Captain of a Company
London: Printed for J. Bell, at the British Library, Strand, 1789. [4], 42, [2 blanks], with half title and final blank. Fine, in modern speckled cloth. The author, evidently an expert on the etiquette of the Law of Honor, explains that military officers must, "in a pre-eminent degree, be jealous of their character, and peculiarly quick in the perception of those circumstances which may impart the slightest soil to the purity of their reputation." The duel between Frederick Augustus, Duke of York, and Lieutenant Colonel Lenox was "the most unprecedented and most singular in its nature and circumstances." The Duke had remarked that "language had been used at D'Aubigny's Club toward Lenox, to which no gentleman ought to submit." When the Duke refused, "in terms of haughty defiance," to disclose the identity of the source, Lenox in vain sought the information from each member of D'Aubigny's. Lenox "had now a right to conclude, that the Duke of York was himself the author of the calumny." Lenox challenged; the Duke accepted, simultaneous pistol fire being the agreed weapon. But, as the Duke had privately advised his seconds, he had no intention of shooting. The Duke, who claimed no animosity toward Lenox, reserved his fire [DNB says the Duke fired into the air]. Lenox's bullet grazed the Duke. In a long discourse on the elaborate formalities of the Duel, the author vindicates Lenox's honor and denounces the Duke's "duplicity and deceit." ESTC T11100.

LA MOTTE (Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy, comtesse de)]
- Londres [i.e. Paris?], 1789.

Gay, II, 169. Martin & Walter, 6299. Tourneux, ‘Marie Antoinette devant l’histoire’, n°124). HIERTA, Fredrik.)
Stockholm, Anders Zetterberg, 1789. 8:o. (15),+ (blank),+ 63 s. Sammanbunden med: (HIERTA, Fredrik.) Journal hållen ofver kongl. svenska örlogs flottans krigs-rörelser uti Östersjön år 1789. Stockholm, Anders Zetterberg, 1790. 8:o. (6),+ 51,+ (7) s. COXE, William
L. White, P. Byrne, et al, 1789. Half-title in vol 1. Water damage in spine, some light spotting and discoloration throughout. Missing map in vol 1. First Dublin edition of Coxe's elaborate narrative detailing his second sojourn to Switzerland in a series of letters to William Melmoth, a popular English lawyer and religious writer. Coxe intended this work to be an expansion of an earlier book entitled Sketches on the natural, civil, and political state of Switzerland (London, 1779), his intention to bring to light the delightful and picturesque landscape of the country and to facilitate a greater interest in tourism. A skilled writer, historian, clergyman, and occasional physician, Coxe (1747-1828) produced numerous travel narratives and memoirs of various members of the English nobility during his time as a traveling companion and tutor to Lord Herbert (son of the Earl of Pembroke) and Samuel Whitbread. He was also appointed rector of Bemerton, and was a member of the Imperial Oeconomical Society at St. Petersburg and of the Royal Academy of Sciences. The two maps that are present in the London edition (first printed the same year) were apparently never inserted into this Dublin edition, according to our research and survey. The first volume here contains the original list of maps and plates (with page numbers corresponding to the London edition); a list of plates in Volume II corrects the page numbers.

William Coxe
T Cadell, London 1789 - A fair copy of the 1st edition in 3 volumes. Classed as 'fair' because the contemporary full calf bindings are very worn, and because the map of Switzerland from Vol I is absent. William Coxe was a historian and priest who travelled widely - mainly as a tutor and companion to the wealthy. He was a keen observer who wrote and later published detailed accounts of his travels. In Travels in Switzerland he provides both detail on scenery, flora and fauna, and on history and social issues. This copy is in contemporary calf. Vol II has a replacement plain spine of the 'do it yourself' variety; Vols I looks to have a newer spine aged to match the original; Vol III has the original spine with title labels and gilt compartments. All the boards are present, but the front board is detached in Vol III. The contents are in very good clean condition and all the plates are present, together with the large fold out map of Mont Blanc. Vol I: lacks fep and preliminaries; title page with ink signature to top; dedication; preface; contents; text pp 1-428 with 2 plates. Clean - light marking to bottom margin pp 16-21 and small dark mark in side margin pp 269-71. Vol II: title page with signature; dedication; map and plate list; contents; large fold out Mont Blanc; text pp 1-398 with 2 plates - one folding (bearded Vulture); Appendix pp 401-408; Supplement pp 409-422; errata to all 3 vols. Clean - some spotting pp 210-321. Small repair to fold out Mont Blanc where attached to the book. Vol III: title page with signature; dedication; introduction; contents; text pp 1-329 w … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINT-JUST (Louis-Antoine de);

The best and most complete editon of this work which forced the author into exile while his property was confiscated.Jean Baptiste Claude Isouard, writing as Delisle de Sales, published in 1766 his De la Philosophie de la Nature which caused a scandal for professing atheism and nihilism. The work was condamned to be burned, the author imprisoned and the censor exiled. Delisle filed for appeal and was supported by the whole circle of the philosophes who saw in him the champion of the liberty of thought and expression. The trial became a "cause célébre" in Europe: instead of an attack on the philosophes in general, which was the hidden agenda of the magistrates and Jansenists, the reading public appeared sympathetic to the ideas of the philosophes and turned Delisle's book into one of the greatest bestsellers of the century and made him an international celebrity. The magistrates and Parlement became the source of ridicule and outcry: swallowing the bitter pill, Parlement suspended Delisle's banishment and granted amnesty in 1777. The first edition of only three volumes was pub … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Jefferson
The law made a nod towards opponents by lowering some duties on whiskey, but set up a stringent enforcement scheme that would just two years later result in an uprising in Western Pennsylvania Putting down the Whiskey Rebellion was the first demonstration that the Federal government could maintain control and authority within state boundaries As part of the compromises that led to the adoption of the U.S. Constitution in 1789, the new Federal government agreed to assume the Revolutionary War debts of the 13 States. To help pay for this newly-assumed debt, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton proposed an excise tax on domestically produced whiskey in his “Report Relative to a Provision for the Support of Public Credit,” which he submitted to Congress in 1790. In early 1791, Congress used its new constitutional authority to "lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises" and passed the first nationwide internal revenue tax—an excise tax on distilled spirits. Unlike tariffs paid on goods imported into the United States, the excise tax on distilled spirits was a direct tax on Americans who produced whiskey and other alcohol spirits. The 1791 excise law set a varying 6 to 18-cent per gallon tax rate, with smaller distillers often paying more than twice per gallon what larger producers paid. All payments had to be made in cash to the Federal revenue officer appointed for the distiller's county. Large, commercial distillers in the eastern United States generally accepted the new excise tax since they could pass its cost onto their cash-paying customers.
