HAÜY, Rene-Just
Eight folding engraved plates. 3 p.l., 236 pp. 8vo, 19th-cent. pink half-calf (first few leaves a little foxed), spine gilt, black morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Gogué & Née, 1784. First edition of the book which "laid the foundation of the mathematical theory of crystal structure."-D.S.B., VI, p. 178. It was due to this work that Haüy was able to properly classify minerals. Haüy held that the characteristic form of the constituent molecule of a compound is due to the forms, the definite proportions, and the definite arrangement of the constituent elementary particles. That is, before Proust, Haüy proposed a priori the chemical law of fixed proportions. These concepts enabled Haüy to unite in one species minerals hitherto considered different, such as beryl and emerald, and to divide groups that had been considered varieties of the same species, such as zeolites. Very good copy. Half-title lacking. Signature of J. Robison, 1787, in upper corner of title. This was John Robison (1739-1805), natural philosopher, inventor, and collaborator with James Watt and Joseph Black, whom he succeeded as lecturer on chemistry at Glasgow. ? DE ROSSI Johannes Bern.
Bodoni G.B, 1784. 4 vol. in-4, pp. (8), CLX, 116; XIV, (2), 264; VIII, (2), 268; XXXII, (2), 242. It., vol. 39, pp. 205-213).

- Parisiis, P.-D. Pierres, 1784-1785. 6 parts (bound in one volumes). Folio (504 x 340mm). With titles to all 6 parts and 91 (2 double-page) engraved plates (of which 54 after P.J. Redouté). 19th century half calf, spine in 7 compartments with red gilt lettered label. "This is one of the more delightful flower books of the eighteenth century. L'Héritier de Brutelle was an amateur botanist of unusual abilities and resources. Luckily, he persuaded the young Redouté to make fifty-four drawings for his 'magnum opus'. The book is splendid in its spacious descriptions, its charming exotic plates, its implications for taxonomic history; and fascinating as an imposing piece of eighteenth-century bookmaking, with its series of fascicles printed on broadsheets, its bibliographical algebra. It is in 'Stirpes novae' that Luxemburg-born Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) emerges as an extraordinary botanical artist. He had the great good luck to have the very fine Dutch artist Gerrit van Spaëndonck (1746-1822) as his master in drawing, and L'Héritier de Brutelle as his instructor in 'choses botaniques'"'(Hunt). Although the author had planned to publish more parts (with at least 120 plates), this fine botanical rarity remained unfinished. "Contains illustrations of about 10 Cape plants" (Kerkham, Southern Botanical Literature 1600-1988, No. 384). Apart from Pierre Joseph Redoute the following artists were involved: Prévost, Fossier, James Sowerby, Fréret, Aubriet, Bruguière, Jossigny and Henri Joseph Redouté.Cat.
