SAINT-DOMINGUE] FOURNIER (Claude)

MORE THOMAS
Cfr. Iccu; Brunet, III, 1894; Graesse, IV, 603. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DUPONT DE NEMOURS (Pierre Samuel).
A Paris, chez Baudouin, 1789. - in-8. 40pp.

Barbier IV, 974. Livres [Attributes: First Edition]

- Chez Guillot, A Paris 1789, In-4 (20x26cm), (4) xxx (2) xx, 390pp. et (4) xv, 364pp., 2 volumes reliés. - Edition.

Bekker, Elisabeth Wolff; Deken: Agatha
- 8° (23,3x15,7cm): A8(A1+?1) B-L8 [M]1Pagination: [4] + 177 + [3] pp. Non-original cardboard paper binding with decorative paper on front and back boards. Good copy. Engraved title page with unsigned vignette. Betje (Elisabeth ) Wolff (1738-1804) and Aagje (Agatha) Deken (1741-1804) met each other in 1776. When Betje' s husband died in 1777 they decided to move in together. This was the start of a fruitful partnership. They wrote many novels, poetry and idealistic manifests. In 1788, the two friends left the Netherlands and moved to France, where they settled in Trévoux. As close witnesses of the French revolution, they published this work in 1789. Although little is known on the lives of the two women in France, the positive descriptions in this book suggest that they were happy there. L0865

[JACOBI, FRIEDRICH HEINRICH]. & BRUNO, MENDELSSOHN, ETC. - [THE FIRST EVER TRANSLATION OF BRUNO'S "DE UNO ET CAUSA"...]

Very beautiful contemporary red full calf binding with five raised bands and gilt green leather title-label to richly gilt spine. elaborate gilt borders to boards, inside which a "frame" made up of gilt dots, with giltcorner-ornamentations. Edges of boards gilt and inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Minor light brownspotting. Marginal staining to the last leaves. Engraved frontispiece-portrait of Spinoza, engraved title-vignette (double-portrait, of Lessing and Mendelssohn), engraved end-vignette (portrait of Jacobi). Frontispiece, title-page, LI, (1, -errata), 440 pp. Magnificent copy. ¶ First edition thus, being the seminal second edition, the "neue vermehrte Auflage" (new and expanded edition), which has the hugely important 180 pp. of "Beylage" for the first time, which include the first translation into any language of any part of Giordano Bruno's "de Uno et Causa..." (pp. 261-306) as well as several other pieces of great importance to the "Pantheismusstreit" and to the interpretation of the philosophy of Spinoza and Leibniz, here for the first time in print. The present translation of Bruno seems to be the earliest translation of any of Bruno's works into German, and one of the earliest translations of Bruno at all - as far as we can establish, the second, only preceded by an 18th century translation into English of "Spaccio della bestia trionfante". It is with the present edition of Jacobi's work that the interest in Bruno is founded and with which Bruno is properly introduced to the modern world. Jacobi not only provides what is s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarto, portrait and engraved title, seven folding engraved charts and 46 engraved plates; bound with the final leaf of advertisements; second state of the title-page, with a single name on the medallion; page 122 with the uncorrected mis-numbering 221, with the early 'Wulpine' state of the 'Vulpine Opossum' plate at p. 150, early state of the 'Kangooroo' plate at p. 106 (later changed to 'Kanguroo'); a fine copy in a very good modern binding (probably by Aquarius) of half calf and marbled boards, spine ornately panelled in gilt with crimson leather label. A handsome copy of the first edition: the foundation book of European settlement in Australia.Based on the governor's journals and despatches and assembled into book form by the London publisher Stockdale, this is - as the official account of the first settlement - the single most important book to describe the journey to Botany Bay and the foundations of modern Australia. It describes the events from March 1787, just before the First Fleet sailed from the Isle of Wight, up to September 1788. There is a chapter dealing with the fauna of New South Wales, appendices detailing the routes of various ships to Botany Bay, from Botany Bay to Norfolk Island and from Port Jackson to various other ports, and finally a list of convicts sent to New South Wales. The book also contains some excellent maps by John Hunter and William Dawes, including the first of the Sydney Cove settlement, which shows in detail the buildings and "progress" which had been made by July 1788.Davidson summarises the importance … [Click Below for Full Description]
