SCOTT DE MARTINVILLE
Paris, Maradan, 1789. ______ Format : In-8. Collation : XVI, 154, (5) pp., 2 planches h.-t. Bel exemplaire. *-------* First edition. Illustrated by two large folding plates. Scott de Martinville envisioned a fish-shaped balloon. Like a ship on water, this airship should have a definite bow and stern and be longer than it was wide. The most original feature of Scott's design was the introduction of two "ballonets", or air pockets, at either end which could be inflated or deflated to increase the buoyancy at opposite ends of the balloon. Scott thought this feature would enable the ballonets to achieve an incline for ascent or descent which would increase the forward motion. This project was not executed because of the French Revolution.

In the same year he was made chaplain to the provincial congress of Massachusetts. In early 1776 he was dismissed from both houses after delivering a harsh attack on article 5 of the articles of confederation" (ODNB) He returned to London in 1786. Gordon had decided to write a history of the events he witnessed in North America, and in 1776 he "began collecting correspondence and interviewing military officers and statesmen. [Click Below for Full Description]

DRUMMOND DE MELFORT (comte Louis Hector).
Paris, [Paris]: 1789. voir descriptif. DRUMMOND DE MELFORT (comte Louis Hector). Traité de Cavalerie. Paris, Nyon et Firmin Didot, s.d. [1789]; Atlas, slnd, [Paris, Guillaume Desprez, 1776 ?]. [Click Below for Full Description]

This was one of a series of four views of the great London squares, the others being Hanover Square, Grosvenor Square and Queen Square. According to the note bottom left 'The outline sketched by R. Thew, with an instrument', before being etched and and published by Robert Pollard and Francis Jukes.

Thomas Lloyd
New York: Printed for the Editor by Harrison and PUrdy. Condition: Good. First edition, 1789, of the first volume of what would eventually be a four volume set, this covering the First Session from early March to June 19, 1789. 8vo, contemporary sheep. Good to very good copy, some neat strengthening of the outer joints and front inner hinge strengthened with rice paper, contents very good, one word marked ('manufacturing') on p. 78 with a note of two words on the margin, proabably by the first owner of this, whose name is Young (so given on the title page). Binding otherwise OK, half of original red spine label gone. 614 pp, 2 pp. of errata, 2 pages of ads. At the gutters of most pages one can see a few pinholes - evidence that these were at some point bound in wraps. Evans says that a these did indeed come out in parts, a total of 37, each issued in blue wraps, thus, the stab marks in the inner gutter are either evidence of having been disbound from copies in parts or prepared for such stitching but instead used for the bound copies. This volume has not appeared at auction since 1984. Repleat with the contributions of our Founding Fathers, with much by Madison, small contributions by George Washington, and many other lesser known luminaries, all set on the minutiae of running a country -- taxes, regulations, economy, tariffs, diplomacy, etc. Evans 22203. HOWARD, John
1789. One of the first published, illustrated public health records! Known mostly for his philanthropic endeavors as a prison reformer, John Howard was an English scholar who sought to improve the public health conditions around Europe. He published two major works that focused on the well-being of individuals traveling and those needing care. This work, 'An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe', is an investigation of said lazarettos and European quarantine houses, specific to those used during the height of the plague. He also provides the latest inspection concerns with Irish, British, and Scottish prisons. Howard was determined to give accurate descriptions of these establishments. When he was denied access into a lazaretto in Venice, he bought a boat ticket to the city with the qualifier that he was in 'foul health' just so he could be admitted into the building to get a precise measure of the conditions. This work is illustrated with truly remarkable engravings depicting castles, hospitals, lazarettos, and maps of such places. In addition to the 23 incredible full-page and folding engravings, this work features a table of the names of prisoners who were sentenced to death or exile from 1749-1771 by Stephen Janssen.
