Proceedings of the National Democratic and Republican Party Conventions to Elect a President and Vice President of the United States Spanning the Years 1832-2008: Being a Collection of the Official Reports Resulting in the Nomination of Candidates Who Went on to Win, or Lose the White House: A Record of the National Issues Confronting the United States over 176 Years.

The process for nominating and electing a president has evolved since 1789 and continues to do so today. The caucus system was followed by the convention system starting in 1831. Political scientist V.O. Key, Jr. wrote, ?The new system, the convention, gave, or so it was supposed, the mass of party members an opportunity to participate in nominations.?  With the national convention came the emergence of the two-party system that we know today. The Democrats since 1832 and the Republicans since 1856 have used the convention system to nominate their candidates for president. You need to look no further than the presidential election this year to know the importance of national presidential nominating conventions. The proceedings of these conventions are essential to understanding what took place at each convention. The reports on the proceedings of 79 national Democratic and Republican conventions that resulted in the nomination of presidential and vice presidential candidates. A detailed list is available.

Three manuscript catalogues, all highly legible, of the library at Schloss Arenfels, near Bad Honningen in the Rhineland

The earliest is dated 1789, the most recent 1875, and from internal evidence we can date the second one to about 1816. Folios (ranging from 370 x 250 mm. to 335 x 210 mm.), various contemporary bindings including half-vellum and yellow boards, boards, and cloth. Schloss Arenfels: 1789, ca. 1816, & 1875. An important discovery. Schloss Arenfels, which traces its foundations to 1258, was the ancestral home of the Grafen von Isenburg, a family which traces its origins to 983. It produced several notable members of the church, including Diether von Isenburg (1412-82), Archbishop and Elector of Mainz who founded the University of Mainz; Johann V. von Isenburg (ca. 1507-56), Archbishop and Elector of Trier; and Salentin von Isenburg (ca. 1532-1610), Archbishop and Elector of Cologne. Another member, Ernst von Isenburg-Grenzau (d. 1664), was the governor general of The Netherlands. The castle and its contents later passed by marriage to the Grafen von der Leyen. In 1848 the property was inherited by Reichsgraf Ludolf Friedrich von Westerholt (1804-69) and his wife Johanna (1804-74). The library remained intact until 1951 when a large portion (about 2500 titles in 6500 volumes) went to the Stadtarchiv Bottrop, and the remainder (1167 lots) was sold at auction by Nethe & Venator of Cologne, 13-15 Sept. 1951. Many of the auctioned books were purchased by the University of Cologne. This was one of the most important auctions of books in Germany during the years immediately following World War II. The first catalogue (1 p.l., 212 pp.), dated 1789, describes the 907 titles already in the library. The library traces its origins to Bernhard von Westerholt zu Westerholt und Wilbrink (d. 1639) and Hermann Hector von Westerholt (b. 1592). The library experienced its greatest growth in the late-18th century when Ludolf Friedrich Adolf Freiherr von Boenen (1747-1828) and his wife Gräfin Wilhelmine Friederike von Westerholt-Gysenberg (1757-1820) contributed their books to the castle library. A highly cultured couple (he was president of the newly founded theatervereins in Münster), they were intensely interested in collecting books concerned with French and German literature, theater, travel, gardening and the household, and current politics. Further contributions of books dealing with law, government, and history were made by Reichsgraf Carl Casper von der Leyen (1655-1739), the cathedral provost Damian Friedrich von der Leyen (1738-1817), and his nephew Philipp Franz von der Leyen (1766-1829). The last two collected many works concerning the French Revolution and the natural sciences. The second catalogue (1 p.l., 73 leaves) was prepared no earlier than 1816 (the most recent book we can find in the catalogue was published in that year). The library has become much more numerous. The final catalogue (5 p.l., 329 pp.) reflects the state of the library in 1875. The grandson of Ludolf Friedrich and Wilhelmine, Ludolf Friedrich von Westerholt had inherited the castle and its library. He and his wife Johanna were serious collectors of books and it was during their tenancy that many of the finest early printed books entered the library. In fine condition.

French red half-morocco & red glazed boards, flat spines richly gilt, fore-edges untrimmed. London [i.e. Aix-en-Provence]: "N. Aphobe" [=Fearless], 1789. First edition, one of 50 sets printed on Holland paper, ruled throughout in red, and bound in contemporary French red half-morocco. This is the very fine William Beckford (Hamilton Palace sale, 1883, lot 1370) - Earl of Rosebery (his sale Sotheby's, London, 28 Oct. 1975, lot 332) - Major Adrian L. McLaughlin (bookplate, his sale Sotheby's Monaco, 7 Oct. 1980, lot 1487) set. The Abbé Rive (1730-91), served as librarian to the Duc de la Vallière, who had formed the most important collection of books of the 18th century. After the Duc's death, Debure, van Praet, and Nyon were selected to prepare the catalogue of the library, which appeared in 1783. Rive, who had a controversial disposition, was greatly offended for having been ignored. "Six years later in 1789, the Abbé repeated and amplified his attacks in La Chasse aux bibliographes, in which he rakes together everything that the most vindictive spite can suggest, not only concerning the two bibliographers Debure and van Praet and their catalogue, but concerning his late patron, the Duc de la Vallière, and, indeed, all others whom he deemed his enemies, who had any part in the slight which he conceived had been put upon him. Undoubtedly, in spite of all its vindictive bitterness, or perhaps, partly owing to this, it is a book full of interest to all bibliophiles and bibliographers, as well as of no little use for elucidating some obscure points in literary history."-R.C. Christie, "The Catalogues of the Library of the Duc de la Vallière" in Library Chronicle, II (1885), pp. 153-59. Rive extended his attacks to Lelong, Maittaire, Maugérard, Maury, Mercier de St. Léger, Niceron, and other contemporaries. In 1786, Rive became librarian at Aix where this book was printed. ?         Catalogue des Livres, Imprimés et Manuscrits, de la Bibliotheque de feu Monseigneur Le Prince de Soubise, Maréchal de France

dont la Vente sera indiquée par Affiches au mois de Janvier 1789. xvi, 643, [1], [2; the printed letter], 90, [8; the schedule of the sale] pp., two leaves of errata. Thick 8vo, cont. sheep-backed blue boards (head of spine a bit chipped & one corner rounded), spine gilt, red leather lettering piece on spine. Paris: Leclerc, 1788. This vast library of 8302 lots (containing about 20,000 books) comprised the components of no less than three other celebrated collections: those of Jean Grolier, de Thou, and the Président Charron de Ménars. De Thou's library, with all its Grolier books, passed en bloc in 1681 into Ménars' library, on whose decease it passed into the possession of the Cardinal de Rohan. By the continued care of the Cardinal and his successors, down to the Prince de Soubise, the library received constant accessions, until it became one of the most considerable in France. Soubise (1715-87), the charming favorite of Louis XV and Mme de Pompadour, made up for being one of the worst field commanders in French history - his defeat at Rossbach by Frederick the Great in 1757 became a classic of its kind, still commented upon by Napoleon half a century later - by being one of the best French book collectors of his time. To the collection he inherited, Soubise added "an enormous quantity of works remarkable for their interest, rarity and value" (Olivier, Pl. 2034) which he had bound in light-brown calf, with his armorial bearings on the spine. There was hardly a book sale at which he did not buy - "c'était une frénésie chez lui" (Guigard). He owned twelve Grolier bindings. The Comte d'Artois was the principal buyer at the sale; these books are, of course, now at the Arsénal. A very good copy from the library of A.R.A. Hobson with his bookplate. This is the most complete copy we have encountered: it has these additional leaves: 1. One printed leaf, headed "M," clearly a printed letter to be sent out to clients announcing the sale with a list of the most important items. 2. the very rare 8-page schedule of the sale. 3. two leaves of errata. The first and third items seem to be unknown. ?         A Voyage Round the World; but more Particularly to the North-West Coast of America: Performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon

John Stockdale and George Goulding, London 1789 - PORTLOCK, Captain Nathaniel (1748-1817) A Voyage Round the World; but more Particularly to the North-West Coast of America: Performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon ¿First Edition of Portlock¿s Account of his Voyage to Explore and Survey America¿s Northwest Coast¿Vivid Descriptions of Encounters with American Indians and the Russians¿ In 1785, the King George Sound Company was formed by a group of London merchants to pursue the lucrative sea otter fur trade in the Pacific Northwest, as identified during James Cook's third voyage (with which both Nathaniel Portlock and George Dixon were crew members). The venture purchased two ships, and Portlock and Dixon were appointed Captains: Portlock commanded the King George, while Dixon commanded the smaller Queen Charlotte. The expedition left Gravesend in the fall of 1785, sailed by way of Hawaii and Cook Inlet before heading to Nootka Sound, and returned to Hawaii for the winter. In 1788, the expedition met with Captain John Meares in Prince William Sound, a rival fur trader whose crew had been reduced by the ravage of scurvy and whose ships had been trapped by the winter ice. Portlock and Dixon gave assistance, but with the understanding that Meares would leave the region and sail directly for Macao, China. However, Meares resumed his trading, and did not leave until he had a sufficient cargo of furs. Portlock and Dixon would later charge that Meares was ungracious in accepting help from his rescuers. Dixon and Meares would also publish a series of exchanges on their various disagreements and criticisms, known as the Dixon-Meares controversy. Dixon sailed again for Nootka Sound where he named "Dixon's Entrance" and the "Queen Charlotte Islands," while Portlock explored the Alaskan coastline. "During my stay amongst the Russians, they were all very busily employed. Some were dressing green sea otter skins, others repairing their boats, and cleaning arms. Most of the Indians were out on a hunting party; the few left behind were busied in fitting darts to their spears, and making snuff from tobacco, of which they seem very fond, and their women in cooking and repairing canoes." During the voyage, Dixon and Portlock had accumulated a large number of fur pelts through trade with the Natives. On their return voyage to England, they stopped at Canton, and sold their furs at the markets, reaping great profits. By the summer of 1788, they were back in London, after a very successful and profitable voyage. London: John Stockdale and George Goulding, 1789. First Edition.         Analyse das theses de direito enfyteutico, que se defenderão no presente anno na Universidade de Coimbra .

Lisbon, Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1789. - 4°, later wrappers. Small inkstains on title page. Fine. (1 l.), 87 pp. *** FIRST EDITION, very rare. Ferreira's first published work was an apparently unrecorded defense of his thesis on emphyteusis (Coimbra 1785), while his first generally known work, @Elementa juris emphyteuticii (Coimbra, 1789), was a textbook on emphyteusis. With origins in Roman law, emphyteusis involved contracts by which extended or perpetual rights were granted for the use of agricultural land, subject to rental payments and the grantee's obligation to keep the land in cultivation. Ferreira's analysis was immediately attacked in three theses defended at Coimbra during 1789. In this work, Ferreira notes 14 points of disagreement between his work and those of his opponents, and provides in three letters a detailed defense of his views.Ferreira Cardoso da Costa (1765-1834) was born in Bahia, took his law degree at Coimbra University in 1785, and was appointed to its faculty in 1788. With a profound knowledge of ancient and modern law, he became a noted jurisconsult, serving as magistrate in Portugal for some years. In 1810 he was rounded up with others accused of Jacobinism and collaborating with the French (the "Setembrizada"), and deported to Ilha Terceira. There he married into a wealthy family and spent the rest of his life in the Azores.         Ethan Allen's cousin Ebenezar Allen pens a fine colonial ADS: An early record of Allen's supply purchases for the establishment of Poultney, Vermont.

Stratford, April 17, 1789. 11.5" x 7". "Fine content Autograph Document Signed ""Ebenezar Allen,"" 4pp., 11.5"" x 7"", Stratford, April 17, 1789. Signed twice additionally in text. Allen provides a copy of his accounts with Captain Stowe and Litchfield County, Connecticut merchant, Truman Hinman dating between April 18,1771 and December 17, 1772. An account which dates only days after he, together with Thomas Ashley, an in-law of the Allen family, made camp on the bank of the Poultney river establishing the town on April 15, 1771. The account includes four major orders of supplies from Truman Hinman (1731 - 1793) beginning with very basic supplies ordered only days after Allen and Ashley built their shanties and included iron, “1 Bundle of Linnen [sic]”, “1 Ream paper”, “4 half Faggots Steel”, “2 Small… Nails”, “1 Small bag Indigo”, and most importantly, a ”Cross Cut Saw”. By June 14, Allen was anticipating the arrival of more settlers, and ordered what appears to be not only supplies for himself, but for resale including a box of pipes “1 Bundle of Saws”, nails, “3 Empty Cases”, pepper, “6 Iron Shovells”, “Large Trunk Goods” “6 Tea Kettles”, “2 Bundles of Scythes”I, “2 bags of paint”, “16 Shear molds”, “4 Bags Shott”, “1 Bag Coffee”, “6 pewter Tankards.” The next day, Allen ordered even more of what he had ordered the previous day as well as “3 Bundles Books”, “1 Bundle Hour Glasses”, “a parcell [sic] Stone Ware.” That cache lasted the summer and Allen did not make another order until October. This time, besides the basics including spices, dry goods, nails and iron, he sent for wine, “1 Bundle German Steel”, “1 Very Large Bocks [sic] of Dry Goods” Hindman was a dry goods merchant in Woodbury, Connecticut and for some time, Hindman was partner with Shadrach Osborn (1747 - 1838) of Soutbury, Connecticut. Osborn would later work in the commissary department during the American Revolution. An account between Allen and that partnership appear on the fourth page dating between August 7, and March 4, 1773 for nails, “6 puter [sic] platters” The supplies had to be carted via New York, and Allen paid mostly in cash or by the exchange of wheat. One of Allen’s customers was a “Captain Stowe.” who purchased a variety of goods from Allen. It is not certain whether Stowe was an early settler of Poultney or not however. Most of the original proprietors of Poultney (the grant was made in 1761) were from Litchfield County, Connecticut as were Hindman and Osborn. In the rush of land speculation following the French and Indian War, Ethan Allen managed to procure about a third of the available land by 1770 and helped defend the grants from competing claims by New York. The Litchfield County proprietors, in their final meeting in 1772, elected Ethan Allen as Proprietor’s Clerk. During the American Revolution, many Poultney men including Ebenezar Allen and Thomas Ashley would participate in the 1775 capture on Fort Ticonderoga that was led by Ethan Allen. Ebenezar Allen would receive an appointment as captain in Col. Herrick’s battalion of rangers in July 1777, and served with distinction at the Battle of Bennington and in September of the same year, led the assault on Mt. Defiance. This account appears to have been composed by in Allen in 1789 due to some dispute over payment. Allen certified on the final page ""..that the foregoing Account from Apr. 18th 1771 to Octr. 17th, 1771 is as it stands on my Shipping Book & the same was paid to me by Capt. Stowe July 2, 1772..."" Ever the wanderer, he did not stay in Poultney for long. In 1779, Ebenezar became one of the original grantees of, South Hero, Vermont on Grand Isle in Lake Champlain and moved his family there soon afterwards. Always the speculator, he toured Ohio, Michigan, and Upper Canada in 1792 and in 1795 he became a partner in an effort to purchase the entire lower Michigan peninsula from the U.S. government. The attempt to purchase the area for $500,000 fell apart after it was reveled that two of Allen’s partners had attempted to bribe several congressmen for their support o the purchase. In 1800, Allen left South Hero to live in Burlington, where he operated a tavern until his death in 1805."

– Hayn/G.       New York: Hodge, Allen and Campbell, 1789. xxi,[25]-185,[2],xiv pp. 2pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, leather label. Minor wear to boards, joints worn, one partially split. Minor foxing. Very good. In a half morocco box. The first acts of Congress, including the Bill of Rights and containing much of the legislation fundamental to the establishment of government under the Constitution. The first Congress met in New York on March 4, 1789, and continued until the end of September. It officially ratified the Constitution and Washington's election as first U.S. president, and passed much of the most basic legislation for the machinery of government, regulating the Customs, Judiciary, Post Office, Mint, and the like. Much time was spent on the Bill of Rights, which appears here in what is probably its second public printing (preceded, it is generally believed, by its inclusion in the JOURNAL OF THE SENATE for the first session), still including twelve amendments (the first two, relating to the numbers in a congressional district and congressional salaries, were later omitted). Needless to say, all of these things make this volume a foundation work in the history of American government. There were two editions of this volume produced by Hodge, Allen and Campbell, the present octavo edition and another on a folio format. Both are quite rare. EVANS 22190. ESTC W14331.
