KUSAZÔSHI] Torii Kiyotsune, artist
1789. [KUSAZÔSHI] Torii Kiyotsune, artist. Higashi no Hime Nishi no Hime AMEWAKAMIKO. N.P., N.D. [An'ei 8 {1779} Nishimuraya]. 17.2 x 12.5 cm. This little 3 volume b+w woodblock printed kibyôshi story book was part of the revolution in vernacular literature taking place in the mid to late 18th century in Japan. As the potential audience for stories expanded and the desire for skillful illustrations kept pace, such skilled artists as Santô Kyôden, and Kiyotsune provided visual content and sometimes the textual content as well. Between them they published 100s of the little story books, which, unfortunately, have not been systematically preserved. One runs across the occasional odd volume, in wretched condition, but the KSSM is largely empty of kusazôshi holdings. Interestingly, both Kiyonaga and Kiyotsune were disciples of the last great traditional Torii master, Torii Kiyomitsu. Kiyonaga changed his style over time to reflect the greater popularity of the nishikie brocade prints of Harunobu and others, while the more conservative Kiyotsune hewed more closely to the Torii style - more vigorous if a bit more awkward. That said, Kiyotsune pursued his career in kibyôshi illustration for decades. [May I refer you to a wonderful Master's Thesis written by Jason Heuer at UMASS Amherst: REIMAGINING TORII KIYOTSUNE AS A KIBYÔSHI ARTIST - 2012 - it can be found online]. Our copy is better than most of the genre in that it is complete. (Paris) 1789. They put it up for sale by means of the above catalogue, a shortened translation and adaptation of Morelli's, by Samuel Paterson (1728-1802), another London bookseller and auctioneer. TAMBA GENTOKU
[n.p.], 1789. Approximately 300 double pages, including nearly 150 woodblock illustrations. Original wrappers with printed labels; interior with minor browning and occasional wormholes, otherwise a fine and complete copy preserved in a folding box. Probably one of the earliest illustrated accounts of Japanese medicine, compiled by the famous court physician Tamba Gentoku, also known as Taki Angen. The work is intended to promulgate medical knowledge among the common people, describing how to remedy maladies of various kinds without the aide of a physician. The illustrations, many botanical in nature, cover every phase of emergency treatment, including revival of the drowned or intoxicated by artificial respiration and treatment by massage (see illustrations in Castiglioni in his History of Medicine). Of particular interest is an illustration of the most famous of all moxa spots ("sanri"), located on the antero-lateral aspect of the (left) leg, with detailed directions on how to "know" it. Among the many aspects of emergency medicine, the author treats the following: Vol. I. Loss of consciousness, including apoplexy, sexual intercourse, paralysis, sunstroke, cholera, epilepsy, intoxication, etc.; Vol. II Vomiting blood, blood in urine, jaundice, deafness, obstructed urethra, lockjaw, wounds, cuts, contususions, eye injury, scalds and burns, frostbite, etc.; Vol. III. Death and violent death, suffocation, starvation, hanging, drowning, freezing and lightning, foreign objects in parts of the body, accidental poising, plants, grains, alcohol and ptomaine, prenatal emergencies, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Portlock, Nathaniel.
John Stockdale and Geo. Goulding, London. London: John Stockdale and Geo. Goulding, 1789. 1st edition. 4to. Tall copy. (12" x 9.5"). ii + 384pp + xl. 14 engraved plates (including frontispiece portrait), large folding map and 5 folding charts. Very light spotting. Uncommonly crisp. Early marbled tree calf, with maritime theme tooling on spine. Sympathetically re-backed. 2 armorial bookplates, including that of Lord Braybrooke. The King George's Sound Company was formed in London in May 1785 for the purposes of fur trading on the Northwest coast of America. It purchased two ships, renamed the King George (commanded by the chief of the expedition Captain Portlock) and Queen Charlotte (commanded by Captain George Dixon). Both men had accompanied Captain Cook on his last voyage and visited the Northwest coast with him. Sailing from England the two ships arrived at Cook's River in July 1786, where they found a summer settlement of Russian hunters. Portlock's account is valued for descriptions of local conditions and observations of indigenous people, with details of their customs. "During my stay amongst the Russians, they were all very busily employed. Some were dressing green sea otter skins, others repairing their boats, and cleaning arms. Most of the Indians were out on a hunting party; the few left behind were busied in fitting darts to their spears, and making snuff from tobacco, of which they seem very fond, and their women in cooking and repairing canoes." The furs that Portlock and Dixon acquired were sold in Macao; they then proceeded to England with a consignment of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOWARD, John
1789 1ed PRISONS Lazarettos PLAGUE Hospitals Insanity Castles Illustrated Howard One of the first published, illustrated public health records! Known mostly for his philanthropic endeavors as a prison reformer, John Howard was an English scholar who sought to improve the public health conditions around Europe. He published two major works that focused on the well-being of individuals traveling and those needing care. This work, ‘An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe’, is an investigation of said lazarettos and European quarantine houses, specific to those used during the height of the plague. He also provides the latest inspection concerns with Irish, British, and Scottish prisons. Howard was determined to give accurate descriptions of these establishments. When he was denied access into a lazaretto in Venice, he bought a boat ticket to the city with the qualifier that he was in ‘foul health’ just so he could be admitted into the building to get a precise measure of the conditions. This work is illustrated with truly remarkable engravings depicting castles, hospitals, lazarettos, and maps of such places. In addition to the 23 incredible full-page and folding engravings, this work features a table of the names of prisoners who were sentenced to death or exile from 1749-1771 by Stephen Janssen. Item number: #3362 Price: $950 HOWARD, John An account of the principal lazarettos in Europe : with various papers relative to the plague : together with further observations on some foreign prisons and hospitals : and additional remarks on the present state of those in Grea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edo: Juzaburo Tsutaya, 1789. First edition of perhaps the greatest of all Japanese illustrated books. "Even among Japanese books, the 'Shell Book' must be considered remarkable, hardly another has quite the same concinnity of subject, text and illustration...Its title is a poetic one that strikes the chord for the whole work - Shiohi no tsuto - 'Gifts of the Ebb-tide.' The poems were contributed by the members of a poetry club... "After the foreword, comes the first print which is introductory to the main theme, the shells themselves. It is a picture of people gathering shells along Shinagawa bay at ebb-tide, and what more charming beach scene exists in art? The retreating sea, indicated by the most fragile washes of ultramarine, is ribbed with a perfectly apt blind-printing that casts minute shadows like shallow wavelets... "Then follow six [double-]pages that are designed to bring our eyes closer to the shells, as though on some propitious day the tide had been unusually prodigal and strewn the sand with a hoard of different treasures. The sea, receding to the top of each page in wine-coloured lines of conventional wave form [a characteristic of the third edition and not pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Craven, Baroness Elizabeth]
Paris: Durand, 1789. First Thus. The first French translation, released in Craven's adopted country in the same year as the English. Bound in contemporary mottled calf with gilt to spine. Octavo is internally clean and collates complete: 306 pages, including one folding engraved map and 6 folding engraved illustrations. Royal censor's authorization (Privilege du Roi) at rear. A lovely copy of this rare and early women's travel narrative. OCLC reportz copies of this imprint in only two institutions. Baroness Elizabeth Craven became infamous for separating from her husband to settle in France. Soon after, she became renowned for sailing to Constantinople and journeying throughout eastern Europe. She recorded her experiences in far off lands and published them in French and English in 1789. "Crossing the Continent, Eastern Europe, and reaching the Middle East caused Lady Craven to encounter people she had never met, to discover landscapes she had never seen and manners she was not used to. The accounts she gives of her experience are a wealth of information on her general perception of the unknown and her personal evolution in the course of this journey" (Palma). The journey positioned Craven as an a frontrunner among women adventurers, at a time when educated women's travel was largely limited to Western Europe. And the publication of her astute social observations opened the door to a literary reputation that placed her in a circle with luminaries including Samuel Johnson and Horace Walpole. An important early example of women's travel literature. Near Fine. Near Fine.

Portlock, Nathaniel
London: Printed for John Stockdale and George Goulding, 1789. xii,384,xl pp. Twenty engraved plates, charts, and maps (six folding charts or maps, two engraved portraits, twelve engraved plates [the five ornithological plates with contemporary hand-coloring, as issued]). Quarto. Contemporary tree calf, gilt, spine gilt, black morocco label, marbled endpapers. Very good. Provenance: Frederick E. Ellis (signature on title, bookplate); Martin L. Greene (book label). Rare deluxe issue, with handcolored plates, of the first edition of a classic narrative of the early exploration on the Northwest Coast. Portlock, a veteran of Cook's third voyage, and Dixon were sent by the King George's Sound Company to the Northwest coast of North America to investigate the economic possibilities of the fur trade there. En route they had a long stay in Hawaii, and Portlock's narrative of this visit is of particular interest since Portlock and Dixon were the first captains to visit the Hawaiian islands since the death of Cook. He gives an important account of the situation there, already much altered by European contact. The voyage then proceeded to the Northwest to survey the region. Portlock and Dixon separated, with Portlock exploring northward up the Alaskan coast and Dixon proceeding southward to Nootka Sound. Both Dixon and Portlock published accounts of the voyage, but Portlock is of greater value for his particularly vivid descriptions of the Native Americans and Russians in the region. In addition to the lively narrative, the work is well illustrated with twenty plates and maps: th … [Click Below for Full Description]

With him on that trip was another young British officer, George Dixon. In 1785 the two men traveled to the north Pacific. Portlock commanded the 1785-1788 expedition from the ship King George while Dixon captained the Queen Charlotte. The purpose of the expedition was to investigate the potential of the Alaskan fur trade and to resume Cook's search for a Northwest Passage through the continent. The pair left England on August 29, 1785, and took nearly a year to reach Alaska, rounding Cape Horn and touching at Hawaii on the way. They charted the Alaskan coast until winter forced them back to Hawaii. In the spring of 1787 they headed north again, reaching the Kenai Peninsula from which Dixon explored southward while Portlock traded for furs. They wintered again in Hawaii be … [Click Below for Full Description]
