An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1789. First American edition of the author's magnum opus. Small octavo, 3 volumes, contemporary calf, rebacked. In near fine condition. From the library of Malcolm Forbes. Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "Adam Smith's enormous authority resides, in the end, in the same property that we discover in Marx: not in any ideology, but in an effort to see to the bottom of things" (Robert L. Heilbroner).

Monographia staphylinorum Sveciæ. + Monographia caraborum Sveciæ. + Monographia curculionum Sveciæ.

1789 - Uppsala, J. Edman, 1789. 8:o. (12),81,(1) pp. + Uppsala, J. Edman, 1790. 8:o. 138 pp. + Uppsala, J. Edman, 1792. 8:o. (8),151,(1) pp. Uncut and sewn in contemporary grey paper wrappers, worn, with MS title. Spine partly defective, wrappers partly soiled. Occasional browning and soiling, pp. 7-10 loose in the second work, minor tear in outer margin of the last work. Contemporary MS note stating that the volume is a gift from the author. Signature. Gustaf von Paykull (1757-1826) was torn between a literary and a scientific career, but after having received the scolding remark that he was one of the foremost among Sweden's second-rate poets, he decided to devote more time to science. As an entomologist he published some ten to twenty findings in the transactions of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and separately, among other things, the present works, which are beautifully printed by Edman in Uppsala. Paykull was made a baron in 1818 as a thank you gesture for donating his large collection of natural history specimens to the Swedish Academy of Sciences, where it formed the basis of Naturhistoriska riksmuseet [The Natural History Museum].         [MANUSCRIPT LETTER, SIGNED BY FENWICK MASON, GEORGE WASHINGTON'S WINE MERCHANT, REGARDING AN ORDER OF WINE]

Bordeaux, 1789. Folio, on a folded sheet. Old folds. Old tape along lower half of left margin on first page. Some light soiling and wear at edges. Very good. Letter written to President George Washington by his wine merchants in Bordeaux, signed by agent Fenwick Mason, referring to various wines ordered by Washington, consisting of "26 dozen claret and 12 dozen vins de grave." Mason writes, in part: "We have taken much pains to procure this wine and are well persuaded it is the best to be had but we fear it (the claret particularly) may not be found fit for drinking immediately tho' it is old pure & of one of the first growths since it has just been bottled. As the best wine is always bought in cask, we beg leave to recommend to you to order always somewhat in advance that it may lie 6 or 8 months in bottle to ripen. In our last we told you that no good Champagne wine is to be had here, except when expressly ordered from that place, but a friend of ours at Rheims from whence that wine is sent, has spared us a case of 2 doz bottles (1 doz white sparkling & 1 doz still red) both of the best quality which we take the liberty to send you as a sample. If you find it pleasing we can always supply you by having timely orders. It will require two months to have it prepared and brought to this place. The principal objection is the expence of land carriage, which is heavy. The claret exceeds by a few bottles your orders, as it is in cases of 25 bottles we could not make the numbers nearer." Understandably, Washington would have quite a bit of entertaining to do as president and good wines were obviously necessary. An interesting letter, highlighting the cellars at the White House and the transatlantic means by which one ordered wine in the 18th century.

« Sir James Steuart had misfortune to be followed by Adam Smith in less than a decade. Otherwise, his work would probably have served as the standard English economic text » (Carpenter, Economic Bestsellers, p. 20).

Legatura coeva in cartone. Fr. Mateo Ximenez.

Rome: Stamperia Salomoni I: 4to (24.2 cm, 9.5"). xvi pp., port., 228 pp., [1] f. II: 4to (23.5 cm, 9.125"). Engr. title, [100] of [129] plts.. 1789 From humble carter to revered and beatified lay Franciscan is not an easy course to pursue in life, but Sebastián de Aparicio (1502–1600) accomplished it in Mexico. Although he was married multiple times, he is said to have remained chaste, deciding in 1574 to abandon his secular lifestyle for that of a lay Franciscan. He is said to have had great ability to manage and calm animals, including near-wild bulls. His life was filled with teaching, begging, and accomplishing near-impossible things. => Offered here is the first edition of Ximénez's biography of this beatified Mexican and the fine album of plates illustrating events in his life (see our caption, above). Finding the "life" and the volume of plates together is uncommon. Only by happenstance did the two volumes come to us within months of one another, from two different continents, allowing us to marry them for this offering. For example, in the U.S., only the Lilly and Bancroft Libraries report owning both works. There is some question as to the number of plates in a complete copy of the Colección: Some sources call for an engraved title-page and 128 plates, while others call for 129 plates. There seems not to have been an edition of the Vita in Spanish. Vita: Contemporary Italian binding of quarter leather with "wallpaper" covered boards; edges of boards seriously rubbed and exposing underlying paste boards. Internally very good. Colección: 20th-century Spanish quarter leather, with paper in imitation of treed calf on the covers. Private ownership stamps on title-page. Missing 29 plates; the other hundred in very good condition.

DISCOURS PRONONCE A L'ASSEMBLEE GENERALE DE LA PARTIE DU NORD, LE 28 OCTOBRE 1789, PAR M. GATERAU [caption title]

[Cap Français], 1789. single folded sheet. Minor soiling. Untrimmed. Near fine. This imprint consists of a speech made to the Northern General Assembly, based in the leading city of the colony, Cap Francais, criticising a list of grievances filed by the colony of Saint Domingue. Of particular interest is an article regarding the inherent superiority of the upper class, particularly plantation owners, which the speaker denigrates as bestowing an arbitrary power and dignity on them. These "doleances" (complaints) came from the small planters who were ready to use the French Revolution to attack the grand planters, causing the hierarchy of the colony to deteriorate rapidly. This served as a precursor to the devastating slave revolt which soon followed. A rare imprint, evidently unrecorded.

Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind ... illustrated by more than eight hundred engravings accurately copied; and some duplicates added from originals.

London: Printed for John Murray, No. 32, Fleet-Street; H. Hunter, D.D. Charles's-Square; and T. Holloway, No. 11, Bache's-Row, Hoxton 4to in 2's (34.1 cm, 13.4"). 3 vols. in 5. I: [11] ff., iv, [10], 281 pp. (i.e., 285); 15 plates. II, part 1: xii, 238 pp.; 45 plates. II, part 2: [3] ff., pp. [239]–444; 47 plates. III, pt. 1: xii, 252 pp.; 25 plates. III, pt. 2: [3] ff., pp. 253-437 (i.e., 181 pp.), [9] pp.; 42 plates.. 1789–98 First edition in English of => Lavater's study of character based on physical attributes. Originally published in German (Physiognomische Fragmente, 1775–78), these influential Essays were translated into English by Henry Hunter (1741–1802) from the subsequent French edition (La Haye, 1781-87), and published in 41 parts under the direction of Royal Academy artists Henry Fuseli (1741–1825) and Thomas Holloway (1748–1827), who both contributed illustrations. In fact, Lavater (1741–1801), a Swiss priest and poet, had no part in the new publication; Hunter arranged the endeavor with Holloway and publisher John Murray without the consent of the author, who learned of the project after it had gone to press, and objected, fearing a new edition would subtract from sales of the old. These books contain => over 360 engraved illustrations in the text and => 132 full-page engraved plates, many of which Holloway copied directly from the French edition; it's the multiple images on the full-page plates that produce the proud claim of "more than 800 engravings" on the title-page. They include => portraits of famous wrinkled writers, philosophers, musicians, monarchs, statesmen, and Lavater himself; silhouettes of Jesus and portraits of Mary; details of male, female, and animal attributes; and skulls, hairlines, eyes, noses, and mouths, among other features, engraved by Holloway, Fuseli, William Blake (1757–1827), James Neagle (1765–1822), Anker Smith (1759–1819), James Caldwall (1739–ca. 1819), Isaac Taylor (1730–1807), and William Sharp (1749–1824), inter alios, after works of art by Rubens, Van Dyke, Raphael, Fuseli, LeBrun, Daniel Chodowiecki (1726–1801). The commentary on these images makes this a work of => art history/criticism, as Lavater is both free and detailed in his notes of how various artists handle details of physiognomy and body language to express character and engender beauty. The first systematic treatise on physiognomy was written by Aristotle. Publications on the subject continued steadily throughout the ages, although the developing study of anatomy in the 17th century detracted interest from what later came to be known as pseudoscience. Lavater's is the only notable treatise in the 18th century, and indeed, ". . . [his] name would be forgotten but for [this] work," which was very popular in France, Germany, and England (EB). Provenance: Bookplate of Nicholas Power on front pastedown of all five volumes (related to Richard Power, Esq., of Ireland, listed as a subscriber?); and bookplate of Gordon Abbott on front free endpaper of three volumes, engraved by J.W. Spenceley of Boston in 1905. Contemporary calf ruled and tooled in gilt and blind with gilt board edges and gilt turn-ins, rebacked old style; marbled edges, and blue silk marker in all volumes. Extremities rubbed and corners bumped with small loss to leather. At least one small marginal tear in each volume; offsetting from letterpress on a few leaves; very mild to quite moderate foxing (or none) on illustrations, offset onto surrounding leaves; and other occasional minor stains. Most plates protected by tissue. => A monument of labor, art, and excellent "system" devoted to an exploded but fascinating theory; in fact, a wonder.

[PRINTED RECEIPT FOR SUBSCRIPTION FEE FOR SORTIE OF GIBRALTAR]

[London?], 1789. 1 sheet measuring 3 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches, mounted on cardboard backing. Old fold lines. Near fine. Receipt for a print of one of Trumbull's most famous historical paintings, "The Sortie Made by the Garrison of Gibraltar, 27 November 1781." The receipt reads: "Received the 16th Day of June, 1789, from Rev. Dr. Davis the Sum of Three guineas, being One Half of the Subscription for a Proof Print of the Sortie of Gibraltar, which We promise to deliver, according to the Proposals. [signed] J.Cracknell, Jno. Trumbull, Willm. Sharp." The receipt bears an embossed notary seal. Trumbull had been, up to this point, primarily painting scenes from the American Revolution. Being in England, and finding his Revolutionary scenes none too popular in that venue, he undertook to celebrate a British feat of arms, producing this masterful work. Hailed as the official painter of the Revolution, Trumbull studied painting and art in England and France. The youngest son of the governor of Connecticut, the elder John Trumbull very much wanted his son to go into law. Trumbull did study the law, but gladly joined the fight against the British when the Revolution broke out. He eventually served as Washington's second aide-de- campe, having been brought to the General's attention through some very accurate drawings he had made of British gun emplacements. He rose to the rank of colonel as a deputy adjutant-general, but resigned the commission he finally received because it was dated three months late, a slight his honor could not stand. He refused to return to the law, finding it quite distasteful and chose instead to pursue his true passion, art, against his family's wishes. Though he was never particularly wealthy in this pursuit, he did achieve a certain amount of success in his own lifetime. Among his most famous works are those commissioned in 1817 by Congress to adorn the Capitol building: "The Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga," "The Surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown," "The Declaration of Independence," and "The Resignation of General Washington."         Reales exequias, que por el fallecimiento del señor don Carlos III, rey de España y de las Indias, mando celebrar en la ciudad de Lima.

Lima: En la Imprenta Real de los Niños Expósitos Folio. [2] ff., 169, [1 (blank)] pp., [1] f., 50 pp., fold. plt.. 1789 Fr. Rico, an Oratorian, describes the memorial services in Lima on the occasion of the death of King Carlos III, as well as the commemorative art work and its Neo-Latin epigraphs. Fray Bernardo Rueda's "Oracion funebre que en las solemnes exequias del Rey nuestro señor don Carlos III" has a sectional title-page and its own pagination. The folding plate is of =>the funeral monument erected in the king's memory. It is an extremely well executed, large engraving, signed by Vazquez and dated at Lima, 1789. NUC and WorldCat locate only three copies in the U.S. Searches of CCPB and the OPAC of the Spanish national library locate three Spanish libraries reporting ownership; COPAC finds no copies in Britain. => The number of "splendid ceremonies" books produced in colonial Peru is small: There is no census but we suspect the number to be around 20. Other interesting aspects of the work are that it is an important source on the social and artistic life of Lima in the decade following the Tupac Amaru rebellion and that it is from one of Latin America's famous presses of "orphan children. Contemporary limp vellum with neatly inked title on spine; all edges inked decoratively. Old blurred stamp on front free endpaper, old single numerals very faintly on title-pages. Small tear in margin of plate, not into image. Overall a very good copy, very clean and with wide margins.

[Cap Français], 1789. single sheet. Minor toning. Untrimmed. Very good. A defense of the importance of France's colonies, with a particular emphasis on the business and economic values, by the Marquis d'Aussigne. He warns of the consequences of a split between France and its Caribbean colonies, urging the French National Assembly to allow provincial administrations in the provinces. This desperate attempt to maintain aristocratic control over France's colonies came at the emergence of the Revolution and is a significant example of the futile attempts of the large planter class to preserve power and order. Apparently unrecorded.

New York: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1789. Folio. 19th-century three quarter roan and marbled boards, spine gilt. Hinges and extremities worn, roan stripped in places. Large, old stain on titlepage and slighter staining on following eight leaves. Upper right corner of pages 3-4 and 122-123 torn away, slightly affecting text. The bulk of the text is crisp and clean. Good. Lacks the final forty-two pages and index pages clxv-clxxvii. The original collected printing of the Journal for the first session of the House of Representatives. This volume covers the activities of the House from March 4 to Sept. 7, 1789, a period in which many important legislative events took place. Foremost among these was the discussion of the proposed Bill of Rights. Pages 102- 105 contain some fine tuning of the language of some of the seventeen amendments originally proposed by the House, adoption of which was later defeated by the Senate. Numerous references to individual parts of the Bill of Rights are made throughout the first volume as well. The remainder of the Journal for the first session contains much of the important legislative foundation for the machinery of government, regulating the Customs, Judiciary, Post Office, Mint, and the like. An important and valuable volume in the history of American government, recording all manner of legislative activities from the earliest days of the federal government. EVANS 22208.
