Corona Gótica y asutriaca dividida en quatro partes

Madrid, Benito Cano 1789 - 8º menor (14,5 x 9,8 cm.) 7 tomos. A journey through the Crimea to Constantinople. In a series of letters from the right honourable Elizabeth Lady Craven, to his serene highness the Margrave of Brandenbourg, Anspach, and Bareith. Written in the year M DCC LXXXVI

      G. G. J. and J. Robinson, London 1789 - 4to. [viii], 327, [1] pp With folding frontispiece map and 6 plates (1 folding). Complete, including half title and directions to the binder on the final page. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked, with new morocco spine label and endpapers, marbled edges; plates contain some toning and foxing with offsetting, otherwise a very attractive, clean copy First edition. As though separating from your husband weren’t bad enough in the late nineteenth century, reports of numerous infidelities with high ranking men would certainly place you at the center of gossip and scandal. Such was the case of Lady Craven, whose indiscretions, including a ‘criminal intercourse’ with the French Ambassador in London, made her a somewhat notorious character in European high society. After separating from Lord Craven in 1783, Elizabeth left her native England and traveled extensively in France, Italy, Vienna, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Turkey, and points in-between. The present book is an account of these travels, published at the suggestion of her friend and admirer, Horace Walpole, in 1789. "This is her most important work, and it exploits to the full the gossipy and self-vindicating scope of first-person travelogue. She describes manners, customs, and landscapes, pronounces Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's favourable account of Turkey a forgery, and constructs a self-image of redoubtable British vigour as well as devoted and injured motherhood" (ODNB). As was common in travelogues of this time period, the book is composed of a series of letters. The original recipient of these missives was the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Bayreuth (Christian Frederick Charles Alexander), a man she affectionately calls "brother" in the preface. A brother he was not; the couple married in late 1791, mere weeks after the death of Elizabeth’s estranged husband. Having sold his principality to the Emperor of Prussia for a tidy sum, the Margrave and Margravine Anspach lived comfortably in England, though due to their scandalous relationship they were not received in the court of George III. Despite raised eyebrows surrounding her personal life, the Magravine’s travelogue proved successful and saw a second extended edition published in 1814.Craven (1750-1828) wrote numerous satirical plays in addition to her famous travelogue. Both talented and beautiful, she had her portrait painted many times by notable artists of the day, including Romney, Gainsborough, and Reynolds. After the Margrave’s death, Craven retired to Naples and produced one final work, a frank and somewhat shocking memoir published in 1826. [Attributes: First Edition]

A System of the Law of Marine Insurances: With Three Chapters on Bottomry; on Insurances of Lives; and on Insurances against Fire

Joseph Crukshank, Philadelphia, (PA) 1789 - First American edition. 8vo. xvi, (8) xliv, 530, (45) pp. Francis Hopkinson's copy, with his ownership signature at the head of the title page and his armorial bookplate on the front pastedown; Hopkinson (1737-1791), lawyer, judge, merchant, author, musician, and Signer of the Declaration of Independence, was born in Philadelphia and was the first to earn a diploma at the College of Philadelphia, in 1757. After reading law and spending a year in England, he published a good bit of music and poetry in the 1760s; by late 1773 he had moved to Bordentown, New Jersey, where he took up the law again and rose rapidly, being elected to the Continental Congress in 1776 and signing the Declaration of Independence with other members in July. During the war he held important administrative offices and saw his house in Bordentown plundered by the British. "Though he was not preeminent in any one field the bulk of his attainments is sufficient to make his place in American history secure" (DAB). First published in London, 1787, Park's was the first legal work on insurance written by an English lawyer and the first book on the subject to appear in America. Holdsworth called it "the best text-book upon the law of insurance." A work of great authority, it went through numerous English and American editions and remained the standard text until the middle of the nineteenth century. Evans 22048. Holdsworth "History of English Law" XII, 390. Cohen "Bibliography of Early American Law" 7071. Hinges a little cracked, joints just starting to crack at ends, but a sound copy with an appealing association, the copy of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence who spent some ten years as a judge on various American admiralty courts. Contemporary calf, (rubbed, a little chipping at head of spine, corners bumped), gilt rules and leather label on spine. (#6450) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A General History of Music, from the Earliest Ages to the Present Period

London: Printed for the author and sold by Payne and Son, 1789. Second Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good. 4 volumes. xviii, 501; 597; xi, 622; 688 p. 9 plates plus extensive examples of notation. Rebound. Bookplate and discreet library markings. Mild to moderate foxing. A composer and musician, Burney started to think about writing this history of music while an organist in Norfolk. Honoured by Oxford University in 1769, his many successes did not distract from this main writing goal. The first volume, published in 1776, was immediately well received. His biggest successes may have been his children, however; his eldest daughter was a harpsichord child prodigy, one son became a distinguished officer in the Royal Navy, another son was a well-known clergyman, and a daughter became the famous author Madame D'Arblay.

A Catalogue of the Books belonging to the Library Company of Philadelphia; to which is prefixed, a Short Account of the Institution, with the Charter, Laws and Regulations

xl, 406 pp., one leaf of errata. 8vo, mid-19th-cent. half-morocco & marbled boards (two ink stains to upper cover), spine gilt. Philadelphia: Z. Poulson, 1789. The first of the modern catalogues describing the book collections of the Library Company of Philadelphia. Founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin, it was the first subscription library established in North America. From the Revolutionary War to 1800, when the national government was in Philadelphia, the Library Company also served as the Library of Congress. Until the 1850s it was the largest public library in America. The earliest surviving catalogue of the collection was issued in 1741. That catalogue and the subsequent pre-Revolutionary War catalogues, issued in 1757, 1764, and 1770, were all arranged in an extremely inconvenient method, preventing readers from identifying books they wanted. When the printer and newspaper publisher Zachariah Poulson, Jr. became the librarian in 1785, he compiled and printed the present indexed catalogue. The arrangement of this catalogue was greatly influenced by the Enlightenment. We learn from the "Advertisement" that "in conformity to the general delineation of human science, laid down by Bacon, and afterwards illustrated and enlarged by D'Alembert, the books have been divided into three classes, corresponding with the three great divisions of the mental faculties -- Memory, Reason and Imagination." This arrangement was greatly facilitated by an excellent author index at the end. Fine copy. Early signature of "Th. Muendemann (?)." ❧ Winans 131. .

An Essay to Direct and Extend the Inquiries of Patriotic Travellers; with further observations on the means of preserving the life, health, & property of the Unexperienced

London: Printed for the Author, and Sold By Mr. Robinson, Mr Debrett, Mr Payne..., 1789. [2], xxviii, 526. [2], vi, [2], ii, 283pp. Engraved frontispiece to Vol I, both titles engraved, five folding tables. Contemporary sheep, gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering pieces. Splitting to now strengthened joints. Chipping to head and foot of each spine, bumping to corners. Internally immaculate. A fascinatingly unusual late eighteenth century manual for intellectual European travel, composed by the Moravian philanthropist and man of letters Count Leopold von Berchtold (1759-1809), who was described by Southey in a letter to Cottle (c.1796) as 'one of those rare characters who spend their lives in doing good, it is his custom in every country he visits to publish books in its language on some subject of practical utility - these he gave away'. Consisting of two distinct parts, the first volume outlines a general methodology for the inquisitve traveller before launching into more than four hundred pages of questions pertinent to understanding the political, social, economic, cultural and educational situation of the nation visited, whilst the second forms an extensive bibliography of English and Continental travel works. The student of the Berchtold methodology was encouraged to note down the responses to the most important of the thousands of questions, ranging in topic from 'Law and Government', 'Philanthrophic Society' and 'State of the Peasanty to 'Navigation upon the Sea' to 'Finance' and 'Navy', in the tables provided. A student of the Berchtold method, if not arrested on suspicion of espionage, would surely have gained a more rounded appreciation of the state of Europe than most Grand Tourists. Rare in commerce, with no copy appearing in the rooms since 1978. ESTC T89033.. First Edition. 8vo.

        Mrs Goodall

London: Published by R. Sayer & Co. Fleet Street, 1789. Stipple, colour printed a la poupée. Printed on wove paper. Collectors blindstamp of a star in left margin. Collectors mark not identified in Lugt but attributed to the eighteenth century. In excellent condition. This charming colour-printed portrait by Robert Laurie depicts the celebrated actress Charlotte Goodall in the character of Adeline in "The Battle of Hexham". Charlotte Goodall (1766-1830) was the daughter of Stanton, who managed a "sharing company" in Staffordshire. She joined the stage at an early age, and made her first successful début in Bath as Rosalind in "As You Like It." She made a name for herself as a Shakespearean actress in the provinces and quickly joined Kemble's Drury Lane theatre in London. She was primarily a supporting actress, working with such noted thespians as Mrs. Farren and Mrs. Jordan, but she was known for her roles in "breechers parts," playing such noted cross-dressers as Viola in "Twelfth Night," and Adeline in George Coleman's "The Battle of Hexham." It is in this celebrated role, as the cross-dressing Adeline, that Laurie depicts Mrs. Goodall. "The Battle of Hexham" was a three-act musical drama in which an abandoned wife, Adeline, disguises herself as a soldier in order to search for her fugitive husband, Gondibert.         Autograph Letter Signed, one page folio, Windsor, June 29, 1791

Ellsworth writes to William Patterson, Governor of New Jersey. In part, "You will have the goodness to excuse my troubling you a moment in behalf of an Ensign Brissel of my vicinity who has served in the Reg't. & has an arrear of pay due to him. He has been once to Philadelphia to receive it & was there informed that it had been paid to a May Heart. Mrs. Heart is now in Connecticut & informs that the money is in the hands of Capt. Beaty at New Brunswick & has drawn an order on him as you will see to pay it. I pray you to let one of your clerks call on Capt. Beaty with the order & if the money is paid upon it to transmit the money to me or keep it till I can draw for it." Written and signed in his large hand "Oliver Ellsworth." Tape repairs across two horizontal margin folds, slight edge tears. Ellsworth's most significant contribution is considered to have been accomplished while serving in the United States Senate, representing Connecticut, by drafting the Judiciary Act of 1789. The court system established then has continued to the present with little change.
