Les Bâtimens et les desseins de André Palladio recueillis et illustrés par Octave Bertotti Scamozzi... Seconde edition [with] Les Thermes des Romains

Vicenza: Rossi & Modena 1785-, 1786. Three volumes, folio, comprising: Les Bâtimens et les desseins, four parts (bound in the first two volumes), each with separate decorated title-pages, portrait frontispiece to the first volume and a total of 208 engraved plates, many folding; Les Thermes, being the third volume of the set, with portrait frontispiece and 25 plates; splendid contemporary uniform quarter calf binding, spines gilt with red and black titling labels; very occasional browning of some plates, one plate with a small repaired tear, otherwise excellent condition. Palladian revival architecture. An important scholarly edition of buildings and projected designs by Andrea Palladio (1508-1580). Edited by Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi (1719-1790), this edition played an important role in the Palladian revival that influenced architects, builders and designers across the world - including Australia and the Americas.Bertotti Scamozzi was the leading Palladian Revival architect working in Italy; he built many prominent houses in and near Vicenza. However 'he is more important as the editor of Palladio's work' (Penguin Dictionary of Architecture). Scamozzi carefully measured many of Palladio's important houses and buildings, many of which were inaccessible to the public. As an accurate record of Palladio's built works, Scamozzi's accomplishment is unparalleled: 'The quality of Scamozzi's work is remarkable, and it is not surprising to find that many of his plates have been used by leading authors on the work of Palladio, to illustrate their monographs' writes architectural historian Quentin Hughes, in his introduction to the 1968 London facsimile.Inspired by classical design, Palladio is among the first architects to design unfortified rural houses. In his immortal Quattro Libri dell' Architettura of 1570, Palladio presents idealised houses and projects which became universal patterns for future generations. By recording Palladio's existing buildings as actually constructed, Scamozzi created an objective record that further enriched the idealised understanding transmitted by Palladio's published works. It is important to reflect upon the inaccessibility of the vast majority of the buildings here illustrated, most were private aristocratic estates and accordingly remained closed to public inspection. For the first time Scamozzi published accurate plans and this information was widely disseminated. The proliferation of Palladian building in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was in no small part due to these books acting as a catalyst for not just architects, but builders and designers also. The impact was global - the most famous example being Monticello in Virginia built by Thomas Jefferson. However, there are numerous fine colonial Australian examples, including Camden Park, Government House in Parramatta and Panshanger at Longford in Tasmania.Sumptuous and extravagant, Les Bâtimens et les desseins de André Palladio was published in the tradition of Campbell's Vitrivius Britannicus and similar grand folios of the eighteenth century. The quality and number of plates is impressive, and given that many of these buildings have been destroyed or subsequently altered beyond recognition they are of significant historical value. The Basilica in Vicenza is one such example; tragically bombed during the Second World War, it was faithfully restored using Scamozzi's plans and the municipal archives. The third volume in this uniformly bound set is Les Thermes which publishes Palladio's measured plans of Roman baths. Palladio never published these drawings and they remained at his Villa Maser until purchased by Richard Boyle, the third Earl of Burlington. In 1732 Burlington published them in a very small edition for his immediate circle. Scamozzi recognised their importance within the Palladian canon and republished them without alteration. Les Thermes was sold both as a separate volume and as part of the set, as seen in this example. This is a remarkably fine set in beautiful contemporary bindings.

Letters of William Russell, on the doctrine of constructive contempt. With a true copy of the original affidavit, upon which the sheriff of the county of Dublin was attached, and an accurate report of the judgment of the King's Bench in that case

Dublin: [s.n.] 8vo (20.4 cm, 8"). [iii]?-xl, 155, [1] pp. (lacking half-title).. 1786 Sole edition of this strongly worded epistolary examination of constructive contempt (contempt of court which occurs outside of the court's actual presence) and its role in Sheriff Henry Steevens Reily's case — the disposition of which the author considered an attempt to subvert the rights of free Irish citizens. The dedication to Prime Minister William Pitt makes particular note of the "independent situation of Irish courts" (p. vii). While this work is certainly held in the expectable Irish libraries, it is => little held in British or American libraries. In fact, searches of NUC, ESTC, and WorldCat locate only two copies in the U.S., both in the northeast. Period-style half calf and marbled paper?-covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped title. Half-title lacking; title-page with early inked inscriptions in upper portion (one inked over), lower corners torn away, and edges chipped as next few leaves' are; first dedication page with early 20th-century inscription in inner margin. Pages darkened, especially at edges, and a good many bumped; last four leaves tattered with old repairs to lower corners taking a few letters but not sense, and once-separated final leaf with repairs also to upper and inner margins. A copy with some rough aspects, but one now sound and => a book that's scarce.

The Pilgrim's Progress. A New [Second] Edition, divided into Chapters. [With] large explanatory and practical Notes. With the Life of the Author: by G. Burder. HANDSOME COPY OF A RARE COVENTRY ISSUE

2 parts in one vol., 12mo., on laid paper, with an engraved frontispiece and 8 engraved plates, some mild age - staining (rather heavier on frontispiece and some plates), contemporary name on title; strongly and attractively bound in early nineteenth - century half roan, marbled boards tooled in gilt, back with four flat bands elaborately tooled in gilt, second compartment lettered in gilt, red sprinkled edges, a very good, firm copy in well - preserved period binding. With three pages of hymns and single - page publisher's advertisement at rear. L6 has short tear (not affecting text) and neat repair at upper margin. The work is divided into two parts as often. Burder was a Congregationalist minister [sometime active in Coventry] who began life as an engraver but subsequently played an important role in the founding of the RTS. His edition of 'The Pilgrim's Progress' (1786) is the first to be divided into chapters and was frequently reprinted. This is apparently the second Coventry printing; we have a note of an earlier (1790) version issued by Luckman & Suffield. In the earlier issue the pagination is similar but the plates include a frontispiece to each part; here the number of plates remains the same, but all are numbered for inclusion in the first part. Rare. ESTC lists only the 1786 edition.

A New, Authentic, and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World,. Undertaken and Performed by Royal Authority. Containing a New, Authentic, Entertaining, Instructive... Account of Captain Cook's First, Second, Third and Last Voyages... and now publishing under the immediate direction of George William Anderson, Esq

London: Printed for Alex. Hogg, at the Original Kings' Arms, 1784-, 1786. Folio, with 80 engraved maps, plans and views; contemporary full calf boards (repaired at one corner and generally scuffed), rebacked in period style; internally very good. For the curious public at large. A popular and important one volume edition of Cook's Voyages, also included are condensed accounts of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Anson and Drake.Anderson states that he was "assisted, very materially, by a Principal Officer who sailed in the Resolution... and by other Gentlemen of the Royal Navy", and the work contains some particulars not found in the official account.Anderson modestly observes that "some other Editions of these Works (unnecessarily extended to many large volumes, by loose printing, blank paper, and other artifices, practised by many mercinary persons) would cost the purchaser the enormous sum of upwards of Twenty Guineas; so that the thousands of persons who would wish to peruse the valuable discoveries so partially communicated to the world, and view the astonishing fine copper plates, have hitherto been excluded from gratifying their eager curiosity; This Edition, being published in only Eighty Six-penny Numbers (making, when completed, One Large Handsome Volume in Folio) enables every person, whatever may be his circumstances, to become familiarly acquainted with those extraordinary and important voyages and discoveries... and the obvious intention of the King and Government, that the Improvements and Discoveries... might be communicated to the whole world, will of course be more fully answered".Forbes notes that the book was originally issued in weekly parts and later sold as an entire publication.

An Explanation of the Case relating to the Capture of St. Eustatius.

London: For J. Stockdale, 1786. - Second edition, first published in 1783. This slim volume recounts the case against Admiral Sir George Rodney and General John Vaughan, who were accused of privateering after the capture of the island of Sint Eustatius during the Revolutionary War. In the late 18th century, St. Eustatius, a Dutch-controlled island in the West Indies, served as a crucial entrepot for supplying the Continental Army with gunpowder and other supplies. A British blockade had made it difficult to transport supplies directly across the Atlantic Ocean to the American colonies, so various Caribbean islands, including Martinique, discreetly traded supplies to the revolutionaries. In 1776, St. Eustatius became the first foreign port to salute the flag of the United States, firing eleven guns in response to the thirteen fired by American brig 'Andrew Doria.' The ship had been sent to purchase supplies as well as to present the Dutch governor of the island a copy of the Declaration of Independence. This friendly relationship with the thirteen colonies made St. Eustatius a target for the British navy, who blamed the trade between them for Britain's failure to quickly win the war. On January 30, 1781, Admiral Sir George Rodney set out with 30,000 British troops to capture the island of St. Eustatius and put an end to trade with the colonies. Rather than launching an immediate assault, Rodney sent word to Governor Johannes de Graaff asking for a peaceful surrender. De Graaff agreed and by the next day the nearby islands of St. Maarten and Saba had also surrendered to the British troops. Rodney and General John Vaughan had signed an agreement whereby all confiscated goods would go to the British Crown, and they in turn expected to receive a significant percentage upon their arrival in England. Rather than delegating the task of appraising the plunder, Rodney and Vaughan did it themselves, holding a public auction of the seized goods, including naval and military stores, open to buyers of any nationality. This included the French and the Americans, who were able to purchase goods from the British for about half the price they would have paid had they bought them from the Dutch. When the British caught wind of this, Rodney and Vaughan were charged with privateering. Additionally, St. Eustatius at the time was a vibrant, multicultural community that included African slaves, British citizens, American loyalists, and a significant Jewish community. "The Jews suffered the harshest treatment even though some of them were British. The Jewish community at St. Eustatius was made up of some 350 Sephardic and Ashkenazim members. With the support of their brethren in Curacao and Amsterdam, they had built a synagogue, which they called Honen Dalim, meaning 'the one who is merciful to the poor,' of which there are still remains in St. Eustatius "The conquest of St. Eustatius was 'a day of desolation to the community at large & Jews in particular.' The Jews shared in the common 'Loss of their Merchandise, their Bills, their Houses, Clothes, [and] Provisions' but they alone suffered the separation of families and the banishment of their men who were not even told the destination of their exile. They 'petitioned, intreated, implored, [and] remonstrated against so hard a sentence, but in vain.' They were not allowed to keep their personal possessions, in contrast to the Americans, Dutch, and French. Those found withholding petty cash were set apart for punishment. The 101 adult male Jews were assembled under guard and had the linings of their pockets ripped open and their 'cloaths torn in pieces to search for concealed money' before thirty of them were 'hurried off the island, destitute of everything, to solicit the cold charity of Antigua, and St. Kitts.' The rest were locked in a weighing house for three days; they were released just in time to witness the auction of their belongings" (O'Shaughnessy, "An Empire Divided: The American Revolution and the British Caribbean," pp. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies, As Revised and Proposed to the Use of the Protestant Episcopal Church ?

Extremities worn. Small piece of titlepage torn away at fore edge, affecting border and two letters of text. Light tanning and foxing. A good copy. In a half morocco box. The Suppressed Original Episcopal Book of Common Prayer The American Protestant Episcopal Church was founded after the American Revolution as an adaptation of the Church of England in the new United States. The church was founded at a convention in Philadelphia in 1785, at which it was agreed to create a separate prayer book. The present title is the result, and it caused great controversy upon its publication. Among the ill-considered revisions were "changes and omissions of such drastic nature as among other things the deletion of the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds. The Proposed Book proved unwelcome to clergy and laity, even its suggestion of a prayer for the Fourth of July being taken exception to. Its use was brief and not general" (Page). "This edition, contains the alterations which were intended to adapt the Book of Common Prayer, of the Church of England, to the changed political conditions of this country; and is the result of a convention held in Philadelphia, in 1785, presided over by the Reverend William White. The proposed Prayer Book met with much criticism and opposition in the church, owing to its radical changes, and was never adopted." - Evans.

. Aquarell, über Bleistift, auf Velin. 30:26 cm.

Le Anitchità Romane . divisa in quattro tomi

[ bound with :] Francisco PIRANESI. Monumenti degli Scipioni. Rome, 1785. Letterpress title, pp.1-24, 1-3 text. 6 etched plates, 1 etched tailpiece, all by Francesco Piranesi and bound at the end of vol.II of the first work. 2 works in 4 volumes, folio (21 x 16 inches). Expertly bound to style in half 18th-century diced russia over contemporary yellow/ivory glazed paper-covered boards, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, black morocco in the fourth, the other compartments with an elaborate decorative repeat design. Provenance : P. Moreno (early letterpress book labels). Variant issue of the second edition of Piranesi's magnum opus with additional plates not found in earlier issues: the work by Piranesi's son, bound in at the end of volume II, shows the tomb of Scipio, which had recently been excavated. In an attempt to reflect the additional material the publisher has had various manuscript changes made to the letterpress title and to the index leaf in the second volume: the original printed date on the title has been carefully altered so that it reads 1786 instead of 1784, the words "Seconda Edizione" have been added, and the presence of Francesco's contribution is noted on the index leaf which reads "Monumenti degli Scipioni, VI Tavole adjunte 1785". "More than any other antiquarian work, the plates of the Antichità played a dominant role in conveying information [about the ancient city], and Piranesi was to develop a whole new range of specialized illustrations in order to reveal aspects of antiquity which had hitherto been largely neglected. His aim, as with all his archaeological publications, was two-fold: to record the vanishing past for scholars and to inspire contemporary designers to emulate the achievements of the past. In the Antichità Piranesi consciously sets out to apply a completely new system of archaeological inquiry to the study of the remains of antiquity. The first volume explains the urban structure of ancient Rome in terms of its walls, defenses and aqueducts as well as its civic and religious monuments. The next two volumes . are devoted to the extensive remains of tombs and funerary monuments around Rome. The final volume expounds the heroic feats of Roman engineering represented by the bridges and monumental structures like the Curia Hostilia (the substructure of the Temple of Claudio), Hadrian's Mausoleum (the Castel Sant' Angelo), and the Theater of Marcellus. [In this work there are also signs of] Piranesi's attempts to counteract the increasing claims for the superiority of Greek art and architecture being made by Winckelmann and Laugier" (Wilton-Ely I, pp.327-328). The son of a stonemason, Piranesi trained in the architectural studio of his maternal uncle, Matteo Lucchesi, and possibly with the artist and stage designer Ferdinando Bibiena at Venice before travelling to Rome as part of the Venetian delegation to honour the newly elected Pope Benedict XIV. Piranesi's early enthusiasm for antiquity was further excited at Rome, and the discoveries at Herculaneaum, which Piranesi visited, heightened his own and others' fascination with ancient ruins. After eight years of careful study and excavation Piranesi published this four-volume work in Rome in 1756. Its popularity was such that it swiftly established his reputation in Europe as the leading expert on Roman archaeology. F [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Signed autograph letter from the well-known Dutch anatomist Petrus Camper (1722-1789), professor of medicine and anatomy at the University of Groningen, to the bookseller, publisher and newspaper editor Reinier Arrenberg (1733-1812), to let him know that circumstances had prevented him from completing his work for the first volume (1774) of the Verhandelingen van het Bataafsch Genootschap der Proefondervindelyke Wysbegeerte te Rotterdam in the vacation and that he would not be able to complete his contributions in the coming three months as intended. The portrait was drawn from life by André Pujos (1738-1788) and executed in mezzotint by Claude Dominique Vinsac (ca. 1749-ca. 1800). It has no imprint or artist's name, but the Mercure Français described it and filled in many of the details: "très bien dessiné d'après nature par M. Pujos, & très-bien gravé par M. Vinsac, se trouve à Paris, chez M. Pujos, quai Pelletier, près la Grève." The letter has a chip where the recipient opened it (the piece torn off is still attached to the seal) and a hole through the foot of both leaves where it was probably tied with a ribbon. The seal itself survives virtually complete, but has been squashed, so that one cannot see details of the arms. The portrait has been trimmed down to the border and mounted on a backing sheet with a manuscript heading. Both are otherwise in very good condition. A letter from a well-known Dutch scientist, noting the difficulties that were to lead him to relinquish his professorship.

A Catalogue of the Portland Museum, lately the property of the Duchess Dowager of Portland, deceased: which will be sold by auction

London: Skinner and Co., 1786. Quarto; engraved frontispiece not present, contemporary half sheep, head and tail of spine worn, extremities worn, but a fairly good copy in original condition. An unsophisticated copy of this rare auction catalogue, of particular interest to Australia and the Pacific for its many hundreds of natural history lots, including the enormous and important collection of shells, catalogued for the auctioneer by Banks's protégé Solander. Many of the specimens had been brought back on the Cook voyages from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. This is the auction catalogue for the dispersal of the collection of natural history specimens gathered by Margaret Cavendish Bentwick, second Duchess of Portland, which was "considered the finest in England and rivalled the best in Europe" (Dance Shell Collecting, An Illustrated History). The Duchess was a patron of Captain Cook, friend of Rousseau and Reynolds, and a colleague of Daniel Solander. Through years of intrepid collecting her magnificent home, Bulstrode House in Buckinghamshire, became her museum.Bulstrode or 'The Hive' as it was known is court circles, was a place of great activity, a place not only for the display of Margaret's collection but where she and her team of botanists, entomologists and ornithologists worked. Scores of people would visit, from scholars, philosophers and scientists to Royalty. The Portland Museum was legendary; a place of delights where the ancient and the living were arranged side by side and where people came to be amazed at nature captured in its full diversity. The catalogue was drawn up her chaplain and (long-time) librarian the Reverend John Lightfoot, with specialist assistance from others including Solander who described the cabinet of shells.
