A HISTORY OF THE LATE SIEGE OF GIBRALTAR. With a Description and Account of that Garrison, from the earliest periods. By John Drinkwater, Captain in the late Seventy-Second Regiment, or Royal Manchester Volunteers

London, printed by T. Spilsbury; and sold by J. Johnson; T. and J. Egerton.and J.Edwards, 1786.. SECOND EDITION 1786, corrected and with a copious Table of Contents, with an extra illustration "Design of A Medal", and a 4 page document about Drinkwater, see details below. 4to, approximately 270 x 220 mm, 10½ x 8½ inches, folding map frontispiece of the Coasts of Barbary, Spain and Portugal, large folding chart of the Bay of Gibraltar, 2 large folding battle plans, small engraved vignette to title page, 6 folding views including 1 of a battle, pages: xxiv, 356, with a list of Subscribers, bound in modern quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands to spine, gilt motifs in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. Folds to maps strengthened and repaired, and a few other edge repairs on reverse, no loss, 1 vertical fold with misfolds, 1 folding plate lightly browned, small closed tear to inner edge of battle plans, neatly repaired, faint browning to lower margin of title page, otherwise a clean tight sturdy copy. At the rear is tippped in a printed sheet, slightly smaller than the page size headed "Design of A Medal, proposed to be struck in order to Commemorate the Siege of Gibraltar" with 2 designs below (diam. 58 mm, 2¼"), obverse and reverse for the proposed medal, obverse dated 1782, reverse 1783 marking the termination of the blockade. Underneath is written in ink: "This Medal was executed by P (?) at the Expense of General William Picton - but the Die failed after 70 Impressions were struck". Laid in is 4 page folio document headed "Memoir of the Public Services of Col. Drinkwater, One of the Comptrollers of Army Accounts". Appearing to be closely handwritten in 1835, the the first 3 pages are actually reproduced by some method or other, the paper being watermarked 1822. The last 9 lines on page 3 and page 4 appear to have been added in manuscript in a smaller very similar hand in paler ink. The Memoir recounts the military and government career of Col. John Drinkwater (1762 ?- 1844) who kept a journal during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. He had joined the Royal Manchester volunteers at the age of fifteen and was almost immediately posted to Gibraltar, travelling there a second time in 1787 with the second battalion of the Royal Regiment of foot. He subsequently accompanied his regiment to Toulon (where he acted as military secretary during the city's English occupation) and then to Corsica (where he served as deputy-judge-advocate to the English forces stationed there). After Corsica's evacuation Drinkwater returned with Sir Gilbert Elliott in the Minerva, which flew the pendant of Nelson as commodore, whom he had befriended while in Corsica. Sir John Jervis's squadron off Cape St Vincent having been reached, Drinkwater witnessed the battle of St Vincent, and brought the news of it to England. Drinkwater was of the opinion that the services of Nelson, who was not mentioned in the published dispatches, had been underestimated, and he published anonymously A Narrative of the Battle of St Vincent, in which justice was done to Nelson.       INDIANS. PRIMER FOR THE USE OF THE MOHAWK CHILDREN, To acquire the Spelling and Reading of their own, as well as to get acquainted with the English Tongue. Waerighwaghsawe Iksaongoenwa Tsiwaondad - derighhonny Kaghyadoghsera [by Daniel Claus]. London: C. Buckton 1786. 24mo (5 1/2 x 4"), 98p., original tree calf with gilt rule, joints rubbed, very small insignifcant edge stain on first two blanks and frontis, else VG+ or better, housed in a custom cloth box. First London edition set from the 1781 Montreal edition. Apart from being the only obtainable edition it is also THE FIRST EDITION WITH ILLUSTRATIONS. Only a handful of copies (it is thought fewer than 10) of the Montreal edition survive. That edition comprised approximately 300 copies, 250 of which were burned and caused the printing of this London edition. Illustrated with a wonderful mezzotint frontis by James Peachy depicting Indian students at work in school and with 1 full page wood engraving. The title page and text are printed in both English and Mohawk. Wright (Prayer Books p.33-4) suggests that Paul Sahonwadi, a Mohawk clerk and teacher was the actual author or co-author of the primer. He and Claus had collaborated on the Mohawk Book of Prayer in 1780. This is a rare and fascinating early children's book. Sabin 65548, Field 1074, Church 1216.

Small quarto, woodcut initial and tailpieces; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt. A fine copy of the first edition of this comprehensive manual on the cultivation of olive trees.Dalla Bella had earlier published a work on the manufacture of olive oil - Memorias sobre o modo de aperfeiçoar a manufactura do azeite em Portugal (Coimbra, 1784) - and, finding existing agricultural manuals to be unsatisfactory, resolved to write a supplementary work on olive growing. The Memoria discusses the various kinds of olive trees, their propagation, where and how to plant and transplant olive trees, how to prune the trees and perform grafts, watering and fertilizing the trees, and the diseases to which they are subject; on pp. 161-79 is a monthly calendar summarizing what an olive grower needs to do and when. The many footnotes refer to contemporary works in French and Italian on olive growing, as well as to accounts by Roman and Greek authors. A second edition was published at Coimbra, 1818. This first edition is rare, recorded by NUC in just four American libraries; the title is not noted by Cagle in A Matter of Taste.Dalla Bella, a native of Padua, taught experimental physics at the Collegio dos Nobres in Lisbon, and later philosophy at Coimbra, finally retiring to Italy in 1823. Among his other published works is a treatise on lightning rods, Noticias historicas, e praticas acerca do modo de defender os edificios dos estragos dos raios (Lisbon, 1773).         Manuscript memorandum to Lord Sydney

5 October, Burton Pynsent, Somerset 1786 - Manuscript note in ink on paper, 102 x 182 mm; in good condition; evidently once mounted in an album. A short memorandum written by the Prime Minister from his private country house to Lord Sydney as Home Secretary. Pitt is returning the 'dispatches to Gibraltar and Algiers which he received by the Post this evening, and has marked some words in the letter? which if Lord Sydney approve of it, he thinks might as well be omitted?'. Pitt's legible hand is difficult to decipher only in his identification of the recipient of the draft letter to which he refers, which may read 'letter to Bey', the title by which the ruler of Algiers was still known at the time. This slight document has an appeal in making the connection between these two men just six weeks after Pitt's government had made the formal decision to send convicts to Botany Bay, to a place that would shortly be named for his Home Secretary.

Manuscript Letter - Addressed to a Madame Coéls [Von Coels, a family of Prussian nobility] - Written in French and Affixed with Heraldic Red Wax Seal

Baltimore, USA, 1786. Baltimore, 9 September 1786. Manuscript signed letter written by Countess Zuzana Benyowksy (1750-1815), who was well connected in America and in Europe owing to her husband, and who was then recently widowed by Hungarian Count Maurice Augustus Benyowsky, in which she announces her upcoming departure from America for Europe, where some of her mourning period would be spent in the London home of Portuguese philosopher Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan. Text is in French. 8vo. Double-leaf laid watermarked paper made by S. Lay, with integral address and heraldic red wax seal, measuring approximately 18 x 22 cm. Remnants of earlier repair at folds, otherwise in very good condition. Addressed to a Madame Coéls [Von Coels, a family of Prussian nobility], and dating only five months after her husband's death, Ms. Benyowsky informs her dear friend from Philadelphia of her upcoming departure for Europe, suggests that she would find comfort in her company, and provides a temporary address in London where she would stay for two months, her destination being the residence the Portuguese philosopher Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan, descendant the great 16th century explorer. [Although having loaned the Count a large sum of money for a money-making scheme directly relating to the Madagascar voyage, which could no longer be recovered, Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan, was deeply sympathetic to the Countess' losses. In 1783 Benyowsky had presented him with his Memoirs and Travels (in French). In 1790 Magellan had them published in England.] Countess Susana Benyowksy, née Hönschová (Hensky), the daughter of a butcher, had only recently learned of the death of her husband, Hungarian adventurer Count Maurice Augustus Benyowsky, who was killed in Madagascar on 23 May 1786. A close friend and frequent corresponder with Benjamin Franklin, it was he whom enquired of his whereabouts in early May and he whom subsequently brought the tragic news to her. The Countess was with child when Benyowsky left Baltimore for Madagascar in 1784, such was the reason she stayed behind. According to a letter sent to Benjamin Franklin on 8 March 1786, (held by the American Philosophical Society) the baby girl had perished of illness. Count Benyowsky never knew his daughter. Surely languishing in sorrow, and desirous of being near family, this letter marks her return to Benovský's castle in the Slovak town of Beckovská Vieska, with her other daughters, where she would spend her final years, and where she died in 1825. (Countess Benyowsky did not settle in America as some sources erroneously suggest.) End Excerpts. Hungarian Count Maurice Augustus Benyowsky (Moric Benyovzky, Mauritius de Benyowksi, 1746-1786) lived extraordinary adventures in his short years, developing a prosperous alliance with France but ending with an interesting connection to America which cost him his ambitions and his life, ultimately at the hands of the French. In Paris, in 1777 Benyowski had become a close friend of Benjamin Franklin, and also of Polish nobleman Kazimir (Casimir) Pulaski (1748-1779) whom is often called one the two "fathers of the American cavalry'. In 1779 the Benyowkys returned to America and settled in Baltimore. With Benjamin Franklin's assistance, in 1783 he founded an American-British company for business with Madagascar. Unknowingly prophesying his own fate, upon leaving Baltimore in the Intrepid in 1784, Benyowsky had evidently avowed that this would be his final voyage to Madagascar. It has been suggested, in reference to his contract with Messrs. Zollichoft'er and Meissonier who supplied the vessel, that the lucrative business transaction was to supply of slaves to America. Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan was but one of the investors. Count Maurice Augustus Benyowsky (Moric Benyovzky, Mauritius de Benyowksi, 1746-1786) was a military officer in the French, Polish, Austrian and American armies, an explorer, a writer, and a self declared King of eastern Madagascar. In his memoirs he described himself on several occasions as a "Hungarian and Polish nobleman". His lineage was indeed that of nobility, his father, Count Samuel Benyovszky, being heir of the house of Benyovszky, and his mother, Rozália Révay, a baroness from the noble Hungarian Révay family. He is considered a hero in three nations: Hungaria, Slovakia, and Poland. Benyowsky lived extraordinary adventures in his short years, developing a prosperous alliance with France but ending with an interesting connection to America which cost him his ambitions and his life. At only 16 years old he entered the army during in the Seven Years' War (1755-1763). After a short service he deserted his position to settle in Szepes. He was consequently accused of desertion in 1764 and called before a military tribunal, where he was also accused of apostasy for his rebellious attitudes toward the Catholic church. Legal battles over inheritance and property motivate him to flee to Poland in 1767, where the following year he became involved with the Confederation of Bar (Konfederacja Barska), a rebellion movement against Polish king Stanislaw August Poniatowski, who had been installed by Russia. Between 1769 and 1770 he served as a member of the Polish Confederation to fight together with Kazimierz Pulaski for the independence of Poland from Russian rule in Ukraine. He was captured and imprisoned in a camp at Kazan. In 1771, by commandeering a Russian corvette, he effected an escape in company with ninety-six other prisoners. Bound for Europe, they touched at Japan, the Lew-chew group, Formosa, and finally Macao, where he established relationships with a leading French Jesuit Bishop and the head of French Commerce in Canton, among others. In 1771, he was offered protection by the French and brought to France to meet with King Louis XV upon his arrival in 1772. The French government desirous of profiting from his talents, commissioned him to found a colony on Madagascar, which he did. However, Benyowsky's intentions for Madagascar being significantly variant to those of the French Royal Court, the desire of the French ministry being to reduce the island to their authority, not coinciding with the Count?'s plan to maintain the native chiefs' independence, caused great friction. After establishing the settlement of Louisburg, in 1776 Benyovszky was elected by a group of local tribal chiefs as their Ampanjakabe (ruler). He left the island with said title and governing powers, in hopes of entering into a commercial treaty with some European government, if not France, and securing their alliance. To this end, late in 1776 Benyovszky returned to France to make new proposals for the colonization of the island. While in Paris in 1777, he also befriended Benjamin Franklin, and gained pardon from his native country. In 1779 Benyovszky went to America, where he tried to obtain support for a proposal to use Madagascar as a base against the British in aid of the American War of Independence. In 1783, with the help of Benjamin Franklin and J. H. Magellan, Benyovszky entered into a contract with an American-British company for trade with Madagascar. Exasperated and feeling defied by Benyovszky's cooperation with the United States and his successful capture of the French settlement of Foulpointe in 1785, to prevent him from establishing a kingdom, the French Maritime Ministry launched an attack and killed him on 23 May 1786. Benyowsky wrote a book about his adventures, in a work which saw numerous translations, the English published in London 1790 as "Memoirs and Travels of Augustus Count de Benyowsky: Magnate of the Kingdoms of Hungary and Poland, one of the Chiefs of the Confederation of Poland, &c. &c. Consisting of his military operations in Poland, his exile into Kamchatka, his escape and voyage from that Peninsula through the northern Pacific Ocean, Touching at Japan and Formosa, to Canton in China, with an Account of the French Settlement He was Appointed to Form upon the Island of Madagascar. Written by himself. Translated from the Original Manuscript." . Very Good.

Les Bâtimens et les desseins de André Palladio recueillis et illustrés par Octave Bertotti Scamozzi... Seconde edition [with] Les Thermes des Romains

Vicenza: Rossi & Modena 1785-, 1786. Three volumes, folio, comprising: Les Bâtimens et les desseins, four parts (bound in the first two volumes), each with separate decorated title-pages, portrait frontispiece to the first volume and a total of 208 engraved plates, many folding; Les Thermes, being the third volume of the set, with portrait frontispiece and 25 plates; splendid contemporary uniform quarter calf binding, spines gilt with red and black titling labels; very occasional browning of some plates, one plate with a small repaired tear, otherwise excellent condition. Palladian revival architecture. An important scholarly edition of buildings and projected designs by Andrea Palladio (1508-1580). Edited by Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi (1719-1790), this edition played an important role in the Palladian revival that influenced architects, builders and designers across the world - including Australia and the Americas.Bertotti Scamozzi was the leading Palladian Revival architect working in Italy; he built many prominent houses in and near Vicenza. However 'he is more important as the editor of Palladio's work' (Penguin Dictionary of Architecture). Scamozzi carefully measured many of Palladio's important houses and buildings, many of which were inaccessible to the public. As an accurate record of Palladio's built works, Scamozzi's accomplishment is unparalleled: 'The quality of Scamozzi's work is remarkable, and it is not surprising to find that many of his plates have been used by leading authors on the work of Palladio, to illustrate their monographs' writes architectural historian Quentin Hughes, in his introduction to the 1968 London facsimile.Inspired by classical design, Palladio is among the first architects to design unfortified rural houses. In his immortal Quattro Libri dell' Architettura of 1570, Palladio presents idealised houses and projects which became universal patterns for future generations. By recording Palladio's existing buildings as actually constructed, Scamozzi created an objective record that further enriched the idealised understanding transmitted by Palladio's published works. It is important to reflect upon the inaccessibility of the vast majority of the buildings here illustrated, most were private aristocratic estates and accordingly remained closed to public inspection. For the first time Scamozzi published accurate plans and this information was widely disseminated. The proliferation of Palladian building in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was in no small part due to these books acting as a catalyst for not just architects, but builders and designers also. The impact was global - the most famous example being Monticello in Virginia built by Thomas Jefferson. However, there are numerous fine colonial Australian examples, including Camden Park, Government House in Parramatta and Panshanger at Longford in Tasmania.Sumptuous and extravagant, Les Bâtimens et les desseins de André Palladio was published in the tradition of Campbell's Vitrivius Britannicus and similar grand folios of the eighteenth century. The quality and number of plates is impressive, and given that many of these buildings have been destroyed or subsequently altered beyond recognition they are of significant historical value. The Basilica in Vicenza is one such example; tragically bombed during the Second World War, it was faithfully restored using Scamozzi's plans and the municipal archives. The third volume in this uniformly bound set is Les Thermes which publishes Palladio's measured plans of Roman baths. Palladio never published these drawings and they remained at his Villa Maser until purchased by Richard Boyle, the third Earl of Burlington. In 1732 Burlington published them in a very small edition for his immediate circle. Scamozzi recognised their importance within the Palladian canon and republished them without alteration. Les Thermes was sold both as a separate volume and as part of the set, as seen in this example. This is a remarkably fine set in beautiful contemporary bindings.
