GARVE (Christian)

REDE, Leman Thomas (1754/55 - 1810)]
printed for J. Debrett, J. Sewell, R. Baldwin & J. Bew and E. Harlowe, London, 1789. [4],271pp. 19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Corners worn, spine rubbed. Old stamp on titlepage with bleedthrough to first few leaves, some tanning, occasional fox marks. First edition of this important work on early printed and manuscript Americana, with a valuable introductory essay This anonymous work has in the past been ascribed variously to "[Alexander] Dalrymple, Homer, Long, and Reid" (Church), but is now known to have been written by the miscellaneous writer Leman Thomas Rede, a student of the Middle Temple (cf. Stuart C. Sherman The William and Mary Quarterly , 3rd Ser., Vol. 4, No. 3 (Jul., 1947), pp. 332-349). According to the title Rede compiled the work from the holdings of the British Museum "and the most celebrated public and private libraries, reviews, catalogues, &c.". It is of particular value as it includes manuscript material in addition to printed works, and also for the 17pp. "Introductory Discourse on the State of Literature in North and South America," which includes musings on the benefits of freedom of the press to the development of "Genius," as well as interesting details of bookselling in the United States. The demand was for small format works on practical matters; imported books were generally cheaper than home-produced editions (even with the hefty premiums that booksellers were able to place on the imports) because of the cost of materials and printers' wages. CONSTANTINI (Antoine)
Paris, Baudouin, 1789. Martin & Walter, I, 8172). [FETES / MALLORCA IMPRINTS]
1789. Extremely rare first and sole edition of this Mallorcan festival book commemorating the festivities held in Palma on the occasion of Charles IV’s accession to the throne. The description, with its careful lists of the noblemen involved, constitutes a snapshot of Mallorcan society at the end of the eighteenth century. The work is illustrated with two plates, one a plan of the central square with the arrangement of ephemeral architecture and decorations, the other a very large plate (49.5 x 33 cm overall, 42.5 x 32 cm to platemark) depicting the triumphal arc erected in honor of the new sovereign, with his arms above those of Palma de Mallorca. The author estimates that between 34,000 and 38,000 citizens took part in the celebration, with gentlemen on horseback dressed à la española antigua and ladies in such splendid finery that it “filled the spirit with extasty.” (B2r) The central square was festively decorated with and portraits of the king and queen to which the assembled paid solemn respects.Mallorca had seen a growth in trade and prosperity under Charles III thanks to his policies of liberalizing trade with America. Churches and monasteries were brought under the aegis of the Spanish crown, and the first postal service was created. The accession of his famously weak son at the very time of revolutionary unrest in France would have been a source of worry.Although printing began on Mallorca in the late sixteenth century, work with the Palma imprint are rarely seen on the market.OCLC lists a single copy, University of Connecticut*Palau II.35,402;. 4 … [Click Below for Full Description]

GEORGE WASHINGTON
1789. No binding. Fine. Autograph Manuscript, Pages 27-28, 35-36, and 47-48 of Washington's own draft of his undelivered inaugural address. [written ca. January 1789]. 6 pp. on 3 leaves, 7 x 9 in. ""This Constitution, is really in its formation a government of the people""George Washington understood that the new government's success, as had the Constitutional Convention's, rested squarely on his shoulders. He also knew that everything he did as the first president would set precedents for future generations. He wrote privately about the promise, ambiguity, and tension of high office, and these same themes are woven throughout his original, undelivered inaugural address. Would the government work as intended, or suffer death from a thousand cuts? Still, the former Commander in Chief recognized the nation's potential, as well as the honorable men who had come together to build the Constitution. The three unique leaves-six pages-offered here are written entirely in Washington's hand. They include assertions that government power is derived from the people, and a highly significant section of the Address explicitly arguing that the Constitution is subject to amendment and, by implication, advocating the adoption of the Bill of Rights. They also include the oratorical climax of the address-arguably the most visionary and impassioned passage of the address. *Note: Price above includes additional items, please inquire*In the first leaf offered here, pages 27 and 28, Washington reasserts the Jeffersonian notion of the power being derived from the people:Although the agency I had … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONSTANTINI (Antoine)
Paris, Baudouin, 1789. Martin & Walter, I, 8172).

[WEYMOUTH]
Weymouth: Printed for the Editor. Sold at the Library in St. Thomas's Street..., [1789]. 112pp. With lithographed frontispiece view of Weymouth Bay and an engraved folding plate of Sandsfoot Castle. Stitched within original marbled wraps. Slight creasing, some loss to spine. With the bookplate of Lord Walsingham to FEP. The second of three eighteenth-century editions of The Weymouth Guide, this, by far the scarcest, was the first to contain plates. Intended to include what the editor 'conceives most useful to Parties who visit the place for the benefit of AIR, and for SEA BATHING; to whom, as well as to PARTIES OF PLEASURE, it is hoped this little narrative will prove an useful as well as an entertaining companion. A 25pp section on the 'present state of Weymouth' reveals the eighteenth-century origins of the town as a resort, including all seven 'Rules and Orders' of the public rooms, with 'IV. That no Lady or Gentleman be permitted to dance in coloured gloves (italics!)' and 'VIII. That Gentlemen will be pleased to leave their swords (italics!) at the door' particularly anachronistic highlights. Detail of 'The Library, in St. Thomas Street', from where this work was obtainable within the town itself, suggests a well-patronised subscription establishment: 'established upwards of sixteen years...[containing] above eight thousand volumes (italics!), in English, French, Italian &c. which may be read on the following easy terms, viz. Garnier, Charles Georges Thomas (ed)]
Rue et Hotel Serpente, 1787- 89 [and:] Paris: Chez Cuchet, Amsterdam, et se trouve à Paris, 1789. Thirty-nine volumes. Octavo. Uniformly bound in contemporary black calf, spines heavily gilt, contrasting red and orange gilt lettering pieces, with gilt crests and bookplates of Cumming Gordon of Alytr. Seventy-six engraved plates plus a folding table. Spines a bit sunned, some rubbing and occasional short cracks at crowns and toes of spines, a few occasional scratches to the boards, but a very good, handsome set. The first edition, complete, of the first attempt to assemble a coherent collection of the texts of imaginary voyages from the literatures of several languages. As proper, the main set is concluded by the new three volume edition of Deperthes's work, with a half-title to each volume denoting its supplementary relationship to Garnier's work. The notable illustrations are engravings after Clement Pierre Marillier. The text includes over seventy separate titles, ranging from the established and well known works of Defoe, Swift, Paltock, Mercier, Berington and Longueville, to many obscure and anonymous works. Garnier's inclusion of some works, such as Sterne's VÒYAGE SENTIMENTAL., or works that later proved literal, has of course been faulted, but the foundation he laid, and the texts he brought forward from obscurity, facilitated the future of scholarship related to the genre, including such works as Gove's THE IMAGINARY VOYAGE IN PROSE FICTION, wherein over thirty pages are devoted to consideration of Garnier's accomplishment. BAFFO GIORGIO.
Cosmopoli (Venezia), 1789. G.F. Torcellan, DBI 5 (1963).
