia.

Fratelli Bizzarri, 1791. Due volumi in 4° (mm 250x193), pp. (6), 197, (1) con (2), VI tavole incise in rame, (4), 197, (3) con VII-XII tavole incise in rame. In antiporta tavola de &ldquo,Il profeta guerriero&rdquo,. &ldquo,Scholars of the Enlightenment particularly struggled with dual impulses towards Muhammad's depiction, aspiring both to a more historically-based, objective image of the Prophet, yet also perpetuating the public appetite for romantic, exotic details&rdquo, (A. Shalem, ed., Constructing the image of Muhammad in Europe, Berlin-Boston, 2013, p. 3). Catalogo unico, ITICCULO1E013060.

Act for Granting Lands in the Territory Northwest of the Ohio

1791 - UNITED STATES CONGRESS. Act for Granting Lands to the Inhabitants and Settlers at Vincennes and the Illinois County, in the Territory north-west of the Ohio, and for confirming them in their Possessions Approved, March the third, 1791. [Philadelphia: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1791]. Folio, original sheet measures 8 by 11 inches, printing on recto and verso; pp.2. $2500.First official printing of a key early land-grant Act, a rare folio printing of one of the very first laws to reach into new western territories, passed by the First Congress under the supervision of Secretary of State Jefferson and approved into law by Washington on March 3, 1791.This is a rare printing of the 1791 Land Grant Act—among the very first to concern territory so far to the west. Passed by America’s First Congress and approved by Washington on March 3, 1791, the law grants land to pioneers in the area northwest of the Ohio River, in what is now Indiana and Illinois. As a key representation of America’s vital interest in the territories, this law reflects the early planning of Secretary of State Jefferson, who saw such land "as a valuable buffer zone against the colonies of the European powers in North America," and puts into practice his planning for "stages of orderly territorial government" (Randall, 362). In addition the law answers a need to manage "225 million acres of public land [acquired] under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1783" and land added through states’ cessions of western claims. As such this Act allows Revolutionary War veterans "to locate their bounty land warrants in a military tract located in the center of Ohio territory" (Lamar, 613) and further awards land to those who moved to the Illinois territory in 1783, partly in anticipation of "services soon to be needed in the approaching Indian War" (Esarey, History of Indiana, 136). Disbound from congressional Acts issued at the end of each session by Childs & Swaine, chief printers for Congress "during its ten years in Philadelphia" (Powell, 99). OCLC lists three copies of this Act. Evans 23853. An about-fine copy of this important document in western history. [Attributes: First Edition]
