Lady Craven (1750-1828) was an author and playwright as well as an aquaintence of both Boswell and Johnson. This book is an account of these travels, published at the suggestion of her friend and admirer, Horace Walpole. DAVANZATI, Gioseppe (Giueseppi Davanzati, Archbishop of Trani).
Pesso Philippo Raimondi, Napoli / Naples, 1789. Hardcover. Octavo. (iv) (i) - (xxxii) (1)- (16),1-230pp. a–b8 (a1+*2) A–O8 P4. Contemporary vellum, sprinkled edges. A significant early work on Vampires, the first edition of which predated R. P. Dom Augustin Calmet's "Dissertations sur les apparitions des anges, des démons et des esprits, et sur les revenants et vampires de Hongrie, de Bohême, de Moravie et de Silésie" by two years. The author Giueseppi Davanzati (1665-1755), had a broad theological and secular education before serving as a papal representative, and later, archbishop of Trani before being named patriarch of Alexandria. The second quarter of the 1700s saw an outbreak of reports of vampirism from Germany and Eastern Eurpope, which sparked a heated debate within the church. The pope asked Davanzati to study the matter closely and prepare a response on behalf of the church; this was published as "Dissertazione sopra I Vampiri" in 1744. In it Davanzati concluded that vampire reports were most likely the result of human delusion, and should be treated as such, although it was possible that these fantasies had a diabolical background. Rare. Montague Summers remarked in 1933 that the British Museum lacked a copy of Davanzati and this is still the case as far as early editions go, although they now have a copy of the 1998 reprint. Summers needed to be cautious when dealing with Davanzati who was of too rational a disposition for his liking (when compared for instance to Calmet), although conceding that he had much of theological importance to bring to the matter in h … [Click Below for Full Description]

PORTLOCK, Nathaniel (1748-1817)
Printed for John Stockdale, and George Goulding, London, 1789. (11 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches). xii, 384, xl pp. 20 engraved plates, charts and maps (6 folding charts or maps, 2 engraved portraits, 12 engraved plates [the 5 ornithological plates with contemporary hand-colouring, as issued]). Bound to style in half calf and marbled paper covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second and fourth, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt Rare deluxe issue with hand coloured plates of the first edition of a classic narrative of the early exploration on the Northwest coast. Portlock, a veteran of Cook's third voyage, and Dixon were sent by the King George's Sound Company to the Northwest coast of North America to investigate the economic possibilities of the fur trade there. En route, they had a long stay in Hawaii, and Portlock's narrative of this visit is of particular interest since Portlock and Dixon were the first captains to visit the Hawaiian islands since the death of Cook. He gives an important account of the situation there, already much altered by European contact. The voyage then proceeded to the Northwest to survey the region. Portlock and Dixon separated, with Portlock exploring northward up the Alaskan coast and Dixon proceeding southward to Nootka Sound. Both Dixon and Portlock published accounts of the voyage, but Portlock is of greater value for his particularly vivid descriptions of the Native Americans and Russians in the region. In addition to the lively narrative, the work is well illustrated with 20 plates … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roux Frères to Georgi Haggi Zucka.
Izmir, Ottoman Empire: September 6, 1789. Manuscript in dark brown ink on hand made paper (21 x 8 cm / 8.2 x 3.1 inches), originally folded and cut through in three places, inserted in a custom made envelope with manuscript in dark brown ink, originally sealed, cut through (6.5 x 9 cm / 2.6 x 3.5 inches) (Very Good, slightly stained). A transfer docket with an early chisel cut for disinfection, probably against the plague, was sent from Izmir to Vienna in 1789. As the cover letter is opened, the main message, folded in the envelope, is still sealed and has never been read. - A hand written transfer docket in Italian, accompanied by a message, folded into an envelope, was written in Izmir, Ottoman Empire, in 1789 by the Roux Frères, a trading company, based in Marseille, France, to a Georgi Haggi Zu?ka (or Georgi Hagi Zucca), probably a Romanian tradesman, in Vienna (Zu?ka or Zucca would be probably a nickname meaning "ginger", most probably referring to a colour of his hair). The letter was pierced through with a sharp chisel, in order to disinfect it through the sealed middle when it went through a quarantine on the Ottoman – Venetian or Austro-Hungarian border. The stabbing through the letters was made for sanitary reasons at the customs between the Austro-Hungarian Empire or Venetian Republic and Ottoman Empire. The letter would be then sent through special vapours, that were intended to eradicate contagious substances. In this case the letter was probably disinfected against the plague, which was at the time common in in Dalmatian towns and all of the Ottoman imported g … [Click Below for Full Description]

T. Hodgson, 1789. First edition: "Imitated from a painting in the cemetery of the Dominican Church at Basil, in Switzerland: With an apostrophe to each, translated from the Latin and French. Intended as well for the information of the curious, as the instruction and entertainment of youth." Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of the Gray family (with "Anchor fast anchor" motto); front free endpaper with armorial bookplate of G. Wüthrich (with inked shelving number); back pastedown with armorial bookplate of C. Robert Bignold.

Hardback. 4to, cont. full calf, rebacked, raised bands, red leather title-piece, small chip to spine, corners restored. Some offseting, minor foxing, a few pages with pencil underlining. The present work is one of the most popular books in the English language and it has never been out of print since it has first been published in 1789. Numerous great English naturalists have been influenced by Gilbert White, chiefly among them Charles Darwin, who went on 'a pilgrimage to Selborne' in June 1857, and claimed that he 'stood on the shoulders' of White. Gilbert White was also admired by the great poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who called 'The Natural History of Selborne' a 'sweet delightful book'.[Martin, p. 103]

WASHINGTON, GEORGE
Boston: Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews. This is George Washington’s own signed copy of his First Inaugural Address, from his library at Mount Vernon. This famous address, marking the beginning of a new era in American history, addresses the great themes and issues of the day including the American Revolution, the Constitution, the need for a Bill of Rights, republican government, balance of powers, federalism, the danger of faction, consent of the governed, and more. Confident that “the foundations of our National Policy will be laid in the pure and immutable principles of private morality,” Washington observes that “there is no truth more thoroughly established, than that there exists in the economy and course of nature, an indissoluble union between virtue and happiness, between duty and advantage, between the genuine maxims of an honest and magnanimous policy, and the solid rewards of public prosperity and felicity.” Washington recognizes the historical significance of the American experiment: “ the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” The National Archives selected Washington’s First Inaugural Address as one of the 100 landmark documents of American history. See Our Documents: 100 Milestone Documents from the National Archives (Oxford University Press, 2003), 39.  The most recent major sales of books from Washington’s library have been a small group of inconsequential miscellane … [Click Below for Full Description]

You are bidding on the book The Eternity of the Universe by George Hoggart Toulmin, published London: Printed for J Johnson, St Paul's Church Yard, 1789 [1789]. 8vo, 248 p. First Edition. Recently rebound in black calf with red spine label. The 1789 edition of this minor but important geological treatise. Toulmin (1754-1817) was a physician who studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating with his MD in 1779. Although he would go on to publish works on medicine and poetry it is for this lone geological writing that he is best remembered. The current title is essentially a rework of The Antiquity and Duration of the World (1780), in which Toulmin outlined his views of man as an eternal, integral part of the universe. Implicit in this belief was the assumption that the universe had no beginning and no end, and therefore discounted the advent of the deluge. To this extent Toulmin's work echoed that of Hutton and Lyell, though Toulmin's influence on either man, and the degree to which he may have borrowed ideas from Hutton in particular, is the subject of much debate. (See GL Davies' George Hoggart Toulmin and the Huttonian Theory of the Earth) The 1780 edition was reissued in 1783 and 1785 with minor edits but completely rewritten for the 1789 edition. A VG copy, with moderate tanning to text block, extensive contemporaneous marginalia to the first forty of so pages, but internally clean and bright otherwise. A handsomely bound copy of this rare work. Toulmin remains a minor figure in the history of geological thought but one whose influence on Lyell and Hutton cannot … [Click Below for Full Description]

- [THE CULT OF ROUSSEAU]
Londres (London), 1789. 8vo. Cont. hcalf w. gilding on spine. Hinges and capitals repaired. Occasional minor brownspotting. Frontispiece portrait, 431 pp. Complete w. half-title. W. wookcut vignettes and 1 1/2 p. of musical notes. ¶ The not common first edition of the first biography of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, an important work of French Enlightenment, published in the year of the French Revolution. The work was published the year after Rousseau's death and is highly interesting due to its numerous anecdotes, several of which are not to be found anywhere else; Not all of them can be called fully reliable, though. The work is also interesting, not only as the first biography of Rousseau and as a contemporary source to the life of the great French philosopher, but also as a testimony to the influence and fascination of Rousseau to revolutionary France. The cult-role that Rousseau played before and during the French Revolution is difficult to overlook, and the degree of his popularity during the second half of the 18th century must be deemed no less than astonishing. This first biography of Rousseau begins with six letters that are supposed to be genuine, written by the author and dated 1788-89; one of them is to Madame de Staël, and they all contain interesting anecdotes concerning Rousseau. The author, an impoverished count who was born in 1756 and committed suicide in 1817 due to his ruin because of a punishment from the Tribunal, was an enthusiastic Rousseauphile, member of his cousin Rivarol's literary circle, and with the progress of the revolution a fervent royalist. BAFFO, Giorgio (1694-1768). -
Cosmopoli (Venezia ?) 1789. In-8 (196 x 148 mm.). Legatura moderna in pergamena. [Economics - France].
Engraved broadsheet, ca. 610 x 930 mm. Heightened with red wash and gold, neatly presented in tables with red and yellow wash with gold ruled borders. On laid paper with large armorial watermark and countermark of D. & C. Blauw. An engraved table with detailed statistics on international trade, probably prepared for official use. Such large-scale synoptic tables, representing on a single sheet of paper a substantial amount of economic and fiscal information about the state of the kingdom of France in a given year, were produced at least from 1785 onwards. The last known example dates from 1792, after which - France being drawn into war with most other European nations, the Terror looming large, and French economy in shambles - the production of these useful aids would appear to have been discontinued. - The table provides data about the following 24 countries: France, England, Turkey, Austria, Russia, Spain, Prussia, Portugal, Holland, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Denmark, Sweden, Sardinia, Saxe, Venice, Bavaria, the Papal States, Tuscany, Hanover, Genoa, Poland, Wurttemberg, Hesse-Kassel and Switzerland. The information concerns the surface, population, density, annual revenue, military expenditure, general expenditure, infantry and cavalry, and the naval strengths of each of these polities. Among other information, the "Apperçu" also includes data about the number of ships sent to and returned from India and China by European nations, with details about the value of expected and imported goods, and the balance. A summary calculates the real value of the importations i … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

KUSAZÔSHI] Torii Kiyotsune, artist
1789. [KUSAZÔSHI] Torii Kiyotsune, artist. Higashi no Hime Nishi no Hime AMEWAKAMIKO. N.P., N.D. [An'ei 8 {1779} Nishimuraya]. 17.2 x 12.5 cm. This little 3 volume b+w woodblock printed kibyôshi story book was part of the revolution in vernacular literature taking place in the mid to late 18th century in Japan. As the potential audience for stories expanded and the desire for skillful illustrations kept pace, such skilled artists as Santô Kyôden, and Kiyotsune provided visual content and sometimes the textual content as well. Between them they published 100s of the little story books, which, unfortunately, have not been systematically preserved. One runs across the occasional odd volume, in wretched condition, but the KSSM is largely empty of kusazôshi holdings. Interestingly, both Kiyonaga and Kiyotsune were disciples of the last great traditional Torii master, Torii Kiyomitsu. Kiyonaga changed his style over time to reflect the greater popularity of the nishikie brocade prints of Harunobu and others, while the more conservative Kiyotsune hewed more closely to the Torii style - more vigorous if a bit more awkward. That said, Kiyotsune pursued his career in kibyôshi illustration for decades. [May I refer you to a wonderful Master's Thesis written by Jason Heuer at UMASS Amherst: REIMAGINING TORII KIYOTSUNE AS A KIBYÔSHI ARTIST - 2012 - it can be found online]. Our copy is better than most of the genre in that it is complete. As usual bound 3 volumes in one, with two of the three original title sheets tipped onto the original cove … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Paris) 1789.
