[Palau 251938: Sabin 56260] Laws relating to the practice of mining in New Spain (Mexico), prepared by (or for) Josef de Galvez. First published in Madrid in a folio edition in 1783, then in Lima: Palau notes a folio edition there in 1785, then this quarto edition the year later; it was republished as late as 1812. Galvez, a lawyer by profession, was an important royal official (Visitador), of the highest rank, who spent the years of 1765 - 71 in Mexico . He sponsored the settlement of California and generally reformed Mexican finances and civil service under the new Bourbon dispensation. (He suffered from mental illness and apparently ended his own life.) He was created the Marques de Sonora for his valuable services to the crown, among which may be numbered this digest of mining laws, of which Sabin says it is "a rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs." Fine, fresh copy, with marbled edges and bound in contemporary vellum (ties missing).

Lectures on Select Subjects in Mechanics, Hydrostatics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, and Optics. With The Use of the Globes, The Art of Dialling, and The Calculation of the Mean Times of New and Full Moons and Eclipses. [Bound with:] A Supplement to the

Preceding Lectures London: Printed for W Strahan J Rivington and Sons and others: Sixth edition 1786 - 8vo., xiv, 402pp. + 48pp., half-title present, with 36 finely engraved folding plates (complete) of scientific phenomena such as eyes, air pumps, globes, cranes, sun dials , marbled endpapers, bound in contemporary speckled calf, professionally and skilfully rebacked with the original morocco title label neatly relaid. An unusally VG+ clean tightly bound copy with all the plates in nice condition. James Ferguson (1710-76), astronomer, instrument maker, lecturer, natural and experimental philosopher, was born at Core of Mayen, near Rothiemay in Banffshire, Scotland. According to his autobiography, he learnt to read by hearing his father teach his elder brother, and with the help of an old woman was able to read quite well before his father thought of teaching him. After his father taught him to write, he was sent at the age of seven for three months to the grammar school at Keith. His taste for mechanics was about this time accidentally awakened on seeing his father making use of a lever to raise a part of the roof of his house — an exhibition of strength which excited his wonder. In 1720 he was sent to a neighbouring farm to keep sheep, where he amused himself by making models of machines, and at night he studied the stars. Afterwards, as a servant with a miller, and then with a doctor, he met with hardships which rendered his constitution feeble through life. Being compelled by his health to return home, he then amused himself with making a clock having wooden wheels and a whalebone spring. When slightly recovered he showed this and some other inventions to a gentleman, who employed him to clean his clocks, and to make his house his home. He there began to draw patterns for needlework, and his success in this art led him to think of becoming a painter. In 1734 he went to Edinburgh, where he began to make portraits in miniature, by which means, while engaged in his scientific studies, he supported himself and his family for many years. Subsequently he settled at Inverness, where he drew up his Astronomical Rotula for showing the motions of the planets, places of the sun and moon, &c., and in 1743 went to London, England, which was his home for the rest of his life. He wrote various papers for the Royal Society of London, of which he became a Fellow in November 1763, devised astronomical and mechanical models, and in 1748 began to give public lectures on experimental philosophy. These he repeated in most of the principal towns in England. His deep interest in his subject, his clear explanations, his ingeniously constructed diagrams, and his mechanical apparatus rendered him one of the most successful of popular lecturers on scientific subjects. It is, however, as the inventor and improver of astronomical and other scientific apparatus, and as a striking instance of self-education, that he claims a place among the most remarkable men of science of his country. During the latter years of his life he was in receipt of a pension of £50 from the privy purse. He died in London on 17 November 1776 and was buried in St Marylebone churchyard.         A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope,

London, G. G. J. and J. Robinson,, 1786. towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, and Round the World: but chiefly into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the Year 1772, to 1776. Translated from the Swedish Original. 2 volumes, quarto. (222 × 272mm). Bound in contemporary lightly sprinkled tan full calf, sympathetically rebacked, smooth spine, double gilt ruled compartments, red-brown morocco labels. Folding map and 10 engraved plates. Some light browning, short closed tear to the map, boards a little rubbed, but overall a very good copy. Second Edition, Corrected. A botanist and disciple of Linnaeus, Sparrman's desire to travel was stimulated by an early trip as a surgeon on a Royal Swedish East India Company ship to Canton via the Cape. Further opportunities were thwarted by his lack of funds. However, in 1771 his friend Capt. Ekeberg of the RSEIC obtained for him the position of tutor to the children of M. Kerst sub-Governor of the Cape. Once settled there his intention to undertake an expedition to the interior was interrupted by the arrival at the Cape of Cook on his Second Voyage, who Sparrman accompanied as assistant to the naturalist Johann Georg Forster, experiences which he recounts but briefly here. On his return in 1775 he had accrued sufficient funds to finance his own expedition and "... set out overland from the Cape... in the company of a South African named Immelmanm paralleling the Southern coast and visiting the regions of Swellerdam, Mossel Bay and the country to the north of Port Elizabeth. His furthest east was the Great Fish River." [Howgego] Theal describes this as the C18th's "most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people residing in it." He made the first study of the Bushmen and relates many incidents illustrating the hospitality of the Dutch farmers and their "dense ignorance" of matters outside their own country. Also alludes to the "cruelty of the treatment of the slaves by the lower classes of the colonists." [Mendelssohn] On his return to Sweden he was elected to the Academy of Sciences and appointed as conservator of the museum. Later returned to Africa as part of an expedition to the West Coast searching for suitable locations for Swedish settlement. Attractive contemporary armorial sepia-printed bookplates of Smith, motto "temperato splendeat usu", to the front pastedowns.

Paris 1786 - Contemporary marbled calf gilt, covers with double-fillet borders and centrally-placed royal arms of Louis XVI of France, expertly rebacked to style, spines in eight compartments with raised bands, bands highlighted with roll-tool, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, blue morocco lettering-piece in the third, the other compartments with decorative repeat pattern of large central flower spray tool surrounded by small tools and foliage corner-pieces rebacked, expert repairs to corners Provenance: Earls of Derby (Knowsley Hall, armorial bookplate) "The finest collection of flower engravings made during the seventeenth century" (Blunt). This very rare complete collection of engravings is by or after Nicolas Robert, the greatest botanical artist of the seventeenth century. Together, the plates form a valuable and unique record of plants in cultivation in the second half of that century."The Recueil des plantes was judged by the master flower painter Gerard van Spaendonck to be the most beautiful botanical work ever published" (Oak Spring Flora). Hunt writes that the plates to this work "rank among the best botanical engravings ever produced." The work was never formally published or offered for public sale. The present copy was given as a Royal gift in about 1786 and is bound in a binding bearing the French Royal arms. Notably, it includes the important frontispiece (not always present) by and after Sebastien Le Clerc, depicting Louis XIV visiting a meeting of the Académie Royale des Sciences. Subsequent to its gift in the 18th century, this copy entered the great natural history library of the Earls of Derby at Knowsley Hall. "Nicolas Robert (1614-85) must ever be remembered for three important contributions to botanical art: - for the famous Guirlande de Julie , for his flower paintings on vellum for Gaston, and Louis XIV; and for [the present work] - the finest collection of flower engravings made during the seventeenth century. Robert's name first occurs as an illustrator of a small book of etchings of flowers entitled Fiori Diversi (Rome: 1640). His father was an inn-keeper at Langres, and the circumstances in which the young man made the journey to Italy remain unknown; but he must already have made some reputation for himself, for the following year he was chosen to illustrate a book of unusual interest and importance, the Guirlande de Julie . Before [the baron de] Sainte-Maure set out for the wars, he had given his fiancée [the witty, beautiful and virtuous Julie d'Angennes, daughter of Madame de Rambouillet], as a birthday gift, an album of flowers - the chef d'oeuvre de la galanterie known as the "Guirlande de Julie." In the making of it, Nicolas Robert had collaborated with Jarry, the greatest calligrapher of the day . Overnight Robert found himself famous; shortly afterwards, when Gaston d'Orléans was seeking a painter to make a permanent record of his collection, his eye naturally fell upon the young painter of the celebrated Guirlande . To form a true impression of the diversity and brilliance of Robert's talent as a painter, it is necessary to study his work at the Muséum of the Jardin des Plantes . Outline is reduced to a bare minimum, and, as in medieval illumination, the neutral tone of the shadows is often disregarded. Form and texture are suggested by an infinity of finely hatched strokes. At the time of Gaston's death in 1660, the collection filled five large folio volumes. The majority of the drawings are flowers, though there are also many birds and other objects of natural history. Appointed in 1664 to the post of 'peintre ordinaire de Sa Majesté pour la miniature,' Robert now continued in Paris and at Versailles the work he had begun at Blois . It is believed to have been the great Scottish botanist Robert Morison (1620-1683), a Royalist in exile from 1650 to 1660, Superintendent of Gastons' gardens at Blois, who first persuaded Nicolas Robert to interest himself in scientific botanical i [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Group of Four Items, Manuscript and Partially Printed, pertaining to Nicholas Biddle:

      - Group of manuscript and partially printed materials Nicholas Biddle, author, scholar, statesman and financier 1786-1844. Biddle established the Bank of the United States as a prototype of the modern central banking system. Using the power of the bank to expand and contract the money supply, Biddle played a prominent role in creating a stable currency and in bringing order to the chaotic American marketplace. Biddle, Nicholas (1786-1844) [Autograph Letter Signed, Philadelphia February 9, 1831 to Silas E. Burrows, New York] One page quarto, inscribed on a four page bi-folium, old folds, hole in integral address leaf where sealing wax was removed during opening, postal markings, else in very good clean condition. Letter written to Burrows while Biddle, as stockholder's director, was embroiled in controversy surrounding the Bank of the United States. Biddle replies to Burrows' reported ill health and then touches upon the subject of the Bank: "¿The vote in the Senate is considered there as a very strong one, and proves much more than the numerical difference would at first indicate. It is so harsh & ungracious & unusual a thing to refuse leave, that many voted for it who are friendly to the Bank and if the bill had been introduced I believe that on its final rejection the vote would have been very nearly if not two thirds of the Senate. I think that there were among those who voted for leave five who would have voted to reject and of the five absentees two certainly & probably three would have been on their side- so that I should think a vote of 30 for the Bank would have been obtainable." Biddle, Nicholas (1786-1844) [Autograph Letter Signed, Paris, January 29, 1805, to Nathaniel Cutting, Paris] One page, quarto, inscribed on four page bi-folium, sealing wax and postal markings, else in very good, clean condition. Written while Biddle, was Secretary to General John Armstrong, the American Minister to France. Among the tasks which fell to the American legation at this time was the settlement of the claims of those who had been despoiled by French privateers in the Napoleonic Wars. Biddle, though only 18 at the time, was entrusted with the auditing and payment of these spoliation claims allowed by the French Government, which were to be met out of the Louisiana Purchase Fund. The present letter deals with these matters: "I am directed by General Armstrong to inform you, in reply to your note of the 22d inst. That with regard to the cases of Andrew Dunlap & Joseph White as they do not come before him under the principles of the 10 Art. of the convention he cannot know the amount of the liquidation. He desires me further to mention to you that the claimants will not have long to wait for the issuing of the Bills and that he does not want the books & charts, a list of which you have inclosed to him." Pair of printed drafts. signed by Biddle: United States of America. State of Pennsylvania. The Bank of the United States Philadelphia [Oct. 2nd (in mss)] 1837.[Fourteen] Months after date, The President, Directors, and Company f the Bank of the United States, promise to pay at its London Agency to the Bearer, [One Thousand Pounds Sterling] ¿ [Philadelphia: Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co., 1837] engraved draft, accomplished in manuscript, signed by Nicholas Biddle and the cashier of the Bank of the United States. Marked paid. Paper somewhat browned, old folds and creases, small hole in the "F" of the word "Fourteen" where the ink burned through the paper. Else good. Small engraved draft, 1/11/1839, drawn on the Bank of the United States, signed by Biddle, paper browned, stained, some loss, mounted on old sheet, fair despite all faults.       En Valencia, por Joseph Estevan y Cervera, 1786. - in-4. 4ff. 30pp. 2ff. 60pp. Broché, couverture de l'époque. Edition Originale. Goldsmiths’-Kress library of economic literature ; no. 13181.5. Paris; Engraved index leaf listing the plates 1-20 (plates 18-20 to be bound as a wide panorama). 24 engraved plates, complete as issued. A RARE WORK WITH FINE PLATES. The first 16 plates are derived from the larger prints by Cochin based on drawings by Giuseppe Castiglione, a missionary artist in the Court of the Emperor. Helman added 8 further prints to make up this work, which records the battles, victories and ceremonies of the Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796). Cochin seized on the commerciality of Chinese imagery in the European market in the late 18th century, publishing several other works on China. This series of plates is rare, with just 3 copies of the work recorded in ABPC since 1977.

Provenance: Arthur Jacob Bequest; RCSI library (library- and ownership stamps to titles). ---- Poggendorf I, 546 - D.S.B. IV, 29. - FIRST EDITION, London issue. Jean André Deluc (1727-1817) was a Swiss-born British geologist and meteorologist who studied the effects of heat and pressure on the mercury barometer and, as a pioneer in scientific mountaineering, published the first correct rules for using the barometer to find the heights of mountains. He discovered that water attains its maximum density at 4° C and developed the theory that the quantity of water vapour in any given space is independent of the density of the air in which it is diffused. He further noticed the disappearance of heat in the thawing of ice about the same time that Joseph Black founded on it his ingenious hypothesis of latent heat. The present work on meteorology also contains important sections on heat and combustion and the controversy over the discovery of latent heats (see D. McKie and N. H. de V. Heathcote, The discovery of specific and latent heats (London, 1935) pp. 48-50). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed "Sydney" regarding the transfer of a young lieutenant

Albemarle Street: 23 August, 1786. Manuscript letter on laid and water-marked paper, folded to letter-size 240 x 186 mm., closely written to 2 pp., manuscript docket note to fourth page; splitting at old folds, some browning yet good. A rare example of Sydney's signature while Home Secretary; the letter seeks patronage favour for private rather than public interests. On 18 August 1786, a mere five days before writing this letter, Sydney had delivered his speech to the Treasury promoting Botany Bay as the site of Britain's new penal colony. This manuscript, which presumably because it concerns private affairs is entirely in the Home Secretary's hand, concerns the reinstatement of one "Lieutenant Hutchinson", formerly of the 46th Regiment and now on half-pay. It appears Sydney had some affection for young Hutchinson, stressing the importance of finding him a position and 'taking him out of a state of idleness to which much danger belongs in the case of a young man of very high spirits & very considerable talents'. Given the dating of this letter, it is clear that this was the William Hutchinson who was posted lieutenant of the 59th Regiment in early September the same year, a few days after this letter was sent (testament to Sydney's political clout). Hutchinson's regiment was stationed in Gibraltar.
