Madrid, Imprenta Real, 1789. - Small folio (26.3 x 18.5 cm.), recent full antique crimson morocco, spine richly gilt with raised bands in six compartments, dark green morocco lettering piece, gilt letter, wide gilt border on covers, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endleaves, text-block edges rouged. Half-title has some soiling and spotting; minor soiling in margins of title-page; rubric in outer margin of each recto; light dampstains on final 5 plates and blank verso of last plate. Still, in fine condition. Two different early signatures in blank margins of plates 21 and 22. Contemporary ink rubric in outer blank margin of each leaf recto, with the exception of the half title and title page, as well as in the outer blank margin recto of each plate. (3 ll.), xiv, 408 [i.e. 406] pp., 22 folding engraved plates. The pagination skips from 113 [leaf P1 recto] to 116 [leaf P1 verso]. There is no loss of text. *** FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of this early Spanish contribution to clock-making literature. A second issue with a new title page appeared in 1791, and there is a facsimile reprint, Valencia 1986. The plates, engraved by José Giraldo y García after designs by Zerelta, depict clocks, plans for their construction, and their machinery. "The book is original work and shows several novel constructions, including a two-wheel clock . The drawings are beautifully executed" (Baillie). Relatively few original works by Spaniards devoted wholly to clock-making had been published in Spain before this time; this appears to be the most heavily illustrated, and therefore probably the most useful. The earliest work in Basanta Campos that deals with mechanical clocks seems to be Manuel del Rio's Arte de reloxes, 1759, with 13 plates, which Baillie describes as "very comprehensive in subject matter, but quite inadequate in detail." Penna's Compendio util, 1760, was apparently not illustrated, and Pedro Marechal's L'arte de conservar y arreglar los reloxes, 1767, was an unacknowledged translation of Berthoud, with all the plates omitted.Zerella y Ycoaga describes how to make all sorts of watches, including pocket watches, clocks for the home and carriage, clocks to use at night and calendar clocks with pendulums. He gives details of their working parts and instructions for common repairs. The plates corresponding to this section show the gears and how they fit together, and various clock faces (showing seconds, minutes, hours, months, phases of the moon, etc.). The second section of the work (beginning on p. 191) contains the mathematical, geometrical, geographical and mechanical theory necessary for clock-makers. At the end (pp. 386-93) is a brief chapter on constructing music boxes, illustrated by the final plate. The Tratado appeared again, essentially unchanged, at Madrid, 1791.Zerella y Ycoaga, clockmaker to Ferdinand VI, studied at Geneva and came to Spain hoping to establish an Escuela de Relojeria and a factory that would compete with those of France and England. Chapter XXIX of the first part was obviously written with that in mind: "Modo de hacer un relox de bolsillo y de sala, mejor que en Francia ni en Inglaterra . "*** Palau 380316: calling for only 2 preliminary leaves. Baillie, Clocks & Watches p. 333: not mentioning the 3 unnumbered preliminary leaves. Basanta Campos, Bibliografia relojera española p. 62: not mentioning xiv pp. preceding the main text; reproducing the title-page on p. 61. Cf. Pertuch & Hilker, Horological Books & Pamphlets in the Franklin Institute Library p. 109 (the second edition). Not in Aguilar Piñal. Not in Bromley, Clockmakers' Library. Not in British Library, Eighteenth-Century Spanish STC. Not in Ticknor Catalogue. CCPBE locates eight copies in Spanish libraries, at least three of which are incomplete (plus three in anonymous private collections). Rebiun repeats one of these and adds three more. Neither issue located in Copac. Not located in NUC. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

An uncommon map, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Dimensioni 470 345mm

This work was originally published in 1787 as a 56-page pamphlet entitled Observations on Government; Including Some Comments on Mr. Adams's Defense of the Constitution and Government of the United States of America. DuPont de Nemours, Nicolas de Condorcet and J.A. Gauvain Gallors, a translation of the new U.S. Constitution and notes from Virginia's ratifying convention. Originally attributed to William Livingston, this work was written by Stevens, an engineer and inventor best known for his work on the development of the steamboat.         Extra Official State Papers. Addressed to The Right Hon. Lord Rawdon and the Other Members of the Two House of Parliament, Associated for the Preservation of the Constitution and Promoting the Prosperity of the British Empire. By a Late Under Secretary of State [William Knox].

London, J.Debrett, 1789. - Volume One (of two) in two parts. 8°. 49, [1], 14, [2], 174 [2] pages plus Errata-leaf. Original Hardcover. Contemporary Irish calf with edges stained green. Neatly rebacked. Gilt ornaments on spine with beautiful original spinelabel. In overall excellent condition. This thoughtful work on Irish politics and history was written by an Irish-born government official, and subsequently owned by two significant figures in Irish history, both of whom have left their mark on it. The first was the spy and co-founder of the United Irishmen, Leonard Macnally who has signed and annotated the text, followed by Warner William Westenra second Baron Rossmore who has left his notes and jottings on the Act of Union. [SABIN 38181] The title page bears the ownership signature of Leonard Macnally who signs himself 'Leo: MacNally' with the name of the anonymous author '[William] Knox' written in his hand below. Macnally, a barrister and playwright, is now remembered as a notorious spy for the British government, exploiting his status as a co-founder of the United Irishmen to betray friends and republican clients such as Wolfe Tone even as he purported to defend them in the court cases that followed the rebellion of 1798. In addition to his ownership signature MacNally has lightly annotated Knox's Appendix which contains a 'Paper delivered to Lord Frederick Campbell, when appointed Secretary to Ireland, 1767' in which the author addresses the 'tyranny' of aristocratic government in Ireland, lamenting the 'wretched. ancient condition of Ireland. in respect to property' ownership. MacNally's interest seems to lie in Knox's reading of the history of Irish land tenure with five inked annotations setting out the legal justification for Knox's historical analysis, frequently by reference to Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. The bookplate of the Barons Rossmore appears on the front pastedown, almost certainly Warner William Westenra (1765-1842) the second Baron who was briefly a member of the Irish Parliament before losing his seat in the Act of Union, returning to spearhead a campaign to reform the representative peerage in Ireland, finally serving as Lord Lieutenant of Monaghan. On the penultimate blank endpaper, Westenra wrestles with the implications of Union with the UK, apparently writing before the act: 'The question now before the public is shall we have an Union? Shall the people of Ireland consent to an Union of Legislature. The voice of thousands cry out no - that is the voice of thousands exclaim - let material pride trample upon national interest.' Alluding to one of the perennial features of Irish history, Rossmore acknowledges: 'Literary men of genius will go to England', but resignedly continues, 'Is that not the case now - Sheridan &c' [Description: Christian White]

Komplett acht Teile in vier Büchern. - Kl. St. a. T., fleckig, leichte Gbrsp. Bd. 1: kl. Nr. a. V., kl. Fraßspur in Marginalie, Ebd. berieben.

The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, in the county of Southampton: with engravings, and an appendix

London: Printed by T. Bensley, 1789 - First edition, 4to, (vi), 468, (12) pp, bound without the final errata leaf. Folding frontispiece, trimmed to the top edge, two engraved fly titles and 6 plates, armorial bookplate of Edward [Harbord], Lord Suffield, radical politician and anti-slavery campaigner, to paste down. Contemporary tree calf, subtle repairs to joints, gilt decorated spine with an armorial tool, green morocco labels. One of the landmarks of British natural history. ".nobody has managed to rival the grace and ease of White's writing. In a measure this success must be attributed to his style and personality. Central to this last is a modest acceptance that some aspects of the natural scene are beyond understanding. Such 'fear before God' has delighted readers for more than two centuries, and unites the cabinet (of specimens), the laboratory, and the study." (ODNB).

Paris: Letellier, 1789. Octavo; contemporary French mottled calf. One of two French editions of Tench's Narrative published in 1789. This is thus either the first or the second French publication on settled Australia, and one of the very earliest descriptions in French of the appearance of La Pérouse at Botany Bay in 1788.Two French editions of Tench's Narrative were published in 1789, of uncertain priority; the other was published by Knapen fils. This is the more extended version and includes a long, 85-page section about the history of discovery entitled "Récit historique de la découverte de la Nouvelle Hollande et du nouveau Pays de Galles Méridional". The economic historian K.M. Dallas sees this section as significant evidence in the continuing debate about the reasons for the decision to settle New South Wales. This copy, like all those we have examined, does not have a folding map: Ferguson mentions there being one in the National Library's copy but that is almost certainly an addition; no map is mentioned in the "Table" Preliminaries browned, scattered foxing, spine worn, joints restored, later endpapers. A good copy.

Two volumes bound in one. [8],64pp., plus eleven leaves of folding tables; [8],58pp., plus eleven leaves of folding tables. Half titles. Quarto. Contemporary full red calf, gilt ruled, a.e.g. Second work printed on light blue paper. Occasional light foxing, otherwise clean. A fine copy. Two truly exceptional examples of early printing from Saint Domingue, containing financial reports for the French colony compiled by François Barbé-Marbois, the colonial Intendant. Barbé-Marbois had a long career as a French politician and diplomat, including significant service in the United States during the Revolution and early Republic, eventually negotiating the treaty that settled the Louisiana Purchase. From 1785 to 1789, however, he served as the Intendant of the French Caribbean colonies. While there, he instituted a series of controversial reforms that angered the elite plantation owners, who ultimately succeeded in forcing him out. The two present works comprise a financial account of his time in charge of the colony. Together, they provide an extraordinarily detailed and invaluable picture of the economic state of the island just prior to the Haitian Revolution, when it was the most prosperous of all of the European colonies in the Caribbean. Each work is broken into sections describing not only the general state of the economy, but also individual accounts and funds related to the operation of the colonial government, accompanied by folding tables that provide accounting for each economic area. Of particular interest are the overall economic appraisal of the island, information on trade and manufacturing, the finances of the French Navy in Saint Domingue, as well as expenses and revenues associated with government involvement in the slave trade. The successor to Barbé-Marbois, Vincent-René de Proisy, praised him highly for his efforts, writing in his subsequent financial assessment of the colony in 1790 that: "C'est à M. de Marbois que la colonie doit l'avantage d'avoir une connoissance entière de la manutention de ses diverses branches de revenu royal et colonial; je n'ai trouvé dans sa correspondence avec le ministre du roi aucun ordre qui l'ait obligé à publier les résultats de cette partie de son administration, mais j'ai trouvé la preuve que S.M. avoit daigné applaudir à l'exécution du projet qu'il en avoit formée à son arrivée dans la colonie...." These works are significant not solely for the valuable historical information they contain, but also as Caribbean imprints of outstanding quality and execution. Published in Port-au-Prince by Mozard, the principal colonial printer on Saint Domingue, these imprints display a composition and complexity that is extremely unusual for Caribbean printing of this period, and exceeds the quality of any contemporaneous North American and some European printing. They are certainly the finest examples of the many specimens of Saint Domingue printing handled by this firm. Both works are printed on thick paper; the second work is printed on a light blue paper stock. According to LeClerc, only a very small number of either imprint was published on the island itself, before they were republished by the royal printer in Paris in 1790. LECLERC 1364, 1366. SABIN 3304, 3305.
