Bussy-Rabutin
Bon exemplaire. Complet. Bussy-Rabutin. A Londres [Paris, J.-Fr.

GEORGE WASHINGTON
Newspaper. The Maryland Gazette; or, the Baltimore Advertiser, May 8, 1789. Baltimore, Maryland: John Hayes. 4 pp., 11 x 16 3/4 in. "the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered, perhaps, as deeply, as finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people."Washington and James Madison spent considerable time together in December 1788, mapping strategy for the new government. Washington then entrusted to Madison a 73-page draft of his inaugural address, encouraging Madison to edit it. Instead, Madison rewrote the entire speech. Although we now recognize Washington's own draft as his most extensive and best political manifesto, he immediately realized that Madison's much shorter address was more appropriate and politically expedient for the occasion, and it was Madison's version that he would deliver. Land-rich and cash-poor, George Washington borrowed £625 in Maryland currency before leaving Mount Vernon for the new capital to pay his debts in Alexandria and to fund his journey.[1] With great fanfare along the way, Washington arrived in New York on April 23. After a week of making arrangements in consultation with Congress, Washington took the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall on April 30.[2] He then went inside to give his inaugural address in the Senate chamber, printed in full in this original newspaper.Excerpts:"No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Condition: Like New. Transatlantic Circulation of Novels Between Europe and Brazil, 1789-1914, Hardcover by Abreu, Márcia (EDT), ISBN 3319468367, ISBN-13 9783319468365 This book brings a renewed critical focus to the history of novel writing, publishing, selling and reading, expanding its viewing beyond national territories. Relying on primary sources (such as advertisements, censorship reviews, publisher and bookstore catalogues), the book examines the paths taken by novels in their shifts between Europe and Brazil, investigates the flow of translations in both directions, pays attention to the successful novels of the time and analyses the critical response to fiction in both sides of the Atlantic. It reveals that neither nineteenth century culture can be properly understood by focusing on a single territory, nor literature can be fully perceived by looking only to the texts, ignoring their material existence and their place in social and economical practices.

London,: Publish'd by J. & J. Boydell, Cheapside and at the Shakspeare Gallery, Pall Mall, 1789. London,: Publish'd by J. & J. Boydell, Cheapside and at the Shakspeare Gallery, Pall Mall,, 1789.. This View is taken from the Thames, opposite the New Offices looking down the River, and comprehends what is generally called the Old Ground. Engraving with aquatint and original hand colour. The Woolwich Dockyard was founded by Henry VIII in 1512. It quickly became the centre of shipbuilding in the country, expanding to include a ropeyard and an ammunition store. The print was made just before the yard saw a resurgence in production during the Napoleonic Wars, which required renewed naval strength from Britain. Unfortunately, even during the reign of James I Woolwich's location began to cause problems. The silting of the Thames prevented the launch of James's warship Royal Prince. By 1869 the Royal Dockyard was closed. The Boydells published three other plates of royal dockyards in the same year. Robert Dodd (1748–1815) was a British marine painter and aquatint engraver, known particularly for his great depictions of the naval battles of the Napoleonic Wars. BM 1877,0609.1745.

Portlock, Nathaniel
London: Printed for John Stockdale and George Goulding, 1789. xii,384,xl pp. plus six folding maps, two portraits (including frontispiece) and twelve plates. Large quarto. 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands. Extremities rubbed, small private shelf mark at bottom of spine, modern bookplate on front pastedown. Occasional light marginal foxing, mild offsetting from plates. Very good. Portlock, a veteran of Cook's third voyage, and Dixon were sent by the King George's Sound Company to the Northwest coast of North America to investigate the economic possibilities of the fur trade there. En route they had a long stay in Hawaii, and Portlock's narrative of this visit is of particular interest since Portlock and Dixon were the first captains to visit the Hawaiian islands since the death of Cook. He gives an important account of the situation there, already much altered by European contact. The voyage then proceeded to the Northwest to survey the region. Portlock and Dixon separated, with Portlock exploring northward up the Alaskan coast and Dixon proceeding southward to Nootka Sound. Both Dixon and Portlock published accounts of the voyage, but Portlock is of greater value for his particularly vivid descriptions of the Native Americans and Russians in the region. There is a general map of the Northwest Coast and five maps of particular harbors along the Coast, all listed by Wagner. Of special interest are the five plates of birds, here in the uncolored state. Dalrymple, Alexander.
1789. 4to. (2), VI, 60 pp. Stitched, untrimmed. A rare set of "remarks" concerning the Gaspar Straits and the east coast of Bangka Island, published by Dalrymple from the log of the East Indiaman Carnatic. A fascinating insight into the workings of Dalrymple and the East India Company. - As hydrographer to the East India Company from 1785, Alexander Dalrymple continually sought to update and correct the charts and pilots used by the Company's captains. To this end he sought the log books and observations of many of the voyages that took place between England and China, especially where they had detailed records of the China Seas and the approaches to it. Sometimes Dalrymple would request log books from the Company or the ship's captain, or as in the present work, the captain, Lestock Wilson, has taken the liberty of contacting Dalrymple himself. Dalrymple goes so far as to publish the correspondence at the beginning of the present work. - The observations and charts made by Captain Wilson so impressed Dalrymple that he not only included them in his chart of the area and published the present sailing directions, but also persuaded the East India Company to allow Wilson, now in command to the EIS (East India Ship) Vansittart, to carry out more detailed surveying of the area on his next voyage. Again Dalrymple publishes the Court of Directors minutes regarding Wilson's commission at the beginning of the present work. The decision by the Court of Directors to allow one of their ships to delay their journey to China in order to carry out surveying work was highly unusual. In fac … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE FRENCH CONSTITUTION. - [HUMAN RIGHTS DECLARATION]
Paris, Didot Jeune, Chez Garnery, 1791. 12mo. Orig. wrappers, all edges uncut. Front wrapper partly mounted. Some tears and lack to back, thus a bit loose. Internally only minor brownspotting. 160 pp. ¶ First pocket-edition of the highly influential French Constitution. The Constitution was first printed in folio the same year as this one, and the 12-mo-edition is the first edition to follow after that in folio. The pocket-edition was probably the first meant for the public. The Constitution of 1791 is the fruit of the labours of the French National Constituent Assembly which sat from the summer of 1789 to September 1791 and included amongst its members some of France's foremost men, including Mirabeau, Sieyès and Condorcet. It is a document of enormous historical and symbolic importance, which owes the sway that it holds over our political unconscious less to the (ill-fated) political order it established than to the will to erect a new political order, of which it was the expression. The constitution itself was only short-lived. Voted on September 3rd, 1791, it was effectively brought to an end on August 10th, 1792, when insurgents from the Paris Commune invaded the Tuileries and suspended the king. The Constitution was - in the words of French historian Francois Furet - an ephemeral work, but one which has not ceased to haunt all the French constitutions that have followed in its wake. Unknown to most, the Constitution of 1791 did not entail a complete break with l'Ancien Régime. In fact, the political order envisaged by the Assembly was a form of constitutional monarchy. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elizabeth Berkeley Craven
printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1789. First edition, 4to, pp. [8], 327, [1]; folding map and 6 plates (1 folding); contemporary half quarter tan calf over marbled boards, neatly rebacked and recased, maroon morocco label on gilt-paneled spine; the spine a little sunned, else very good and sound. Lady Craven (1750-1828) was an author and playwright as well as an acquaintance of both Boswell and Johnson. She was also, apparently, a bit of a floozy, having had several scandalous affairs, including a "criminal intercourse" with the French ambassador in London. Having separated from Lord Craven in 1783, she traveled extensively in France, Italy, Austria, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Greece and Turkey. This book is an account of these travels, published at the suggestion of her friend and admirer, Horace Walpole. The ODNB notes that this is her most important work, "and it exploits to the full the gossipy and self-vindicating scope of first-person travelogue. She describes manners, customs, and landscapes, and pronounces Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's favourable account of Turkey a forgery, and constructs a self-image of redoubtable British vigour as well as devoted and injured motherhood." New-York : Printed by Hodge, Allen, and Campbell; and sold at their respective book-stores, M. DCC. LXXXIX. [1789]. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. SIGNED in period ink on the title page by Joseph Brevard (see pics and bio below). South Carolina Revolutionary War soldier, jurist and Congressman. Volume 2 only. 8vo. [11], 26-474, [2] p., 1 folded leaf of plates. Full leather with gilt title on leather spine label. Folding map frontispiece (see pic). First American edition, published the year after the London edition. "First full-scale history of this war by an American" (Howes). Born in Hertfordshire in 1727/8, Gordon was educated for the dissenting ministry and ordained in 1754. In 1770 "his political sympathies prompted him to move to America, where he lived for about fifteen years. In 1772 he was pastor of the Third Congregational Church at Roxbury, Massachusetts. In the same year he was made chaplain to the provincial congress of Massachusetts. In early 1776 he was dismissed from both houses after delivering a harsh attack on article 5 of the articles of confederation" (ODNB) He returned to London in 1786. Gordon had decided to write a history of the events he witnessed in North America, and in 1776 he "began collecting correspondence and interviewing military officers and statesmen. He believed that the new republic would not be receptive to an impartial history and so hoped to have better success in England. His History of the Rise, Progress, and Establishment of the Independence of the United States of America first appeared in London in 1788 and in an American edition the fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

1789. Its Productions, Inhabitants, &c. To which is subjoined, A List of the Civil and Military Establishments at Port Jackson. First edition. 8vo. Full red morocco, elaborately gilt, lacking the half title & ad, some minor toning and soiling. viii, 148pp. London, J. Debrett, Watkin Tench [1758?-1833] entered the Marines in 1776, and fought in the American War of Independence rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his promotion to Captain, Tench volunteered to serve in the proposed Colony of New South Wales and travelled on board the transport Charlotte arriving at Botany Bay in 1788. An acute and perceptive observer, he took careful note of the new experiences provided by the Australian continent and his fellows' reactions to it. When not writing these down, Tench lead several expeditions into the interior, discovering amongst other things the Dawes river, which he traced to the Hawkesbury. His attempt to conquer the Blue Mountains however failed, the expedition having to turn back at the Razorback. Tench's book was an immediate success with the public, and ran to three editions in England during 1789. ?Our author's modest preface, and unassuming manner through the whole of this little work, entitle him to our attention and regard? WEBBER, John.
London J. Webber No. 312 Oxford Street July 1st, 1789. Soft ground etching, with hand-colouring, 405 x 318mm (trimmed to plate mark), mounted. One of the most well-known images from the earlier issue of Webber's Views in the South Seas. The body lying in state was that of a young chief by the name of Vehiatua, from the Taiarapu peninsula on the East of the island of Tahiti. He died after a long illness in October 1775, and Cook and his party would have viewed his corpse after it had lain for nearly two years in the ghost house (fare Tupapa'u) adjacent to Vaiotaha, the most important Marae (temple) on the peninsula. The length of time the body lay before burial indicates the chief's high status. Joppien and Smith quote an account by Cook, in which he records that some of the gentlemen of his party came across the fare Tupapa'u where the body of the chief was lying in state on their walks and mistook it for a chapel. Beddie, 1871.

London: T Bensley; J Johnson, 1789. This work comprises of 633 aphorisms by John Casper Lavater. William Blake was known to annotate and translate Lavater's aphorisms in 1788, where he noted that number 30 was an excellent example of an aphorism; 'Who, under pressing temptations to lie, adheres to truth, nor to the profane betrays aught of a sacred trust, is near the summit of wisdom and virtue'. The frontispiece of this work is by Blake, who was an English poet, painter and printmaker. ESTC no. T137191 The ESTC notes that A second volume of the 'Vermischte unphysiognomische' was published in 1788, but was not translated into English. Portlock, Nathaniel
London: Printed for John Stockdale ... and George Goulding, [1789]. First edition. Embellished with Twenty Copper Plates (including 6 folding maps). xii, 384, xl pp. 1 vols. 4to. Portlock and Dixon, captains of the ships King George and Queen Charlotte, set out on behalf of the King George's Sound Company to establish a trade in furs on the northwest coast of America, especially otter furs. Their major accomplishment was the mapping of the coastline, especially their improvement of some of James Cook's maps. Portlock sailed north along the Alaskan coast, while Dixon proceeded south. This book describes the Pacific as well as Alaska, as the two captains kept separate logs, and the copper plates and folding maps were well-regarded at the time of publication. Watts, Isaac
Philadelphia: Printed for Thomas Dobson, at the Stone House, in Second Street, 1789. First American edition (stated sixteenth edition on title page). x, 13-348 pp (lacks blank preceding Introduction). 1 vols. 12mo. The Straw Man Fallacy. First published in England in 1725, this is the first printing in America of Watts' first important work; it ultimately became extremely influential in universities and America well through the first half of the 19th century. As an interesting sidenote, Watts, in describing the particular sophism known as the 'straw man", was the first the use the word 'straw" in describing it. At p. 303, he writes: "...and when they have with a great deal of pomp attacked and confoundedthese images of straw of their own making, they triumph over their adversary as if they had confounded his position." A very scarce and important book. Evans 22246. Modern full crushed brown levant. Bookplate. Title page somewhat soiled and reapirs at inner margin, some minor dampstaining to text, leaf G2 (pp. 79-80) defective, with loss of lower corner and several words of text; overall a good, sound copy of a very scarce book.

SCOTT DE MARTINVILLE
Paris, Maradan, 1789. ______ Format : In-8. Collation : XVI, 154, (5) pp., 2 planches h.-t. Bel exemplaire. *-------* First edition. Illustrated by two large folding plates. Scott de Martinville envisioned a fish-shaped balloon. Like a ship on water, this airship should have a definite bow and stern and be longer than it was wide. The most original feature of Scott's design was the introduction of two "ballonets", or air pockets, at either end which could be inflated or deflated to increase the buoyancy at opposite ends of the balloon. Scott thought this feature would enable the ballonets to achieve an incline for ascent or descent which would increase the forward motion. This project was not executed because of the French Revolution.
