BECKFORD, William.]
London: for J. Johnson, 1786. London: for J. Johnson,, 1786. with Notes Critical and Explanatory. Octavo (197 x 117 mm). Early 19th-century red straight-grain morocco, smooth spine divided into compartments by single gilt rules either side of a dotted rule, lettered in gilt and placed and dated at foot, sides with a thicker gilt rule all round and circlets at corners, single gilt rule to board edges, gilt roll to turn-ins, Gloster pattern marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Discreet book label of Sir Robert and Diana Abdy. Extremities a little rubbed, an excellent copy, the binding unsigned but noticeably quality work. First edition. Beckford's oriental novel, Vathek, was written in French between January and May 1782. This English translation by the literary scholar Samuel Henley was published first in June 1786, despite Beckford's express wish that the French edition should precede it. The latter was published in Lausanne in December 1786 (postdated 1787), with signs of hasty reconstruction from an earlier draft. Though angered by the piracy, Beckford appreciated Henley's expertise as an orientalist and retained his notes in later editions. Vathek remains a classic of British Gothic fiction, alongside Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, Ann Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho, and M. G. Lewis's The Monk. It was Byron's favourite book. He described himself as "a strenuous and public admirer" of the book, and it was an evident influence on his "Turkish Tales", The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos, The Corsair, Lara, The Siege of Corinth, and Parisina, poems that consolidated Byron's fa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Motte-Fouqué, Friedrich de la:
1 Seite (24 Zeilen). Auf fein geripptem Papier. Begleitschreiben zur eiligen Übersendung des Manuskripts der für die Romantik zentralen Erzählung "Paul Pommer, Scenen aus dem Leben eines preußischen Invaliden" an Schriftsteller, Holzstecher und Herausgeber Friedrich Wilhelm Gubitz (1786-1870), Professor der Königlichen Akademie der Künste in Berlin. - "Euer Wohlgeboren erhalten beiliegend endlich meinen Paul Pommer. Smith, Adam
Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand, London, 1786. THE BASIS OF ALL MODERN EDITIONS OF THE WEALTH… Fourth edition… Three volumes… Octavo (8 1/4” x 5”, 210mm x 128mm)… Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf. On the spine, seven gilt bands (a thick gilt fillet surrounded my gilt dashed rolls) making six compartments. Title gilt to red crushed morocco in the second panel. Number gilt within a gilt oval in the fourth panel. Edges of the text-block sprinkled red. Spine label of vol. 1 partly perished (NOT visible in photo). Hinges cracked; the front board of vol. 1 is tender; otherwise the volumes are fairly robust. Fore-corners bumped and worn in places. Toning from turn-downs to first and last few pages. Generally, though, very little foxing indeed. With lovely margins (identical to the Kress copy); fore-deckle preserved in all volumes (1: Ii2, 2: Aa1, 3: Y3 etc.), with one unopened pair of leaves (vol. 2, Bb7.8). Entirely unsophisticated, unlike nearly every copy known to us to be for sale. With the armorial bookplates of Gordon of Aikenhead on the front paste-down of each volume; ownership signature of John Gordon on the title-page of vol. 1. Smith revised the Wealth, first published 1776, four times before his death in 1790. This third revision is not as substantial as the second (third edition, 1784); its preface acknowledges the assistance of Henry Hop, whose help allowed Smith to write on “the Bank of Amsterdam ; of which no printed account had ever appeared to me satisfactory, or even intelligible” (vol. 1, p. iv [A2v]). London: For J. Jonson, 1786. First Edition. Octavo. . Engraved frontispiece, 431pp., (1)pp directions to the binder and a short list of the author's other works, Contains 20 plates: 19 copper engraved plates (most folding) and 1 engraved map. The author was a professor of mathematics and author of several mathematical work. He believed that the approach to geometry exhibited by Euclid provided an outstanding method for teaching young people logical and precise thinking and he followed his work closely. His greatest mathematical contributions were The Scholar's Guide to Arithmetic (1780) and Algebra (1782). He had written several other works. The previous original owner had written notations within the margins correcting a few paragraphs or mathematical equations of the author's work. Page 183 he writes in a very neat hand "The following account is copied verbatim from Ferguson who is here free from embarrassment as in most other cases", on page 74 he makes corrections to the author's word "circulations" and writes "revolutions". Page 46 he writes " Ferguson says in page 339sect. 360 that the whiteness of the milky way is owing to some other cause than what is here assigned". There are also a few mathematical equations he had corrected or agreed with. We cannot desipher the previous owner's name his the last name is Taylor and he noted attending to King's College. While the book had been rebound, probably mid 20th century or earlier in full calf, internally the books is fresh and bright, no foxing, plates are in beautiful condition. An excellent copy.

Girls' Education)
1786. Colored silk and wool threads on linen, signed "M. Hume". With compass rose and floral cartouche. 19 x 14-1/2 inches. A nice example of an embroidered map sampler, which were an important component of girls' education in Britain and America from 1770-1840. This one meticulously labels all of the English counties, the seas and channels, and includes part of Scotland to the north, and the east coast of Ireland, and is signed by its maker, one M. Hume of Bristol. "One academic subject that was consistently considered important for both boys and girls, after reading, writing and arithmetic, was geography. Geography was considered a science at this time, and . it was the first science taught to girls in the US . Many girls were taught to read, but not write. With the exception of some diaries or letters or of marginalia, there is little to tell us how children learned to read, do arithmetic or write. Map samplers . by students are tangible examples of women's schoolwork. These were time-consuming projects, normally framed and hung with pride to show a young lady's educational attainments" (Tyner, Stitching the World). Toning, some wear around edges, losses to lettering in several spots. In later frame Colored silk and wool threads on linen, signed "M. Hume". With compass rose and floral cartouche. 19 x 14-1/2 inches [Attributes: Signed Copy]

STRASBOURG]

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 85. Thick good quality paper, plus a final large and attractive folding plate showing an enormous fossil elephant tooth from the collection of Count Giovanni Battista Gazzola (1757-1834). Bound in contemporary pasteboard covered with marbled paper. Ink title on paper label glued to spine, a little worn. Binding still holding tight the book block. An excellent copy of a curious natural historical work. Known mostly for his "Travels into Dalmatia" (1774), Alberto Fortis (1741–1803), was a Venetian abbot, writer, naturalist and cartographer. In 1795 Fortis was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in London. His addressee, the German Joseph Paul Edler of Cobres, was born as Giuseppe Paolo Cobres (between 1737 and 1749 - 1823 in Göggingen) in the Republic of Venice. He later became a banker, private scholar, naturalist in Augsburg and a member of the Berlin Society of Friends of Natural Science. This work is an account of curious findings found in the area of Verona by the Abbot Fortis, on the mountains of Romagnano. The final plates shows one of the about 1200 specimens, mainly fossils of fishes, in the personal museum of Count Giovanni Battista Gazzola. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Pluquet, l'Abbé
Paris, chez Barrois, 1786. . Two volumes in 12mo; pp. (4), 488; pp. (4), 508; contemporary speckled calf, raised bands, spine ends and one corner with small and skillful restorations, spines gilt in compartment with two contrasting gilt lettering-pieces, red edges, marbled endpapers, mild foxing in places, else clean and crisp, a very good set. First edition. In this work Pluquet delivers a detailed analysis of the “misdeeds” of luxury to the individual and to the state. He is clearly influenced by Cantillon and Petty, and he criticizes the ideas of Mandeville, Melon, Montesquieu, Hume, Condillac and others. As was apparently noticed by Anatole Braun in his review of Professor Murphy’s book on Cantillon, published in a now defunct periodical, The Antiquarian Book Market Review, Pluquet gives an almost contemporary information on the way the text of Cantillon was saved to posterity. Pluquet who in his book refers to Cantillon on many occasions has a footnote saying that public owes Cantillon’s book to the Marquis de Saint Georges, who was very close to Mirabeau and his brother, the Bailli (see the book of Loménie on the Mirabeau). This note seems to have escaped the attention of the historians and students of Cantillon and makes the book of Pluquet particularly interesting, not to mention his exhaustive treatment of the luxury question. Astonishingly Pluquet is unmentioned in the authoritative book of John Shovlin: The political economy of virtue, luxury,.2006. The volume records both public and private acts, organized chronologically for 1770 through 1783. The ABRIDGMENT., published as a separate work with separate titlepage, clearly supplements the ACTS. by listing the acts by subject and providing an index. There are numerous acts regarding slaves which provide much insight into that institution on the island, including legislation regarding runaways, "Free-Negroes," "Negro towns" and maroons, firearms, holidays, and even drumming. [Click Below for Full Description]

[STRASBOURG]
