Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind.

John Murray 1789; 1792; 1810 Complete with all blank leaves, half-titles and directions to the binder. With more than 800 engravings, including 173 copper engraved plates and 359 text images by and after Thomas Holloway, Fuseli and others, and by William Blake. Contemporary polished calf, gilt spines, front joints a bit sensitive; interior with minor foxing and off-setting of the plates as usual, but generally a tall, clean and well-margined set in excellent condition. First English edition of Volumes I and II, with the sheets of the third volume reissued by Stockdale. The work is famous for the splendid illustrations and vignettes, including the plates by William Blake. It was a classic pseudo-scientific work, extremely influential in the history of psychiatry, and represents Lavater's account of madmen, demons, and terror. Fuseli's drawings are rendered with distinction in the engravings of Thomas Holloway, and in one instance, Gillray (see Ray, The illustrator and the book in England, 20). Lavater (1741-1801) was a German poet, mystical writer and physiognomist.

The pagination in both versions, however, is identical. The author analyses the effects of a revolution in France by looking at the changes it would make under three headings - 'La Justice, l'utilité, la facilité'; gives a spirited criticism of what is now known as the anciene régime; and joyously lauds the actions of his revolutionary comrades. 8vo (225 x 140 mm)., pp. viii, 99, [1]; uncut and unopened in the original decorated paper wrappers. Ristretto Istorico Cronologico degl' Imperatori, Pontefici, Concilj e Sette

Firenze (Florence) "Chronological History of the Emperors, Popes, and the Council of Seven" (I think). The first 3 volumes of an apparently incomplete set; vol. 3 goes only through the 12th century. Vol. 1 is publ. 1789 by 'Nella Stamperia degli Eredi Pecchioni'. Vols. 2 & 3 are publ. 1790 by 'Gaetano Cambiagi Stampator Reale'. (Cambiagi was an important publisher in Florence at that time; Pecchioni had much fewer productions and it is difficult to learn anything about him.) In every other respect these volumes are identical, using the same typefaces, paper, endpapers and bindings. The paper has a watermark which is very hard to see, as it appears only partially in the upper left corner of some pages. Edges are speckled red; pastedowns are handpainted with a floral pattern. Bound such that there are no free endpapers; pages sewn directly to the vellum. The vellum is smartly hand-lettered on each spine. Each vol. has an owner's name on the blank page before title, there is some minor soiling on the covers and light rippling to the pages, and the title on the spine of vol. 2 is faded or rubbed. The text is very bright and clean. 376 + 287 + 287 pp.; final pp. of 2 & 3 are followed by a page of 'Errori Correzioni' (errata). A rare set in remarkable condition.. First Edition. Vellum.

A Party Angling; The Angler's Repast

London: Published by John Raphael Smith, 28 November 1789. Mezzotints. Image size: 17 1/8 x 21 7/8 inches. 18 3/4 x 23 inches approx. A pair of the most famous fishing prints after George Morland, the master of English genre painting. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. His brother-in-law, William Ward, engraved a great number of his paintings reproducing in print his endearing paintings of English country life. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age. "Angler's Repast" was the first collaboration between Ward and Morland. During the eighteenth century punt fishing became a very fashionable sport, gentlemen and ladies gathered in droves to enjoy this popular outdoor pursuit. Morland was so struck with the charm of this pastime that he quickly rendered it on to canvas, thus creating two of his most cherished paintings. The two fashionable ladies pictured in the paintings are in fact Morland and Ward's wives, while the gentlemen are John Raphael Smith and the engraver himself. The identity of the helpful black servant is not recorded. Mellon, British Sporting and Animal Prints p.123; Siltzer p.189.

The Effects of Youthful Extravagance & Idleness; The Fruits of early Industry & Oeconomy

London: Published by T. Simpson, 1 July 1789 & 1 November 1789. Colour printed mezzotint with added hand colour. Image size: 20 x 15 3/4 inches. 22 3/8 x 16 3/4 inches approx. A fine pair of colour printed stipple engravings by George Morland, the master of English genre painting. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age. The original painting of "The Fruits of early Industry and Economy" is in the Philladelphia Museum of Art, rather appropriately as it reflects the views Benjamin Franklin broadcast in Poor Richard's Alamanac earlier in the 18th century. In fact, Franklin wrote to his grandson Benny Bache in 1780 that those who study hard "live comfortably in good houses", while those who are idle "are poor and dirty and ragged and ignorant and vicious and live in miserable cabins and garrets." (BF Letters 9/25/1780). How views have changed! The comfortably pudgy successful businessman with his decanter of port, black servant in livery and healthy progeny came to be a popular target of contempt, and his idle counterpart as not so much sinning as sinned against by an implacable system that favored the few at the expense of the many. Skaldedikt öfver Sverige.

Uppsala, J. Edman, 1789. 4:o. (2),24 s. Enkelt marmorerat pappbd. Ryggen med revor och pappersförluster. Enstaka lager- och småfläckar samt ett litet maskhål i inre marginalen på några blad. Titelbladet med några svaga solkfläckar. Med Gunnar Brusewitz exlibris.. Tryckt endast i 50 exemplar enligt Järbes biografi över Bjugg i Enköpings stadsbiblioteks årsberättelse 1953.

      - Rotterdam, Gerard Abraham Arrenberg, 1789.4to. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt with red morocco title-label (foot of spine sl. dam.). With engraved folding map, 3 engraved folding plates and 4 oval stipple-engraved portraits of Henry Wilsin, Abba Thulle, Ludee, and Prince Lee Boo. XXXII,365,(1) pp.* First Dutch edition; first edition published in London in 1788: An account of the Pelew Islands, situated in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. - In 1783 the East India Packet Antelope under command of Henry Wilson, after leaving Macao ran onto a reef near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group, and was wrecked. The crew reached shore and were well treated by the natives. From the wreck they built a small boat which they managed to get to Macao, taking with them Prince Lee Boo, the son of king Abba Thule. Lee Boo soon died of smallpox in England. The melancholy tale of the young prince's death was very popular in England. A version of the story appeared on the stage. This shipwreck is one of the most popular of all shipwreck narratives, partly because of the happy ending of the adventure and partly because of the detailed descriptions of the Pelew Islands' natural features and society. It is the main source of early knowledge of the Palau Islands. George Keate (1729-1797), a friend of captain Wilson and Voltaire, composed the relation from the journals and communications of the captain and some of his officers. - A fine copy on heavy paper.Cat. Essai sur l’instruction des aveugles

With an elaborate frontispiece and 21 remarkable engravings, many done by Julie Ribault (1789-ca. 1839). Contemporary green boards with manuscript title on spine; light damp stains and a few spots. Overall a very good uncut copy. First edition of Guillié’s classic work explaining his system of teaching reading and writing, as well as occupations, to the blind, which he developed while he was director of the Institut des Jeunes Aveugles, the first school for the blind. The first part of the book details a history of the Institut, and offers short biographies of famous blind people. The finely illustrated plates depict idealized, smartly dressed blind students weaving, knitting, playing musical instruments, caning chairs, and in an especially exquisite engraving, printing – possibly the same blind craftsmen who printed this copy!& & Guillié (1780-1865) devoted his life to the study of the blind, discovering ways to use their sensorial abilities to learn various occupations and pastimes. He succeeded founder Valentin Hauy as director of the Institut des Jeunes Aveugles, the home of Louis Braille starting in 1819. Before this school was founded, blind children were abandoned on the street to beg, or kept hidden by their families.&

Very rare pamphlet on tarantulas and a description of the case of the thirteen or fourteen year old boy Ambrosio Silvano, who was hospitalized after he was bitten by a tarantula. They effectively treated the boy by playing him music and let him dance the tarantella, a ritual Italian dance popularly believed to cure tarantism. The incident occurred just after the publication of Tarantismo Observado en España (1787) an extensive study on the subject of tarantulas and the tarantella, by the Spanish physicist Francisco Xavier Cid. This small pamphlet might also be written by Cid, or at least based on his study to which is referred at the end of the text.

London: Printed for T. Cadell in the Strand, 1789/1789/1793.. [2],51,[1]; [2],72,17,[1]; [4],179pp. Quarto. Contemporary marbled paper boards with new calf backstrip and corners, gilt leather label. A few leaves with light foxing, else quite clean internally. Very good. In this copy the third title in our description is bound first, with the next two following it. This is the complete complement of works arising out of the long-standing dispute between England and Spain over the English colonization of the Mosquito Coast in Central America. Latin America had historically been controlled by Spain (for the most part), though the English established a presence in Central America in the 17th century, represented mostly by buccaneers or logwood cutters. By the mid-18th century the region had several hundred British settlers, and their right to live in the area was seemingly affirmed by Spain in the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War. However, in 1779, Spain entered the American Revolutionary War as an ally of France, which had just made a treaty of alliance with the United States. This precipitated a Spanish attack on British settlements in the Mosquito Coast, in which a large amount of British property was destroyed. The Convention of London of 1786 between England and Spain called for the evacuation of British subjects from the Mosquito Coast. The arguments of the English claimants to losses that resulted from the 1779 attack and the 1786 treaty are laid out in great detail in this group of texts. Included are a historical sketch of the region and of the English presence there, a detailed chronological description of the conflict with Spain, and an account of English monetary damages and losses. Robert White was the lead counselor on behalf of the claimants. A search of OCLC reveals only three institutions that have all three of the titles listed above, the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the Huntington Library. Rare, and quite interesting with regard to this manifestation of the Anglo-Spanish rivalry in America. SABIN 103448, 103447, 51077. PALAU 375018, 375017.

Madrid: de Orden Superior, 1789. Small folio. (11 5/8 x 8 inches). [i-ii], 1-44pp. letterpress title with large wood-cut vignette of the Spanish Royal arms, text in Spanish, signed at the end with the paraph of Antonio Valdés, minister of the Spanish Navy. 1 small format (5 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches) hand-coloured engraving of the Real Compañia Maritima flag. Bound to style in vellum, manuscript lettering to spine. The printed version of the Spanish Royal decree establishing the Real Compañía Marítima (Royal Maritime Company) This fascinating work is beautifully printed, and includes a carefully engraved and coloured image of the flag that was granted to the Real Compañía Maritima. The text includes detailed instructions for what was to prove to be a hort-lived venture. The intention was that the Compañía Maritima should spear-head a revival of the Spanish fishing and whaling industries, which had foundered by the late 18th century. The Compañía Marítima was initially well-funded with its financial backers including the Spanish King himself, but was not a success and was dissolved early in the nineteenth century.
