Madrid, 1789. 297pp. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, leather label. Lightly rubbed at extremities. Bookplates of Luis Montt and Alberto Parreño on front pastedown and fly leaf. Faint library blindstamp on titlepage. Minor scattered foxing. Very good. A new economic plan to revive the failing fortunes of the Spanish empire in America, in which the author asserts that greater freedom needs to be given to Spain's colonies if they are to profit from them in the same way as Britain and France profit from their respective colonies. Though it was published in 1789, it was written much earlier and seems to have circulated widely in manuscript form. Campillo y Cosio (1693-1743) was Spain's Minister of Finance and War from 1741 to 1743; this work would be highly influential on Spanish economic policy in the later part of the 18th century. "Nowhere in Spanish thought were arguments for trade with independent Indians articulated more clearly than in the well-known NUEVO SISTEMA... a master plan to revive the economy of the empire...Part of it was apparently plagiarized and published in 1779 as the second half of a book entitled the PROYECTO ECONOMICO, by the Spanish economist and ilustrado Bernardo Ward...Many Bourbon administrators referred explicitly to it, as did Viedma, when he noted in 1784 that the Indian threat on the pampa would diminish if Pampas were treated with friendship and trade as the French did 'with similar savages, and as Mr. [Bernardo] Ward recommends with good reason in his PROYECTO ECONOMICO" - Weber. "Written in 1748, but never printed until 1789, probably on account of the unpleasant truths it contains relating to the treatment of the unfortunate Indians" - Sabin. An important piece of New World economics in Spanish America, as well as an enlightened Spanish view on dealing with indigenous populations. PALAU 41265. MEDINA (BHA) 5341. SABIN 10314.         An Account of the Pelew Islands Situated in the Western Part of the Pacific Ocean Composed from the Journals and Communications of Captain Henry Wilson and Some of His Officers Who in August 1783 Were There Shipwrecked in the Antelope, a Packet Belonging

London: Printed for John Wilson , 1789. xxx+408 pages with frontispiece, one additional plate and vocabulary of the Pelew language. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") Original 3/4 leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering and red label to spine. (Hill 907 & 816) Fourth edition. In 1783, the East India Company packet, the Antelope out of Macao was shipwrecked on the Pelew islands (now Pelau or Belau in the western Carolines, in Micronesia). All the crew were saved and were the first Europeans to make contact with these islanders. They were lucky in that there was a Malay there, shipwrecked the year before, who was able to act as interpreter. Captain Henry Wilson and his crew developed unusually amicable relations with the Palauan inhabitants and participated in expeditions against their enemies. They were able to recover a great deal from the wreck and to build a new vessel, with which they sailed to Macau after a stay of just over three months. They took with them Lee Boo, who became a figure of fashionable interest in London. Using extensive interviews with Captain Wilson and other participants, including Lee Boo, George Keate wrote "An Account of the Pelew Islands". This work is distinctive in its account of the encounter between two cultures, for its anthropologically-minded account of Palauan culture and society, and as one of the fullest 18th-century accounts of a Pacific society. Condition:Large folding map in need of repair but complete. Corners bumped, edge wear, spine rubbed, light worming to back cover, book plate on front paste down, previous owner's name on title in neat inscription dated 1802, some shelf wear, else a good to very good copy.

An inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.

New calf spines (to style), gilt tooling, raised bands, gilt titles to red morocco labels. Internally: Vol 1, [3], (iv-x), [1], 2-499 pp. V2, [3], ((iv-vi), [1], 2-518 pp, [5] appendix. V3, [3], (iv-v), [1], [1], 2-465 pp, [1], [50] index, [1] adverts. Bookplates to fpds (John Forbes of Blackford [1758-1840]), text block edges yellowed, ink name to head of tp's {Blackford). There were probably 1500 copies printed in February 1789. (Allibone 2126. Eatwell- Palgrave dictionary of Political Economy p423. Mizuta - Bibliography of Adam Smith). (Folio, 12.7*21 cms). Smith, moral philosopher and political economist, whose Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry. Though often criticized for its rambling structure, historical digressions, and over-abundance of ‘curious facts’, the work has a single unifying theme which takes on further ramifications as it is unfolded. As the full title makes clear, it is an enquiry into the nature of wealth, how its benefits should be measured or judged. See ODNB.

Gedanken über die Bildung des Basalts und die vormahlige Beschaffenheit der Gebirge in Deutschland. Neue verbesserte Auflage.

Braunschweig, in der Schulbuchhandlung, 1789. 8vo (181 x 106mm). pp. 75,( 5). Contemporary calf, floral gilt spine with black gilt lettered label, covers with gilt border. The first edition was published in Leipzig 1787 with a somewhat different title 'Etwas über die Bildung des Basalts und die vormahlige Beschaffenheit der Gebirge in Deutschland'. Graf August Ferdinand von Veltheim (1741-1801) was a German scientist with 'wide ranging antiquarian, historical, and mineralogical interest' (Sinkankas 6834).

        Great Brown King Fisher.

London: John Stockdale, 1789. Original engraving, 260 x 190 mm. very good condition, mounted. Fine impression of the so-called "Great Brown Kings Fisher" or Laughing Kookaburra. This engraving is taken from Governor Phillip's Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay published by Stockdale in late 1789. Interestingly, and probably because early field notes from collectors in New South Wales were few and far between, the distinctive laugh of the kookaburra is not discussed in the text, which simply comments: 'This species inhabits various places in the South Seas, being pretty common at New Guinea; but the specimen from which our figure was taken, was sent from Port Jackson in South Wales (sic), where, likewise, it is not unfrequently met with. We believe it has not yet been figured in any British work.' The reference to New Guinea is an error, related to the earliest publication of any depiction of the kookaburra in Sonnerat's account of a voyage to New Guinea. Sonnerat was given that bird by Sir Joseph Banks at the Cape of Good Hope as he returned on the Endeavour. This is how the bird acquired its incorrect but lasting scientific name Dacelo novaguineae. A slight marginal tear at bottom left corner.

Hardcover. 4to (295 x 220 mm). 63 [1]; 94 pp. Signatures: A-H4; A-L4 M-N2 (-N2, presumed blank), 79 of 80 leaves, lacking the engraved plate to Blumenbach's text. Text block untrimmed and partially unopened. Early 19th-century blue paper covered boards (old rebacking, head of spine torn). A stipple engraved portrait of Blumenbach by Ball after Grimm is bound in as a frontispiece. Internally little age-toned, untrimmed leaves little soiled and frayed at fore-margins. Provenance: William Lister*, with engraved booklabel "Dr. Lister, Lincoln's Inn Fields", Walter Pagel Library (paper label to front pastedown). Except for the lacking portrait a fine, unsophisticated copy. ----FIRST EDITION, exceedingly rare. "Two papers responding to the prize question on plant nutrition set by the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences for 1782 and resubmitted in 1788. There is an appendix by Wolff, the larger second section of the book, Von der eigenthümlichen und wesentlichen Kraft der vegetabilischen sowohl als auch der animalischen Substanz. This is cited as a separate item in Gaissinovitch's D.S.B. article, but it was not published independently. This was a crucial period in the history of the theories of plant nutrition, begun by Ingenhousz's discovery of photosynthesis (1779) but only fully developed when Lavoisier's new chemistry was assimilated. This is discussed by Sachs (History of Botany, 1890, pp. 494), though he does not mention these prize essays on the subject. Wolff is a key Figure in the history of botany, the first since Malpighi and Grew to devote attention to plant anatomy. His Theoria Generationis (1759), which established the theory of epigenesis, laid the foundation of our understanding of the development of plant cells. *William Lister (1757?-1830), the former (perhaps first) owner of this copy took his MD at Edinburgh in 1781. He settled in London and was physician to St. Thomas' Hospital. He was a good classical scholar. (Munk II, pp. 329-7)" R. Gaskell, Books from the Library of Walter Pagel, Pt. 2, 16. This book is very rare with no copy in the USA and the U.K. according to OCLC/Worldcat. Very Good.

A Voyage Round the World; but More Particularly to the North-West Coast of America: Performed in 1785. 1786, 1787, and 1788, in The King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon

Geo. Goulding, London 1789 - 3/4 modern brown morocco & cloth, 4to. Spine with 5 raised bands, title in gilt and decorations in other compartments. Slight rubbing to extrems. Hinges tight. Eps clean. Very mild occasional foxing and a rare marginal finger smudge. This copy trimmed a bit by binder and lacking half title, as is often the case with this volume. Illus. with a large copper-engraved folding map facing the title pg. and 21 other copper-engraved plates, charts and maps, some folding. Lg. folding map a bit soiled with a few very small marginal tears. 1 plate expertly repaired and laid on to new backing sheet. Three of the plates hand colored. pp. xxix, errata, 360, 47. Actually written by William Beresford and edited with appendices by George Dixon, this is a series of 49 letters giving an account of an English expedition to establish fur trade in North America, with information on North American geography, ethnology, and natural history from Nootka Sound northward. Streeter notes: "Portlock and Dixon, who had been with Captain Cook, made this expedition to the northwest coast of America to collect furs for a group of London merchants. Portlock, the Commander-in-Chief, was on the King George. The expedition left Gravesend August 29, 1785, and arrived at the Sandwich Islands via Cape Horn in May 1786. The mouth of Cooks's River in Alaska was reached July 18 and the rest of the summer was spent in sailing down the Coast as far as Nootka Sound. The expedition wintered in the Sandwich Islands and in 1788 proceeded to Prince William Sound where they met Captain Meares. The vessels parted company in May, with Portlock exploring the Alaskan coast and Dixon sailing again for Nootka Sound, where he named 'Dixon's Entrance' and the "Queen Charlotte Islands.' The furs were sold at Canton, China, and both ships, after a most successful voyage arrived back in England by way of Cape Good Hope in the summer of 1788." Signature of what appears to read B. Hollis, Oct.13th 1795 at head of half titles.ESTC T177867. In early 1789 Hayley is recorded as revising the proof sheets for four volumes which 'were nothing more or less than a novel, which a singular incident induced the poet to compose. It happened that in revising for his literary friend, Charlotte Smith, one of her novels in manuscript, he objected to her mode of terminating the story, and suggested a new train of occurrences for that purpose. The lady, of a most lively and powerful imagination, had anticipated the objections of her friendly critic, and forming from her own fancy a new catastrophe for her composition, had no occasion to avail herself of the poet's suggestion. The idea, however, that he had started, appeared too good to be utterly lost; and he was therefore tempted to build upon it the novel in a series of letters, which he entitled, The Young Widow, or the History of Cornelia Sedley. It was written with so pure a design to promote the interest of religion, that the author was tempted to send a handsome copy of the performance with [an] anonymous letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury'.
