Grundsätze der Polizey, Handlung und Finanz. Zu dem Leitfaden des politischen Studiums.

Wien, bei Joseph Edlen von Kurzbek (5.A.) und bey Alb. Carmesina (6.A.), 1786-87.. 5., vermehrte und verbess. A. und 6. Aufl. 3 Bde. Kl.-8vo. (I = 5.A.:) 6 Bll., 552; (II = 6.A.:) 7 Bll., 592, 1 Bl.; (III = 5.A.:) 8 Bll., 520 S. Zeitgenössische Halblederbände mit reicher Rückenvergoldung, Bd. 2 neu angeglichen.. - I., Allgemeine Einleitung.

Minime fioriture. Una firma antica al titolo. Bella copia in barbe. Prima edizione, molto rara. Reale, Miscell. Storia patria 64, Memorie storiche intorno all'origine di Beroldo di Sassonia).". Spreti, 999. Saffroy, I, n. 3975. Manno, I, 2621. D.B.I., cit.

Octavo, uncut in original plain blue-grey wrappers, early ink spine label; a few bumps but very good. Attractive Didot-printed work on scurvy with references to James Lind and Captain Cook: 'Les Médicins Anglois ont donné l'exemple à ceux des autres nations...'.This was translated into French by the magisterially named Joseph Vigarous de Montagut, a physician and member of the Société Royale des Sciences de Montpellier. In many ways Motagut's translation is more interesting than the original English because of the introduction he contributed which specifically noted the importance of combating scurvy on long voyages, and which is an interesting addition to the promotion of French voyages of exploration by French scientists. Montagut notes that Milman should be read in conjunction with Lind, and that the practical details have been expertly displayed by Cook in his voyages around the world. It is a companion to the 1783 Paris edition of Lind's Traité du Scorbut. The work originally appeared in English as An Enquiry into the Source from whence the Symptoms of the Scurvy and of Putrid Fevers arise (1782) with a dedication to Lord Southampton. The author was Sir Francis Milman (1746-1821) a physician who, in 1785, was made physician extraordinary to the King's household, and who had delivered the Gulstonian lectures in 1780 on the subject of scurvy. A worthy practitioner rather than a great medical theorist, his acquaintance with the works of James Lind made him an early convert to modern cures for scurvy, and an important populariser of a more general understanding of the disease. The work also includes some valuable notes on classical outbreaks of the diseases such as that mentioned by Strabo.

A Catalogue of the Portland Museum, lately the property of the Duchess Dowager of Portland, deceased, which will be sold by auction by Mr Skinner and Co , on Monday the 24th of April, 1786 and the thirty-seven following days

London: Skinner and Co., 1786. Quarto, pp. viii, 3-194 (complete thus) with engraved frontispiece not present in all copies, also with 6 pp. supplementary catalogue of cameos and precious stones loosely inserted, completely annotated throughout in manuscript; recent gilt decorated by Aquarius. An almost completely annotated copy: apparently the auctioneer's retained catalogue, with the rare supplement. A superbly annotated copy of this rare and important auction catalogue, with many natural history lots that had been originally gathered by Cook in the Pacific. This is the most annotated copy of the catalogue known to have been offered for sale, and includes the names of the purchasers of many lots not known from the printed record of the sale. In fact, the internal evidence of the annotations strongly suggests that this is the auctioneer's retained copy, as it includes occasional notice of items being returned after the sale (see, for example, p. 21). This copy is further enhanced by the inclusion of the exceptionally rare supplement, only recorded in a handful of known copies. The catalogue is a testament to the remarkable Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, second Duchess of Portland. Patron of Captain Cook, friend of Rousseau and Reynolds, colleague of Daniel Solander, bluestocking and philanthropist, she made her home, Bulstrode House in Buckinghamshire (or "The Hive" as it was known in court circles), a place of great activity and home to her private museum, which was 'considered the finest in England and rivalled the best in Europe' (S. Peter Dance, A History of Shell Collecting, p. 73). The collection is of particular interest for its many hundreds of natural history lots, including an enormous and important collection of shells. Many of the specimens had been collected from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific during Cook's first voyage, and were presented by Banks and Solander in person, when they visited the Duchess in 1771.As the introduction attests, it was the Duchess of Portland's 'intention to have had every unknown species in the three kingdoms of nature described and published to the world', but this hope was thwarted by the death of her secretary Daniel Solander in 1783, and her own two years later. Her children were uninterested in the collection and it was sold to finance her son's political career and pay her creditors. The auction was held from 24 April to 3 July 1786 and included over 4000 lots. The catalogue was drawn up by her chaplain and (long-time) librarian the Reverend John Lightfoot. It was 'an impressive publication and was to become of lasting importance, once it was realized that it utilised valid binomial nomenclature to denote most of the zoological specimens that many scientifically correct names were first published therein. Another unusual feature of the catalogue is the frequent appearance of locality information in the description of lots' (J.M. Chalmers-Hunt, Natural History Auctions 1700-1972, p. 46).Although all copies of this work are rare, this example is particularly significant as it clearly belonged to someone who attended every day of the sale and recorded the sale of every lot - a Herculean task in itself. As such, this copy gives a rare opportunity to follow the dispersal of the Portland Museum. Moreover, comparison of this copy with both another marked copy and the extremely rare published list, A marked catalogue containing the lots, what each respectively sold for, and the names of the purchasers of the... Portland Museum (1786), has proved that there are significant discrepancies between all three. These differences are too manifold to be enumerated, but suffice to note that this copy does supply the names of the buyers of many lots which are not known from the printed list. The buyers were a who's-who of contemporary collectors, with great names including George Humphrey (the great shell dealer and Pacific expert, who bought widely in the sale), Forster (given the date, this would almost certainly have been Johann, rather than his son George), and John Francillon (a collector who is known to have also collected First Fleet and NSW items). This copy, numbered "37" in manuscript on the title-page, also includes the engraved frontispiece which is missing in many copies. Loosely inserted but annotated in the same hand is the 6-page supplement A Catalogue of a very valuable collection of Cameos, Intaglios, and Precious Stones, and other Curiosities' being part of a late much celebrated Cabinet, many out of the Arundel collection... lately the property of the Duchess Dowager of Portland, deceased.

        Dictionary of the English Language:

London - Harrison and Co, 1786 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Folio edition bound in calf. This is the Harrison edition, the first one-volumeedition of Johnson's dictionary. Needs a rebind (maybe a 200 cost, but obviously very well worth if for this book)This edition includes advertisement leaf, The Life of Dr Samuel Johnson, Editor's Preface, The Plan of a Dictionary, Johnson's Preface, The History of the English Language, The Dictionary and a supplement of additional words. It is missing the frontispiece. Dictionary of the English Language, one of the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language, was prepared by Samuel Johnson and published on 15 April 1755. The dictionary responded to a widely felt need for stability in the language. Calls and proposals for a new dictionary had been made for decades before a group of London booksellers (including Robert Dodsley and Thomas Longman) contracted Johnson in June, 1746 to prepare the work for the sum of 1500 Guineas (1575). Though he expected to be finished in three years, it took Johnson nearly nine years to complete. Remarkably, he did so singlehandedly, with only clerical assistance to copy out the illustrative quotations that he had marked in books. Johnson also prepared several revised editions. Condition: Would benefit from a binder's attention. Both boards are detached. The binding of the text block is generally firm, although the first ten pages are detached but present (save for the frontis, which is missing). There is some wear to the extremities including some considerable bumping and some rubbing to the boards. Part of the spine is missing (as shown in photo). Internally, the pages are generally bright with some staining to the lower margin of the pages and some creasing. Overall the condition of this volume is fair due to the binding but good internally. commands upto 3000..

Sketches of the History of the Austrian Netherlands: With Remarks on the Constitution, Commerce, Arts, and General State of these Provinces

London: Printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson..., 1786. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. [viII], 310, including half-title, contemporary calf, gilt spine, morocco label; some very slight wear to binding, but a very good copy. Inscribed "From the Author" at the top of the title-page. With the bookplate of the Dunnichen Library on the front paste-down end-paper. Shaw sings the praises of the Emperor Joseph the Second, but his useful and often perceptive work ends with this observation: "general tranquillity is now established in Europe, and gives leisure to Princes to bend their whole care to the government of their dominions. What an accession to the happiness of mankind, if philosophy, which has made such progress in this age, could engage Sovereigns to maintain this happy tranquillity, and to seek their chief glory in the improvement and just regulation of the States that are committed to their charge!" The work was translated into French in 1788. ESTC T105639 locates seven copies in British libraries (L, Csj, O, Owo, SAN, SHp) and eight copies (CSmH, CU-SB, ICN, ICU, KU-S, MSaE, NNUT, PPL) in United States libraries.
