History of the Voyages and Discoveries Made in the North

London:: Printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson,. 1786.. First English Edition. Hardcover. Very good overall. Important work by leading scientist and explorer who accompanied Captain James Cook on his second voyage of discovery. Lacks last page of Index and the general map of Asia.Includes the two other large folding maps, the North Pole (frontispiece) and of Europe (p74), both by Forster.Johann Reinhold Forster (1729-1798), author and naturalist, was born in Prussia. He moved to England in 1766, eventually producing pamphlets on natural history. His acquaintance with Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander allowed him to be elected fellow of the Royal Society; another influential acquaintance got him the position of scientist on Captain Cook's second voyage, when Banks withdrew. It was Forster who convinced Andreas Sparrman, who was exploring South African natural history at Cape Town, to join the expedition. The volume consists of Books I, II & III. Book III, 'Discoveries Made in the North in Modern Times', Section XXXVII pertains to Cook's last voyage. Forster writes about the naming of Bering's Straits, the ice which prevented any further travel north, and the return to the Sandwich Islands, "which he had discovered just before his arrival on this coast". The death of Cook is described: "the young men that were with him must have been in some measure undisciplined and disorderly, otherwise he would not have lost his life". (p404).Large 4to, xvi, 489pp, Index, two folding maps. Lacking the last page of the Index & the General Map of Asia. Full calf, with raised bands, gilt rules at spine. Manuscript paper title label on spine. Boards rubbed and worn, calf pulling away from foredge at front board. Spine rubbed, small perforation about three inches from base. Sabin; 25138.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Berlin, 30. XII. 1786.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo..

        Miyako Meisho Zue

1786. KYOTO. Miyako Meisho Zue. (Collection of Pictures of Famous Places of the Capital). Six Volumes. By Rito Akisato. Xylographically printed and illustrated throughout, including many double page illustrations by Takehara Shunchôsai Nobushige. Osaka: Kawachiya Tasuke, Tenmei 6 [1786]. PLUS: _____________. Shûi-Miyako Meisho Zue. (Supplement to the Collection of Pictures of Famous Places of the Capital). Five Volumes. Xylographically printed and illustrated throughout, including many double page illustrations by Takehara Shunchôsai Nobushige. 4to., 259 x 183 mm, bound in original publisher's Japanese paper wrappers bound accordion style and stitched with silk-thread. Preserved in blue Japanese shitzu case. Osaka: Kawachiya Tasuke, Tenmei 7 [1787]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of this exceptional eighteenth-century guide to the famous sites of Kyoto and the surrounding region. Akisato's guide documents the views of the Kyoto region through detailed and specific visual and textual information. Because of the devastating Kyoto fire of 1788, copies of this rare work that have survived are of the utmost historical significance. The eleven volumes contain over 410 woodblocks printed on hand-made mulberry paper by Takehara Shunchôsai Nobushige who was active from 1772 to 1801. The illustrations record Buddhist and Shinto shrines and temples, religious ceremonies and funeral processions, New Year's celebrations, processions of the Emperor throughout Kyoto, portrayals of everyday life in the city such as merchant shops like the fan maker or the kimono seller, establishments for various arts and crafts, refreshment houses, and numerous depictions of aristocratic and Imperial estates. Specific views of note include: the monastery of Honganji dating from the Xth century, the temple of Sanjùsaugendò with the 33 statues of Buddha, a luxurious Imperial cortege, the sub-temples of Daitokuji, and the Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji paviklons, to list but a few. The volumes are dated Anei 9 [1780], however, we know that they were not actually published until Tenmei 6 [1786]. The success enjoyed by Akisato's Miyako Meisho zue was substantial, encouraging him to issue a five volume supplement a year later, with additional views and descriptive text entitled: Shûi-Miyako Meisho Zue, Tenmei 7 [1787]. The text in all volumes is a mixture of Chinese and Japanese; the legends to the illustrations appear in both languages as well. Often there are poetic or literary citations that accompany a particular view. The Imperial Capital of Kyoto was the national symbol of pride and power in Japan for over a thousand years. Most of the Imperial City perished in the great fire of 1788; only the temples and gardens situated in the mountains surrounding Kyoto survived destruction. Hence, Akisato's descriptions and woodcut illustrations remain of paramount value in recording a city that mainly disappeared a mere two years after the book's publication. Akisato's Meisho zue reinvented an old genre of illustrated guide-books in Japan; and within thirty five years most of the major cities and prefectures of Japan that attracted travelers had published guides to their celebrated sites. Akisato Rito (1776-1830) was responsible for the redesign and addition of the six new rocks in the Zen stone-garden masterpiece, Ryoan-ji, after the disastrous fire. In addition to the current publication, his other major works include a further meisho-zue or "guide book: Miyako Rinsen meisho zue (Illustrated Manual of Celebrated Gardens in the Capital) 1799, and the Ishigumi sonou yaegaki den (Transmission of Rock Compositions, Live Gardens, and Eight Types of Fences) 1827. Some minor rubbing to extremities of bindings, a small piece of the title to volume 4 missing, A few other minor paper flaws, overall, a fine, clean set. Rare. PROVENANCE: Early owner's name "Nakamura" (?) inside a few volumes. Kerlen, Catalogue of Pre-Meiji Japanese Books and Maps in Public Collections in the Netherlands, # 1065 & 1066. V.         Superstitio Impugnata (Manuscript)

      - Latin manuscript written in poetic style by C.P.F. Kurrer who was a distinguished member of the famed Latin Society of Jena. 89p. OCLC notes that a 16 page edition was published in Tubingen by Fues in 1786. This much larger version of several thousand lines is entirely handwritten in Latin poetic style. As William Clark as noted in his Charismata and the Origin of Research Universities, p. 158ff., "The Latin Society of Jena (founded 1733) .required members to submit written dissertations exhibiting eloquence and erudition." This was, of course, in contrast to the universities which like its English counterparts were still under the domain of the Aristotelian dominance through the Middle Ages and into the Early Modern period. These highly literate societies which existed outside the university system of rote memory became (as Clark as noted) the predecessor of the modern university system with seminars and original research. The Societas Latina Jenensis according to Scholarly Societies Project was actually founded in 1734. Manuscripta mediaevalia notes an autograph manuscript of 17 pages under his Latin name Carolus Philippus Friedricus Kurrer. Bound in old drab marbled paper covered boards with rubbing and wear. Internally fresh and written in a beautiful script with added green and brown floral accents and rules. Size: Small Octavo

Med hjälp av sin månghövdade stab skapade hertiginnan en samling som fick hennes samtida Horace Walpole att utbrista: "Few men have rivalled Margaret Cavendish in the mania of collecting, and perhaps no woman. In an age of great collectors she has rivalled the greatest." Frågan om vem som sammanställde katalogen utreds av S. P. Dance i en artikel i "Journal of the Society for the bibliography of natural history" 1962.

Didot jeune et al., Paris &c 1786 - Octavo, uncut in original plain blue-grey wrappers, early ink spine label; a few bumps but very good. Attractive Didot-printed work on scurvy with references to James Lind and Captain Cook: 'Les Médicins Anglois ont donné l'exemple à ceux des autres nations?'.This was translated into French by the magisterially named Joseph Vigarous de Montagut, a physician and member of the Société Royale des Sciences de Montpellier. In many ways Motagut's translation is more interesting than the original English because of the introduction he contributed which specifically noted the importance of combating scurvy on long voyages, and which is an interesting addition to the promotion of French voyages of exploration by French scientists. Montagut notes that Milman should be read in conjunction with Lind, and that the practical details have been expertly displayed by Cook in his voyages around the world. It is a companion to the 1783 Paris edition of Lind's Traité du Scorbut. The work originally appeared in English as An Enquiry into the Source from whence the Symptoms of the Scurvy and of Putrid Fevers arise (1782) with a dedication to Lord Southampton. The author was Sir Francis Milman (1746-1821) a physician who, in 1785, was made physician extraordinary to the King's household, and who had delivered the Gulstonian lectures in 1780 on the subject of scurvy. A worthy practitioner rather than a great medical theorist, his acquaintance with the works of James Lind made him an early convert to modern cures for scurvy, and an important populariser of a more general understanding of the disease. The work also includes some valuable notes on classical outbreaks of the diseases such as that mentioned by Strabo. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Volumes 1-6

Wien und Leipzig, auf Kosten der Gesellschaft and Lucas Hochenleitter, 1786-1792. 8vo. Some text and four nicely hand coloured engraved title vignettes and 356 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates all with Latin and German names by J. Lachenbauer and engraved by I. Albrecht. Contemporary uniform marbled boards. Spines with red morocco label with gilt title. Edges speckled red.l Very rare in any state and by far the largest collection of these fine plates on the market since 1987. The images were drawn by J. Lachenbauer. Each plate shows one plant species (or mushroom), with its name in Latin, following the Linnaean system, and in German. Two of the introductions are signed by Lukas Hochenleitter und Komp. All volumes have a printed alphabetical index with annotations about the plant's morphology and distribution. A complete set should have eight volumes with 480 plates. We are lacking the last two volumes. Last auction record, of seven parts, dates from 1977. In volume 3 and 6 each two plates are wanting, probably never included. Otherwise a beautifully hand-coloured set, and very fresh, with the impressions strong and the colouring neat, bright and accurate. It seems to be a very rare botanical "journal" which we never had before. Only three auction records appear in the last 40 years. Nissen BBI, 2342.

A poetical review of the literary and moral character of the late Samuel Johnson, L.L.D. : with notes by John Courtenay, Esq.

1786 - 4to., disbound, pp. 40. A little dog-earring and occasional browning otherwise a very good copy preserved in cloth fall-down-back box with leather label. First Dublin edition, first issue, with Byrne the only named printer. Copies of this edition are also found with the imprint "Dublin : printed for Luke White, and P. Byrne, 1786." Comparing both copies held at Harvard the latter imprint with both names has a cancel stub behind the title page from which we presume that that is a later issue. OCLC records only Huntingdon Library and Harvard for this imprint. Irish politician John Courtenay frequented London literary society, attaching himself to James Boswell as a fellow admirer of Samuel Johnson, on whose character he published A Poetical Review in 1786. Courtenay's poetical biography was one of the first to be published after Johnson's death. Courtenay is one of the biographers pictured in James Sayer’s famous satirical engraving on Johnson’s biographers. Boswell in his Life of Johnson describes Courtenay's work, as ,"a performance of such merit, that had I not been honoured with a very kind and partial notice in it, I should echo the sentiments of men of the first taste loudly in its praise".         An Historical Narrative of the Discovery of New Holland and New South Wales... illustrated With a Chart of New Holland

London: John Fielding, no date but, 1786. Quarto, with a folding hand-coloured chart of New Holland in its first issue, some toning to the title-page but an excellent tall untrimmed copy in handsome recent green half morocco by Sangorski. The earliest book devoted to New South Wales: prepared before the First Fleet sailed. Very rare first edition of the earliest separate account of New South Wales, with the correct first issue map. Hastily published in an attempt to capitalise on the intense public curiosity regarding the announcement of the new convict settlement at Botany Bay, the book is chiefly a condensed account of the three voyages of Captain Cook, discussing the major landfalls not only in Australia but also the wider Pacific. It also includes a discussion of Cook's main precursors Tasman and Dampier.Lord Sydney's 1786 announcement of the decision to send felons to Botany Bay revealed a lack of general information on the remote destination. The narratives, official and unofficial, of Cook's first voyage in the Endeavour dated from 10 to 15 years earlier and were essentially inaccessible to most readers; what was needed was a description of the conditions that might be expected in New South Wales, a gap quickly filled by Fielding's condensation of existing information as the Historical Narrative. This concise and accessible book was basically derived from first-hand accounts of the east coast by Cook, Parkinson, Magra and others. The first work in print to reflect the resolution to establish a settlement at Botany Bay, the publication of Fielding's work marks the point at which the history of Terra Australis ends and a narrative of settlement begins. It was an extraordinarily popular book when first published: within months a second quarto edition and a cheaper octavo reprint were called for. All editions are very rare today.

- I., Allgemeine Einleitung.

Minime fioriture. Una firma antica al titolo. Bella copia in barbe. Prima edizione, molto rara. Reale, Miscell. Storia patria 64, Memorie storiche intorno all'origine di Beroldo di Sassonia).". Spreti, 999. Saffroy, I, n. 3975. Manno, I, 2621. D.B.I., cit.
