VOLTAIRE
[Kehl] Imprimerie De La Societe Litteraire-Typographique, 1784. - 1784 Voltaire Spirit of Nations ISLAM Muslim Turkey Mohammed Quran Charlemagne “Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.” Voltaire A rare late-18th-century printing of Voltaire’s “Essay on the Manners and Spirit of Nations.” This work, originally written in 1756, deals with the history of Europe before the time of Charlemagne through the start of the reign of King Louis XIV. Voltaire, most-known for his theatrical works, devoted several chapters of this work to the history of Islam and its influence in European culture, particularly Arabian and Turkish courts. Voltaire, somewhat controversially, compared Arabs to the ancient Hebrews, noting Mohammed as a poet, and their treatment of God. However, this treatment of Islam in European culture was predominantly critical and negative. Voltaire had strong feelings against Muslim culture particularly to the Quran, which he claims, ‘ignored the laws of physics.’ (Gunny, Images of Islam) Item number: #751 Price: $499 VOLTAIRE Oeuvres completes de Voltaire Essai sur les moeurs et l’esprit des nations [Kehl] Imprimerie De La Societe Litteraire-Typographique, 1784. FISCHER VON WALDHEIM, Gotthelf.
Blake, p. 147; Nissen, ZBI 1386; not in BMC NH; Dean; Garrison & Morton; Wellcome; Wood. First and only edition of one of the earliest contributions to comparative anatomy. In Goethe's first essay in the field of what we now call biology, Versuch aus der vergleichenden Knochenlehre ... (Jena, 1784), he showed that the tiny intermaxillary bone in the upper jaw, could be found not only in animals but in humans as well. This seemingly trivial discovery demolished one of the principal supports for the then general notion that humans were not related to animals, and Goethe called these bones "the cornerstone to man." Goethe's study also signalled the beginnings of comparative anatomy and paved the way for modern scientific biology and Darwin's theory of evolution. Goethe's and most other studies had concentrated primarily on mammals. The present work broadens the scope, not only adding new species of mammal (including some from the East Indies and Brazil), but also covering reptiles, amphibians and fish. With a manuscript note on the flyleaf. In fine condition, with only very minor browning in the text leaves and a blue mark in an open area of one plate. Binding only slightly worn at the corners and hinges. A remarkably early study of comparative anatomy, largely overlooked in the medical and zoological bibliographies.

FARLEY, John
London: J. Scatchard and J. Whitaker; and J. Fielding. 1784. 8vo., engraved portrait frontispiece, 12 engraved plates of 'bills of fare', xx + 459 + (1)pp., with advertisements on verso of final leaf, portrait slightly offset, contemporary sheep, neatly and sympathetically rebacked with gilt lines and old label. A very good copy. Cagle 676. Maclean p.50. Oxford p.114n. This edition not in Vicaire or Bitting. First published in 1783, this seems to have become a popular work for at least 30 years. (It was reprinted regularly until 1811). John Farley (1755/6 - 1827) was the principal cook at the famous London Tavern in Bishopsgate, which had been rebuilt by William Jupp and William Newton following its destruction by fire in 1765. It was renowned for the excellent meals provided in its dining-room, which could accommodate 355 people. The East India Company used to give its dinners there. Farley's book starts off with freshness and enthusiasm, suggesting that it was filling a cookery lacuna. 'Cookery, like every other art, has been moving forward to perfection by slow degrees;' suggests the author, 'and, though the cooks of the last century boasted of having brought it to the highest pitch it could bear, yet we find that daily improvements are still making therein, which must be the case of every art depending on fancy and taste: and though there are so many books of this kind already published, that one would hardly think there could be occasion for another; yet we flatter ourselves, that the readers of this work will find, from a candid perusal, and an impartial comparison, t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Weller I, 126. This book is the testimony, and made his memoirs, he tells both the board of the Baron de Tott and is undoubtedly the first book to give an objective picture of the Turkish nation and Turkish. From his preface, the author, after considerations on the influence of climate on the psychology of peoples (reference to Montesquieu) affirms the importance of knowing and speaking the language of a people, and the need to keep its European bias to describe the manners and institutions of the Turks, which had never been done; that is why we find in this book a wealth of knowledge and new information on the Turks and Tartars; in particular, the many dialogues between the Baron and some lords are particularly relevant for understanding the psychology and the Ottoman culture. [AL-JAZULI, Muhammad ibn Sulaiman].
A richly decorated Islamic prayerbook in Arabic with extensive pictorial, semi-pictorial and floral decoration and calligraphic roundels, executed in the Ottoman Empire in 1199 AH (1784/85 AD). The Dala'il al-khayrat (sometimes translated as Proofs of good deeds or Waymarks of benefits) is a prayerbook invoking peace and blessings for the prophet Muhammad. It was written and compiled by Muhammad ibn Sulaiman al-Jazuli (807-870 AH or 1404/05-1465 AD), a Moroccan scholar in the mystical Islamic Sufi movement, and became one of the most popular Islamic prayerbooks, especially in the Ottoman Empire. al-Jazuli's inspiration for the prayerbook is said to have come before he left Fez for forty years in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, but he finalized it in Fez in the last years of his life. Some of the illustrations traditionally included in the book, including the views of the Mecca and Medina mosques, were added after his death. Many of the "illustrations" comprise texts written within a gold outline with the form of a vase, long-necked bottle, pair of trees, sword, etc., the whole in a rectangular border with a coloured background. A few are more pictorial, showing the Ka'ba, a dallah (coffee pot) and other items. With a chip in the first leaf, just touching the text, a couple leaves torn along the border and many bifolia separated at the gutter fold, some water damage at the foot of the gutter margin and a few minor stains and tears (some repaired). The text and pictorial imagery in most leaves nevertheless remains in very good condition. The binding shows some wear, mostly at th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cf. Caillet 2861-2864 (first eds); Hall, Old Conjuring Books, pp. 156-158, 174; Christopher, Magic: a picture history, pp. 28-31. Rare complete set (second edition?) of Decremps's popular work on conjuring and physics tricks, first published in 1784. Henri Decremps (1746-1826), a Parisian lawyer and amateur conjuror, sought to unmask Giovanni Giuseppe Pinetti, the most celebrated magician of the 18th century. Pinetti had gained fame as a flamboyant performer, but Decremps considered him a charlatan who cheated people for personal profit. In the first volume Decremps unveils several of his most famous tricks, including one named "Theophrastus Paracelsus", involving a pigeon supposedly being beheaded, a mechanical singing bird, an automaton chess-player and a dancing egg that jumps out of a hat. The frontispiece in vol. 1 shows the magician throwing a deck of cards in the air and nailing shooting a card with a pistol. As a reaction to Decremps's attack Pinetti published his own instruction book, Physical amusements, and prepared a new show. Decremps then published a supplement revealing Pinnetti's latest tricks, followed by three subsequent volumes almost entirely devoted to physics tricks: Testament de Jérome Sharp, Les petites aventures de Jérome Sharp and finally Codicile de Jérome Sharp. Decremps's work proved very popular: it was reprinted and translated numerous of times. Sets comprising all five volumes are rare.In very good condition. A rare complete set of an important conjuring book, in lovely uniform near contemporary bindings.
