Louis-Isidore Duperrey (1786-1865)View from Voyage autour du Monde... Historie du VoyageParis: 1822-25Hand-colored engraving12 ¾" x 9 ½"; 22" x 18 ½" framedThe only other Europeans besides the English to play a significant part in mapping the Pacific including New Zealand's coastline and were the French. From 1800 to 1840, there were ten major French voyages to Australia and the Pacific.  The main purpose of these was scientific, however there was also an unspoken goal of discovering where France might carve out an empire of her own in the South Pacific. In addition to the vast collections of specimens and scientific data that were brought back, these voyages were distinguished by the publication of the most sumptuous collections of engravings noting not only the native plants and animals, but also the geography of the land and nature of its inhabitants.  Scientists, artists and engravers-attached to the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris were paid by the French Government and worked over many years to produce these extraordinary documentations of each voyage.Of great note is the expedition lead by Lois-Isidore Duperrey on the vessel named Coquille which left Toulon August 11, 1822 and arrived in Marseilles on March 24, 1825.  Duperrey joined the navy in 1802, and served as marine hydrologist to Louis Claude de Saulces de Freycinet aboard the Uranie (1817-1820), a previous expedition that had earned Duperrey praise and granted him the opportunity to command his own ship on what would become one of the greatest French expeditions to the Pacific. Duperrey proceeded to the Pacific by way of Brazil and Cape Horn.  Stops were made along the coats of Chile and Peru, and in the Society, Gilbert , Marshall and Caroline islands. Other islands visited included the Tuamoto, Archipelago, Tahiti, Tonga and Rotuma.  The expedition also made important exploratory visits to Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand, where the Maoris were visited.  The entire voyage took almost three years.By far the greatest contributions of the expedition were scientific, cartographic, and ethnographic.  1200 Insects, 288 fishes, 264 birds, 63 reptiles and quantities of plants were collected and beautifully described and reproduced in the exquisitly colored plates of the several atlases of Voyage autour du Monde.  Recordings were made on Polynesian languages, costumes, weapons and religious artifcats.  Duperrey is given credit for discovering the Caroline and Gilbert islands, and for correcting errors in earlier charts of the Society Islands.  Duperrey's also continued to explore the French interest in Tahiti and the Society Islands, which culminated in their annexation by France.  His expedition also proved to be a catalyst for French missionary endeavors in the South Pacific to contest with Protestant Englishmen.  His explorations of Australia and New Zealand were less significant politically, since the British opposed any French settlement there.  Nonetheless, this largely scientific endeavor opened the door to a much more aggressive French policy in the South Pacific.

Observations sur la Virginie, Par M. J***. Traduites de l'Anglois

French translation by the Abbé André Morellet. Paris: chez Barrois l'ainé, 1786. Octavo. (7 5/8 x 4 3/4 inches). Half-title, 4pp.errata. 1 folding letterpress table, 1 folding engraved 'Map of the country between Albermarle Sound and, Lake Erie, comprehending the whole of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania, with parts of several other of the United States' by Samuel Neale, uncoloured and printed on two joined sheets (as issued). Contemporary French marbled calf, the covers bordered with single blind fillets, the flat spine divided into eight unequal compartments by gilt double fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others variously tooled with small tools and floral tools, marbled endpapers (minor wear to the head and foot of the spine), contained in a recent leather-backed cloth box, 'spine' tooled and lettered in gilt. A fine unsophisticated copy of the first published edition of this enduring American classic, with Jefferson's highly important map in its first state. This is the rare Paris edition of the French translation of Jefferson's 'Notes on the State of Virginia'. The first edition of Notes... was printed privately for Jefferson in 1785 in an edition of 200 copies, which he distributed to personal friends. Initially, Jefferson had resisted the idea of publishing the work so that it could reach a larger audience. However, the widespread interest the book aroused soon led to rumors that a pirated edition would appear, and to forestall this, regular published editions came out with his blessing in French (the present work, Observations... translated by the Abbe Morallet and published in Paris in 1786) and in English (London, 1787) soon followed by an American edition (Philadelphia, 1788.) The work ultimately went through several dozen editions before his death, and remains in print today. This is the only book-length work published during Jefferson's lifetime and is a cornerstone of any collection of printed Americana. The first private edition is virtually unobtainable, making this edition not only the first published edition, but also the first which is even remotely obtainable. The map, here in its first state, is an important document in its own right and was engraved by Samuel J. Neale in London from a drawing produced (at the urging of Morallet) by Jefferson himself specifically for this edition. "The Abbe engaged me to make a map ... It is on a single sheet 23 inches square, and very closely written ... tho' it is on the scale of only an inch to twenty miles ... I answer for the exactness of the reduction. I have supplied some new places. Tho' the first object which induced me to undertake it was to make a map for my book, I soon extended my view to the making as good a map of those countries as my materials would admit" (Jefferson, letter to Edward Bancroft). Coolie Verner goes into the details of the production of the map: Neele completed the initial engraving on 21 December 1786 and immediately despatched the printing plate with proofs to Paris. Unfortunately, a problem with the original drawing meant that there were numerous errors in the printing plate. Jefferson corrected a proof which was given, together with the printing plate to the Parisian engraver Guillaume Delahaye. The engraver corrected the errors and was able to deliver 250 proofs to Jefferson on 24 March 1787. This first impression was printed on thick paper and was hand-coloured in outline, the paper was too thick to allow for the map to be folded and copies were eventually offered for sale as individual maps - this much is known from correspondence and contemporary advertisements, but no examples of this impression are currently known to exist. After Delahaye completed his work he delivered the printing plate to the publisher Barrois. Jefferson asked Barrois to arrange for the printing of 200 copies of the map on thinner paper so that it could be inserted in copies of the private edition of his Notes... 200 copies of this second impression were printed in April 1787, on two joined sheets and hand-coloured in outline. The present third impression of the first state was printed for Barrois for inclusion in the Observations... : it was limited to about 1150 copies, on to joined sheets like the second impression but uncoloured. The printing plate subsequently returned to London where John Stockdale added his imprint to the foot of the plate and printed the second issue in two impressions: the first of 1,025 examples in July 1787 (on a single sheet of light weight paper, hand-coloured in outline) and the second in March 1788 in an impression of about 300 uncoloured copies. Jefferson originally wrote the Notes... in response to a series of queries sent to him by the French diplomat Francois Barbe-Marbois, composing them after the defeat of the British at Yorktown in 1781. On the urging of their mutual friend, the distinguished French soldier and scientist, the Marquis de Chastellux, he later expanded his responses into a series of twenty-three essays on every aspect of his native state; geography, landforms, products, agriculture, climate, population, armed forces, Indians, towns, laws, religion, manners, and history. The Notes... are vastly informative, but they were also a mirror of Jefferson's tastes and personality. J. M. Edelstein noted, "Jefferson wrote about things which interested him deeply and about which he knew a great deal; the Notes, therefore, throws a fascinating light on his tastes, curiosities, and political and social opinions." Clark I:262; Degrees of Latitude 72, state 1; Howes J78; Sabin 35895; Sowerby IV, pp.301-30; Stephenson & McKee Virginia in Maps p.92; Vail 746; Coolie Verner 'Mr. Jefferson's Map' in Imago Mundi XIV (1959) pp.96-108.

[Estampes pour servir l'histoire des plantes]

Paris: [circa 1786). 2 volumes, broadsheet. (21 7/16 x 15 7/16 inches). Engraved throughout, without title and text (as issued). Frontispiece of the first meeting of the "Académie royale des sciences" by and after Sebastien le Clerc, 319 engraved plates by Nicolas Robert, Abraham Bosse and Louis de Chatillon after Nicolas Robert and de Chatillon, with occasional engraved additions and alterations by Jean Marchant, all numbered in pencil, 16 without captions. Contemporary marbled calf gilt, covers with double-fillet borders and centrally-placed royal arms of Louis XVI of France, expertly rebacked to style, spines in eight compartments with raised bands, bands highlighted with roll-tool, red morocco lettering- piece in the second compartment, blue morocco lettering-piece in the third, the other compartments with decorative repeat pattern of large central flower spray tool surrounded by small tools and foliage corner- pieces rebacked, expert repairs to corners. "The finest collection of flower engravings made during the seventeenth century" (Blunt). This very rare complete collection of engravings is by or after Nicolas Robert, the greatest botanical artist of the seventeenth century. Together, the plates form a valuable and unique record of plants in cultivation in the second half of that century."The Recueil des plantes was judged by the master flower painter Gerard van Spaendonck to be the most beautiful botanical work ever published" (Oak Spring Flora). Hunt writes that the plates to this work "rank among the best botanical engravings ever produced." The work was never formally published or offered for public sale. The present copy was given as a Royal gift in about 1786 and is bound in a binding bearing the French Royal arms. Notably, it includes the important frontispiece (not always present) by and after Sebastien Le Clerc, depicting Louis XIV visiting a meeting of the Académie Royale des Sciences. Subsequent to its gift in the 18th century, this copy entered the great natural history library of the Earls of Derby at Knowsley Hall. "Nicolas Robert (1614-85) must ever be remembered for three important contributions to botanical art: - for the famous Guirlande de Julie, for his flower paintings on vellum for Gaston, and Louis XIV; and for [the present work] - the finest collection of flower engravings made during the seventeenth century. Robert's name first occurs as an illustrator of a small book of etchings of flowers entitled Fiori Diversi (Rome: 1640). His father was an inn-keeper at Langres, and the circumstances in which the young man made the journey to Italy remain unknown; but he must already have made some reputation for himself, for the following year he was chosen to illustrate a book of unusual interest and importance, the Guirlande de Julie ... Before [the baron de] Sainte-Maure set out for the wars, he had given his fiancée [the witty, beautiful and virtuous Julie d'Angennes, daughter of Madame de Rambouillet], as a birthday gift, an album of flowers - the chef d'oeuvre de la galanterie known as the "Guirlande de Julie." In the making of it, Nicolas Robert had collaborated with Jarry, the greatest calligrapher of the day ... Overnight Robert found himself famous; shortly afterwards, when Gaston d'Orléans was seeking a painter to make a permanent record of his collection, his eye naturally fell upon the young painter of the celebrated Guirlande. To form a true impression of the diversity and brilliance of Robert's talent as a painter, it is necessary to study his work at the Muséum of the Jardin des Plantes ... Outline is reduced to a bare minimum, and, as in medieval illumination, the neutral tone of the shadows is often disregarded. Form and texture are suggested by an infinity of finely hatched strokes... At the time of Gaston's death in 1660, the collection filled five large folio volumes. The majority of the drawings are flowers, though there are also many birds and other objects of natural history. Appointed in 1664 to the post of 'peintre ordinaire de Sa Majesté pour la miniature,' Robert now continued in Paris and at Versailles the work he had begun at Blois ... It is believed to have been the great Scottish botanist Robert Morison (1620- 1683), a Royalist in exile from 1650 to 1660, Superintendent of Gastons' gardens at Blois, who first persuaded Nicolas Robert to interest himself in scientific botanical illustration. In the years spent at Blois, the latter had learned to become more than a mere purveyor of floral beauty; it was fitting, therefore, when the newly founded Académie Royale des Sciences decided to publish a History of Plants, that he should be chosen as its chief illustrator" (Wilfred Blunt & William T. Stearn, The Art of Botanical Illustration, 1994, pp.118-121). "The original idea for this encyclopaedic undertaking was conceived by Perrault and the proposal was enthusiastically received by Colbert, minister to Louis XIV, although it appears to have actually begun to take shape when the botanist Denis Dodart (1634-1707) joined the Académie in 1673. His work, Mémoires pour servir à l'Histore des Plantes, which was intended to form the introductory volume to this series, appeared in 1675 and contained thirty- nine plates by Robert. In it Dodart lamented the fact that none of the engravings could be in colour, but at least, he assured the reader, all the illustrations in the new series would be drawn directly from life, the artist making every effort to present the plants in their actual dimensions ... Putting to one side his regular activity of flower painting on vellum in order to concentrate on this project, Robert managed to produce an enormous number of engravings [but at the time of his death the work was incomplete] ... Most of the engravings show the plants in flower, complete with their roots, and many are accompanied by enlarged drawings of certain details. This work was clearly the result of a close collaboration between the scientist and artist, both seeking to portray the plant as accurately as possible. The plates engraved by Robert are instantly distinguishable by the lightness of his touch and by the sensitive modulation of the various tones of grey and black in the leaves and flowers" (Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora, 1997, pp. 168- 170). Part of the original intention had been that the engravings should accompany text based on the latest chemical, medical and botanical analysis of the species depicted: this text was never published. The earliest issues of these engravings were printed in circa 1685, at about the time of Robert's death to provide an example of a "work in progress" to the Académie Royale des Sciences and include about 272 plates. In 1701, the complete work was printed containing 319 plates. In 1719, Jean Marchant added details of plant structures to the plates, based upon Tournefort and Vaillant, with occasional changes of plant names. Throughout the 18th century, very occasional collections of the plates were printed and given as gifts, with the numbers of plates in these collections varying greatly. In circa 1786, the "royal gift issue" was published [as the present copy], with the addition of the important frontispiece by Sebastien le Clerc and the full complement of 319 plates. In 1788, a second issue of this edition was published. All issues are of the utmost rarity.

10 dele i 21 bind (komplet).

A small nich to leather at middle of front hinge. A small tear to rear hinge at upper compartment. "Mémoires fe Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans", Tome XI. (4),198,682 pp. Wide-margined, fine and clean.. This collective work is the French Academy's monumental treatise on the chemistry and the production of Salpetre, a topic of great importence for the war-industry in making gunpowder. The volume contains papers by Macquer, Darcy, Lavoisier, Sage, Baumé, de la Rochefoucault, Clouer and an anonymous report on experiments made in England (CAVENDISH'S) on the composition of nitric acid....papers by Cornette, Thouvenel and Thouvenel, Le Lorgna, Gavinet and Chevrand, de Beunie, Romme, Clouet and Lavoisier, de Rochefoucault etc.(Partington III, p. 467 n)."The Regie des Poudres et Salpetres had the monopoly of refining salpetre from 1775 until it was suppressed during the Revolution. Until his retirement in 1791 the leading light in it was Lavoisier, who seems to have written its publications. - In 1775 the Academy offered a prize of 4000 livres for a process for procuring an abundant supply of salpetre, the announcement being written by Lavoisier. Altogether 66 papers were received and the prize was finally awarded in 1782 to the brothers Thouvenel, who gave a full account of nitre plantations. The material was published in 1786 in one volume by the Academy.
