Autograph Letter Signed, one page folio, Windsor, June 29, 1791

Ellsworth writes to William Patterson, Governor of New Jersey. In part, "You will have the goodness to excuse my troubling you a moment in behalf of an Ensign Brissel of my vicinity who has served in the Reg't. & has an arrear of pay due to him. He has been once to Philadelphia to receive it & was there informed that it had been paid to a May Heart. Mrs. Heart is now in Connecticut & informs that the money is in the hands of Capt. Beaty at New Brunswick & has drawn an order on him as you will see to pay it. I pray you to let one of your clerks call on Capt. Beaty with the order & if the money is paid upon it to transmit the money to me or keep it till I can draw for it." Written and signed in his large hand "Oliver Ellsworth." Tape repairs across two horizontal margin folds, slight edge tears. Ellsworth's most significant contribution is considered to have been accomplished while serving in the United States Senate, representing Connecticut, by drafting the Judiciary Act of 1789. The court system established then has continued to the present with little change.

n.p., London 1789 - small 8vo. full tree calf, red leather spine label. (xxviii), 122, (2) pages with a frontispiece portrait of the artist. First edition signed by the author at the end of the introduction. Dedicated to Monsieur Wille, graveur du roi de France, de L'Académie Royale de peinture et de plusiers autres académies. This copy of the book carries the signature and annotations of Franz Rechberger (1771-1841), a painter and engraver who was the personal curator of the Austrian collector, patron, and bibliophile le Comte Moritz von Fries (1777-1826). (For further information on Rechberger see Bénézit, 8 p.639, and Nagler, Die Monogrammisten II p.863.) The Comte de Fries was a patron of Ludwig van Beethoven and friend of Franz Schubert. He had amassed a collection of over 16,000 books (mostly large, illustrated works of the 18th century), 300 paintings and 100,000 drawings and prints representing all schools, before it had to be sold as a result of his bankruptcy in 1826. The collection is now dispersed throughout various public and private European collections. This book is annotated by Rechberger with notations of which prints were owned by Fries. Includes a complete catalogue of the prints and bookplates made by Schmidt. The book opens with a fine etching of Schmidt by "Wagner à Leipsic." Head and tail of spine with small chips, some rubbing to hinges. Bookplate on front pastedowns of Theodor Noderer and one indicating that this book came from the reference library and stock of H. P. Kraus. A commemorative booklabel which indicates that this set came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale is loosely inserted.         Childish Amusement

Published by William Dickinson, London 1789 - Colour-printed mezzotint. In good condition with the exception of being trimmed on the plate mark on the lower margin. Laid on to supportive backing sheet. Sheet missing some paper in the margins. Image size: 18 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches. A lovely colour printed impression of this charming print by Dickinson after the famous genre painter George Morland. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. Morland is considered a master of genre, his beautiful paintings depict with insightful subtlety the tender side of English country life. In this scene, three children playfully harass a young man who has fallen asleep on a bench in front of an ale house. It's a nicely chosen moment, just prior to the man's waking abruptly and jumping up, while the children flee in every direction. Dawe, G. Morland p. 139.

The lost Dauphin; Louis XVII. or Onwarenhiiaki, the Indian Iroquois Chief.Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent, George Allen, 1887. 8vo. With 3 collotype portraits, 1 of Louis XVII, and 2 of Eleazar Williams (1 tinted). Publisher's green textured cloth, front cover with gold-stamped portrait of a young Louis XVII.

Cf. Sabin 30267; for Williams: DAB XX, pp. 255-256; Dictionary of Wisconsin History (online ed.). Interesting work discussing the theory that the Iroquois chief and Indian missionary Eleazer Williams (ca. 1789-1858) was really the lost Dauphin Louis XVII. It was written by Augusta de Grasse Stevens (1852-1894), novelist and correspondent of various New York newspapers. The Canadian born Eleazar Williams was the son of a St. Regis Mohawk Indian, Thomas Williams, and his wife, Mary Ann Kenewatsenri. He served as a missionary of the Episcopal Church to the Oneida Indians. ''The Indians eventually repudiated his leadership, however, and as early as 1839 Williams began his pretensions that he was the Lost Dauphin of France, Louis XVIII. ... Williams promised his friends many royal favors when his wrong had been righted; but, doomed to defeat, he died in poverty and obscurity at Hogansburg, NY'' (Dictionary of Wisconsin History).Lacking half-title but otherwise in good condition. Hinges weak and endpapers browned. Important work for the history of Wisconsin and the Oneida.

Opera. [Sancti Brunonis Astensi Episcopi Signiensium et Abbatis Montis Casini Opera in Duos Tomos Distributa aucta et Adnotationibus Illustrata Regiae Celsitudini Caroli Emmanuelis Pedemontii Principis &c. &c.]

Romae,: Joannis Zempel,, 1789-1791.. Original parchment with gilt lettering on spine. Former copy of St.Joseph's College Mill Hill Library.. Folio.. Brunonis Astensis - (ca. 1040/1050-1123) Initial studies at the Benedictine monastery of S. Perpetua in Asti, where he studied humanities and prepared for the ecclesiastical life; then, he went to study the seven liberal arts at the University of Bologna. He decided to enter the monastery of Monte Cassino but during the trip, he became ill in Siena and the local bishop, Rodolfo, named him canon of the cathedral chapter. Because of his knowledge and piety, he was called to Rome, where he was advisor to four popes. Participated in a Roman synod in 1079; there, he convinced Berengarius of Tours to retract his heresy which denied the real presence of the Lord in the Holy Eucharist; the disputation between the canon and the heretic took place before Pope Gregory VII. Elected bishop of Segni in 1079 (2) by its canons; he accepted after an intervention of Pope Gregory VII. Consecrated in 1080, Campagna of Rome, by Pope Gregory VII. In 1082, returning to Segni from Rome, he was imprisoned by Adolfo di Segni; tradition says that he was miraculously freed. Returned to Rome and there he was imprisoned, together with the pope in mole Adriana (castle of Sant'Angelo). Librarian and chancellor of the Holy Roman Church in 1086. Created cardinal bishop of Segni in a consistory celebrated in 1086 (3). Participated in the papal election of 1088, celebrated in Terracina, in which Pope Urban II was elected. Subscribed papal bulls issued between 1089 and July 20, 1096. In 1095, he accompanied Pope Urban II to the Council of Clermont, in which the First Crusade was called; he went with the pontiff to Avignon Tarasco on September 11, 1095; to Avignon on September 13; to Cluny on October 25; to Clermont on November 18 (he participated in the council celebrated in that city); to Limoges, December 23 to 31; to Charroux, where he participated in the consecration of the abbatial church, on January 10, 1096; to Poitiers on January 22; to Moyenmoutier on March 10; to Tours on March 14 to 20 (he participated in the council celebrated in that city); to Poitiers from March 30 and before April 14; to Nîmes on July 12; and to St.-Gilles on July 20. Did not participate in the papal election of 1099, in which Pope Paschal II was elected. Subscribed papal bulls issued between August 30, 1100 and November 2, 1106. In 1103, he entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) at the monastery of Monte Cassino; he was elected abbot in November 1107, keeping his episcopal see. He was sent to France as legate in 1104. In March 1105, during the Lateran Synod, he acted as a judge in a controversy. On September 8 of the same year, he was with the pope in Civita Castellana. He returned to France as legate in 1106. On November 2, 1106, he was in Parma with the pope. On June 4, 1109, Pope Paschal II went to Segni to canonize Bishop Pietro of Anagni, friend of Cardinal Bruno, and most probably, the cardinal was present at the ceremony. He opposed lay investitures of bishops and abbot, even declaring them to be heresy; he criticized Pope Paschal II for granting Emperor Heinrich the privilege of investitures during the pontiff's imprisonment by the emperor April 11, 1111 and demanded that the treaty be annulled. On March 23, 1112, during the Lateran Synod, Pope Paschal II rejected the granting of the privilege of investitures to Emperor Heinrich V; the bishop of Segni was not present at that session of the synod and he continued with his intransgent position; unhappy with the bishop's opposition, the pope asked him resign his abbey and to return to his see of Segni definitively. He participated in the Lateran synod of 1116, but never regained his earlier position in the papal curia. He wrote commentaries on thirteen books of the Holy Bible; a life of Pope St. Leo IX; and one of St. Pietro, bishop of Anagni; a treatise on the Sacraments; and another one on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; 145 of his homilies and six books of sentences are still preserved.         The Writings and Speeches of Edmund Burke Volume VII India The Hastings Trial 1789-1794 Writings Speeches of Edmund Burke

Oxford University Press. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 744 pages. Dimensions: 9.4in. x 6.3in. x 2.0in.This key volume specifically completes the collection of Edmund Burkes Indian Writings and Speeches which is set within the series, and is both an exposition of Burkes views on India from his coverage of the Hastings trial, and his views on maintaining the rule of a universal justice. The texts for the items, which have appeared in previous editions of Burkes Works, have been reconstructed, largely by the use of manuscripts. Indeed many of the shorter speeches appear here in print for the first time. The volume includes a key speech which introduced one of the main charges in the trial of Warren Hastings on an impeachment from 1789-1794, and an important report on the conduct of the trial. It closes with Burkes important and detailed summation of the prosecutions. However, this volume is not only a full exposition of Burkes views on India but contains much of great interest about other aspects of his thought. In particular, Burke saw himself in these years as being engaged in a battle against the lawless disruption of society, both in Europe and in Asia, in order to maintain the rule of a universal justice, a main theme of this volume. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN, Momence,IL, Commerce,GA.

Justifications for Devouring our Fellow Creatures!!

?London: n.d., circa, 1789. Broadside, folio, 440 x 275 mm., text in double columns; all edges uncut; framed. An Hawaiian "modest proposal" Extremely rare satirical broadside, using an extended Hawaiian metaphor. Published in the 1780s, within a few years of Cook's discovery of the islands and subsequent death, it exploits the exotic setting of Hawaii and the implications of cannibalism still fresh in the public's mind from the gruesome details then abounding in stories of Cook's death.Detailing fourteen long points about Hawaiian cannibalism, it follows the principles of Swift's "Modest Proposal" by reducing to absurdity the supposed advantages of eating one's fellow man as a means to attack economic dogma and, apparently, the practices of the slave trade. It may not be easy now to follow the satire's precise purpose, but as Forbes points out, 'although its exact intent remains undetermined, this sheet is evidence of how firmly fixed the location of Hawaii (however exotic) would have been in the minds of its intended audience...'.This copy is inscribed "Presented by Mr. Hollis" and dated 1791 in manuscript, while the copy in the British Library has contemporary annotations "E.J." & "June 1789" along with a single manuscript correction to the text.Forbes records this copy (noted as 'now in a private collection') and could identify only two others (British Library and Public Record Office). ESTC records three further copies (John Rylands Library, Göttingen University and New York Historical Society). There is thus no copy recorded in any Hawaiian library.
