A dictionary English and Spanish, and Spanish and English: containing the signification of words, and their different uses; together with the terms of arts, sciences, trades; and the Spanish words accented and spelled according to the regulation of the Royal Spanish Academy of Madrid. New edition, revised and improved after the edition of Joseph Baretti.

Piestre and Delamolliere, London [i.e. Lyons] 1786 - 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [6], 624; [4], 491; slight cracking of the joints, wear at spine ends and corners, but all in all a good, handsome set in contemporary mottled (French or Spanish) calf, gilt spines, red morocco labels. Baretti's edition was first published in 1778 although he called it "second edition" as he considered the dictionary of Giral Delpino, published in 1763, the first edition, since he had drawn so heavily upon it. Even so, "Baretti deleted twice as many vocabulary entries as he added to Giral Delpino's dictionary and did extensive editing." He also drew heavily on the dictionary of his friend, Dr. Samuel Johnson, and he introduced "thousands of vocabulary entries" from Johnson into this work. (See: Steiner, Two Centuries of Spanish and English Bilingual Lexicography, chapter 10). Vancil, p. 18. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothèque de feu Mr. de Sarolea, Seigneur du Ban de Cheratte, Barxhon, S. Remi, Fexhe, & Streel, Chanoine-Tréfoncier de la très-Illustre Eglise Cathédrale de Liège

Dont la Vente se fera publiquement à Liège...& commencera le 6 Février 1786. 3 p.l., 371 pp. 8vo, cont. vellum-backed patterned paper over boards (spine somewhat worn, title quite spotted), entirely uncut. Liège: S. Dauvrain, 1785. An important first in catalogues: this is the first auction catalogue to provide collations; it is very rare. The catalogue was compiled by Jean Noël Paquot (1722-1803), scholar, professor of Hebrew, and librarian at the University of Louvain and later to the duc d'AreNberg. Paquot provides uncommonly long (and accurate) title transcriptions, authors' names for anonymous works, critical annotations, and full pagination collations with lists of contents. Saroléa, the wealthy canon of the Liège cathedral, was close to many members of the Enlightenment. He formed a library rich in botany, French literature, geography, and history. 2144 lots including some MSS. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Very good copy. Contemporary manuscript exlibris on the paste-down endpaper: "Ex Bibliotheca SS. Luca Col. Med. Anlv. Socii." ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 597-"Il est utile parce qu'il donne avec le plus grand détail le contenu de chaque volume, le nombre des pages et des planches qui s'y trouvent." .

AN ABRIDGEMENT OF THE PRACTICE OF MIDWIFERY: AND A SET OF ANATOMICAL TABLES WITH EXPLANATIONS. Collected from the works of the celebrated, W. Smellie, M.D

Boston: J. Norman, [1786].. [2],56pp. plus thirty-nine plates. Antique-style three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt with leather label. Some offsetting from plates. Light foxing. Very good. First American edition. Originally published in London in 1752 under the title A TREATISE ON THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF MIDWIFERY. This work is the first illustrated medical book published in North America and the first book on obstetrics published in the United States. "Smellie contributed more to the fundamentals of obstetrics than virtually any individual. In his Treatise, he described more accurately than any previous writer the mechanism of parturition.... He was the first to lay down safe rules regarding the use of forceps, and personally introduced the steel-lock, the curved, and the double forceps..." - G&M. The thirty-nine engraved plates by John Norman, copied from the originals, are quite clean, and graphically illustrate the obstetric processes described. EVANS 19992. ESTC W8606. AUSTIN 1754.

Goldsmiths?-Kress library of economic literature ; no. 13181.5. Sur l'auteur, voir Pere Molas Ribalta, "La política del tinte en la España del siglo XVIII" in: "Espacio, Tiempo y Forma", IV, t. 7, (1994) pp.55-68. Palau, 87930. Slight wear and some small chips to bindings, corners worn, 2 tiny holes in spine of Volume I, upper hinge of Volume II just starting to crack at tail, small crack and pinhole in lower hinge of Volume IV, plus a small hole near head of spine repaired with darker leather, shelf numbers on pastedowns, a tiny area of worming on endpapers and half-title of Volume I, 2 initials stamped in top margin of title pages, some pages lightly age-browned, small closed tear to 2 lower margins, 1 fore-edge margin slightly chipped due to paper flaw. Bindings tight and firm. A very good clean set. The first edition was published in 1782 and both first and second editions are scarce. The author tells us in his Preface that the second edition is a very different work from the first, there are large additions and it has been much revised and corrected. Fourcroy (1755-1809) was born in Paris and studied medicine, graduating in 1780. Instead of practising he immediately turned his attention to the study of science and in particular chemistry. With the help of Buffon in 1784 he succeeded Macquer to the chair of Chemistry in the Jardin des Plantes and became a pioneer in the field of organic chemistry. He worked with Lavoisier on the new nomenclature for chemistry. He was a Deputy at the National Convention, and became one of the leading members of the Committee of Public Instruction. He assisted in organising the Ecole Polytechnique and in founding schools of medicine and was created director general of Public Instruction. His researches covered the whole field of chemistry but his most important investigations referred to animal substances, the study of which had never been so systematically undertaken previously. His teaching and researches resulted in the publication of several important works, this being his first.         Silva: or, a Discourse of Forest-trees, and the Propagation of Timber in his Majesty’s Dominions… with notes by A. Hunter…to which is added the Terra: A Philosophical Discourse of Earth

York: : A. Ward for J. Dodsley, T. Cadell and others, , 1786. Second Hunter edition. Contemporary red morocco.. Very Good. 2nd Edition. 4to( 30.4 x 22.9cm). Contemporary red morocco. Three (3) parts in one. Collation: [xliv], 311, [13]; [ii] 343, [11]; [viii], 74 [4] pp. + Engraved portrait after Bartolozzi, 43 hand-colored plates on thick paper, 1 double-page, two folding letterpress tables. The spine has six compartments with gilt raised bands and gilt title; gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (lightly rubbed), with a contemporary fore-edge painting of a country house set in wooded parkland. There are inner gilt dentelles and marble end papers. The portrait has foxing and small-discolored area at the bottom gutter. The text and plates have some minor marginal foxing, which is more moderate when several plates are placed together or a leaf of text separates two plates. Many of the plates were engraved by J. Miller and a few other plates by S. H. Grimm. All the plates are finely colored. Provenance: W.A. Foyle bookplate on front free end paper and amoral bookplate (pasted over earlier bookplate) of Bertram Mitford Freeman. Keynes notes the existence of two other colored copies, one in the British Museum and the other at Harvard University Arnold Arboretum and Asa Gray Herbarium. Although this edition was published in two volumes, the present copy with the fine red morocco binding and excellently executed, fore-edge painting make this a fine copy with all plates’ hand colored on thick paper. Keynes notes that Hunter was an English physician who practiced in York, where he died in 1809. “His mind was versatile like Evelyn’s, and he varied his medical work by becoming an authority on agriculture and forestry….Hunter’s edition of Evelyn’s /Silva/, under taken as a relaxation, proved to be a popular success, so that five editions of this ponderous work were called for up to 1825. His annotations are learned and extensive, and he claims that the text was collated with all five of the original editions, and corrected with the help of ‘some Original Manuscripts’.” In the present work, which contains additional plates and the /Terra: A Philosophical Discourse of Earth. / (Nissen 615; Henrey 137; Keynes 48)

Londos overcomes 3000 Turks by hunger at Vostitza."

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, with modern colour, of Andreas Londos at Vostitza, from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments. iAndreas Londos Born in Vostitsa in 1786, he was initiated into the Filiki Eteria in 1818 and was one of the first military leaders to raise the banner of revolt in the Peloponnese. On 23 March 1821, he and 400 Greek fighters marched on Vostitsa. Hearing rumours of a general insurrection, the Turks fled across the Gulf of Corinth and took refuge at Amfissa. The Greeks captured the town without a fight. Leaving 200 men as a garrison, Londos then marched on Patras to join the siege of the city's fortress. Image bright and clean. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders. Not in Blackmer ,Droulia or Contominas. Philhellenic Vostitza Andreas Londos

London: for the author, and sold by J. Robson, 1786. 4to. [8], 7-60 pp. Stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait by Caroline Watson (1761-1814) after a crayon portrait by F. Ruysdell; engraved plate bound at end. 282 x 227 mm. (uncut). Original plain blue wrappers. Fine copy, inscribed on the title by Jeffries' grandson, Benjamin Joy Jeffries (1833-1915): "Mr. George H. Gabb London with the compts. of the Author's grandson, Dr. B. Joy Jeffries. Boston, Mass 1911." First Edition. Garrison-Morton 2137.2: "The first flight by a physician, the first crossing of the English Channel by balloon, and the first international flight." Jeffries, a wealthy American physician, financed two balloon voyages made with the French balloonist Jean-Pierre Blanchard, during which he made the first attempts to gather scientific data from a lighter-than-air vehicle. The first ascent, on 30 November 1784, took place over London and lasted one hour and twenty-one minutes; Jeffries used an array of instruments to make observations of temperature, air pressure and humidity (up to a height of 9,309 feet), which conform closely to modern determinations. On 7 January 1785 Jeffries and Blanchard made a second ascent at Dover and performed the first aerial crossing of the English Channel, landing in the forest of Guines in the French province of Artois after two hours and forty-seven minutes. This copy was inscribed by Jeffries' grandson, Dr. Benjamin Joy Jeffries, a physician specializing in diseases of the eyes and skin. Hodgson, pp. 167-171. The romance of ballooning, p. 48.       Sthlm, Kongl. tryckeriet, 1786. 8:o. (2),1-3,6-35 s.

The Oyster Girl; The Grape Girl

London: J. Young, 1 April 1786. Mezzotints, by John Young, both tipped onto 19th-century wove paper mounts. 13 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches approx. 17 3/8 x 12 1/2; 16 1/8 x 11 5/8 inches. A pair of very fine mezzotints by one of the greatest engravers of his day. This pair of beautifully executed character studies were published by Young in 1786, the year following his issue of a pair of very similar prints after Johan Zoffany, titled The Water-cress Girl and The Flower Girl. As a group they can all be seen as precursors of Francis Wheatley's celebrated series The Cries of London.

Plate volume: [2], (1)-17 [1]; [3], 20-38; [3], 42-68; [3], 72-87 [1]; [3], 90-111 [1] pp., with 5 divisional titles and 69 plates numbered I-XXXV consisting of 34 plates engraved with a combination of aquatint, line engraving and stipple-engraving, and printed in colors, 34 accompanying outline plates and a single line-engraved plate (no. XVIII) after Soemmerring's "De basi encephali" (1778), all plates with very little occasional foxing, mild browning, short marginal tears to some plates, top margin of pl. 4 and 6 and lower margin of plate 12 with light staining (not affecting plate images), text to plates of part 1 somewhat dampstained in upper margin. Contemporary brown half leather (worn, cracks in joints, faded gilt spines in seven compartments, damages at head and foot). A good and clean, wide margined copy, very rare in this complete state. ---- Norman 2150; Waller 9953; Garrison-Morton 401.2; Brunet V, 1176; Heirs of Hippocrates 1073. - FIRST EDITION of "the most accurate neuroanatomical work produced before the advent of microscopic staining techniques" (Garrison-Morton). Vicq d'Azyr, permanent secretary to the Societe Royale de Medecine and personal physician to Marie-Antoinette, was a skilled comparative anatomist, eminent veterinarian, and prolific writer of medical articles and treatises, those on comparative anatomy and public health being of the most lasting importance. The interest of the present work, projected as a multi-volume study of human anatomy and physiology but never finished, lies in its intelligent utilization of the new print-making technique of aquatint for the purpose of accurate anatomical illustration. The striking illustrations "created a sensation at the time," according to Brunet. Vicq d'Azyr's principal original contributions to the understanding of human anatomy lay in his studies of the brain, the subject of this first volume. He developed a technique of brain dissection using the hardening effect of alcohol, which avoided damage to the delicate surfaces (fixatives such as formalin having not yet been developed). "Like Steno before him, Vicq d'Azyr attached great importance to the structure of the fibers in the white matter of the brain. He also described the mammillothalamic bundle and Reil's ribbon. Rejecting the views of Malpighi and Vieussens, who attributed no functional importance to the cerebral cortex, Vicq d'Azyr attempted to systematize its complex morphology. In particular he isolated the convolution of the corpus callosum, the cuneus, and the sulcus separating the frontal lobe from the parietal, later described by Rolando (1829)" (DSB). One of his principal concerns was the absence of a standard nomenclature for the cerebral convolutions, a problem that he attempted to remedy in the present work, which contains the entire corpus of his work on the brain. Vicq d'Azyr had commenced publication of the work in parts, undoubtedly at his own expense. The Revolution prevented its completion, and, since the instructions for binding the work were probably never issued, copies differ in the order in which they are bound. COMPLETE COPIES LIKE THIS ARE RARE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Characaturas by Leonardo da Vinci from Drawings by Winceslaus Hollar out of the Portland Museum

[London] Published as the Act directs Nov 1. 1786 by John Clarke, N. 291 Strand, 1786. FIRST EDITION. 4to, 244 x 200 mms., fine engraved portrait of da Vinci as frontispiece, engraved title-page, and 17 engraved plates (on recto only), original boards, with letter-press for a "Family Bible" off-setting on front boards; small ink stain on title-page, spine defective, joints cracked and tender. Winceslaus Hollar (1607 - 1677) was born in Prague but died in London, having joined the household staff of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel and settling in England in 1637. At the end of his life he had produced some 2700 etchings. Richard Pennington in his Descriptive Catalogue of the Etched Work of Wenceslaus Hollar (1982) says of this publication that "It is a book of sixty-four heads, four to a plate, but so crudely etched as to make one sceptical of the assertion that they are really based on drawings by H[ollar]."

London: Printed for the author and sold [by J.Robson], 1786 London: Printed for the author and sold [by J.Robson], 1786. First Edition. Brockett 6577; Gamble 4878. Lacking the frontispiece. 11.25" x 9". 4 + 60 pp + 1. 3/4 morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. Some darkening and marginal staining to the contents, minor soiling, title page worn and chipped with repairs, plate of The Column marginally chipped, backed with tissue. Old ink inscription at title page top: "Walter Cumming {?} from his friend George Jeffrey". 1906 rubberstamp of Boston Medical Library at center of title page. Overall, very good. One of the rarest of English-language pieces on lighter-than-air aviation. Two Aerial Voyages is Dr. Jeffries' account of his two historic ballooning voyages: "The first voyage, on the Thirtieth of November, 1784, from London to Kent; The Second, on the Seventh of January, 1785, from England into France." The landing spot, in the Forest of Guines, in France, is memorialized by "The Column" (rear engraving). A historic rarity on two counts: it is the first English-language treatise on aeronautics by an American, and it's the record of the first crossing of the English Channel by a balloonist. L23
