Natuurkundige Beschrijving der Zeën.

's Gravenhage, by de Compagnie, 1786. Folio (415 x 265mm). pp. (4), xxv, (1), 216, with a hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 52 engraved plates of which 50 beautifully hand-coloured. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spine with red gilt lettered label (small repair to foot of spine). The very rare coloured issue of this great classic on marine science. Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (Marsilli or Marsigli) is considered the founding father of modern oceanography. "In 1724 he published the first treatise on oceanography, 'Histoire physique de la mer'. In it he treated problems which until then had been veiled by error and legend. Marsili examined every aspect of the subject: the morphology of the basin and relationship between the lands under and above water; the water's properties (color, temperature, salinity) and its motion (waves, currents, tides); and biology of the sea, which foretold the advent of marine botany. Among the plants he numbered animals like corals, which before his time had been regarded as inorganic matter" (DSB). "In several aspects, Marsigli was a pioneer in hydrographical surveying. He was the first to draw depth-lines on a sea chart. This was a map of the Gulf of Lion, published in his work 'Histoire physique de la mer' (I.C. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici II, p.274). Count Marsigli was a Bolognese scientist nobleman, served in the army of Emperor Leopold I and attained high rank. He was the founder of the Accademia delle Scienze dell'Istituto di Bologna and became member in 1722 of the Royal Society and was introduced by Newton. Marsigli's first essay on this subject under the title "Osservazioni naturali intorno al mare" was published in Venice, 1711. An extended version was issued "Histoire physique de la Mer" in Amsterdam, 1725, of which the above offered edition is a translation. Preface in Latin and Dutch by H. Boerhave./The colouring of the plates is exquisite. The plates show sponges, corals, algae, sea-weeds etc. The beautifully coloured allegorical frontispiece shows Neptune seated on a shell and surrounded by corals, shells and fish. Plates 1-5 are double page maps, 6-11 are likewise double page. A large uncut and beautifully preserved copy.//Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Luyken Landfort on inside frontcover as well as a small stamp of 'Haus Landfort' on title.//Nissen ZBI, 2700.

HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Lilio - Narcissus I; Belladonna (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Image measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Some cosmetic retouching in gouache. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS originally published in three volumes over a 36 year period from1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.

A lecture, containing plain descriptions of the situation of the large blood-vessels of the extremities; the instrument called tourniquet; ...

. London: Printed, by J.W. Galabin, For C. Dilly, in the Poultry. M.DCC.LXXXVI. (1786), Kl.8°, 7, (2), 9-31, (1) pp., 1 folded engraved plate, half cloth binding from the seventies; beside a stamp on page 31 a fine and clean copy.. Rare, first public edition of "A Lecture, containing plain descriptions of the situation of the large blood-vessels of the extremities; the instrument called tourniquet; and the methods of making effectual pressure on the arteries in cases of dangerous effusions of blood from wounds, &c. Delivered to the scholars of the maritime school, at Chelsea; First printed for their Use; And now published for general Benefit: By William Blizard, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries; Surgeon of the London Hospital; and the Honourable Artillery-Company; And Lecturer in Anatomy and Surgery. - Prodesse quam conspici." - - Fame in the fullest measure came to Sir William Blizard (1743-1835), he was Founder and First President of the Hunterian Society, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of London (later to become the Royal College of Surgeons of England), a Fellow of the Royal Society, President of the Anatomical Society, Fellow of the Royal Societies of Edinburgh and Gottingen, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, Surgeon to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and in 1803 he was knighted. In spite of all these honours the tributes of his friends stress his qualities as a philanthropist, gentleman, and seeker of truth. - "In a short review it is not possible to list all his skills as a surgeon. Sir William Mac-Cormac, in his Souvenir of the Royal College of Surgeons, described Blizard as one of those 'brilliant surgeons' who, with Astley Cooper, Clive, Home, and Lawrence, 'made England famous at the early part erf the nineteenth century as the centre of surgical teaching and surgical progress'. - cf. Rita R Auden: A Hunterian pupil Sir William Blizard and The London Hospital. Ann R Coll Surg Engl. 1978 July; 60(4): 345-349. - - Medicine and the Navy: "Although not a surgeon himself, and to some extent priding himself on the fact, shrewd observations upon the subject of surgical preparation for enemy action afloat were made by Sir Gilbert Blane following the engagement between the British and French fleets near Martinique, on April 1, 1782. Serving in the Formidable, Blane (1749-1934) recorded the event as follows: - "Having but little knowledge, and no practice in surgery, and as there was a full complement of medical officers on board, I requested the Admiral's leave to absent myself from the quarters assigned me, and to remain with him on the quarter deck during the action. It occurred to me also, that I might possibly be of some use in this spot in case of any severe injury threatening life from haemorrhage, and for this purpose I carried some tourniquets about me of a simple construction, but no such accident occurred on the quarter deck of the Formidable. Captain Bayne of the Alfred, killed in the action of the 9th April, was thought to have expired by a haemorrhage of the leg which took place while he was carried to the cockpit, so that the timely application of a tourniquet might have saved the life of that excellent officer. The tourniquets alluded to, consisted merely of a piece of leather, somewhat stiff but flexible, about the breadth of the hand and long enough to embrace the limb, with slits to admit a piece of broad tape; a piece of linen or calico rolled, so as to act as a compress to the artery, and a cylindrical piece of wood to twist the tape in the act of applying the instrument. Would it not be advisable at all times that some intelligent person, a warrant or petty officer, quartered on the quarter deck, should carry in his pocket some such instrument, particularly in large ships, on account of the distance of the cockpit? He need not be a medical officer; and the only instruction necessary would be to point out to him the situation of the great artery in the thigh and arm, since with this interest alone, the blood might be stopped by a handkerchief tied tight." - On the same subject Turnbull wrote in 1806: - "As loss of blood is the principal cause of the number of deaths which take place at sea during an engagement, every ship should be provided with a certain number of tourniquets of the simplest construction, for ready and immediate application. To save the lives of the wounded as much as possible, it is also a proper step that the crew themselves should be taught the use of this instrument. Convinced of the propriety of this measure, when in the Navy, I caused the men to be instructed, particularly those constant in the tops, they being most distant from the assistance and attention of the Surgeon. This plan I communicated to the late Mr. Bird, then Surgeon of the Arrogant, and afterwards Surgeon to Lord Hood; and the practice in consequence became general through the fleet. My letter on this subject was afterwards published by Sir William Blizard, in his well written popular Lecture addressed to the Pupils of the Marine School. In those parts of the body where a tourniquet cannot be used, as in the head and trunk, pressure with the hand must be applied; or where it cannot be made, the application of pieces of sponge, or dossils of lint, may be pressed upon the mouths of the bleeding vessels, till a more effectual restraint of the haemorrhage can be procured. - These means, then, will be sufficient, and are the only ones in our power, till the Surgeon has an opportunity to take charge of the wounded person, and applying the proper treatment that the circumstances of his case requires." - These views are of importance in that both Turnbull and Blane fully realized the value of first-aid carried out on the spot, as opposed to delaying treatment by first transferring the casualty to a cockpit which might be remote. Also of importance is their realization that such first-aid measures could safely be placed in the hands of laymen trained to the task. But in this respect, the two authorities revealed differing degrees of confidence in the capabilities of laymen. For example, Turnbull considered that "the crew themselves should be taught". On the other hand, Blane was more conservative, and advocated "some intelligent person, a warrant or petty officer". - It is of interest that when Naval Regulations eventually came to be framed so as to cover the preparations for action afloat, while the principle of using and instructing laymen was accepted, yet only ten per cent of a ship's company was required to be trained in first-aid measures such as the application of a tourniquet. This figure persisted for over a hundred years. In fact, in 1939, the navy entered the Second World War still with the figure ten per cent as the minimum number of a ship's company required to be trained in first-aid. The regulation was not changed until 1942, by which time experience had proved Turnbull's doctrine to be the correct one, to the extent that as far as possible "all officers and men should receive instruction in first-aid". Furthermore, by 1942, experience proved that Blane's views upon first-aid on the spot were correct to an extent which Blane himself had never realized, in that, provided first-aid had first been efficiently applied, delay and the avoidance of man-handling a casualty to a remote cockpit (or in modern terms a remote distributing station) might prove beneficial to the casualty by the reduction of shock." Medicine and Navy 1200-1900. Vol III 1714-1815 (1961). by Christopher Lloy and Jack S.L. Coulter, pp.61-62

      G. G. J. and J. Robinson, London 1786 - Hardcover. 8vo. Two volumes. xxiv + 568 pp & xxxvi + 596 pp. Contemporary full leather with elaborately tooled gilt decorations to spine, gilt fleurons around margins of boards, marbled endpapers, Two fold-out maps and one fold-out plan of the Great Pyramid in Vol. I. (possibly lacking a third map - though there is no sign of one ever having been bound in, and sources differ as to whether one is called for or not). Savary, an Arabic speaker, travelled in Egypt between 1776 to 1779, and is remembered as the first Frenchman to cite Arabic sources in his writings. His book became something of a 'Bible' for Europeans travelling in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, although some suggested bitterly he downplayed the harshness of the environment. Boards lightly chafed, spines rubbed with light bruising to ends, corners bumped and lightly rubbed, ownership signature - unmarked otherwise. Overall a sound and internally fresh VG set. A very attractive copy of a work that is genuinely scarce in this First English edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Very hard to find and often seen only in the single volumes which can commandover 100 eachA New Edition, reviewed and augmented by the author. Volumes III - VIII only. Missing Volumes I and II. With an armorial nameplate for Lord Rendlesham on the front pastedowns. Marie-Jeanne Riccoboni, 1714 1792, was a French novelist. In 1735 she married Antoine Franois Riccoboni, a comedian and dramatist, from whom she soon separated. She herself was an actress and had moderate success on the stage. Madame Riccoboni's work is among the most eminent examples of the sensibility novel; among the parallels cited in English literature are works by Laurence Sterne and Samuel Richardson. A still nearer parallel may be found in the work of Henry Mackenzie. Riccoboni was also the editor of a periodical L'Abeille, wrote a novel on the subject of Fielding's Amelia, and supplied in 1765 a continuation of Marivaux's unfinished Marianne. Riccoboni also corresponded with such luminaries as Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, author of Les Liaisons Dangeureuses, as well as David Hume and the theater celebrity David Garrick. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm. The front hinge of volume 3 is held by one cord only, and the front hinge of volume 4 is held by the cords. Thesecould detach in the post, even after careful packaging. Therear hinges of volumes 4 and 8are starting. The front hinges of volumes5 and 8 are starting. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages have some slight browning, and the occasional spot. Overall the condition is good only due to detached boards, with a very good interior. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - Carl Wilhelm Hahn (1786-1836) Original watercolors for Abbildungen Und Beschreibungen Merkwurdiger Naturgeschichtlicher Gegenstande Printed in Nuremberg 1816-1822 72 natural history hand-colored engravings including birds by Carl Wilhelm Hahn 10 1/2” x 8”; 16 1/2” x 14 1/2” framed (professionally framed with a beautiful gold leaf moulding with all archival materials and uv plexiglass) Carl Wilhelm Hahn was a German scientist of natural history, studying the nature of birds as well as spiders. His primary focus was devoted to the study of spiders which resulted in a publication of over 3,000 images entitled, Monograph of Spinner and Die Arachnidan, completed only after his death in 1857. He was also quite fascinated with ornithological studies which resulted in the collaboration of the publication of a two volume work with Johann Wolf, Abbildungen Und Beschreibengen Merkwurdiger naturgeschichtlicher Gegenstande (translated as The Natural History of Unusual Birds and other Animals with Illustations and Desciptions) published in Nuremberg from 1816-1822. These extraordinary original watercolors of a blue bird and parrot were two of only a few of Hahn’s studies used in this publication. The detail and accuracy of this painting are lovely. Hahn was concerned not only with the scientific accuracy of the Ibis, but also capturing the individuality and characteristic traits of its personality.

A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, and Round the World: but chiefly into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the year 1772 to 1776

London:: Printed for G G J and J Robinson,. 1786.. Second edition and most complete. Hardcover. Very good condition. Anders Sparrman was a Swedish naturalist, abolitionist, son of a clergyman and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. At the age of nine he enrolled at Uppsala University, beginning medical studies at fourteen and becoming one of the outstanding pupils of Linnaeus. In 1765 he went on a voyage to China as ship's doctor, returning two years later and describing the animals and plants he had encountered. On this voyage he met Carl Gustaf Ekeberg. He sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take up a post as a tutor. Sparrman, traveled to the Cape in early 1772 on a botanical expedition sponsored by the Swedish government and made several excursions into the country in search of natural history specimens. When James Cook arrived there later in the year at the start of his second voyage, Sparrman was taken on as assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. For the next three years he served with Cook and although in his "Voyage" he devotes only 24 pages to the Cook expedition, he does include an account of a narrow escape from collision of Cook’s two ships, the Adventure and the Resolution, not recorded elsewhere. After the voyage he returned to Cape Town in July 1775 and practiced medicine, earning enough to finance a journey into the interior. (Cox). Sparrman’s account of his explorations into Africa is important for its natural history and anthropological observations of Southern Africa and is, according to Theal, "the most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it, that has been published in the 18th century" (Mendelssohn II, 414-15), (Withey, 201). First issued in Swedish in 1783; the English translation first appeared in London earlier in 1785. Cox I, 386; Holmes, Captain James Cook: A Bibliographical Excursion, 54; Spence 1147; Rosove 316.C1 (citing it as "scarce"); Beddie 1277, Conrad p. 14; Chavanne 5731. & & This is the second English edition, considered the most correct and complete according to Rolf du Rietz in the Kroepelien catalogue. Two volumes, 4to, xxviii, 368pp with frontispiece and two plates & viii, 356pp, I [addendum & directions to the book-]binder, (1), 2 [advertisements]; 7 unlisted plates and one fold out map (in the 1st volume, with a 3" closed tear at hinge expertly strengthened). In total, ten engraved plates and a folding map. An exceptionally clean copy, bound in period brown tree calf, gilt decorated spine in 6 compartments, with the original maroon title label & volume numbers. A very pleasant copy overall of the best edition, which Rosove calls "scarce".

Volumes 1-6.

      - Wien und Leipzig, auf Kosten der Gesellschaft and Lucas Hochenleitter, 1786-1792. 8vo. Some text and four nicely hand coloured engraved title vignettes and 356 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates all with Latin and German names by J. Lachenbauer and engraved by I. Albrecht. Contemporary uniform marbled boards. Spines with red morocco label with gilt title. Edges speckled red.* Very rare in any state and by far the largest collection of these fine plates on the market since 1987. The images were drawn by J. Lachenbauer. Each plate shows one plant species (or mushroom), with its name in Latin, following the Linnaean system, and in German. Two of the introductions are signed by Lukas Hochenleitter und Komp. All volumes have a printed alphabetical index with annotations about the plant's morphology and distribution. A complete set should have eight volumes with 480 plates. We are lacking the last two volumes. Last auction record, of seven parts, dates from 1977. In volume 3 and 6 each two plates are wanting, probably never included. Otherwise a beautifully hand-coloured set, and very fresh, with the impressions strong and the colouring neat, bright and accurate. It seems to be a very rare botanical "journal" which we never had before. Only three auction records appear in the last 40 years. Nissen BBI, 2342. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
