Lessing. Gotthold Ephraim, editor and author; Hermann Samuel Reimarus
Berlin: Arnold Wever. Published 1784 and 1787. First volume is a neue auflage, second volume is a first printing, third volume does not have a publisher listed but most scholars think it was Wever who published this volume too. 8vo, old half vellum and patterned paper-covered boards, 276, 298, 410 pp. Very good, light soil and rubbing to binding, minor ex-library marks with bookplates to pastedown, blindstamp to title pages. Lessing died in 1781; these posthumously published 'fragments' are an outgrowth of the major theological controversy that erupted in 1770s Germany when Lessing, who was head of the ducal library at Wolfenbüttel anonymously published portions of the 'Apology' of Hermann Samuel Reimarus that posited a natural religion that was opposed to a Christianity built on supernatural miracles and visions. Texts in German. Very Good.

Abbe de Mably
J. Debrett, London, 1784. [4], 280pp. Hardcover in marbled leather boards with leather spine and gilt title. Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown. First English edition. Mably's work consists of four letters written to John Adams, then the American Minister to Holland, on the government, laws, and political divisions in the United States. The French took great interest in the form that the American government would take after the Revolution, publishing the constitutions of the thirteen states in 1783, and pondering the question of a strong central government, or a loose confederation. "Mably comments on the American approach to government as reflected in the constitutions of the thirteen states, and, more specifically, in those of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.he offers advice on a national constitution, urging a loose federation rather than a strong central government and warning against excessive democracy" - Cohen. Another Dublin edition appeared in 1785, in French, predating the present translated edition, though Echeverria & Wilkie deem this a false imprint due to typographical inconsistencies in the dedication. SABIN 42925. HOWES M5 (ref). COHEN 2763. ECHEVERRIA & WILKIE 784/71. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. [Mauritius]
[Mauritius, 1784. Broadside, 10 x 13 inches. Old folds. Completed in manuscript, with wax seal and manuscript notations on verso. Worn and lightly soiled, with some minor separation and loss at folds. Good. Rare and ephemeral discharge paper for a French soldier serving on Ile de France - present-day Mauritius - in the Indian Ocean. The soldier's name in Jean Foutelle, and his age and physical description are given. The certificate is signed by the Lieutenant Colonel of the island's regiment, as well as the Lieutenant Governor. It is stamped with an official wax seal and several manuscript notations on the verso of the certificate describe later activities. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Rare and interesting - a handsome piece of early Mauritius printing.

Antonio ZATTA (Venezia 1722 - 1804)
Esemplare in ottime condizioni. L. Lago, Theatrum Adriae, p. 303 n. 375. "Map from ""Atlante Novissimo"" printed in Venice between 1776 and 1785. The map was issued in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo a monumental 4 volume work and one of the last great decorative atlases. Copperplate, original outline colour, in very good condition."

Santini Francois Venedig
Artist: Santini Francois Venedig; issued in: Venice; date: ca, 1784. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 46 x 64; - description : Impressive and unusual map in a DualPolar projection of the world in two hemispheres. This map was originally drawn by Nicholas-Antoine Boulanger and published in Paris by Chez R. J. Julien in 1753. It is allegorical surrounded, the conitnents are very detailed engraved. When Boulanger originally drew this map, the Northern Pacific region was largely unexplored and its geographical deportment a subject of hot debate in the scientific academies of London, Paris, and St. Petersburg. ; - vita of the artist: Francois [Francesco] Santini was an Italian cartographer and map publisher based in Venice. He re-issued the works of Robert de Vaugondy, Homann?s Heirs and De L?Isle. At this time, cartography in Italy was commercialy very slow, so Santini, essentially a publisher rather than a map-maker modelled his work on two of the leading practitioners of cartography in Europe, the French map-makers Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy. Their ?Atlas Universel? was first published in 1758, and was much re-issued thereafter. The atlas was a commercial and cartographic success, with widespread influence on map-makers throughout Europe, most notably on Santini, who commissioned a new set of plates, published in 1776, being almost exact copies of the original French maps

[Click Below for Full Description]

LAUNOY, -- , & -- BIENVENU.
FIRST EDITION. Description of the first prototype for a helicopter, an airscrew model demonstrated before the Académie des Sciences in Paris in April 1784. It consisted of two two-blade rotors contra-rotating on the ends of a short pole, worked by a simple bow-string mechanism. This is in essence the principle of the helicopter and was to lead to all subsequent helicopter development. It was studied by Sir George Cayley who made a model of the Frenchmen's design in 1796 and later improved it. Purchase of this pamphlet served as an admission ticket to view the three helicopter models then on display at Bienvenu's house in the Rue de Rohan, Paris. The first machine was the one demonstrated at the Académie des Sciences; the second a larger machine three times the size of the original; and the third a model of a proposed machine,"réservée essentiellement à l'examen du Public" (p. 2). Tissandier, Bibliographie aéronautique, p. 26. Hodgson, p. 394. Gibbs-Smith, Sir George Cayley's aeronautics, pp. 1-3. Paul de Rapin
London: John Harrison, 1784. Acceptable: Boards off and chipped spine: some foxing: Engravings galore! Rapin's History was considered the definitive history of England until David Hume wrote his version. This is for two volumes, copiously Illustrated from 1784 covering a wide swath of British history. In acceptable condition, both volumes have boards that are loose or off but all are present. These are marked Volume II and Volume III and "Published as the Act directs July 3rd 1784". Both have many engravings of notables of the era along with genealogical tables and, of course, multitudes of text describing the various activities primarily political and royal, of the times covered in each volumes. Engravings are signed "Goldar" being the work of John Goldar. I counted 14 plus frontispiece in the volume marked "Vol III" and 34 plus frontispiece of Rapin in the one marked "Vol II". These cover a variety of notables of the eras covered including various kings, mostly Edwards and Henrys along with lords of the realm including Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell. Nice engraving of Elizabeth of Bohemia. Mary Queen of Scots memorial shown along with genealogies of various royals including William the Conqueror and James the 1. Paul de Rapin was also known as Thoyras de Rapin and originally wrote his histories in French. Originally translated by Matthew Tindal, this edition has been translated by John Kelly and attempted to continue the history to the date of 1786 which would have made him fairly prescient as the date of publication is 1784. - Tl. VII ohne Vortitel und Tl. BUDAN, -- Père, de l'Oratoire.
Budan was professor of philosophy at the Oratory College in Nantes. He and others constructed and flew a balloon at Nantes on 14th June 1784. The exchange of letters here documents a complicated row between Budan and Louvrier, editor of Affiches de la Province de Bretagne, which published an account of Budan's flight. Budan complained that Louvrier's account of the flight was inaccurate in many respects. Bound in at the end is a leaf extracted from the Affiches de la Province de Bretagne, no. 25, which contains the "Procès verbal de l'expérience Aérostatique faite à Nantes le 14 Juin 1784". Very rare; Worldcat locates only the Bibliothèque nationale's copies of these pamphlets. Not in Tissandier, Bibliographie aéronautique.
