A Narrative of Four Journeys Into the Country of the Hottentots, and Caffraria in the Years One Thousand and Seventy-Seven, Eight, and Nine

No. 72, St. Paul's Church-Yard, London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1789. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. William Paterson, FRS (1755 –1810) was a Scottish soldier, explorer, administrator, and botanist best known for leading early settlement in Tasmania. This volume is finely bound in a recent brown half leather over marbled paper boards with raised and gilt spine bands, gilt rules, red spine title box, and leather corners. The binding is virtually as-new. The contents are very good with only light intermittent spotting and toning to the engravings as normal. All 17 copper plates as well as the folding map are present and in excellent condition. This is one of the first English descriptions of the interior of South Africa. "Patterson accompanied Colonel Gordon (Commander of the Troops of the Dutch East India Company in South Africa) and Jacob van Reenen in several trips to the interior. In the course of his travels the author penetrated as far as Namaqualand on the west, and the Great Fish River on the south-east. Although the principal feature of the work is a description of the botanical specimens collected and noted by Mr. Paterson, there are many interesting notes respecting the natives with a few remarks on the Dutch Colonists." (Mendelssohn, Vol. II, p.143)

        PLANTAE RARIORES VIVIS COLORIBUS DEPICTAE

Lugduni Batavorum: apud Jacobum Meerburg, 1789. Second Printing, and the First Edition in Latin . Hardcover. The Plesch Copy of a Botanical Work with 55 Distinctive Colored Plates in Japanese Style. 445 x 279 mm (17 1/2 x 11"). A2-F2, [1] leaf (complete). Second Printing, and the First Edition in Latin. Modern half sheep over contemporary boards, red morocco label. WITH 55 VERY APPEALING HAND-COLORED ETCHED PLATES of flowers and butterflies. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Arpad Plesch (see below). Dunthorne 203; Great Flower Books, p.119; Landwehr 126; Nissen BBI 1333; Stafleu & Cowan 5785. Paper boards a bit chafed, marked, and with shallow cracks at upper corners (where the covers have been quite bumped at one time), but the binding sound and, therefore, entirely satisfactory. Six or eight plates slightly toned (one or two of these tending toward brown), otherwise a fine copy internally, the text and plates clean and fresh, the engravings with clear, carefully applied colors, and the margins ample enough to qualify as Large Paper. This is an extremely pleasing copy of a large-folio flower book with illustrations of unusual beauty. While we know of no reason to explain the fact, the plates, done in the Netherlands by a Dutchman, seem remarkably Japanese in character. They are suggestive, rather than naturalistic, presenting the viewer with visual metaphors in two dimensional compositions lacking anything except rudimentary rounding or modeling. There is no use of shadow and no subtle gradations of light and dark. The engraved lines of the plant structures and the inquisitive butterflies they attract are quite apparent, but the coloration is generally toward the pastel. However this cross-fertilization took place (if, in fact, it was at work at all), the result is memorable, as the plates are large, full of tranquility, and faithful in their distinctive style. Gardener, illustrator, and botanist Nicolaas Meerburgh (1734-1814) was born in Leyden and is believed to have trained under master gardener Adriaan Steckhoven. He became curator of the Botanical Garden at the University of Leyden in 1774, and held this post until his death. The present Latin edition has five more plates than the earlier Dutch edition as well as an additional page of text. Our copy comes from the renowned library of Hungarian collector Arpad Plesch (1890-1974), whose botanical library was described by Sotheby's as "unequalled outside the great museums and institutional libraries." Both editions of this work are very difficult to obtain: ABPC lists five other copies of our edition at auction since 1975 and only one copy of the 1775 first printing (this 1775 copy was also from the Plesch library and sold three separate times, the last time in 2003 for a hammer price of £8,000, or just over $13,000). This figure is of some usefulness in determining the worth of the present volume because at the original Plesch auction in 1975, the first edition sold for the same price as our first Latin printing.

Amsterdam: Laporte, 1789. Hardcover. Contents quite clean with a minimum of foxing; occasional tear or crease rarely with any effect on an image. Bindings with edgewear, spines deteriorated; boards detached on the third volume, the front board nearly detached on the first. Bindings quite worn but contents Very Good. Four folio (10" x 16") volumes bound in calf-backed marbled boards of one of the most spectacular illustrated works of the 18th-century. Illustrated with 263 engravings, all but 1 full page and some with more than one image, and including 41 large folding plates. First published in 1723 with 223 copper engravings, this edition is enlarged and appears to be the last published in the 18th century and in folio size. The plates, many double-page, illustrate in great detail scenes of religious ceremonies, views of temples and churches, and religious costumes. This edition is not in Sabin. Bookplates of O'Connell and Adolph Grant on the pastedowns. Perhaps the best known illustrated history of religion of the 18th century, this work is especially noteworthy for its depictions of Jewish religious customs as well as a number of plates after De Bry of Native American ceremonies. ìPicart earned a place in the history of Jewish art by his realistic portrayal of Jewish religious rites. These constitute an invaluable record of Dutch Jewry in the early 18th-centuryî (ENCYCLOPEDIA JUDAICA).

[v-vii] viii, 259 [15] pp. 22 engraved plates, fold. eng. table. Lacking half-title and (possibly) initial blank, as in most presentation copies. Warrington: William Eyres for T. Cadell, J. Presentation copy, with blank leaf (possibly original initial blank) bound after the title, bearing Howard's inscription to Sir Richard Perryn, Baron of the Exchequer (1723-1803): "Mr. Howard requests Mr. Baron Perryn, will be kind enough to accept this book from him, as a small mark of his respect." Perryn's engraved bookplate on front pastedown.First Edition. Garrison-Morton 1601. Although best known as a prison reformer on the strength of his famous State of the Prisons in England and Wales (1777; see Printing and the Mind of Man 224), the English philanthropist John Howard was also concerned with the improvement of sanitary conditions in other public institutions. His work in this area represents an important link in the development of the public health movement. The present work, an investigation of the conditions of English and European hospitals (including mental hospitals and quarantine detention houses) contains both plans and notes on management and personnel; it also includes notes of Howard's latest inspections of Irish, Scottish and English prisons.Howard presented this copy of his Lazarettos to British jurist Sir Richard Perryn, who was named Baron (i.e., judge) of the Court of Exchequer in 1776. "As a judge in criminal cases Perryn seems to have been inclined to ameliorate the law's harshness" (Oxford DNB); he was thus likely to have been receptive to Howard's recommendations for prison reform. Arnold M. Muirhead, in his preface to Baumgartner's John Howard, notes that presentation copies of Howard's State of the Prisons usually have the half-title removed and a separate leaf with Howard's inscription inserted; Howard also followed this custom with the Lazarettos. Regolamento dei Regi spedali di Santa Maria Nuova di Bonifazio

Florence: Gaetano Cambiagi, 1789. Chiarugi, Vincenzo (1739-1820). Regolamento dei Regi spedali di Santa Maria Nuova di Bonifazio. 4to. lxxviii, [2], 416, [82]pp., incl. 27 charts (some folding, some double-page). Engraved title and 10 folding engraved plates (1 in facsimile). Florence: Gaetano Cambiagi, 1789. 273 x 200 mm. 19th cent. half vellum, marbled boards, light rubbing. Paper flaw in leaf oo1, otherwise fine. First Edition. In 1774, under the enlightened rule of the Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Tuscany, the first law in Europe authorizing hospital care for the insane was enacted. The following year Vincenzo Chiarugi, then senior physician at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, recommended to the Duke that the insane be relocated to the old Bonifazio Hospital, which would be renovated for the purpose; in 1788, the new Bonifazio Hospital was officially opened. Chiarugi was named physician-in-chief of the new hospital, which was dedicated to the care of insane, incurable, invalid and dermatologic patients; his humane administration with regard to the insane marked the first application of the principles of treatment that form the basis of modern psychiatry.Chiarugi required a physical examination and clinical assessment of each patient admitted, hygienic rooms with segregation of the sexes, no restraint beyond strait jacket and cotton strips, a firm but kindly attitude on the part of the staff, and no work assignments for the patients except those that would benefit their situations. When it came time to reprint the regulations of the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova (which had been issued a few years previously by Count Covoni-Girolami), the Grand Duke encouraged Chiarugi to add a section on the rules and regulations of the Bonifazio Hospital. Chiarugi's additions to this administrative manual constitute the first appearance in print of his reforms in the care of the mentally ill, preceding by four years their fuller exposition in his Della pazzia in genere, e in specie. Mora, "Chiarugi and psychiatric reform," J. Hist. Med. & Allied Sci. 14 (1959), pp 424-433. Norman 474.

Souvenirs d'un Homme du Monde. In two volumes

Paris - Maradan, 1789 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce first edition of this work by the French inventor of pasigraphy, written during the year of the French Revolution. First Edition. 'Ou recueil de penses diverses, d'observations de bons-mots, de faits singuliers, d'anecdotes & d'opuscules'. 'Memories of a man's world. Or a collection of various thoughts, observations, good words, unusual facts, anecdotes & booklets'. Volume I features an engraved frontispiece. Complete in two volumes. Joseph Maimieux(1753-1820), was a noble whoimmigrated to Germany at the time of the Revolution, returning to France in 1797. He invented pasigraphy, a 'kind of system of universal language'. Etymologically, pasigraphy means 'write everything'. In his presentation, however, probably for the sake of outreach, Joseph Maimieux defined it as 'the art of writing at all'. Some pasigraphies may be very close to the notion of ideogram (symbol representing a word or idea) and that of pictogram (concrete representation of the thing by a simplified schematic drawing). Condition: In full leather bindings. Externally, generally smart, some wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Clean with just a few scattered spots. Some slight marginal tidemarks to the first few pages. Copperplate ink signatures to titlepages. Repairs to p. 197 andp. 59 of Volume I, where there has been some loss to the text. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Paterson, there are many interesting notes respecting the natives with a few remarks on the Dutch Colonists." ESSAYS ON PHYSIOGNOMY: DESIGNED TO PROMOTE THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE LOVE OF MANKIND

London: Printed for John Murray, 1789. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH . Hardcover. 350 x 280 mm (13 3/4 x 11"). Three volumes bound in five. Translated by Henry Hunter. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Contemporary diced russia, covers with frame featuring a gilt floral chain, raised bands flanked by thick and thin gilt rules, small gilt wheel tool at the center of spine panels, gilt titling, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With three engraved title vignettes, more than 350 engraved text illustrations, and 173 ENGRAVED PLATES SHOWING HEADS OF THE GREAT AND LOWLY (three of the illustrations and one of the plates by William Blake, much of the engraved material after Henry Fuseli). Osler 3178; Wellcome III, 458; Bentley, "Blake Books" 481; Lowndes II, 1321 ("a sumptuous edition"). Joints a bit worn, three of them starting at tail, corners bumped, boards somewhat spotted, about half the plates affected by (mostly marginal) foxing, a couple dozen noticeably so, minor offsetting from engravings, other minor defects, but the text smooth and clean with ample margins, and the attractive original bindings sound and generally well preserved. This is the first appearance in English of a key work in the field of physiognomy, with four engravings by William Blake. First published in German between 1775 and 1778, Lavater's great work was translated into French by La Haye and from there into our edition, which was originally issued in 41 parts between 1789 and 1798. Our luxurious edition on fine paper was overseen by artist Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), who grew up with Lavater (1741-1801) in Zurich. The text draws heavily on the works of Italian polymath Giambattista della Porta and on the "Religio Medici" of Sir Thomas Browne, which was published in German in 1748 and much praised by Lavater. According to Britannica, this work was widely admired for its "handsome style of publication and the accompanying illustrations." The original plates were re-engraved for our edition under Fuseli's supervision, employing top English engravers, among them Blake, whose work appears in volume I (the memorable portrait of Democritus, after Rubens, bound between pp. 158 and 159, and three signed illustrations in the text on pp. 127, 206, and 225). There is significant foxing in this set--as there is in almost all copies of this first English edition--but the still-pleasing original bindings go a good distance toward compensating for this.

Printed by William Eyres, Warrington, and sold by T. Cadell, J. Johnson, C. Dilly, and J. Taylor. London. 1789 - FIRST EDITION. 4to. (11.8 x 9.7 inches). Illustrated with 22 engraved plates, 19 of them folding, plus large fold-out table. [6], 259, [13]pp. Lacking the directions to the binder leaf, presumably removed by the binder when the book was bound. Generally a clean and tidy copy but with a few gatherings, and engravings, affected by foxing. Early half brown calf binding which has been re-backed in cloth and with the calf spine re-laid with some loss, mainly to the top and bottom. Hinges cracked but holding. An interesting copy with the bookplates of three previous owners; 1. Arthur Atherley (1772 - 1844) English Member of Parliament for the Southampton constituency three times, as Whig, Liberal and Reformer. -- 2. John Farquhar Fulton (1899 - 1960) one of the three founders of the Medical Historical Library at Yale. Fulton also participated in the first clinical trials of penicillin in the United States. -- 3. Leona Baumgartner (1902 - 1991) New York City's Commissioner of Health from 1954 to 1962 when President John F. Kennedy appointed her to head the Office of Technical Cooperation and Research at A.I.D., making her the highest-ranking woman in the United States Government at the time. More importantly regarding this volume, she was also the author of JOHN HOWARD (1726-1790), Hospital & Prison Reformer: A Bibliography. 1939. Tipped in to the front free endpaper is a hand written note, dated 1934, from Fulton presenting this volume to her. There is also a typed letter, signed, by the New York Rare book dealer Herbert Reichner, dated 1944, suggesting a variant edition of Howard's Account of the Principal Lazarettos that she had not included in her book and a catalogue description of said volume plus a couple of other descriptions of copies of the book, one hand written and one printed. Not the most attracive copy but certainly one with an interesting history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind.

John Murray 1789; 1792; 1810 Complete with all blank leaves, half-titles and directions to the binder. With more than 800 engravings, including 173 copper engraved plates and 359 text images by and after Thomas Holloway, Fuseli and others, and by William Blake. Contemporary polished calf, gilt spines, front joints a bit sensitive; interior with minor foxing and off-setting of the plates as usual, but generally a tall, clean and well-margined set in excellent condition. First English edition of Volumes I and II, with the sheets of the third volume reissued by Stockdale. The work is famous for the splendid illustrations and vignettes, including the plates by William Blake. It was a classic pseudo-scientific work, extremely influential in the history of psychiatry, and represents Lavater's account of madmen, demons, and terror.
