Valois de La Motte, Comtesse de [Jeanne]:
London [i. e. Paris ?], 1789. 204 S. Wahrscheinlich Erstausgabe der Memoiren der französischen Abenteuerin. Eingehende Würdigung s. Nouv. Biogr. Gen. XXIX S. 267 ff. - Jeanne de Valois Saint-Rémy (1756-1791), Tochter von J. H. de Saint-Rémy, Baron v. Luze u. v. Marmor. Pp. REVOLUTION FRANCAISE - ETATS GENERAUX DE LA PROVINCE DE PICARDIE
Amiens, Jean Baptiste Caron, 1789. ARIOSTO (Lodovico)
Cambridge. Printed by J. Archdeacon; Sold by the Editor J. & J. Merrill and W. H. Lunn in Cambridge; J. Robson J. Deighton - Edwards J. Johnson London: and D. Prince & J. Cooke Oxford, 1789. FIRST EDITION. FOUR VOLUMES. 8vo, 178 x 107 mms., pp. 7 [8 - 14 Subscribers], 367 [368 blank]; [ii], 455 [ 456 blank]; [ii], 451 [452 blank]; [ii], 432, slightly later half green calf, marbled boards, gilt rules on spine, olive and red morocco labels; corners slightly worn, binding very slightly soiled, but a good to very good set. Having studied with Agostino Isola (1715 - 1797), Wordsworth attempted his own translation of Orlando Furioso and completed two books but "found the difficulty of translating him insurmountable." The first English translation was by Sir John Harington (1561 - 1612) and was published in 1591. Isola's edition was reviewed in The Analytical Review in 1790, the reviewer noting that "The learned public is very much indebted to Signior Agostino Isola, for this very elegant and commodious edition, of one of the most distinguished Italian poets. The English admirers of Ariosto, (and they are not few) have in these four pocket volumes, a correct text of his capital work; with an illustration of such passages, as one, not more than commonly versed in Italian poetry, would with difficulty understand." BLAIR (Hugh)
Dublin: Printed for Messrs. Colles Moncreiff Gilbert Walker Exshaw White and Byrne, 1789. 2 volumes. 8vo, 201 x 122 mms., pp. vi [vii - viii Contents], 384; [iv], 382 [383 - 408 Index], contemporary calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments with basket ornament, red and olive morcco labels; tops and bases of spines chipped, joints slightly cracked (but firm), slight worming to spine of volume 1, but a decent set with the armorial bookplate of John Vaughan Colby on the front paste-down end-paper, his autograph on the top margin of the second front free end-paper, with the late rAutogarph of James Phillips Lloyd on the top margin of each title-page, with some initials underneath. Blair's frequently-reprinted book was first published in 1783, and the first Dublin edition appeared in the same year. It was extensively and mostly favourably reviewed, but a long and thorough review in The Critical Review 1783 was not so complimentary and concluded that there "were many inaccuracies of style in these Lectures. The passages, which we have now cited, will be sufficient to justify this observation; and may serve in some respect to show, that the Eloquence of this country has not yet fixed her residence on the north side of the Tweed. Some of these improprieties may be thought too trivial to deserve the attention of a celebrated author, and others may probably be defended by analogy, or the example of preceding writers. But the greater part of them are real violations of grammar, or of that purity, propriety, and precision, which Dr. Blair himself has justly recommended." IVERNOIS François d'

Still, in fine condition. Two different early signatures in blank margins of plates 21 and 22. There is no loss of text. *** FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of this early Spanish contribution to clock-making literature. A second issue with a new title page appeared in 1791, and a facsimile reprint in Valencia, 1986. The plates, engraved by José Giraldo y García after designs by Zerella, depict clocks, plans for their construction, and their machinery. "The book is original work and shows several novel constructions, including a two-wheel clock . The drawings are beautifully executed" (Baillie). Relatively few original works by Spaniards devoted wholly to clock-making had been published in Spain before this time: this appears to be the most heavily illustrated, and therefore probably the most useful. John Brand (1744–1806) clergyman and antiquary, was one of Newcastle's most prominent 18th century sons. Educated at the Newcastle Royal Grammar School he was originally from very humble origins although he rose to become Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries and secretary and librarian to the Duke of Northumberland himself. Printed in a generous run of 1,000 copies his history was at the time widely criticized as being dull, too detailed and parochial—it certainly lacked the vivacity and anecdotal detail to be found in Bourne. Giovanni Maria CASSINI
Uncommon maps, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. 470 345mm

J. J. Tourneisen. Sold by Pissot, 1789. In-8° (212x125mm), pp. (2), VI, 424, legatura coeva p. pelle con titolo in oro su tassello, filetti e fregi floreali in oro su dorso liscio. Tagli a spruzzo, sguardie marmorizzate.
